Thursday

"Clay, where's Jeff?"

"S-S-Stop looking at me like that...where is he, please?"

"Mia, I'm so sorry..."

Mia gasps awake, but she immediately coughs trying to catch her breath. Her whole body was in pain. She looks around and blinks, trying to focus her eyes. "C-Clay? Zach?" She weakly calls out. She slowly moves, but quickly screams from the pain in her side. She looks down and her eyes widen as she sees a shard of glass stuck in her side. "Holy shit..." She starts to breathe quickly.

She moves slightly and pain erupts in her body again. "HOLY SHIT!" She screams, tears sliding down her cheeks. She hears a small groan. She turns her head and her eyes widen. "Zach?" She questions. The brunette slowly lays on her good side and pulls herself over to the unconscious boy. "Zach, you have to wake up--Jeff, please!" Mia sobs.

Mia touches Zach's shoulder and shakes him. She moves her hand to her pocket, but she didn't feel her phone. "Shit!" Mia cries out.

"Zach...Zach, you have to wake up, please!" Mia says, she feels her body get heavier as well as her eyelids.

Zach stirs, he groans again and slowly opens his eyes. He looks around and his breathing quickens as he remembers what happened. He turns his head and meets blue eyes. "Mia?" Zach questions. Mia manages a smile, that was filled with pain. "Yes! Yes--okay...Zach, listen to me..." She says in a firm tone.

"Can you...can you get out from under the car?" She asks.

Zach slightly wiggles his legs, his bad leg was in pain and so was his arm. But he was able to move. "I-I can..." Zach slowly slides out from under the car with a grunt.

Mia nods her head, "Th-that's good...you should get to the...hospital now..." Mia whispers, her pain, and exhaustion taking over.

Zach crawls over to her. "Walker, you got to stay awake." He says.

"Why? You're already safe..." She coughs out.

He looks down at the glass in her side. "Okay, Holy Shit..." Zach says. He takes his jacket off. "Here..." He presses his jacket around the glass that was still stuck inside her. Mia cries out in pain.

"I-I accidentally called you Jeff," Mia says in pain. "I guess...having someone important to you  die in a car crash will do something to you." She chuckles but quickly sobs. "I just...wanted t make sure you and Clay were..." Mia's eyes slowly start to close. But her eyes quickly open. "W-Where's Clay?" Mia asks. Her breathing quickens. "No, no, no...where's Clay?!" Mia sobs.

"Clay fucking left." Zach groans in pain, he keeps his hands on her bleeding side.

Mia pulls her brows together, "W-What? What are you...talking about?" She questions.

"I begged him to help me. But he just fucking left us here to die!" Zach's voice filled with anger.

Mia lays her head back on the ground. She was shocked, I mean Clay left Zach to die. He left her to die. But as much as she wanted to punch him, she was also relieved that he was okay.

"Do you have your phone?" She asks.

Zach quickly pulls his phone out. "Yeah, I-I've got it." He says. He starts to dial 9-1-1.

Mia lightly chuckles. "I just came back from the hospital...now I'm going back." Her eyes slowly close, her now unconscious.

==========

All Mia heard was beeping. She opens her eyes and it was just white. "Welcome back to the world, loser." A voice says.

Mia looks around and her eyes land on a younger version of herself. "Shit, you look like shit." She says. "Surprised Clay even had sex with you..." She shakes her head.

Mia looks down at her side and sees the glass was gone. She inhales the pain from breathing still there. She hears footsteps, quick ones. 'Mom' Mia thinks to herself.

"Mia?!" Nora says, she was trying to stay calm but she couldn't. Nora walks over to the bed and holds her daughter's hand. "Are you okay?" She asks.

Mia flits her eyes to her mother's. "Mom, I'm...in pain, but I'm alive. So..." Mia shrugs with a small smile. But her smile falls as she sees her mother's worried face.

"Mom--"

"They said you were in a car crash." Nora closes her eyes. "I was worried...I didn't know whether I'd lost you or--"

Mia lightly squeezes Nora's hand. "You didn't lose me, you didn't...I'm fine," she says.

Nora nods her head, "Who was driving? What happened?" She asks.

"I was at a party and...I needed a ride home. So..." Mia licks her lips. 'Why tell the truth? What's the point?'

