CHAPTER ELEVEN

THEY WOULD BE DISGUSTED

warning this chapter has mentions of blood and death

The following morning instead of tinkering with her suit like she usually did. Melaina woke up bright and early to spend some time with her younger cousin.

The girl had quickly showered and changed into a tank top, ripped jeans, ankle boots and a tank top.

She went downstairs and began to make some breakfast for the family.

"Melaina PD is making breakfast? Wow...I never thought I'd see the day." Hippolyta said as she walked into the kitchen, the girl roles her eyes at her sister.

"Good morning to you, my dear sister." Melaina greeted as she flipped the slice of french toast on the pan.

To catch everyone up, Melaina and Hippolyta's relationship has seemingly gotten better over the past couple months. Not enough to mend a messed up 15 years of sisterhood but it was a start.

"How was New York?" The fifteen year old asked.

Hippolyta's face lit up and Melaina could clearly see that this girl was beyond excited to get out of this town. "It was beautiful. The campus is amazing and we went apartment shopping."

"I thought you wanted to live on campus?"

"I did but I'm my schedule with school and my job." She paused to see her sister's reaction, the younger girl wore a proud smile. "Mom thinks it would be easier for me."

"Or maybe she just wants an excuse to fly to apartment balcony whenever she pleases." The two laugh. "Speaking of flying..."

Hippolyta cut her off knowing what she was talking about. "No, my powers haven't kicked in yet."

As Melaina set up the table with the French toast, bacon, hash browns and the drink, she couldn't help but notice the worried look on her face.

"You know, powers aren't as cool as they seem to be." Melaina told her.

"What do you mean?"

"Well for one a lot has happened while you, mom and dad were gone."

Melaina finished cleaning up and sat at the table with Hippolyta sitting across from her. "Like?" The eighteen year old nudged.

"I left the JSA." The girls jaw dropped, then she closed it again.

"I- wow. That's something."

"Yeah and I had a whole plan set out in those seconds I told them. For me to take a break from the superhero life just for a while. I mean ever since Christmas-"

"Oh shit. You two had a fight that day." Hippolyta interrupted making the girl across her nod her head in agreement.

"Yeah we did and ever since, she's been...well."

"Bitchy?" The brunette questioned based on the look on her sisters face.

"Well...yes. And yesterday the weirdest thing happened." Melaina started before pouring herself a glass of orange juice. "We had gone to the school because Kai and Marty had managed to track Eclipso there."

"The bastard stuck in the diamond?" Hippolyta asked making Melaina snicker a bit.

"Yes him. Anyway so when we get there Rick, Beth and Yolanda are being affected by him, I really didn't understand what was happening until Harley told us. She was the only one who could see." The girl paused. "She could see what they were seeing. Then Marty and I noticed how Court and Josephine weren't there so we went to go find them, leaving Daisy, Harley and Kai to take care of the rest of that team."

Flashes of the previous night began to appear in her mind. "Then we found them and Josephine for whatever reason was collecting the darkness or well Eclipso's power in this ball of magic." Melaina gulped for what she was about to say. "For a split second I saw something in Josephine's eyes. Obviously it was bullshit because it shifted back and then she said she was going to love killing me."

The eighteen year old who was about to swallow her coffee began to choke on it for a moment.

"Crap are you okay?"

"SHE SAID WHAT!?" the brunette exclaimed, ignoring her sister's question.

"Uhhhh. It's not a big deal."

"Yes it is. Your ex-bestfriend just threatened to kill you. How is it not a big deal?" At this point the brunette was pacing and yelling at the top of her lungs.

"Sshhhh shut up!" Melaina whisper yelled hoping that no one else in the house heard.

"Don't tell me to shut up! That psycho who's been living in our house just threatened my baby sisters life." The look on the older girls face shifted from an irritated look to a more inspired look.

Hippolyta looked through her pockets and pulled out her car keys. "No! Polly no!" Melaina yelled as she followed the girl to the door.

Melaina quickly ran in front of her and blocked her path to the door. "Polly, I'll handle this." She assured.

