chapter seventy nine
Saturday came and Adena woke up early so she could attend Regulus' practice session. The boy seemed really delighted to see her at the Ravenclaw table when he came into the Great Hall and he even went to sit beside her, not caring about what his teammates especially his Captain could say. They were lucky barely anyone was there yet.
"You're actually coming," he said with a smile as he placed a kiss on her temple while she was munching her toast.
"Of course, I told you," she answered with a grin as she read the Daily Prophet, but her grin quickly faded away.
"What are you reading?"
He bent over her shoulder, reading the same article as her. It was about the reported missing of yet another Ministry's worker. They both knew who was behind this and Regulus tensed up a little. Normally he wouldn't care but seeing Adena witnessing such acts from who he could call his partners, just made him feel uneasy. She gently took a hold of his wrist – the one with the Dark Mark – and she started rubbing it, as if sensing his tension. Her caring gestures meant 'I'm here with you. No matter what, I'm here.'
"Eat something, practice will start soon, and you shouldn't go out on the pitch with an empty stomach."
He nodded and she let his arm go so he could eat something. She continued reading in silence after that.
When practice was about to start, they left the hall and walked hand in hand until reaching the pitch and leaving each other's side. Adena noticed the weather had become chillier in this mid-October. She was lucky enough Regulus brought his scarf with him so it could keep her a little warm in the bleachers. She loved this scarf since it had the same scent as him, something so familiar and comforting that always made her smile.
When practice started the young Ravenclaw already felt bored. It wasn't the most entertaining thing to watch, especially since Regulus was mostly out of her view. But she liked the idea of being there for him. Soon the Captain called for a break and the girl could hear the groans of complain from up there. Zabini started shouting at them and shouted even louder when Regulus got down by their side. She could see why the boy said that Zabini was a pain, his behavior was unbearable even though she wasn't part of the team. Being fed up with the way he was talking to his teammates, especially her boyfriend at the moment, Adena didn't hesitate one second before pointing her wand at the boy, saying 'Silencio'. He continued yelling but suddenly no sound was heard anymore. Regulus looked up at her with a surprised expression as well as a satisfied grin on his face. The others turned to her as well and they all started laughing except Zabini who was giving her a death glare, with his lips continuing to move without any sound getting out but the girl didn't feel the slightest bit intimidated.
She eventually put an end to the charm and Zabini started talking again to Regulus specifically, but she couldn't hear. She only saw his reaction which was quite shocking.
"What a slag. You should teach your girl a lesson or two Black. And put a leash around her neck so she can know her place," spat the boy harshly.
Regulus who was usually the type to keep his calm completely snapped at these words. He quickly drew out his wand that was hiding in his Quidditch robe pocket and pointed it to Zabini's neck.
"One more word and I swear this is the last time you see light. You're the one who should know your place. You better shut up before my girl, like you said, makes you shut that filthy mouth of yours."
The brunette couldn't see well from afar but Regulus' eyes had a dark color, looking murderous, and added to his calm but threatening voice, Zabini just nodded his head. She was really confused by the exchange.
After another hour, the practice session of the day finally ended. Adena got down to meet Regulus who was unsurprisingly the first out. She noticed his cold expression; his stare had a glint of rage and he wouldn't meet hers.
"Hey, are you okay? What happened with Zabini?" she asked softly as she took a hold of his hand while they were walking back to the castle. The warm touch of her hand instantly eased some tension in him.
"I'm fine, nothing happened don't worry."
He would always tell her not to worry but that only worried her more. And so she simply hummed and tightened her hold on his hand. They left each other in the castle, Adena telling him she would come to his dorms after lunch and he only nodded.
Once she was back to her common room, she noticed some weird stares coming from her housemates, and her friends called her out.
"Nice scarf Adena," said teasingly Eugenia.
"You want me blind with that disgusting color? Why you always fraternize with the enemy!" screamed Jacob dramatically.
Their words made her look down, realizing she still had Regulus' scarf around her neck, she shrugged and joined them, removing her outdoor clothes.
