IT WAS SAFE TO SAY THAT Lorelai and her parents never had a good relationship. Elara Kunz has always been a bit greedy when it came to money, and capitalizing off of her daughter from the ages five to seventeen had ruined their relationship instantaneously. Being pushed into modeling at such a long age had left Lorelai with multiple unresolved mental issues and had practically ruined her childhood, not to mention entirely ruined her trust in her mother. As for her dad, a somewhat successful entrepreneur named Hansel, their relationship had died alongside the one with Lorelai's mother. He only encouraged his wife's behavior, in fact; an entrepreneur like himself knew that if you could be making money from something, you should.
Maybe it wasn't the best idea, but Lorelai emancipated herself right before the busiest Milan Fashion Week of her life where she earned enough money to survive on her own until she found a new job. What she had done was a hundred percent legal, but Elara and Hansel were much too pissed that she had gotten away with it to simply let her go.
Felix and Marzia, of course, were more than familiar with what was happening between Lorelai and her parents. For that reason alone, neither half of the couple was surprised to hear Lorelai shouting into her phone when they got back from walking the dogs on a misty Thursday morning. Felix and Marzia had woken up with excitement coursing through their veins at the fact that the storm had stalled to a mist—they could finally take Edgar and Maya out for a nap. But seeing Lorelai having an absolute shit time yelling at her mother, Marzia almost felt guilty for having such a good morning.
Danish words ran out of Lorelai's mouth at a mile per minute, and the couple finally located the screaming girl when they entered the kitchen and saw her pacing in the living room over the kitchen bar separating the rooms. She was much too caught up in her phone call to notice Felix and Marzia, so neither of them interrupted her. They had done all they could for her regarding her parents. They had offered legal support, emotional support, hell, Felix even offered to fly to Copenhagen and yell at Mr and Mrs Kunz himself. But, at the end of the day, nothing could be done about Elara and Hansel. Everything was one hundred percent legal, after all.
"Jeg er ligeglad! Okay?"
The screaming matches happened about once every other week, and every time they happened Felix and Marzia would go out on a walk to give Lorelai some privacy. Although neither of them ever understood what she was saying, they always knew what was being discussed. Marzia looked over to Felix from where they stood in the doorway observing Lorelai before looking down at Maya. She turned on her heel and headed back to the front of the house, Maya trotting behind her. Felix sighed as he watched Lorelai run a hand through her hair angrily before following Marzia with Edgar slowly trudging behind him.
"Rend mig!" Lorelai yelled, yanking her phone away from her ear and hanging up as her mother began to yell back at her.
She groaned loudly and sat down on the couch, burying her head into her hands. Fighting with her mother every other week was draining her emotionally. She didn't want to have to waste time shouting at her mother until she died, but no matter what, Elara would always call, and no matter what, Lorelai would always answer. They wanted to hurt each other at this point. Their words were intended to wound each other; their words were made of fire and lava.
Had Felix and Marzia gotten back? Lorelai could've sworn she heard the front door open, but perhaps she was hearing things. If they did get home, likely case was that they had left again when they realized what was happening. Guilt plagued her for always having to do that to them, but it was almost like an addiction. She couldn't stop herself from answering her mother's calls and listening to the same speech. It was self destructive.
Tears prickled the corners of Lorelai's eyes. She remembered a time where she would cry every time she and her mother argued; oh, how far away that seemed now. Emotion after her calls were rare now, and it surprised Lorelai to feel the wet drops sitting in the corners of her eyes, ready to be released.
"I'm such a fucking wreck," she said aloud with both misery and a sense of self deprecating amusement laced into her Danish accent.
She pulled herself off of the couch and walked into the kitchen, her plain grey fluffy socks making her walk feel like ice skating. Weakly, she yanked the door of the fridge open and stared inside at its content. One minute of staring later, she turned on her heel and headed upstairs towards her bedroom, unsatisfied with the contents of the fridge. Maybe what she thought was just herself getting better at not crying whenever someone raised her voice at her was really just getting used to it and putting on a numbing ointment. Had she grown or settled?
She hoped it was the first one, but something told her it was the second one.
Lorelai all but threw herself into her desk chair and booted up her PC. She needed a distraction. There had to be someone online who could do something with her; she didn't really care what they did as long as she wasn't alone any longer. She'd even play Fortnite if it meant that she didn't have to wallow in her feelings and emotions by herself.
Discord... who was online right now? It was noon for Lorelai, meaning that the majority of her friends who lived in the US would be asleep. In fact, all of her friends kind of operated on the same schedule to make it easier to game together. If you lived in the US, you were on in the afternoon, if you lived in Europe, you were on the evenings.
But it was noon, and Lorelai was beginning to hate that schedule. Out of the six friends that were online, four of them were just mutuals and Jack had the mobile symbol up next to his green online symbol. The only remaining option was Corpse. Why was he up so late? Didn't he live in America? Shouldn't he be asleep?

INCOMING CALL FROM corpse_husband !
✅ JOIN CALL ❌ DECLINE
"Hey," the deep rasp of Corpse's voice said, his voice coming out of Lorelai's headphones and hitting her ear at a perfect volume for once.
"Hi," she replied. Nothing in her voice exposed that she had had a rough morning, luckily. "How are you?"
"I'm good," he replied. "How about you?"
Lorelai almost betrayed herself by laughing when she answered, "good as well. You got the code, right?"
Corpse hummed a positive sounding note. Lorelai's screen finally loaded the character selection screen, and with a soft giggle, she clicked Peter.
"You wanna be Russia?" Corpse clarified.
"The mother country will reign victorious," Lorelai laughed, her Danish accent slipping away as she used a fake Russian accent.
"Will they now?" Corpse asked in a Russian accent as well.
Lorelai nodded. "Bow to Russia, scoundrel."
"Well, Tsar Peter, I suppose I have no other option than to be Frederick Barbarossa," Corpse replied. "Germany will destroy Russia."
Lorelai scoffed. "In your dreams."
The two young adults fell into silence as the game began. Eventually they settled into a comforting conversation about Twitch as they started up their civilizations—beginning a game of Civ Six was usually a slow process. Neither seemed bothered by it though; they were happy to learn more about each other and relax on call.
Lorelai's annoyance at her mother was fading away. Her posture wasn't as rigid, the crescent shapes her nails had dug into the skin of her palm had faded, and her cold scowl had slipped into a soft closed-lip grin. She had known Corpse for only a few days, but she already knew she wanted to keep him around. The reasoning behind the connection she felt to him was still blurry and yet it didn't bother her. Something about him made her feel comfortable.
"Come on, princess, you gotta help me here," Corpse laughed. He was really trying his best to get Lorelai to join his war against England, but the Danish girl didn't want to hurt the friendship she had with the country.
"Stop calling me princess," she whined, "I don't like getting flustered."
Corpse's laughter continued on as he asked, "does that really make you flustered?"
"Yes!" She exclaimed. "I usually hate pet names but princess has always been my weak spot."
"You want me to stop calling you it?"
Lorelai went quiet. "I- uh..., not really."
Corpse's laughter grew at her embarrassment. "Alright, princess. Next time you tell me to stop calling you it I can really dangle this over your head."
"Dick," she groaned, declining his offer on her screen to join the war. "What if I join England's side? Whatcha gonna do about that?"
"Well, I'd have to kill you," Corpse replied.
"Do it," Lorelai challenged.
On the other side of the call, Corpse was smirking behind his computer screen.