"Handle what? You and I both know how powerful that witch bitch is and I'll be damned if I stay here and let her put a hand on you!" Polly, something that Melaina hadn't called her since she was a baby. Melaina looked into her older sisters eyes, there were a bunch of emotions spiralling in them but the most identifiable one was fear. "I have been a horrible sister to you for years now and the last thing I want is for you to die. You don't think I know how she's been treating you since Christmas? I've tried talking to her so many times but it goes in one ear and out the other."

"I get that I really do but she wouldn't kill me."

"How can you be so sure of that? Last I checked you said she isn't the same person who you grew up with. She is capable of killing someone. I know that, your friends know that so why can't you see it?" Melaina took a step back. " I know part of you wants to save her but like our mother has said. You can't save everyone."

As much as it hurt to say those words, especially because of who her mother was referring to at the time it had to get out. Melaina had to hear them.

✦✧✦✧

After the talk turned argument with Hippolyta, the girls plans had taken a slight turn when Donna asked her to watch Zamira for the day while she goes to get some of her daughters things from out of town.

That was an hour ago, now the two were sitting in the park. The two sat on a bench under a tree. The two cousins were each enjoying ice creams despite the weather.

Throughout the day Zamira had barely said a word. Every now and then Melaina had asked a few questions which mostly resulted in one word responses from the five year old.

Now they sat in silence enjoying the cold sticky sweet goodness on a wooded stick.

Melaina decided to try and break the silence, again. "So what do you think of Donna?"

"Mama?"

"Yes, mama."

"I like her. She gave me Conejita." Zamira responded making her older cousin furrow her eyebrows. The five year old held up the bunny that she'd been carrying around the whole day.

The older girl grinned as she took the time to fully examine the stuffed animal. It looked pretty old and most of the bunny looked like it had lost a lot of stuffing, she could tell by the different coloured threads that were stitched into the fur. It also looked worn out and dirty but the child didn't care. She loved the old scruffy stuffed animal that her new mother had gotten her.

"When did you get Conejita?"

"I met Mama last Thanksgiving and she gave her to me." The kid explained as she held the bunny against her chest.

Melaina remembers the day that Donna told her she was going out of town, around the said time of year.

"Do you know your other mama and papa?" The kid nodded her head with a smile before licking her ice cream. "When did you last see them?"

"Last Thanksgiving, same time I met Mama. My other mama and papa were wearing a lot of orange." Zamira explained before licking her ice cream again, Melaina frowned realising how and where she saw her parents.

Zamira noticed the frown and asked a question. "Do you also have a Conejita?"

"I have many. When we get home later I promise to show you all of mine." Melaina assured before booping the girls nose.

The two sat in silence once again, this time it wasn't as awkward.

The two finished their ice creams and began their walk back home. They had just reached the corner go their street when Melaina felt her phone vibrate in her jacket pocket.

She used her free hand, her right hand held Zamira's left as they walked down the sidewalk, to take out her phone.

"Hey Tia." Melaina answered.

"She took Mike!" Hestia said told her in a panicked tone.

"Wait slow down. Who took Mike?"

"Cindy? CINDY BURMAN TOOK MIKE!"

"What!"

"Mike, August and I were with Zeek trying to help Mike with something when Cindy just showed up. August tried to use his powers to fight her off but she was faster , knocked him out and tied me up."

"Are you both okay?" Melaina began to walk at a faster pace, squeezing the younger girls hand slightly.

"August is getting patched up by Harley who's called everyone else she just told me to call you. She's suited up and looks pissed."

"Okay I'll ask the others where to meet. Update me okay?"

"I will love you."

"Love you too Tia." Melaina quickly hung up as they reached the house.

She quickly opened the door and quickly hurried the younger child in. Melaina kneeled down to the five year old.

"Zamira I need to go out for a bit but your grandmothers are here so you'll be find and you'll get to bond with them." She explained to the kid who pouted. "Z." Melaina pleaded.

"Why can't you take me with you Leena?" The girl begged, using the nickname that the two had agreed on, she couldn't say 'Melaina,' and pronounced it as 'Meleena.'

"It's not safe for you okay. When I get back I promise to watch all of the Ice Age movies with you." Melaina explained as she stuck out her pinkie.

Zamira did the same and the two interlocked each other's pinkies before Melaina kissed the top of the child head.

