chapter twenty

When they hopped in the train, both Noah and Adena leaved them to make their way to the prefects' carriage. The brunette girl instantly spotted Regulus sitting with Ivanna at the back of the large compartment. She approached them, Regulus noticing her but especially her happy smile right away. She sat in front of him, Noah at her side, then just said.

"My sister and I had a talk, well she rather asked for forgiveness and I said 'okay'. I should have listened to you."

Regulus shrugged but smiled slightly. "Well, told ya."

Before they could keep chatting, the Head boy and Head girl entered the compartment and started giving instructions on the patrolling sessions during the train ride. They gave every pair their time of patrol, telling them they could use the compartment they wanted after finishing. Then it hit Adena. She wouldn't be patrolling with Regulus today. The girl faced him again and he was already looking back at her, as if expecting her reaction.

"We won't..."

"Yeah, not today."

"I'm that much of a bad partner, Adena?" suddenly said Noah with a pout. She turned her body towards him, with a reassuring smile on her face.

"No of course dummy, I just got used to Black during patrolling."

He gave her a small smile while answering, "Don't worry, I was joking."

Just as he said that Adena noticed someone staring at them from behind him. She cocked her head just a little, meeting Lily Evans' green eyes. She was a prefect as well and Remus Lupin was sitting at her side. She offered them a small greeting smile.

The fifth years were the first to patrol, starting with the Hufflepuff pair, then the Ravenclaw one, and the Gryffindor one, finishing with the Slytherin pair. Around every hour, a pair was relaying, and soon enough, Adena and Noah's turn would come. While waiting, they had a small talk with Ivanna and Regulus but after some time they had to go.

Adena's eyes met Regulus' as the Head boy called their names. She got up after Noah, following him to the Head boy as the Slytherin boy still had his grey orbs stuck on her silhouette. When the Head boy and the Head girl finished talking to them, they directed themselves to the door. Just before closing the door, Adena's hazel eyes met Regulus' stormy gaze; her lips mouthed a small 'bye' and she then left, leaving Regulus' eyes fixing the door.

Ivanna nudged him with a snicker, saying, "She left you know." But the boy stayed quiet at her words, just lost in his thoughts.

Both Noah and Adena patrolled for an hour in the corridors of the train while chatting. When time was up for them, they joined their fellow Ravenclaws in their compartment.

"Here they are. It was starting to get boring without you. These guys aren't funny," said Jacob as they entered the compartment. They say next to the two boys and then, they continued talking for the rest of the rid. They took the time to eat many sweets and snacks when the old woman passed by their compartment with her trolley. Adena bought cauldron cakes and chocolate frogs with her remaining noses. And the ride was quite enjoyable.

The Hogwarts Express arrived at King's Cross Station at around 6pm. The excited students left the train after it stopped, suitcase in hand. There were many parents but Candace and Adena knew their parents weren't there. After a while they spotted a small creature, waiting, unmoving near a wall at the back of the mob. Pimchin, their house elf was there to welcome them and bring them back home.

"Hello, Pimchin!" said Candace as Adena smiled at the small creature.

"Oh, Miss Candace, Miss Adena! Pimchin is very happy to see you again," squeaked the elf.

Pimchin held out her tiny hands so both girls could Apparate with her to their house. The Winsten family lived in a small mansion in the South of England, more precisely in the village of Bibury. They were the only wizard family living there. It was a quiet place that Adena enjoyed very much. In just one second, the girls found themselves in the entrance hall of their house. It was pretty large with sky blue walls as well as many paintings and photos decorating them. A staircase was facing them, the living-room was on their left and the dining-room on their right. The kitchen was at the back.

Adena wasn't surprised to see the house empty, with nobody to welcome them, her parents were probably still working. It would give her enough time to unpack before going down to eat the dinner that Pimchin was going to prepare. After the elf got both suitcases on the first floor, Adena started unpacking. She was glad to be home, she had always liked this place, especially her room. It wasn't too big nor too small, just enough for her. It was painted in the same blue as downstairs and a window was facing her bed. It made it enjoyable in summer, but for now, the days looked somehow dark and sad because of the winter weather. After a while, the brunette heard some noises coming from downstairs. Her parents had probably come home. Just as she thought that, Pimchin appeared in front of her.