"At least, it keeps me warm," she replied nonchalantly.
"I can also warm you up," smirked Jacob while nudging her. Jade in front of them faked gagging and Adena just looked exasperated. "More seriously, I'd rather not have any problems with Black."
Adena, laughed at his behavior, the others following as well.
"Idiot. He isn't even that scary..." said the girl with a small grin.
"What? Are you serious? Every time y'all are together he's stuck to your side and he looks like he won't let anyone close. I used to have suspicions about him but he's just..."
"Whipped," concluded Jade and Jacob agreed.
"What are you talking about? He's normal, he has always looked like that," muttered the girl.
"Oh no, he likes you and it shows hmm," said Millie.
"You always sit together in the train, even when you weren't dating, and I could see his hand discreetly grabbing yours under the table," chuckled Noah.
"Oh, that's interesting. Adena you won't ever tell us crusty details, but I want to know about these cute things!" exclaimed Eugenia.
"That's nothing special... that's just us, I guess people dating do that stuff."
"The only guy I dated was a complete jerk so..." said Jade.
"Honestly, I thought Black would be a complete jerk too, but when you two got close and started dating I realized he might not be. They've been some... rumors about him but look at how whipped he's for our little Adena, it's already forgotten," added the blonde boy.
The brunette knew what rumors he was referring to. She had heard about those to which concerned not only Regulus but also most of the older Slytherins. And those rumors have been proven to be true, that was why she preferred not to talk about this.
"At least, I'm happy if you appreciate him more. I'm really grateful," said Adena sincerely.
"Oh, Jacob, you should prank him!" exclaimed Eugenia suddenly.
"Uh?" the brunette turned towards her with wide eyes.
"Yeah! I'll act flirty while you two are together, it'll be funny!"
"I don't think that's a good idea..."
"It is totally! It'll be funny you'll see. It also means we warm up to him."
"I hope he won't get mad though."
"That's the goal!" laughed Eugenia. "Just a little teasing."
The girl sighed, knowing she couldn't make them change their mind.
They eventually came down for lunch and obviously Adena had completely forgotten about their prank. They ate normally, nobody mentioning this. The brunette looked up to Regulus from time to time, so she could know when he was ready to leave. The girl finished eating at the same time as her friends and they left the Hall together as well. Regulus quickly made his way towards them, but Jacob had already started his mischief. Showing off a bright smirk, he threw one of his arms around Adena's shoulders.
"You know Adena, even if there weren't any gravity on earth, I would still fall for you..."
She stared at him like he had gone mad while the girls laughed.
"Is it hot in here or is it just you?"
She scrunched up her nose in disgust. She was confused but at the same time it sounded too much like Jacob.
"Oh, your lips look so lonely...Would they like to meet mine?"
"Fucking gross..." she muttered as Jacob's wide smirk got close to her.
"Adena," said familiar voice behind them and it sounded rather stern. The girl turned around, Jacob still attached to her.
"Hey, you're here."
"What are you doing?" he asked narrowing his eyes, but looking only at Jacob. The blonde boy tried to keep his calm but had a hard time doing so.
"We're having some fun."
"Adena, is it fun?" asked Regulus.
"No, he's gross and annoying," she grunted, while trying to push her clingy friend away.
Once she was done, she joined her boyfriend's side, and he wrapped his arm around her waist while glaring at Jacob.
"Just what we expected, right Eugenia?"
The girl was laughing behind them but agreed.
"Jacob is this one of your stupid..." but the girl didn't continue and instead sighed.
He started laughing and nudged Regulus while saying "I won't steal your girl, don't worry mate. I don't have a death wish."
"Black, you reacted like we wanted," said Jade.
"Like what?" asked the boy.
"All possessive because your girl is in someone else's arms," replied Eugenia.
"I am not jealous. Especially not of that git."
"But you didn't look very happy," said teasingly the blonde boy and both Adena and Regulus sighed.
"We don't have time for your stupid game Jacob, so bye," said the brunette as she turned around, leading her boyfriend away.
"Thanks for the experience, you did well!" yelled Jacob.