Melaina sprinted up the stairs to her room. She got into her room and practically slammed the door shut.

She stared at the covered mannequin in the corner contemplating whether or not she should wear the suit. She didn't realise how long she was staring until she'd phone began to vibrate again.

"Hey Mrs Whitmore. What's up?"

"Melaina I know this is kind of last minute but could you please go and back up the JSA? Cindy has back up and I have a really bad feeling about tonight." Barbara pleaded as Melaina pulled out the familiar crate from under her bed.

"I'm already suiting up and I promise that we'll get Mike back home safe." The girl assured as she pulled the crate open.

"Thank you so much and please, be careful."

Melaina pulls out the Themyscirian armour and holds it in her hands as she scans over it. "I will." She assures again before hanging up.

Melaina looked between the suit in her hands and the one she'd been working on for months. "Better safe than sorry." She says to herself before putting on the armour.

Once she was done she looked at herself in the mirror. She hadn't noticed this before but the boots made her much taller and there were scratches on the armour from head to toe. She put on the gauntlets and decided to put her hair in a high ponytail.

Cosmo, who Melaina told to stay home while she went out with Zamira sat in front of the door, as if she was trying to stop her from leaving.

"Cosmo. I'll be fine." Melaina assured as she picked up the cat at kissed her head. "See you later." She placed the feline on her bed.

She put her mask on and grabbed the sword and shield before leaving her room.

The girl was half way down the stairs when she was met with her mother.

"If you're going out I might as well give you an extra boost." Diana said as she handed her a golden lasso. "This happened to belong to the woman that your sister was named after."

Melaina smiled as she held the rope in her hands. "I will explain the back story later but you need to hurry and help your friends." Diana said to her daughter.

The fifteen year old was filled with so much excitement that she practically ran into her mothers arms. It shocked the demigoddess but she hugged back before Melaina quickly thanked her and ran out the door.

With the use of the training she received when she was on her mothers home island, she used the lasso to swing from house to house, building to building.

✦✧✦✧

Melaina got to the school at round about the same time that the rest of her team did.

"So the diamond is in there?" Daisy asked the group.

"Yep and the bitch that put her hands on my baby brother." Harley said as her eyes went orange.

"Okay so we just need to get that diamond away from Cindy." Kai said to the group before they all shared a look and went into the school.

They began to run down the hall towards the cafeteria...where they could hear the commotion.

As they approached the door they got into position, Melaina stood in front with Daisy to her left, Harley to her right, Marty behind Daisy and Kai behind Harley.

Melaina's kicked the door open to be met with the scene at hand.

The girl gripped the lasso before it began to glow. She spotted Artemis by Rick and Beth, from where she was she threw the lasso and it wrapped around the archers waist. Melaina, with the help of the lasso managed to throw the girl across the room.

Artemis's scream caught everyone's attention for they all turned their heads towards the source of the rope.

"What the hell?" Artemis groaned as she pulled herself to her feet.

A slight look of relief came from the JSA as they saw their former teammate.

"This going to be fun." Daisy said as she clenched her fists making light form around them.

With nothing but a trail of fire being left behind, Harley was already by Courtney, Josie and Cindy. That caused the other four to disperse.

Melaina ran towards Rick and Artemis who were now fighting in the mens bathroom, Kai went to Beth to see if she was alright and Marty and Daisy went to help Yolanda.

By the time Melaina got there, Artemis was trying to drown Rick in the toilet. She grabbed the back of her suit and threw her away from her friend.

She pulled Rick out of the toilet making him cough and let out a lot of water from his mouth as he coughed.

Melaina put her hand in front of his face before twirling her fingers, her eyes turned blue and she used her powers to get the last of the water out of his lungs.

"When the hell did you learn how to do that?"

"It's a very long story-"

"Behind you!" Rick warned before Artemis used her bat to hit the hero in the back of her head.

Melaina barely had a reaction, the bat on the other hand had a huge dent in it. Rick got up and chased her out the bathroom with Melaina close behind him.

She leaped towards Artemis but before she could lay a hand on her, dark red magic with hints of black surrounded her body and stopped her mid-air.

Rick who barely noticed, continued to fight while Courtney on the other hand saw what her girlfriend was doing.

