Exams were finally over. The next day, Adena only ate and rested for her first free day. On Friday, she couldn't do that sadly. Eugenia and she had been invited to Slughorn's last dinner. As for now, the two of them as well as with their group of friends were just out in the sun, enjoying the weather. Adena was staying under a tree, preferring that over the strong rays of sun. Like most of the girls, she was just wearing her skirt and shirt, but it was unbelievably hot. The shadows of the tree weren't enough, and she felt annoyed. In moments like that she wished she didn't have such a mass of hair. Even though she had tied it in a high ponytail, she couldn't get rid of it.
"Eugenia," whined the brunette "Can't we go prepare ourselves now?" she then asked hopefully.
"Uh? Isaac what time is it please?"
"Almost five," replied the boy looking at his watch. He was lying in the grass, and just staying a few hours out in the sun was enough for his skin to turn into a beautiful brown color. Adena would rather not try the same, already knowing how red her face might end up.
"It's early... but considering we arrived late twice before, I think it's better if we go now..." finally said Eugenia.
The young girl instantly got on her feet.
"Oh, Adena, your cheeks are all red!" laughed Jacob, pointing at her. Adena placed her hands on her warm cheeks as she frowned at him.
"It's too hot that's why!" grunted the girl before turning around and leaving the group, Eugenia saying goodbye before following behind her.
"He's annoying I know," said the redhead girl with a sigh as she reached her side.
"Why does he have to make fun of us,"ย muttered the brunette with a small pout.
They walked inside the castle. The freshness of the place was enjoyable. After a few minutes, they spotted a rare group of people walking in the corridors. When getting closer they noticed it was some Slytherins. Adena especially noticed Regulus.
The girls slowly passed by them. Both Regulus and Adena did not say anything but looked intently into each other's eyes. The brunette had no idea what happened, but the Slytherin male had looked at her with such intensity. He had even turned his head slightly to take one last look at her, which she returned.
"What with that look he gave you!" exclaimed Eugenia with shock but enthusiasm after they were far enough.
"What? I don't know what you're talking about."
"I bet it's because you look hot today. All eyes were on you when we left the park," she said as she nudged her.
"Eh? No. I'm normal."
"If you say so hmm," chuckled Eugenia.
Adena completely denied what she had witnessed, but she couldn't stop thinking about that strange encounter with Regulus Black.
"Good evening sir," said Eugenia as her companion smiled at the teacher.
"Miss Hawlins! Miss Winsten! What a great pleasure to see you! Come on take a seat!" said the teacher with enthusiasm.
Adena made her way towards where Regulus was sitting next to Evan Rosier, with Severus Snape by his side. She sat at Regulus' left side, Eugenia sitting next to her.
"Good evening Black," murmured the brunette, loud enough for him to hear.
"Good evening Winsten," replied the boy, in the same hushed tone.
And they both had the ghost of a smile on their faces just by the small interaction. Other students started coming in. Both Ravenclaws offered a smile at Lily Evans when she took a seat in front of them.
When all students were there, Slughorn started rambling about whatever subject pleased him as per usual.
"Can anyone tell me their projects for the summer break?" asked curiously the teacher as they were eating their meal. "Nobody? Miss Winsten, do you have any projects for the holidays?"
Adena froze on her seat and slowly lifted up her head from her plate. "Sleeping," was her short reply, totally disinterested which make a few students chuckle. Even Regulus by her side did.
"Sounds fun. What about you Miss Hawlins?"
"Me? I have no idea. Probably getting Adena out of her house at least one day," said jokingly the redhead girl which earned a glare from the side and another round of chuckles.
"That's very nice of you. And what about you Mr Stilwell?"
"Why did you have to mock me," muttered Adena in a slightly upset voice.
"C'mon it was a joke," whispered Eugenia, trying hard not to laugh.
"It was funny,"ย murmured a male voice at her other side and she turned around to face Regulus, glaring at him.
"It wasn't, you git."
"Why are you insulting me, I'm not the one who made the joke."
"Hush, Black, I'm trying to listen please," said hauntingly the girl in a scolding manner as she turned towards the teacher. And the boy chuckled quietly again.
After a while, the dessert arrived, meaning that the end was approaching.
"Oh, it's a Battenberg cake!" exclaimed happily Slughorn.
Adena looked at it with envy. It had to be her favorite dessert.
"Oh, girl, you're lucky," whispered Eugenia, knowing her comrade adored cakes especially this one. Adena quickly took a bite of it, savoring the sweet taste.
"Hmm, it's so good," told her the brunette in return. And she dived into her cake again, finishing it rather quickly.
Regulus had noticed that and was watching her with his eyes slightly widened. The girl's cheeks were a little puffed because she was still eating.
"You really enjoyed that cake hm."
She finished munching on it before swallowing it to reply, "It's my favorite..."