"So I asked Zach for a ride. But he was drunk, so...I was driving him home, but...I just...lost control." Mia explains. Why get Zach in trouble? He had enough to handle. What's one more issue for Mia, right?

"Were you...were you drinking?" Nora asks.

"No, mom I ju--"

"High?" She asks.

"Mom, I wasn't--"

"Then what?!--"

"I JUST LOST CONTROL!" Mia screams. Silence fills the room. The brunette closes her eyes. "I just lost control...that's it."

Nora slightly shakes her head. "I just...are you thinking of hurting yourself again?" Nora questions, not wanting to hear the answer.

"No, mom. I swear." Mia looks at her. "I'm sorry, that I scared you. I really am."

==========

"I hate this..." Mia whispers as the car comes to a stop.

"The doctor said, not to put too much weight on your leg and to watch how you sit from your stitches, okay?" Nora parks the car and looks at her daughter.

"Yeah, okay..." Mia says.

"Hey, sweetie," Nora says.

Mia looks at her mom. Nora takes a minute to examine the bruises across her daughter's face. "I love you." She gives her a small smile.

Mia inhales and nods her head, "I love you, too." She says.

Mia unbuckled her seatbelt and opens the car door. She slowly leaves the car and limps to the school doors. "So, now you'll be known as the girl who murdered her dad's friend and the girl who almost got her friends killed in a car crash." Young Mia says.

"Go away," Mia growls.

"Nah, I like it here..." Young Mia runs up the steps to the school. "Come on, we've got a big day ahead of us."

Mia inhales and enters the school. She looks around to find a specific face, she stops and exhales. "Zach." She calls out to him.

He turns to her and tenses. "Hey, Mia." He greets her.

"How are you?" She questions. "Do you need help with anything like to carry a bag or...something?" She asks.

Zach slightly shakes his head, "Why do you want to help me any more than you already did?" he asks.

Mia chuckles, "You were in a car crash, dude." She states.

"Yeah, so were you. And you saved my fucking life and you took the blame for driving the car." He says. "Why would you do that? You should fucking hate me."

Mia bites the inside of her cheek, "Zach--"

"Bryce would still be alive right now if I hadn't--"

"But he's not." Mia cuts him off. "My brother is...gone. So...why should our lives be any more fucking miserable from guilt and...hate?" Mia shrugs. "Before all of this misery happened to me...I was a nice fucking person."

Zach moves his head from left to right. "I wouldn't be too sure about that." He says.

"Ouch, Zachy." Mia lightly hovers her hand over her heart. They both laugh. "I'm just...trying to be better." Mia shrugs.

Zach purses his lip. "Well, I wish I had that motivation," he says. "Thank you for offering to carry my bag, but I can handle it." Zach limps away.

Mia sighs and slumps her shoulders.

==========

"Mia, please can you talk to me?" Clay catches up to the brunette.

Mia stops walking but doesn't look at him, "Clay, I have to go to the bathroom." She limps away from him but he continues to follow her. Mia sighs, "You're going to follow me into the bathroom?" She questions.

Clay tenses up, "W-what? No, I was just...going to follow you, then wait outside the bathroom for you. But--"

"What do you want to talk about?" Mia asks, she turns to him. Clay's jaw tightens as he sees the bruises on her face. "I-I-I'm sorry, about the crash I didn't--"

"I think you should save your apologies for someone who needs it. Like...Zach." Mia stops and turns to him. "Did you apologize to him?" She asks.

"I did, he wants me to stay out of his life," Clay says.

Mia nods her head, "I don't blame him." The brunette continues to walk away from Clay, but he follows. "You did leave him to die," Mia adds, anger hinting at her voice. "And me."

"Mia, I don't remember anything that happened that night. Really," he says. Mia turns to him. "You don't remember anything like--at all?" She asks, her mind going back to the party when everything was good. Clay didn't really forget that they had sex, right?

Before Clay could answer the P.A. beeps. "May I have your attention, please?" Mia looks around the halls and sees no one except for her and Clay. "We are currently moving into a lockdown situation. Code Red. This is a hard lockdown. Staff, please initiate lockdown procedures immediately."

Mia inhales quickly. "Holy shit..." She exhales. "Students, please do not panic, and listen closely to this announcement and the instructions of your teacher. Seek immediate shelter in the nearest classroom."

Clay quickly grabs Mia's hand and pulls her into a room.

"I repeat. This is a Code Red. Hard Lockdown."
