5 • just a monster
Bellamy bugged me when he pulled that whole privileged thing to get everyone on his side
Hope you guys are enjoying. I hope you remember when I mentioned that this is going to be a slow burn sorta thing.
You know Bellamy - not too quick to rush into stuff like that. And Theo's not exactly handing out friendship bracelets, either.
——————————
Clarke shook her head after Bellamy's little speech and walked. Not waiting, I caught up to her. "Please tell me we're going after Jasper?"
She nodded with a small smile, hitching her backpack up higher on her shoulder. I waved to Monty, signalling for him to follow. He was Jasper's other friend, I wasn't about to leave him behind. Maeve had gone to speak to some people she knew, while Carter had taken Octavia to get her leg checked out.
"Just let me get some supplies from the Drop Ship, and then we're going."
"And we're not coming back without him," I stated, not leaving any room for the thought that it was even a question.
Monty nodded in agreement, "There's no way. He's my best friend, we're not leaving him out there with them."
"Alright," Clarke said, "Monty come with me, I need your help finding some things on the Drop Ship. Theo-"
"I need to go and check on Octavia," I interrupted. "She can't come with us, I know that. I just want to make sure her leg is doing okay and that she knows we're going after Jasper. Also, I want to talk to Bellamy."
"Do you think you can get him to come with us?" Clarke asked me.
Monty stopped walking, eyebrows raised. "Are you kidding me right now? He just turned everyone on you, and you want to ask him for help? Do you realise how stupid that sounds?"
Ignoring Monty, I looked at Clarke, "And how am I supposed to manage that?"
"Like Monty said," Clarke shrugged, "He wants everyone on his side. So, we use it to our advantage, because what is a wannabe leader without any followers?"
With a nod, I separated from them and went in search of Octavia and Bellamy. Maeve and I had each lent our shoulders to her on the way back so that she didn't have to apply all of her weight to her injured leg, but there wasn't much else we could do.
She tried to act like she wasn't in pain, but I knew better. Octavia didn't like to appear weak. Her whole life she had been under protection and hadn't been able to be independent. Things had changed in the Sky Box. She had changed.
Octavia wanted to be her own person, and being on the ground was finally going to allow her to do that.
I eventually found them over by a small grouping of rocks. Octavia sat upon one with her pant leg rolled up to allow Bellamy to press a piece of cloth against it to clean it.
"How're you going?" I asked her as I knelt down beside Bellamy to look at her leg. "That looks sore."
Octavia winced as Bellamy pressed a bit harder, his eyes flickering to me for a moment before getting back to his sister.
"Oh, just great," she sighed, taking a deep breath.
"Well, just look at it this way, it could be worse," I shrugged.
Octavia chuckled lightly, but Bellamy did not. He craned his neck to glare at me. "Look at her leg. How could it be worse?"
"She could be dead," I snapped, glaring right back at him.
He removed the cloth from Octavia's leg, "She'll be fine, no thanks to you or your friends. That's why I came down here; to look after her."
"And you're doing a real bang-up job of that," I praised sarcastically. "How about you stick to bossing around your mindless drones?"
Bellamy and I knelt there, just glaring at each other, not wanting to be the first to back down. I hadn't been this close to him before; close enough to see all of the details of his face.
He had dark brown eyes, which softened the hard exterior he tried to portray. His lips were set in a straight line, trying not to show any emotion. What caught me though, was the constellation of freckles sprinkled across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose; I felt like they made him look younger and less threatening. They suited him.
When it was clear that neither of us was giving in, Octavia leaned forward and shoved us both lightly. "Enough. Honestly, I wouldn't have guessed that I was younger than you two, acting like you're having a staring contest as if you're both six-goddamn-years old."
"It's not my fault your brother's acting like a dick, Octavia," I told her.
"I appreciate what you did for my sister back in the Sky Box when I couldn't be there for her, but that gratitude will only go so far Sutton," Bellamy warned me.
Was he for real right now?
