Jacob Chase knew that his father was the greatest man to ever have walked the face of Earth. He had always wanted to help people, to do good in the world. Time and time again he had risked his life to put down monstrous werewolves to keep complete strangers safe. Jacob had always watched his father load his guns and walk out into the night with pride swelling in his chest at the thought of his father's work, and sat patiently on the stairs, waiting for his hero to return and read him a bedtime story. It had never dawned on Jacob that his father might walk out the door and never return.

After the tragic death at the hands of a werewolf strikes the Chase family, they all become set on vengeance.

Five years of training and killing every werewolf that comes their way, Jacob and his family finds themselves drawn to the beacon of supernatural creatures, hoping to save the town's citizens from the monsters wreaking havoc in their town. All thanks to a tape delivered at their doorstep from someone called 'The Benefactor'.

One by one, The Benefactor leaks the names of the supernatural beings in the town, and the Chase family takes them out.

Until the name Lydia Martin is given, and Jacob finds himself in an impossible dilemma. Should he let his family kill the girl he's fallen in love with, or should he accept that the facade of beauty and kindness is just that: a facade to hide the monster underneath?

Jacob Chase is a stubborn eighteen-year-old. He's a highly skilled hunter who's been training since he was thirteen. He always sees the best in people, especially people he's close with, but is very misinformed when it comes to werewolves.

Jacob is under the impression that all werewolves are monsters and killers. A lot of this is due to his parents dehumanizing them to him his whole life. When his father is killed by one of them, this dehumanization is intensified, and Jacob develops a strong hatred for the creatures, as well as an urge to protect people from them.

He doesn't question these values until Lydia Martin, the best person he has ever met, is suddenly labeled as a supernatural being. Only then is Jacob forced to see things from both perspectives.
