"๐'๐ ๐ก๐ข๐ง coming to school today." Riley held her phone against her ear, going through the clothes in her closet to see what she could wear to her and Clay's court hearing.
And she was only going to testify because Mrs. Baker had begged her to.
"Clay and I go to court to testify for Hannah."
"Are you coming later in the evening? Or are you just not coming to school?"
"Hopefully, I'll be there later on." She sighed, pulling out a maroon dress and laying it out on her bed before she crouched down, and grabbed a pair of heels from the bottom of her closet.
"You'll be fine, baby. I promise."
Riley let out a sigh, "I should go get ready."
"Okay. I love you."
Riley smiled softly, "I love you too, Scotty."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ง๐๐๐ฆ ๐๐ฆ weird." Riley heard Clay as she walked down the stairs and towards the kitchen.
"You should have some pancakes." Justin's voice flowed through her ears as she now stood behind Clay, who was also dressed for the court hearing, "They're fucking amazing."
"I'll get you guys a plate." Matt tells his son and niece, standing up.
"Wow. Honey, you--,"
"I don't think I've ever seen you wear a dress." Justin cut Lainie off before he chuckled, "Oh, no. Wait. There were those two dances Jeff took you too."
"Oh, I thought you lost that necklace." Lainie pointed to the silver ' J ' necklace around her niece's neck.
"I just took it off a couple months ago." She mumbled, moving to sit next to Justin and laid her head on his shoulder.
"Clay, your dad is gonna take the two of you to court today." Lainie tells the two.
"Great."
"I wish I could be there." She says, noticing Riley rolling her eyes slightly.
"Really, no problem?" Clay reached across the table and took Justin's pancake. "We've got this. And you've got alt-Clay here, so..."
Riley watched her cousin walk out before she heard him call her name, "What?" She walked outside to see what he needed.
In his hands was the newspaper, "Hannah lied" written in the same red lettering as the other threats, including her own.
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
๐ฅ๐๐๐๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐๐ง in the courtroom next to her uncle as Clay sat on the stand. She was nervous for when she had to go up there, but she knew that it was what she had to do so that Hannah could get the justice that she truly deserved.
"She was faithful. She was kind to me and cared about what happened to me." Clay spoke, Dennis standing in front of him. "She never gossiped or told lies about people."
"And what sort of things did you do together?" Dennis asked.
"We talked about...books and shows and sometimes eclipses and zombies and helmets and...and I guess our...our hopes and dreams."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐๐๐๐ฌ, ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ'๐ฉ๐ testified today that Hannah was a victim of a culture of bullying at Liberty High." Sonya now stood in front of the boy. "But isn't it true that you are also a part of that culture?"
"No, I don't think I am." Clay answered.
"Isn't it true that you took pictures of Tyler Down through his window that you then circulated around the school via social media." Sonya questioned.
"Yes, but--,"
"Objection, your honor." Dennis spoke up. "Beyond the scope of direct."
Sonya turned to the judge, "Your honor, he's already testified to the nature of bullying at Liberty."
"I'll allow it." The judge says.
"Clay, isn't it true that you were suspended from school for possession of marijuana?" Sonya asked, causing Riley to tense up.
"It wasn't mine, I was set up." Clay shook his head.
"I see." Sonya says, "And at any point subsequent to that suspension, did you attempt to buy more marijuana?"
Riley closed her eyes, pinching the bridge of her nose as she remembered Clay going to Bryce's house and telling the Walker boy that he wanted to buy more weed but in reality was there to record Bryce's confession about him raping Hannah.
"Yes, but I was--,"
"And isn't it true that your vandalism caused thousands of dollars of damage to Zach Dempsey's car?" Questioned Sonya.
"I was angry at him. I--I paid for the damage." Clay tells her.
"What did you do when you were angry at Courtney Crimsen?" Sonya asked.
"I just took her to Hannah's grave." Clay says.
"And isn't it true that you accused her of being responsible for Hannah's death?"
"She is responsible. All of those kids are responsible." Said Clay.
"Are you responsible, Clay?" Sonya tilted her head to the side, "Are you responsible for Hannah's death?"
Clay looked over at his cousin, who sent him a soft smile before he took a deep breath, "Yes, I am. I let her down. But there are kids who did a lot worse, kids who you let skate, who did things you won't even talk about. And adults at Liberty don't--,"
Sonya cut him off, "Request to strike that as non-responsive."
"So ordered." The judge spoke. "The jury will ignore that answer."
