DAISY JONES AND THE SIX
001. | "come and get it"
JENNY DUNNE (rhythm guitarist, Daisy Jones & The Six): Where should I start?
INTERVIEWER: From the beginning, What was your childhood like?
JENNY: Absolutely chaotic. I was born in Pittsburgh and grew up with my two brothers, Billy and Graham. We were raised by our mother, as a single mom, that women never experience a moment of peace and quiet after we were born.
BILLY DUNNE (lead vocalist, Daisy Jones & The Six): I was seven when dad left, Graham was four, and Jenny was two. One of the only memories I have of him was when he told us he was leaving.
GRAHAM DUNNE (lead guitarist, Daisy Jones & The Six): I don't think Jenny and I have any recollection of him from when we were young. The only thing we had from him was an old silvertone guitar. One we all constantly fought over.
JENNY: We all loved that guitar; we all loved making music. Eventually, mom got frustrated with the fighting, so she saved up and bought Graham and I our own guitars.
BILLY: And that's when it all started.
JENNY: I was pretty young when they started the band. The best part about it was that it was all due to some silly girl. Graham's first girlfriend, to be exact; I still remember him sitting in that bed mopping over her. He refused to do anything; it was kinda sad.
He was like that for quite a while until Billy gave him a pep talk. It was something about how girls love musicians, so Graham obviously decided to start a band, and that was that.
EDDIE ROUNDTREE (bassist, Daisy Jones & The Six): I remember the first time I met Jenny like it was yesterday. We'd been friends with Graham for a while, but we'd never run into her before.
JENNY: Billy brought me to their first band rehearsal not on purpose, though; I bribed him to take me to the record store that morning, and his payback was forcing me to sit through that rehearsal with him.
The two siblings walked down the driveway toward Chuck Loving's garage, "This is going to be so stupid." Jenny groaned as she scuffed her feet against the pavement.
This dumb band rehearsal was the last thing she wanted to attend, sitting in a gross garage listening to a few pubescent teenage boys try and play a bunch of instruments. The pure idea was enough for her to want to run away.
"If I have to listen, so do you," Billy replied, not caring about the constant complaints that had been coming from his younger sister since they had left the record store he worked at. He wasn't too enthused about doing this either, but he loved Graham; they both did. For him, they'd suck it up and sit through this damned joke of a band rehearsal.
Once they reached those doors, all four of the boys immediately stopped. Graham Dunne and Chuck Loving's eyes were glued to Billy. Both were slightly surprised that the older boy had even bothered to show and watch them, and then there was Eddie Roundtree and Warren Rojas...
Their eyes both looked like they were about to pop out of their heads. Jennifer Dunne was probably one of the prettiest girls they'd seen. That or they were both horny teenagers and Graham had been hiding her from them for years.
Jenny studied them all, but the one who caught her eyes was the boy who was slightly taller than the others. Something about that dirty blonde hair matched with his brown eyes intrigued her.
"Billy, you came!" Graham ran up to his brother, the three boys following close behind him. He didn't even realize his little sister was standing right next to him.
"See, I told you, he didn't give a shit if I came." She rolled her eyes at the lack of recognition that Graham had given her.
Jenny and Graham were close, there was no doubt about it, but at that age, he worshiped his older brother's opinion. His little sister usually was proud of him no matter what he did where Billy, well getting praised by Billy was like winning an award.
"I do, I do, Jen." He stuttered out after realizing his baby sister had also made an appearance.
"Yeah, whatever. Who are these guys? I thought I was your only friend?" She sassed back, still not fully appreciating the response from him. Causing the boys behind him to chuckle.
"Oh yeah, um, this is Chuck Loving, Eddie Roundtree and-" Graham began to introduce his little group.
"Warren Rojas." The boy with dark hair winked in Jenny's direction.
JENNY: I wasn't invited to join the band at first like Billy was; my brothers claimed I was just too young, but if you ask me, the idea of their little sister running around with a bunch of boys petrified them. For a while, they were banned from even talking to me... not that they listened.
GRAHAM: I wasn't the one who was against bringing Jenny into the band; that girl could play the guitar better than any of us. I suggested it a few times, but Billy shut it down every time, every damn time.
BILLY: She was fifteen, for god sake. I couldn't have her running around with a bunch of idiots, especially when they all sat there and just stared at the girl. I was her older brother. It was my job to protect her.
WARREN ROJAS (drummer, Daisy Jones & The Six): C'mon, how could we not look at little Jenny Dunne? She used to strut around in the shortest shirts and a bikini top; I'm pretty sure she did it to piss Billy off, but fuck I wasn't complaining, neither was Eddie. The girl was smoking hot.
EDDIE: I think we were all a bit stunned by Jenny, and I'm pretty sure all three of us had a thing for her when we first met her.
JENNY: Even though I wasn't in the band, I quickly became their biggest fan. I'd force Graham to take me to the shows. It's actually how I learned to drive, I was like there little chauffeur. He'd never admit it, but I think Graham liked having me around, especially when things went wrong...
The moment Billy bolted off the stage and left, she knew something was wrong. Her brother could be dramatic, but there was a look in his eyes she had never seen, and she was quick to follow behind him. Though she regretted not wearing warmer clothes as she stepped out of the reception door. Chills flew through her body as she watched her brother in distress. It became 10 times worse when she saw Graham.
