Chapter 5

Gun shot, after gun shot, after gun shot. That's all I heard for the past hour; it was starting to get to me.  With each passing shot that sounded the more I couldn't help but think about that night.

Bradley kept me in his arms and tried to block out the noises as much as he could.  It wasn't working and my boyfriend could tell.

The rifle went off again and I flinched once more. "Ok, I'm fed up with this now," Bradley stated while climbing out of the car.

"Where are you going?" I asked not wanting to be alone.

He gave me a small smile, "I'll be right back. I'm going to tell them we want to leave."

I simply nodded my head in response and Bradley closed the door and set off towards his father and brother.

I waited on the car for about five minutes before deciding to find where Bradley went. I hopped out of the vehicle and set off towards the small group. I saw Elliot hand Caleb the rifle.

"Show him how it's done," Elliot spoke as I found myself by Bradley's side.

My boyfriend instinctively grabbed my hand and his little brother started to give instructions.

"Okay so, basically you wanna widen your stance," Caleb started as he did just that, "and just mash it into the squishy part of your shoulder."

The blonde boy then raised the gun, "and then you just wanna line it up."

"Hey, Hey," Elliot called pointing in the direction of the snow, "look."

My eyes followed the direction of his finger and they landed on a small white bunny.  My grip on Bradley's hand tightened instantly.  Caleb looked towards his father and in return he gave a smile.  My boyfriend's brother then raised the gun again, aiming for the animal.

"Caleb don't-," I tried to say but my words were cut off by the sound of a gunshot ringing out.

I jumped back at the sight of the snow turning red; flashes of images flooding my mind. Images of that horrid night.  My feet were frozen in place and time slowed.  The rabbit continued to try and run away but it was no use.

Eventually time sped up again when I was pulled into Bradley's embrace.  He locked his arms around me and I dug my head into his chest.  Gripping his shirt I tried to hold back the tears.

"Nice shot!" Elliot cheered taking the gun from Caleb.

I looked over and saw the boy staring at the ground with a disgusted look on his face.  Clearly he hated what he had just done.

However their father thought other wise; Elliot made his way over to the bunny and my eyes followed.  I wish they hadn't because all I saw was my boyfriend's father ramming the butt of the gun into the bunny.

A small gasp escaped from my lips, and that was all it took for Bradley to pull me back in.  His hand cupped my chin and he made me look into his deep brown eyes.

"Just look at me okay. You're gonna be fine," my boyfriend whispered as he hugged me tighter.

Once again I buried my face into his jacket.  I hugged him tight and felt my nerves ease ever so slightly.  Bradley usually had that effect, and this was one of those moments where I was thankful for it.

I could feel Bradley staring at his father, hatred in his eyes.

Elliot must have noticed it as well, "What was I supposed to do let him suffer?"

No one answered and I refused to look away from Bradley.

A few seconds later Elliot spoke again, "What did you think was gonna happen?"

"I didn't think I would hit it," Caleb spoke up, voice cracking with regret.

This is what finally made me look away from my boyfriend and at his brother.  Caleb and I locked eyes and I could see the tears pricking out of them.

"I'm sorry, Skylar," He croaked, hanging his head low.

I couldn't manage any words to form. I couldn't believe that he pulled the trigger.  I understood that he was trying to impress his father, but I also knew that he didn't want to do it.

"Jesus you guys are soft, let's just go," Elliot said after a minute of silence.

Their father made his way to the car and we all followed after.  "Are y'all ok?" Bradley asked.

No answer came from us in words; just simple nods.  Elliot started to load the gun and gear into the trunk and Caleb crawled into the car.

With my hand still in Bradley's, I felt him come to a stop.

"You've been drinking," my boyfriend pointed out to his father.

Cluelessly Elliot looked around, "So."

I have a huff and gestured to the vehicle, "You can't drive."

Elliot smiled and dug into his pocket.  Pulling out a set of keys he held the out towards his oldest son, "You drive."

"He doesn't have a license and neither do I," I stated while glancing at my boyfriend.

A smile crept onto his lips as Elliot replied, "He's gotta learn sometime."

"Alright," Bradley said while taking the keys.

I looked at my boyfriend as he climbed into the car.  I let out a sigh and got into the back seat right behind them.

"So Ted never taught you?" Elliot questioned climbing into the car.

"Like Ted would ever let him drive the car," Caleb scoffed while I buckled up.

Elliot started to then give Bradley instructions on how to work the car.  A few minutes later we were driving down the road and everything seemed to be going fine.

"You good? You sure you don't want me to take over?" Elliot asked.

Bradley shook his head, "Nah, I'm good. I'm fine."

"He drives like a grandmother, Let me try," Caleb spoke up.

I rolled my eyes at this comment, but a small smile tugging at my lips all the same.

"You couldn't even see over the steering wheel," Bradley scoffed.

Next thing I know Caleb kicked Bradley's seat.  That caused Bradley to reach behind and swat at his sibling.  They always did it but right now was not the time for it.

"Stop It you're gonna get us killed," I shouted.

Immediately the boys stopped.  However that only lasted for a few seconds and Caleb kicked the seat once more. The fight intensified as Bradley took his eyes off the road.  Shouting continued from all of us and soon enough what I fear would happen, happened.

The car swerved off the road and into a patch of trees.  My head it the passengers seat and rammed my nose.  I leaned backwards with a groan and looked toward my boyfriend.

He was looking towards his father who had rage seeping through his eyes. And that's when I knew; we were stuck out here.