"You don't think she told me what happened?" I asked. "She was only in the Sky Box because of your carelessness, Blake. And are you really threatening me? What are you gonna do that's worse than this whole situation? Kill me? First psychotic leader, now a murderer. Honestly, who do you think you are?"
"You know what? I held my tongue for Octavia's sake, but I'm done. You can call me psychotic as much as you want, but as far as I've heard, only one of the two of us here has been charged with murder," he bit back.
I stood up, glaring down at him. "You have no idea what you're talking about."
"Really? Because I was on patrol that night and I was one of the Guards who responded to the call. I saw you covered in blood and that knife in your hand."
He didn't seem familiar and I couldn't place which Guard he was. There were a few of them, and they were wearing helmets. Plus, I was a bit too busy to take any notice of their appearance.
But that didn't matter. From what he was saying, he didn't seem to be lying. He had been there that night; seen me at my lowest moment.
My jaw went stiff and my body became rigid as I tried to deflect his words. "Go float yourself."
"What? You can dish it, but you can't take it?"
I had questioned his commitment to his sister and he wasn't backing down. He stood up also and I immediately lost my upper hand as soon as he did so, his height giving him the advantage. "Well, if I've got it wrong, maybe we should check with one of your parents. No, wait," Bellamy began to trail off, his head falling to the side.
"Bell, stop," Octavia tried to warn her brother as she saw my fingers curl into fists. I had told her all about that night and she believed me, which I was endlessly thankful for. But Bellamy ignored his sister's warnings.
He then finished what he was saying, "You killed one of them and the other one practically disowned you on the spot. Other people here, most of them are basic criminals, but you? You're just a monster."
"Bellamy," Octavia hissed.
"No," he laughed darkly. "No, I want to know, what was it like to watch someone bleed out in front of you, Sutton?"
I didn't hesitate as I brought my fist up and punched him across the face as hard as I could. "If you don't watch your mouth, you're gonna find out first hand."
He stumbled as he cupped his jaw where I had connected. It took me a moment to notice that he was chuckling beneath his breath. He had managed to get under my skin and I had reacted; meaning he had won.
"Theo," Octavia gasped lightly as she stared at me in shock. I had never done anything like that ever. Not even before I was sent to the Sky Box.
Murphy, Bellamy's lackey, moved towards me but Bellamy held up his free hand to tell him to stay where he was.
"Don't act like you know everything about me just because you think you saw something. You saw the end result, you have no idea what happened that night and you don't know shit about me," I growled as I attempted to steady my breathing. "Now, you're going to bring that gun that you're trying to hide in your waistband, and you're going to help us find Jasper."
"And what makes you think I'll do that?" He asked as he narrowed his eyes at me. I felt like he was trying to figure me out.
I thought about what Clarke had said to say, but I was past flattering his ego. "Because Jasper was the one who saved your sister, again, when you couldn't. And if I killed one of my own parents, then what's stopping me from killing you?"
Before he could answer Clarke finally arrived. She was only accompanied by Wells, no Monty. He must've been working on something to help, his skills were beyond what a majority of us knew.
"We good over here?" Clarke asked. I was thankful that she didn't seem to have seen what had just occurred.
"I'm coming too," Octavia claimed as she tried to stand up.
Bellamy was quick to turn around and force her to sit back down, forgetting about his jaw which was already beginning to bruise. "No, no. No way. Not again."
"He's right. Your leg's just gonna slow us down," Clarke stated. "Theo, did you ask Bellamy?"
Bellamy looked at me over his shoulder, "That's one word for it."
I felt myself shrink somewhat beneath his glance. Why was I feeling a trace amount of guilt over what had happened? He had deserved it.
Surprisingly, Bellamy didn't tell Clarke what I had done.
"Murphy, with me. Atom?" The boy named Atom walked over when he was called.
"My sister doesn't leave this camp. Is that clear?"
"I don't need a babysitter," Octavia told him, not impressed with how her brother was treating her.
However, I agreed. It would be safer for everyone if she stayed at the camp. For her, because she was already injured and for us because - as Clarke had already pointed out - she would just slow us down. It wouldn't be easy to escape an attack if we had someone who was injured before it began.