"What the hell is going on? Why do you both look like you saw a ghost?" Jenny's teeth chattered at her lack of a jacket. Eddie was the first to notice that the young girl was freezing out there; he was quick to unbutton his suit jacket and wrap it around her. He was still pumped with adrenaline, and quite honestly, she needed it more.
Eddie quickly gained a soft spot for the youngest Dunne sibling. Though he wasn't pleased that his jacket was now covering her short dress.
"Thanks." She whispered to the older boy before turning her attention back to her brothers. "What's wrong?" Everyone else stayed quiet, just as confused as Jenny was. They all assumed that something had gone wrong with the set. But their performance was one of their best.
Graham sighed, "You see the guy in there in the plaid suit?" He asked, looking at everyone, hoping he wouldn't have to be the one to admit who this god-awful man was.
Warren let out a laugh "Who? The creepster with the comb-over and the girl half his age?" He was a disaster. They all were sweaty with beat red faces from having the jam session of their lives.
"That's our dad."
JENNY: I was quite literally almost beside the asshole as I watched them play, but I was two when the man left; I had no recollection of what he looked like. Billy knew him, and he had a dad for seven years, whereas Graham and I didn't. To us, that man never existed. He was just someone who hurt our mother and brother by leaving us. I still hated that creep.
Every year at our school, there was a father-daughter dance. All the girls were so excited to bring their dads and have one special night with them. I remember being crushed because I didn't have a father to go with, and I think that was the only time I ever wanted to have a dad. It didn't last long though Billy quickly stepped in and took me, and from then on, he and Graham took turns taking me. I didn't need him when I had brothers like them, but that didn't mean that they didn't.
The oldest Dunne sibling and the youngest one just stared at each other. One looked like he was about to kill a man, and the other one looked as if all the feelings she had pushed down for years had finally re-emerged.
That look on Jenny's face was what pushed Billy over the edge. "I'm gonna say something," Billy stated before making a run towards the door. Easily dodges both of his siblings try to block him in the process.
JENNY: The dirtbag deserved whatever was coming towards him.
Jenny looked at her father for what felt like the first time ever. She hated him, she hated that she could see her brothers in his face but mostly, she hated that she could see herself in his face. Billy was pressed up against the man "You know who I am?" He spat at the man in front of him.
Graham and Jenny stood on either side of their brother. "Yeah, who are we, old man?" Jenny asked, ready to pounce on him.
"Should I know you?" He asked back, a stupid smile beginning to appear on his face. A smile they all wanted to whip off his face.
"Yeah, you should," Billy growled. The boys stood behind but were ready to have to pull him away, but he never lunged.
"Well, then, of course, I do."
Jenny started to take a step towards him, but Eddie quickly pulled the girl back against his chest. "You fucking asshole." She growled. She didn't move from the boy though part of her needed some comfort, and Eddie just happened to be there at that moment. He happened to be exactly what she needed.
EDDIE: I think at the moment, I was afraid he would hurt her. I also think that it was partly that I wanted to be the one to save and comfort her.
JENNY: I probably would have killed him if Eddie hadn't grabbed me, to be completely honest with you.
Hank's eyes wandered towards Billy's guitar that was still sitting on the stage, his old guitar "I'd recognize that guitar anywhere." of course, that's what he recognized, not the three children he abandoned standing in front. "Anything else?"
Graham quickly grabbed Billy's shoulder, "Hey." Billy tried to shrug him off, but that just caused Graham to grab him harder. "He's not worth it, all right?"
"He's right, Billy." Jenny chirped in; Eddie still held onto her to make sure she didn't slip away.
Eventually, Billy got away from Graham's grasp and just sprinted up to the stage. He grabbed the guitar, Hank's guitar. He came back down and just shoved the guitar into the hands of their father. "Take it." Billy yelled, "go on, take it." He screamed, drawing all the attention to their little group. Yet he refused, and Billy kept yelling until the guitar was in pieces on the concrete floor.
JENNY: And that's the last time I saw him, well actually, the last I saw him, he was catching his breath after Graham clocked him in the face. He shouted some terrible comments at us, but that wasn't what bugged me. I couldn't believe that he didn't even remember our names, his children, the kids he named. His drunk ass couldn't help but forget his children's names. I never wanted a dad after that point. In some way, it was a kind of closure for me.
The cool air hit Jenny once again as they all ran outside. She cuddled further into the suit jacket Eddie had given to her. "Guess we're not getting paid for that gig, huh?" Warren tried to lighten the mood. Not that it worked.
"Are you okay?" Eddie asked Jenny, and the girl had a blank look on her face. She finally understood why it looked as if Billy and Graham saw a ghost. "Jen?" He waved a hand in front of her face, catching her attention. "Huh?"
"You alright, kid." Graham beat Eddie to re-asking the question. "Yeah." She said. Graham wrapped an arm around her smaller shoulders until their older brother brought them into a huddle. All of them, the whole band.
"You're my brothers and, well, sister. I love you. We work hard, we stick together, and we're gonna be the biggest fucking band in the world someday. Do you trust me?
They were all silent until Warren piped up, "Yeah, you kidding me, man!"
JENNY: He was right, don't tell him that, though. We would become the fucking biggest band in the world.