"That makes sense then." And he got back to his own plate, smiling a little.
When dinner ended, Regulus and Adena went for their last patrol of the year. The girl felt weird. Maybe it was sadness occupying her, she wasn't sure, and she kept thinking about this, leaving only silence between them as they walked through the different hallways of the big castle. It had become a habit, and she only realized now it would probably not happen again. No night strolls in the empty corridors by the side of Regulus Black. She definitely felt sad.
"Why are you so quiet tonight?" just asked plainly the Slytherin.
"It's our last patrolling together," was all she said.
"I know."
"I enjoyed our time together," suddenly murmured Adena, as if feeling nostalgic about all their nights together and all the conversations they had.
"Me too."
"Thank you for keeping me company..."
"Thank you for accepting it..."
And he walked closer to her, not hesitating to grab her hand, the action feeling foreign but his touch always being familiar.
Adena felt sad in the morning. She probably was the only one feeling sad. She was feeling gloomy just thinking about coming home, knowing she would barely see her parents during the two months, as well as her sister who would be hanging out with her friends. She appreciated her alone time, but she couldn't help feeling lonely sometimes. The brunette would also miss her Ravenclaw fellows. For some reasons they got closer that year. Adena didn't know how nor why but it happened. She had got used to their presence in her life and couldn't imagine how lonely she would feel all by herself for the next weeks. Something the young girl wasn't sure of, was that she might miss Regulus as well. After all the two of them had somehow managed to build something alike to a friendship. They weren't friends, but they were close to each other. She felt like he thought the same, but she couldn't be sure of course.
That morning Adena wasn't hungry. She stayed in bed while the others got down for breakfast. She was already regretting not following the girls to enjoy their remaining hours together, along with the three boys.
When feeling ready she put on her uniform before starting to pack her stuff. This time she had to pack every single thing. Every book, every object, every cloth, even the family picture from ten years ago sitting on her bedside table. How gloomy she was feeling.
"Hey there, you got up," said Jade as she entered the room. They had finished breakfast and it was time for them as well to pack their stuff.
"It's so annoying to pack up again. I want holidays but I'll miss Hogwarts so bad," whined the redhead girl.
"We'll write to each other and meet often to remember school even during holidays," laughed Millie.
"Right, let's do that."
"Why are you complaining, it's only eight weeks anyway."
"It's too long for me."
"Girls, I finished. I'll go down see if the boys are there."
"They are always late to pack, so you'll find them down for sure."
It was no surprise to discover Isaac, Noah and Jacob chatting and laughing together on one of the sofas. Adena sat down next to Isaac.
"Hello Adena. Oh, are you okay?"
She didn't hide her melancholic mood well enough and Isaac had noticed. The brunette shrugged with a small smile. She glanced down to her hands as she could sense three pairs of eyes on her.
"I guess I'm just sad to leave."
Isaac nudged her little. "It's okay, we'll see each other soon anyway."
"Isaac, I think you don't understand," interrupted Jacob, "She's sad 'cause she'll miss me."
"Actually, I'm sad, 'cause I'll miss Isaac and Noah."
"Nah, I don't trust you."
"I hope you don't yeah idiot."
The girls got down after that.
"We're done, let's go outside guys," said Jade.
And the little group of Ravenclaws headed outside, strolling in the park.
"My little Noah isn't it your birthday next week?" said Jacob as he put his arm around Noah's shoulders who blushed a little.
"Yeah it is, thanks for remembering."
"Babe, we've been knowing each other for six years, of course I do. And it's also little Adena's birthday in some weeks, my little babies are growing up so fast," said Jacob in a faked emotional voice as he put his second arm around Adena's shoulders, dragging her way too close for her liking.
"Chill out old man you're only two months older than me. And Noah was literally born two weeks after you."
"Yeah yeah, whatever," said the blonde boy, guiding his comrades towards the carriages, Isaac, Millie, Eugenia and Jade following behind.
Once at the station, many people were already there, waiting for the train to open its doors. Adena was feeling more anxious as they got closer. Not far away from there, she could see Candace and Maylyn crying in each other's arms even though the girl would be at her place in some days and she chuckled a little at the sight.
Jacob still hadn't let go of the two and he had become quiet. Then he stopped and the four others came to face them.
"Damn it's the end again," said Isaac with a sigh.
"I don't want to leave you," muttered Millie pouting a little.
"Group hug!" exclaimed Jacob his bubbly side returning.
They all laughed and suddenly Adena was engulfed in a hug from both sides by Jacob and Jade. She returned it in a light manner even though their hold was so strong, and she felt sadder, almost wanting to cry. She even could hear some sniffling coming from Millie.
"We should go find a compartment," finally said Jade and everyone agreed.
They headed inside, quickly finding a compartment, and their holidays were officially starting.