"Clay, you testified that you were Hannah's friend." Sonya says, "But never her boyfriend. Is that correct?"
"Yes."
"And you said that you kissed her once. Is that correct?"
Clay nodded, "Yes."
"Did you ever spend a night together?" Sonya asked.
"You mean, have...have sex? No." Clay answered.
"No. I mean, spend a night together, evening, night, into the next morning." Sonya tells him. "Clay, did you and Hannah ever spend a night together?"
"Yes."
"And did you do drugs together?" Sonya asked.
Riley closed her eyes, remembering that night clearly. It had been before Jeff had died.
"Yes." Clay answered.
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ฅ๐๐๐๐ฌ, ๐๐๐ก you tell me how you came to meet Hannah?" Dennis questioned as she was not sitting where Clay had been.
"I met Hannah at Kat's going away party." She answered.
"And how was your friendship with Hannah?" Dennis asked.
"It was great. We hung out most days if neither of us were busy, or we'd hang out at school when I would be with her and Clay."
"And how would you describe Hannah's behavior before her death?"
"She was normal." Riley shrugged, "As normal as she could be."
"No further questions, you honor." Dennis went back to sit next to Olivia as Sonya stood up.
"Riley, did you go with your cousin to visit your grandparents the summer before Sophomore year?" Sonya questioned the blonde.
"No. I stayed here in Evergreen. My aunt and uncle were also working, so I spent most of my time hanging out with Jeff Atkins, Zach Dempsey, Montgomery De La Cruz, Scott Reed or with Hannah." Riley answered. "Until she stopped asking me to hangout. I just had assumed that she was pretty busy with work."
"Were you aware that Hannah had been seeing Zach Dempsey over the summer?" Sonya asked.
"Yeah. I knew." Riley nodded, keeping her gaze on Sonya. "I was keeping their secret and they were keeping mine."
"And what was that?" Sonya questioned.
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ ๐พ๐ผ๐'๐ believe you won't tell me who the guy is!" Hannah exclaimed as she and Riley sat on the floor of the Jensen girls bedroom. "I told you about me and Zach."
"Actually, Zach is the one who told me." Riley laughed, "Otherwise, the two of you wouldn't be hanging out."
"Wait, does that mean he knows the mystery guy?" Hannah asked in disbelief.
Riley nodded, "Yeah. He knows. Zach's my alibi and I'm his."
"Okay. Okay. At least give me a hint on who he is." Hannah says, pulling her legs up to her chest. "Or tell me how the two of you met."
"I met him through Jeff. He had just moved to town and was on the baseball team." Riley tells her, "Jeff just walked up to me my Freshman year and told me that I was going on a double date with him and his girlfriend. Went on the date with the guy and we've been together ever since."
"So he, like, he hangs out with Bryce?" Hannah raised an eyebrow.
Riley let out a loud grown, throwing herself back onto the carpeted floor. "Yes! And I know it should mean that I should probably end things, but we've been together since he moved here. But we were together before he got involved with Bryce and Monty. And he's just so cute and sweet, and gentle. And damn, does he have eyes for days."
The bedroom door opened up and Lainie looked down at the two girls sitting on the floor, "Oh, I didn't know you had company. What are you girls talking about?"
"Nothing." The two spoke together, both shaking their heads.
"Okay, well, dinner's ready. Hannah, you are more than welcome to stay and eat with us if you want." Lainie tells her with a smile.
"Oh, that's okay. I should be getting home anyway." Hannah says as she stands up, being down to help Riley stand off the ground. "But thank you for the offer."
"Anytime." Lainie looked at her niece, "Downstairs in ten."
"Okay."
As soon as the door was closed, the two girls looked at each out and laughed.
"Sooo." Hannah nudged the blonde as they stood up from them floor, "Which boy on the baseball team is it?"
Riley shook her head with a laugh as she opened the door, "Not telling you."
"Oh, that's not fair!"
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐'๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ dad." Clay tells his father as he, Riley and Matt sat on a blue wall filled with graffiti.
"For what, kiddo? For telling the truth?" Matt asked, glancing at his niece in concern since her overdose was brought up in court, along with her being in the car with Jeff.
"For not telling you....stuff." Clay says.
"You know there's nothing you could do, nothing that would stop your mother and me from loving you, from loving your cousin." Matt tells Clay, "Why is it kids don't tell their parents anything, ever? Is it shame? Or fear? It can't be fear or punishment. No one's punished for anything anymore. Are you afraid we won't understand? Either of you?"
"More like you'd understand too well." Riley mumbled, running her hand through her straight hair, which she usually had curled.