Bellamy completely ignored her, turning to Atom. "Anybody touches her, they answer to me." After Atom nodded, Bellamy looked at the rest of us. "Let's go."
As I went to follow Octavia got me to stop. "Wait, Theo. I'm sorry for what Bellamy said. He can be a real jerk sometimes. I promise he's not always like that."
I half scoffed and rolled my eyes. "I knew someone was going to say something eventually. And I hope so, or this whole situation just got even more unbearable. Sorry for punching him."
"He had it coming," she smiled softly. Her smile then faded as her face grew serious, "Do you want me to tell him the truth? You know, he might back off if he knew."
I shook my head. "They didn't believe me back on the Ark, what's a change of scenery gonna do?" She looked like she wanted to answer, but she didn't know how to. "I'll see you when I get back."
Octavia tried her best to follow, but Atom grabbed her and pulled her back towards the camp. There was no way she was getting anywhere; Atom wasn't going to risk disappointing the mighty Bellamy.
Clarke and Wells walked ahead of me and Bellamy and Murphy behind me. I zoned out, not listening to either pair as I walked along.
Even if Bellamy was there, that didn't mean anything. The guards arrived after - they didn't see what happened, and they were never going to believe the girl covered in blood. They didn't even try to.
After I cleared my head, I eventually caught up with Clarke and Wells, not wanting to fall behind and be stuck walking with Bellamy and Murphy. We continued walking in our separated manner for a solid half an hour before the two boys jogged slightly to catch up with Clarke, Wells and me.
"Hey, hold up," Bellamy said to us. No one responded, we all just carried on trudging through the forest growth. "What's the rush? You don't survive a spear through the heart."
This made me answer him. "Don't think I won't punch you again."
"Put the gun away, Bellamy," Wells said in an authoritative tone; he reminded me of his father for a split second. It was only then that I noticed the boy was practically waving around the handgun he'd had on him since arriving here.
Murphy took a step forward, shoving Wells, "Well, why don't you do something about it, huh?" He really didn't like the Chancellor's son.
Clarke wasn't taking any of their shit as she sighed, stopping to look at the boys. "Jasper screamed when they moved him."
"We're not giving up on him." I nodded in agreement, "If the spear had struck his heart, he'd have died on the spot."
"You'd know all about that, wouldn't you?" Murphy smirked.
I felt my hands making fists once more, but Clarke placed a hand on my arm, helping me to stay grounded. Thank God she was there, or I might've beaten him senseless. Well, I would've tried.
"It doesn't mean we have time to waste."
Bellamy grabbed Clarke's wrist, lifting it towards him, "As soon as you take this wristband off, we can go."
The blonde was quick to rip herself from his grasp, "The only way the Ark is gonna think I'm dead is if I'm dead. Got it?"
"Brave princess," Bellamy almost laughed, his face contorting into a self-righteous smile. How he and Octavia could be related was beyond me.
"Hey, why don't you find your own nickname?"
For a moment, I was confused. Wells sounded an awful lot like spacewalker. It made more sense when Finn emerged from the trees, looking almost angry. "You call this a rescue party? Got to split up, cover more ground. Clarke, come with me."
And with that, Clarke and Finn were walking off on the remaining of us. Wells looked hurt that she had left him. From what Clarke had said, Wells was the reason her dad was floated and she was put in the Sky Box, but from what I could see he had feelings for her. Which didn't really add up if he was the one who had snitched - you would never hurt someone you loved like that.
Maybe someone had bribed him with something. And yet, he ended up here with the rest of us anyway.
We exchanged silent looks before Bellamy began to walk. Wells and Murphy followed silently, only giving Clarke and Finn a five-metre or so gap. After everything Bellamy had said though, I found myself concerned. What if he was actually right? What if Jasper was already dead?
I don't think I'd be able to handle that.
"Come on, Sutton," Bellamy called as he turned back to me. "We're burning daylight."