"Jo! What are you doing?" Courtney asked as she forced Cindy away from her.

"What I came here to do." She answered as she locked eyes with Cindy. Her eyes turned red as her hair turned black. "Why is it so hard for you to stay out of other peoples business?"

Josie spat before throwing Melaina down the Cafeteria. The girl quickly pulled out her sword to soften the landing and to slow her down. She planted the sword to the ground making a scratching sound as it formed sparks on the ground.

"Do you really want to do this now?" Melaina asked making Josie smirk with her raised fist surrounded in magic. "Fine but i warn I've gotten a lot better." Melaina warned as she fastened her shield on her left arm and gripped her sword with her right.

Josie began to throw balls of magic at Melaina who managed to dodge and block all of them with her shield until she got close enough.

"Josephine! I need you to snap out of it!" Melaina yelled at her as she used her shield to pin her against the pillar.

The witch shoved her to the opposite wall before she formed another ball of magic and threw it at her.

Melaina quickly rolled out of the way and got to her feet once again. The girl noticed something different about Josephine, her magic was no longer a vibrant red, it was much darker and had a few highlights of black, literal darkness.

She had been staring for so long that she didn't realise that Josie was about to shoot at her again...and she did. Melaina wasn't fast enough and the witches powers knocked the sword out of her hand.

"Dammit." Melaina groaned as she spotted her sword on the other side of the cafeteria.

She put her shield onto the harness on her back and pulled out her lasso. "What ever Eclipso is doing to you, we can fight it together. I promise you, we can fight it."

"Why do keep going on and on...do you know how pathetic you sound?" Josie said as she and Melaina began to circle each other. "It's really sad to watch you like this. You, the sweet innocent naïve Melaina Astrid Prince-Dumont is in fucking denial."

"I am not in denial." The girl said as her grip on the lasso tightened.

"Really? You don't think I've been hearing what everyone has been saying about me? That I've gone crazy? That I'm different? That I've gone evil?" Josie taunted as they continued to circle each other. "Rumours are true, I've gone bad."

"That's bs because my Josie is still in there and I need her to fight, if no one else will do it for her I will myself."

"Like you fought for Henry?" The moment Josie said those words Melaina let out a roar before she charged towards her.

The lasso was glowing as the enraged teenager tried her hardest to get Josie into the grasp of the rope. Josephine was dodging every whip and kick with ease, the darkness she'd absorbed yesterday had given her a boost.

But just when Josie got a little arrogant Melaina went for it. She used the lasso to block the witches powers before pushed off the wall, making her leap into the air and wrap the lasso around Josephine's hands. Then the moment Melaina landed on her feet, pulled it back as hard as she could making Josephine flip in the air and land on her back.

Melaina walked over to where Josephine was on the ground, the witch was groaning slightly.

"You really need to calm down." Melaina repeated when she finally got to her.

Josie started to snicker, causing Melaina to furrow her eyebrows. "That hurt." Jo said with a smirk. "This will hurt more."

Before Melaina could process, Jo had gotten to her feet and pressed her fingers against Melaina's temple.

Melaina immediately let go of the lasso, her hands went to her ears as she began to scream. Josie watched the girl fall to her knees as she screamed while the witch escaped the knot.

As the girl screamed she saw flashes.

Of Henry's trampled, destroyed body. Of Joeys dead body. Of Steve Trevor dying twice, anything and everything that Josie knew would hurt her.

"YOU LET ME DIE!" Melaina heard and saw Henry say, who was covered in scars, bumps, blood and bruises. As if he had miraculously survived the collapse.

"YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT HIM! YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SAVE ME"The girl heard Jordan Mahkent say, who looked like every single shard of ice on his body was glued back together.

"You'll never be like your mother." She saw Steve Trevor say, who was covered with shards of steel, they were poking out of his skin. Blooding oozing out of them.

"Or your father." She saw her ancestor, Atlan say. Or a skeleton version of him say.

"you're way to weak." She sees Anaya Bowin say with an arrow sticking out of her chest.

"You can't make the hard choices like your parents did." A frozen William Zarick taunted as the said people began to walk towards her.