"So you're both protecting your secrets?" Matt looked between his niece and nephew that sat on either side of him.
"Or we're protecting you." Clay tells him, "Look, we have to get to school."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ก๐ฆ walked into the gym where the pep rally was being held, one cousin reluctant more than the other was at being there.
Riley scanned the crowd of baseball players until her eyes landed on those of Scott Reed, who looked at her in concern.
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐๐๐, ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐!" Jeff called out to the Male Jensen, walking up the bleachers, "Don't you have a class to get to?"
"Don't you guys?" Clay asked.
"No, man. We just won state." Jeff tells him, "They don't make us go to school anymore."
"Yeah, you wish." Clay laughed.
"There he is! There he is!" Riley raced into the gym, ignoring the looks from Scott as she ran towards her cousin and Jeff, wrapping her arms around the baseball player's neck. "Congratulations! I knew you could do it!"
Jeff laughed, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her temple, "Thank you, beautiful."
Riley grinned, "Always, handsome."
Jeff turned back to the other half of the Jensen cousin's. "I'm wondering why after such an excellent pep rally, it seems like you pep has not been rallied."
Clay chuckled, "I'm not a pep sort, I guess."
"Okay. I didn't see you sit next to Hannah." Jeff tells him, laughing as Riley wiggled her eyebrows at her cousin.
"I never sit next to Hannah." Clay tells him, "Besides, Riley sat next to Hannah."
Jeff gave the boy a look, "You always try to."
"Not lately." Clay tells him, "Remember that poem that everyone was talking about?"
"Everyone was talking about a poem?" Jeff asked, looking at Riley in confusion. "How is that possible? Who talks about poems?"
"I--anyway...I made fun of it. And I didn't know it was hers until..." Clay trailed off.
"Man, if you and Hannah's relationship were a novel, a major thing would be "mistakes"." Jeff tells him.
"Thank you."
"We'll figure this out." Jeff tells the boy.
"The last time Clay took your advice, she ran out on him at the dance." Riley told her best friend.
"No, no, no, no, that wasn't my fault, alright? If I recall correctly, it was his nerves and uptight nature that just ruined everything." Jeff tells his best friend, turning his head to look at Clay once more, "Look, you both are just too hung up on shit. We'll work on this."
"I don't have an uptight nature." Clay looked at Jeff in disbelief, before looking at his cousin with an offended look on his face for nodding her head in agreement that he did.
Jeff looked at him, causing the two boys to let out chuckles. He patted Clay on the knee before him and Riley stood up. "Hey, you know what? We're gonna have a gathering this weekend. Me, you, Hannah, Riley, my girl Leah who will be taken by Riley, and some friends. I'll text you."
"I really don't do parties." Clay tells Jeff as he goes to walk away.
"Oh, you'll do this one. See you Saturday, Jensen."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐๐๐ฌ, ๐๐๐!" Monty ran to catch up with the blonde. "Me and the team want to show you something."
"Show me what?" Riley turned to look at him.
"Just come with me." Monty grabbed her hands in his, "I'll show you."
With a sigh, she followed after the boy and went back into the gym where the guys were standing in front of a large picture frame.
Inside the frame, was Jeff's jersey pinned in with a picture of him pitching at one of the games, and the words 'in memorial' on the upper gold plate and 'Jeff Atkins, Class of 2019' on the other gold plate.
Monty wrapped his arm around her shoulder as she looked at the frame with teary eyes, her hand reaching up to play with the necklace around her neck she had back on.
"We're taking state this year. And it's for him." Scott says, looking over at his girlfriend as a tear rolled down her cheek.
"Yeah, he always had your back." Monty said, pressing his lips to Riley's head.
"Never had to wonder about that." Says Bryce.
"And he looked out for people." Zach looked at Bryce, "Always took care of his guys, no questions asked."
Scott nodded, "Yeah."
"Right."
"Come here, Lee." Zach held his arms out, letting Riley walk into them and lay her head on his chest. "It's okay."
"Fuck, I miss him." Riley sobbed.
"I know, Sweets. I know."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐๐ out of your mind? NO." Clay asked as Jeff and Riley were playing pool in the Atkins boy's basement.
"Dude, listen." Jeff walked around the pool table, "You know my body's a temple, right?"
"I don't think about your body." Clay tells him.
Riley smirked, "I do."
Jeff laughed, "Shut up, Riley. What I mean is you know how healthy I am."
He leaned against the pool table.
"You're an athlete!" Clay exclaimed.
