College Interview
The door slowly opens and the brunette opens her eyes. She knew those footsteps, it's like the quickness in them also had disappointment as well. She slowly opens her eyes and looks at her mom. "Hey, mom." Mia waves a hand, revealing the handcuffs.
Nora presses her lips together. Mia looks over at Officer Standall. He handcuffs the brunette. "Thanks." She says, rubbing her wrist.
He nods his head and looks at Nora. Mia stands up. "Ms. Walker, can I talk to you for a minute?" he asks.
Mia presses her lips together. "I'll wait by the car..." She says before quickly walking out of the station. She grabs her phone and starts to text Justin asking about Clay's whereabouts. Mia bites her thumbnail. "Let's go." Her mother voices.
She brushes past Mia and gets into the driver seat. Mia sighs, she gets in the passenger seat. "Mom--"
"Mia," Nora says, she looks over at her daughter. "You have been doing so well..." She shales her head. "But now, it's like you don't care about your future anymore." She sighs.
"I didn't do anything!" Mia snaps. "I was helping Clay--"
"Right, Clay Jensen." Nora scoffs. "Are you dating him again?" She asks.
Mia chuckles. "No--"
"Then why help him?" Nora asks.
Mia inhales, "Mom, that drill was bullshit, Clay had a breakdown!" Mia exclaims.
"You almost died for him, Mia!" Nora snaps.
Mia pulls her brows together. "Clay Jensen almost got you killed," Nora growls.
Mia shakes her head, "Clay wouldn't hurt me, mom." she states. "You don't know him."
Nora looks at the brunette and shakes her head. She starts the car, Mia looks down at her phone and swallows. She doesn't care about what her mom says, she's worried about Clay and she'll stay up for him. End of story.
"I understand that you love him," Nora says in a more calm tone.
Mia looks at her mom. "But...you have to think about yourself first, sweetie," Nora says with a soft smile. "Clay Jensen is a good person, I know that and I shouldn't have talked about him like that, I'm sorry."
Mia rubs her lower lip. "It's fine, mom." She says quietly. The brunette looks out the window.
Mia thinks about herself, right? I mean she does think about what other people need. Maybe her mom was right.
==========
Mia groans and lightly pulls her dress down. "I want to change." She groans.
"Oh, please...you look gorgeous." Gwen states. "If Clay could see you now he would totally--"
"Oh, God!" Mia covers her ears. "Stop it..." She shakes her head.
Gwen laughs, "Well you guys did have sex right...twice?" She asks.
Mia sighs, "Yeah, but...Clay doesn't remember that." She states.
Gwen pulls her brows together, "How could he not remember? I mean...you're Mia Walker!" she raises her voice. "If I were a man I would have sex with you." She shrugs, "And I wouldn't forget it."
Mia presses her lips together and she nods her head. "That...oddly made me feel better." She admits.
Gwen smiles proudly, "Of course it did. I'm Gwen." the girl pats Mia on the head and walks away.
Mia chuckles and rolls her eyes. She feels someone grab her arm, Mia quickly twists the person's wrist and presses it behind their back. "Fucking shit, Ow!" Justin growls.
"Oh! I'm sorry!" Mia quickly lets go of Justin's wrist and covers her mouth. He glares at her and her hand falls to the side. "I'm so sorry." She whispers. "Why did you grab me?" She asks.
"It's Clay, he fucking escaped," Justin states, rubbing his wrists.
Mia raises her brows, "What?" She questions. "He escaped, the Psych Ward?" She asks.
Justin nods his head. Mia purses her lips. "Is it bad that I'm impressed?" She asks.
"Yes! Mia!" Justin barks. Mia arches a brow, "I thought I would've been the one to be sent to a Psych Ward...or at least escape one." the brunette touches her earlobe.
Justin sighs, he stuffs his hands in his pockets. "Yeah, me too." He nods.
Mia looks at Justin with an annoyed expression. "Ha." the brunette exhales.
Mia bites her thumbnail, thinking about what to do. But then she stops thinking about that.
"But...you have to think about yourself first, sweetie."
"Well...I hope you find him." Mia presses her lips together, she turns to walk away.
Justin pulls his brows together. "Mia, wait." He walks beside her. "Where are you going?" he asks.
"Class, Justin." Mia answers. "Can't lose focus on the important things," Mia says.
"So, Clay isn't important--"
"Of course he is!" Mia snaps. "That's the problem, all I think about is...my past, what I've done, what I didn't do, and I think about Clay." Mia chuckles. "I've been focusing on other people, and...I have to start thinking about myself as well, okay?"
Justin inhales and slowly nods his head. "Okay, I get that...I really do," he says. "And honestly, I'm glad that you are thinking about yourself."
Mia tilts her head and smiles. "That is why you're my best friend, Jensen." She lightly punches him.
Justin chuckles softly. "Jensen?" He questions.
Mia arches a brow, "Do you not like that?" She asks. "Justin Foley-Jensen has a nice ring to it."
Justin smirks, "I guess..." He looks down at his shoes.
Mia laughs, "Justin you're blushing!" She lightly pokes him.
Justin lightly smacks her hand away, "Stop it!"
==========
"I've felt so afraid of so many things for so long." Clay states with exhaustion. "I mean, I don't even think I can ever remember not being afraid."
"Try." Dr. Ellman says. "Try to tell me...about a time you felt safe--taken care of."
Clay throws his hands in the air. "I...I don't know. I don't know." He admits.
"Go as far back as you need to." Dr. Ellman advises. "Or...maybe that time is closer than you think."
Clay pulls his brows together. When has he felt safe? A memory goes through his mind and he feels himself become calmer. He walks over to the chair and sits down. "I remember this time...it wasn't a long time ago, but--God, it feels like it..." Clay looks at his hands.
"I was supposed to be going on a date with Mia, then I got this cold." Clay states. "We had to cancel our date, I stayed in that day...but..." Clay lightly chuckles. "There was a knock at the door and it was Mia. She had soup, all the Lord of the Rings movies, and even the latest issue of Alien Killer Robots."
"She had this big smile on her face when I asked her why she was there and you know what she said?" Clay questions. "We had a date, dumbass and we're gonna have it." Clay quietly laughs. "We were watching movies together, her hand was running through my hair, and that soup was so good." Clay smiles. "We were together and...she was just...looking at me with that soft look she always gave me when she was worried but just wanted other people to feel safe." Clay slightly shakes his head. "I was just glad she was there..."
"Why do you think Mia worries? Why do you think your parents worry?"
"I don't...I don't want them to." Clay admits.
"But why do you think they do?" Dr. Ellman asks.
"Because of...everything I do. Because of the...the trouble I've caused. Because I'm not right." Clay adds.
"Do you think if you were perfect, they'd never worry...about where you were, what you were doing, if you were healthy? Happy? Safe?" Dr. Ellman questions.
"I guess they would," Clay says.
"Then when they do, can you try to remember that feeling of being glad they're there? You're parents?"
Clay nods his head, "I can try, yeah." he says.
"Then perhaps you can start to believe that there are people in your life...that wanna take care of you. That want you to do well. Parents, teachers, doctors. Even college interviewers."
Clay slowly nods his head. "I can try."