"Dinner's ready Miss Adena. Master Marshall and Mistress Juliet just arrived from the Ministry."

"Thank you Pimchin, I'll go meet them."

The girl left her room as the elf directed herself to her sister's room, next to hers. She got down the stairs just to see her mother removing her winter cape. She turned around with a smile on her face. Adena offered her a smile as well, a smaller one though, before her mother embraced her in a quick hug.

"Welcome back Adena, I missed you very much."

"Me too, Mum."

She smiled at her again before directing herself towards her sister that was coming behind her, offering the same greeting.

"Oh my, Candace, you grew some inches again?"

This remark made Candace laugh as she shrugged. It struck Adena once again how similar they looked. Both were standing at around 5'6" while Adena was stuck with her 5'2". They also had the same golden locks except that their mother kept them in a low bun. Their smiles were pretty much the same as well, only their eyes had different colors though, bright blue for her mother and emerald green for her sister, just like their father. They could be easily misunderstood for twins as her mother didn't look like she was about to turn thirty-eight. She was good at using potions that could mask her real age, making her look barely thirty. While they continued interact, their father came into the hall, coming from his office upstairs, and getting down to meet them. Marshall Winsten was a tall man, with the same brown locks as Adena, except a shade darker. He directed himself towards his family with a small smile, hugging Candace then coming to Adena to quickly embrace her as well.

"How are you girls? Happy to be off school I bet."

"Yes, finally some rest. You can't imagine how exhausting is sixth-year."

"Let me remind you that there was a time where I was going to school as well."

Candace rolled her eyes as she answered, "Yeah thirty years ago. You mustn't remember a thing."

Their father chuckled as the family directed itself towards the dining room where food had just been served.

"What about you, Adena? You're a prefect, right?" said her father. He knew Adena wasn't the type to talk much so he has always reached out for her to speak.

"It's going well, just more work. And prefect duties have been going well too."

"Who's the other prefect?" asked the man as he started eating.

"Noah Lee. Maybe I talked about him before."

"I thought it was that Penley guy?" interrupted Candace.

The brunette stared up at her from across the table as she hissed slightly, "You know well that stupid Penley quitted."

"And do you like that Noah, dear?"

"Yes, he's kind, just a bit shy."

"Are you dating?" replied her mother, sounding a bit excited.

Adena raised a brow at that stupid question. "No, we aren't. I can like guys without dating them. I'm not interested in dating as I said before."

Her father and sister both laughed as her mother sighed, "Girls your age are supposed to be interested in boys."

"My studies are more important than a childish love story. No boy is interesting enough anyway."

"Too bad you aren't dating your little friends, Isaac and Jacob were their names, right? They are clever boys, and that Jacob is funny," she said, referencing to that time the two boys visited her last July.

Adena just stayed quiet, not pleased by this conversation. She had been telling her mother that she didn't care about dating since her third year. It seemed like it was one of the only things about Adena that interested her. Suddenly she heard her father chuckle slightly as his wife asked the same thing to Candace. He was looking at her and she smiled a bit. He knew very well how his wife was.

"Aren't you dating that Sirius Black? I know you like him a lot."

Candace laughed at that. "Sirius? Really? He's good looking for sure  but we're only friends, Mum."

Their mother has always been obsessed with dating. Like any mother she wanted her daughters to marry a good man who had a good situation. But harassing Adena and Candace at such a young age was more annoying than anything. Especially for the youngest. Adena being independent and more the reserved type had claimed many times she had no interest in dating. She had never fallen in love; she didn't even know what love was and she was fine that way. Why would she bother herself with someone when all she could think was that she didn't need anyone. Her mother would never try to understand.

author's note: i uh don't know how house-elves address their masters. i mean it sounded weird to use the word mistress for young girls the house-elf had been knowing since they were small so i thought miss would do