"Yeah, and a damn good one." Riley smiled.
"But on the rare occasion, when I want a deep, lovely, night with my lady, we'll do a little love drug." Jeff says. "While Riley runs off to see the guys she's been seeing."
"Guy? What guy?" Clay spun around to look at his cousin.
"No. There's no guy." Riley denied, shaking her head.
"There's a guy." Jeff whispers loudly, dodging the pool stick the blonde threw his way.
"I read that shit can fry your brain, like, first time you try it." Clay tells him.
"Yeah, and riding your bike without a helmet can kill you." Jeff says, "But which one's gonna help you let loose and help you get past your shit with Hannah, and into each other? Hhm?"
"This is peer pressure." Clay says, then points at his cousin, "And you are encouraging it!"
"No, no. I don't wanna pressure you and neither does your cousin." Jeff said, "You put too much pressure on yourself. I mean..that's the whole point."
"Clay, you agonies over every decision." Riley says, Jeff pointing at her in agreement.
"I do not."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐๐ sure?" Clay asks Hannah as everyone is now in Jeff's basement. "I mean, we don't even know where these drugs come from, or even what drugs they are."
Hannah chuckled, "The way you say "drugs" makes you sound like a republican senator."
"I'm just saying we don't..we don't have to do this." Clay tells Hannah. "You know, we can go hangout somewhere else, or..."
"Sure. I mean, if you want to. But...aren't you curious?" Hannah asked him.
"I'm telling you, Clay." Alex walked over to them, "It's a very good idea."
"Water?" Sheri passed a water bottle to Hannah, her and Leah sitting down.
"There's the pretty lady." Riley grinned, leaning over to Kiss Lean on the cheek just to mess with Jeff.
"Hello, my future wife." Leah playfully smirked.
"Guys, what if we just ate a bunch of sugar and caffeine?" Clay asked, looking around him. "That's a certain kind of high, right?"
"Seriously, do not worry." Riley says.
"Breath." Jeff says, throwing a water bottle at Clay then passing one to Alex, "Here you go. Three first-timers and four veterans."
Leah took the bag from her boyfriend's hand, taking one out and passing it onto Riley, who wasn't a stranger, and quickly took the drug.
"We got you guys." Riley winked at her twin brother.
"This is so peer pressure." Clay says, "Like at its worst."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐จ๐, ๐ฆ๐ข tell me the truth." Peter, Alex's older brother, spoke as the cousins and Zach sat with him in the arcade for Alex's birthday. "How's he doing, guys?"
"He's good." Zach tells him.
"Yeah?"
"His balance is getting better and so is his strength." Zach says.
"But he's doing great." Riley tells the boy.
"Turns out you only need one hand to whoop your old man at skee-ball." Deputy Standall threw a stuffed animal on the table.
"Hey." Peter greeted his brother.
"Yep." Alex walked over, "You should've challenged me at Dance Dance Revolution."
"Ooh, Riley can give you a run for your money on that one." Zach laughs.
"You can dance?" Peter looked at Riley.
"She can also sing and draw, and do origami." Clay says."
"And don't forget she took tap dance lessons in fourth grade." Zach points out.
"Thank you for bringing up painful memories, dick." The blonde laughed, shoving Zach.
"It's my birthday. You're supposed to laugh at my jokes and not make fun of the beautiful blonde." Alex tells them, sitting down at the head of the table.
"Alright, wings." Alex's mom came over.
"Yeah."
"Fries, curly fries and a chili dog." Alex's mom sat down, "Burgers will come up when they're ready."
"Thanks, mom."
"And you guys got all your game cards?" His mom asked.
"Yeah. Yeah, thank you, Mrs. Standall." Zach tells her.
"Hey, Jess!" Riley waved the girl over.
"Hey, hey, hey." Deputy Standall stopped Peter from standing up, "He can go. He's good."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ it's complicated." Alex says, causing some chuckles to fill the room.
"See, the thing is to be in the group, but not about the group you know what I mean." Jeff asked, laid back against Lean, Riley texting on her phone with her legs thrown across Sheri's lap.
"No." Sheri laughed, "What do you mean?"
"Alright, take Alex." Jeff says, laughing. "You're friends with Justin Foley."
Hannah laughs, "Which is, like, whatever."
"And he says you're a good guy." Riley says, not looking up from her phone, "He doesn't say that about most people."
"He doesn't." Jeff laughs, wagging his fingers in the air. "It's 'cause he's a dick."
"I just feel like tremendous positivity for everyone right now." Hannah laughs.