Melaina began to back away as they got closer then she felt herself trip over something.

"And you can't save anyone!" Joey Zarick said, who was on the ground. Head surrounded by blood.

Melaina began to crawl away as fast as she could as the people began to spit insults left right and centre.

"You couldn't save them then, you can't save them now and you most definitely won't save them later." Josie spat as she made the girl see flashes of her past present and future.

All horrible flashes, memories and things that are yet to come.

Melaina crawled behind a pillar and sat against it. She squeezed her hands onto the sides of her head as she attempted to block out the voices.

As she felt her heart rate speed up the girl felt something other than sadness and fear. She felt anger. A hell lot of it. It bubbled up inside of her and it just began to grow

Her eyes began to glow like that day with her aunts. She then took a deep breath then stepped out of her spot.

She let the anger out.

Before Josie could cast a spell of any kind, Melaina slammed the gauntlets together, destroying the illusions of the deceased and throwing Josephine Zarick right through the wall on the other side of the cafeteria into the hallway.

Melaina felt her chest heave up and down after. Her eyes faded back to their normal colour.

"Shit!" Melaina sighed when she realised what she had done.

She quickly grabbed her lasso and sword and ran towards the hallway.

She looked down the hallway and found the witch passed out against the locker, which had been crushed from the landing.

"Jo? Josie. Shit I'm so sorry. Are you okay?" Melaina said as she hurried over and kneeled down to her.

Josie's eyes popped open and the witch smirked and before Melaina could react, Josie wrapped her hand around Melaina neck. Melaina tried to pry her hand off but Josie kept a tight grip.

The witch began to get to her feet, snapping her bones back into place while keeping her grip.

As she snapped her last bone back into place she stared into Melaina's eyes, the girl was struggling to breathe. Her feet were barely touching the ground, not even the boots helped. Josie kept her raised in the air.

"I've had enough of your bull shit." Josie said before her eyes began to glow. "hanc potestatem"

"Jo...please." Melaina begged as tears filled her eyes from the lack of air in her lungs and the pain in her neck.

"Ut mea capio industriam." the witch continued.

The Amazon-Atlantean began to feel herself being drained, being forced out of her body. The girl began to thrash as she felt the pain spread all over her body.

"Et physiologiam." The witch chanted as her veins filled with blue and gold.

Melaina's thrashing began to slow down as her head began to throb. She gave in to the pain and seconds later her arms and legs were hanging. Her eyes shut closed.

"Quae tecum est." Josie finished with an accomplished smile on her face before throwing Melaina to the opposite lockers.

Not a second later too because Melaina gasped and coughed as she got air into her lungs. She tried to move but felt a sharp pain coming from her back, which stopped her from moving her legs so she tried to crawl away.

Josie on the other hand felt all the power deep into her veins. A grin formed on her face as she watched the girl try to hurry away.

Melaina looked at her with nothing but hatred in her eyes.

Nothing but hatred.

For the first time in her life, Melaina Astrid Prince-Dumont hated...absolutely hated Josephine Paisley Zarick.

With all her mind body and soul.

She didn't only feel hatred but betrayal too. Out of all people she'd lost her for good.

Josie examined herself as Melaina tried to crawl to the nearest classroom.

She looked back at her with tears in her eyes. "Your mom, who's been working her ass off in Central City for months, your twin brother and your dad you be disgusted by who you've become." She says despite the pain from every single syllable.

Melaina knew she crossed a line but she didn't care, she just kept on crawling.

But the moment those words left Melaina's mouth, Josie marched over. She pulled the shield out of the harness and the sword.

First she stomped the heel of her boot onto Melaina's back, causing a cracking sound as the girl screamed in pain and begged her to stop. She then grabbed Melaina's shoulder and flipped her onto her back.

"Don't you ever..." Josie started before plunging The Sword of Athena into Melaina's throat. "Talk about my family again."

She pulls it out. Blood began to fill Melaina's mouth as she began to cough on it as it pour out of the whole in her neck.

"I told you. I'd enjoy it." Josie whispered as she heard a small voice in her head scream.

She drops the sword, it's ripe covered in its owners blood, not to far from her and struts down the hallway.

While her former friend bleeds out on the floor.