"Hmm, exactly." Jeff says, kissing Leah. "In fact, I think it's time that a few of us slip off for a while. Sounds good?"
Leah laughs, "Totally."
"Wait. Wait, no. Wait, where are you..." Clay tries to ask but the couple just keeps laughing and walks up the stairs.
"Enjoy your night." Jeff laughs.
"It's already a great night." Hannah says.
"I agree." Sheri laughs as Riley stands up.
"It's like....it's like everything is what it is, but, like, more." Hannah laughs. "Like, touching....touching things."
"I know."
"Well, I will see you guys later." Riley grinned, giggles slipping past her lips, "I have someone to meet, but I will be back as soon as I can."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐๐๐ฌ, ๐ช๐๐๐ฅ๐'๐ฆ Tyler going?" Riley asked after coming back from the bathroom. "Alex told me that he invited him."
"That's why I just told them." Alex tells her.
"Alex, look, I know he visited you a lot in the hospital, but he's a fucking pervert." Jessica tells him.
"After what he did to Hannah--,"
"What he did? Seriously?" Clay asked. "At least Tyler tried to help Hannah in court. That's more than you can say, Zach. You helped turn her into Hannah the slut."
"At least we didn't do drugs." Zach said, gaze flicking to Riley. "Especially after a fucking overdose."
"Wow. Okay." Riley shook her head, already pulling her phone out and texting Scott. "Thanks for throwing that in my fucking face like every other fucking person."

"Lee, I'm sorry."
"You, guys come on." Jessica says.
"You come on." Says Clay, "You didn't help her either."
"I tried!" Jessica exclaimed.
"From what you said today in court, you hurt her more than any of us." Zach tells the boy.
"They took all of that out of context." Clay tells them.
"So you didn't let her down?" Alex asks him. "How are you different from us?"
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐ฌ and Jessica looked down at Riley's phone as it buzzed on the table.
"Why is Scott Reed texting you for?"
"He lives close to here and since I rode with Zach, he's picking me up to take me home." Riley tells her as she gathered her stuff and stood up, walking around the table to kiss the top of Alex's head, "Happy Birthday, Alex."
"Thank you."
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ฆ๐ข, ๐ช๐๐ฌ did I have to pick you up from a birthday party?" Scott asked as soon s she was inside of his car.
"Because Zach is a dick and I wanted to go home." She kicked her shoes off and brought her feet into the seat to rest her chin on top of her knees. "They started fighting about who's father everything with Hannah it is, then brought up the night in Jeff's basement, then Zach brought up my overdose."
"Let's get you home." Scott sighed, intertwining his fingers with her and bringing their hands up to his mouth so that he could kiss the back of her hand.
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐๐๐๐ฟ the cinnamon rolls?" Alex asked as the group of seven sat in Monet's each one coming off of their high from the drugs they had taken the night before.
"I think I did." Riley mumbled from her place with her head in Jeff's lap.
"If I put that in my mouth, I will literally puke." Alex tells her.
"Are we like, all in bad moods?" Hannah asked.
"I am." Sheri answered. "I just don't have the energy to care."
"I just wanna sleep." Riley whined, Jeff shushing her like a horse's owner would do.
"No. We're just coming down." Jeff says.
"It's normal." Riley yawned.
"What's the point, right?" Hannah asked.
"Yeah, exactly." Sighed Alex.
"No, but, like, really, what's the point of anything?" Hannah asked them.
Jeff shook his head, "That's just the molly talking."
"Her name's Hannah." Alex tells him.
Jeff sighed, "You gotta handle the lows if you wanna chase the highs. Come on, drink some water. Don't let your mind go to that dark place."
"Do you ever think, 'I can't do it anymore'? Like, 'I wanna die'?"
"Yep." Alex started to stretch, "Every single minute."
"Been there, done that, didn't work." Riley mumbled.
"Hey, don't talk like that." Jeff frowned, looking down at her.
"Like everything's black?" Hannah looked at Clay.
"Guys, get through this. Okay? Get through this moment and it'll all be clear." Jeff says. "And Riley, stop drooling on my pants."
"Sorry." She mumbled, sitting up in her chair and laying her forehead on the table instead.
๏ฝก๏พโขโเญจโกเญงโโข ๏ฝก๏พ
"๐ช๐๐๐ง ๐๐ฅ๐ you doing?" Riley asked her cousin, being brought out of her sleep once more as she walked across the hall and into Clay's bedroom.
"Doing what needs to be done." Clay mumbled, letting the tapes go out onto the internet.
