kate rose may
age: 17
kate stared dully at her cell's ceiling. she grew bored once again, they withdrew her access to basic things like books or anything that could provide the slightest bit of interest to her.
"block thirty-eight b, subject thirteen, state your identification number."
"zero, four, seven, two, five."
"kate may?"
"yes sir." she spoke seriously, making eye contact with the guard through her small door window.
"you're getting transferred today." he said preparing to open the door.
"right now?" she asked frantically. usually she'd get transferred with a two or three days notice, but this was completely random.
"step back!" the guard ordered as she did so. now standing by her bed.
"arms out, don't talk." he barked at her as he gave her a pat down.
he muttered a short 'damn.' as she shuddered away from him.
"aye do your job." another guard spoke as the first guard cuffed kate's hands rather tightly pushing her out the doorframe.
kate never had a childhood to begin with. as a small child she was sold to government by her parents for money. she was 'raised' in a simulation home. which was like a real life dollhouse. where everyone was faking everything, she had pretend parents and even a pretend cat. all of which were actually government officials. when she was was eight they knew that her abilities had more capabilities and the facility transferred her to another place in texas.
this life was all she's known. cell to cell, lab to lab. she grew up thinking that there was nothing outside of a building.
kate was very very smart, especially for her young age. she learned a lot of information from her care takers but never experienced it. she never saw moon, or a forest, or even a rabbit which was her favorite animal. she wanted to see everything, even if she'll never admit it. she wondered if the world she read in books or learned was truly real, or was it really a fantasy.
she blurred out most of the four hour bus ride aside from seeing the dark haired boy with the sunken eyes. she couldn't describe the feeling she felt when she first saw him but it gave her a slight rumble in her stomach. maybe it was because her stood up for himself, or maybe it was because he was the first kid (let alone a boy) she's ever seen in her life. whatever it was about him, he seemed to fascinate her.
'number ten.' kate hummed to herself as she thought about their first encounter and how the solider referred to her as number ten's 'girlfriend'.
'what does that mean?' she questioned as she looked for something so that she could write the new word down.
in her new room, she walked around finally taking in everything. she was beyond bored out of her mind, the colors painted on the walls were as dull of a grey as her sweatshirt and sweatpants.
"may i have a book please?" she asked one of the guards, to which the ignored her request.
"excuse me may i—" she spoke.
"heard you the first time sunshine." he said coldly, ignoring her again.
"asshole." she said muttering under her breath. surprisingly that was a word she learned when she was around ten or eleven, after she heard a guard refer to his boss as such.
"heard that!" he said as she walked from the door.
she laid back in bed, staring up at the ceiling. she never felt so bored in her life.
'maybe i can talk to number ten.' she thought but she realized how odd that would be. then the weird rumbles came back as the image of him popped up in her mind. 'yeah never mind.'
"agh!" she grumbled in annoyance, turning to her side.
she knocked over the sheet in the process and when she went to retrieve it. when she got on the ground reaching for the end of the sheet, she noticed a small chill under the dark blue tile.
'a draft?' she thought as she pulled up the light piece of tile, it took a while before kate got it up revealing a hole. without a second thought she reached her hand into the whole feeling an rectangle object.
she picked it up examining the exterior, it was a journal. it was small black journal with a small button latch. you could tell it was obviously written in it since the page were a bit crumbled. kate felt like she shouldn't have, but out of her curiosity she opened the book.
'if your reading this, your probably locked in this hell hole like i was. if you haven't figured it out yourself, your ability if something that people would kill for. no one in the world really knows of your secret except for those who want to exploit you. everyone you think can help you can use you for their own benefit. don't trust dr. miller or anyone associated with her. they're willing to kill you, or keep you as lab rat. i'm writing this to help gifted people like me, the outside world is real and it's our birthright to see it. i want to help you escape, do everything i say, without hesitation and you'll get out. i know it's hard to trust me or anyone right now but whatever you do don't lose this notebook, guard it with your life.

"oi sunshine! you've been awfully quiet." the guard said as he started unlocking the door to her room. "you better not be dying of boredom in here."
kate scrambled, tucking the book in its hiding spot, and sitting on the bed as if her recent discovery was non existent.
"here's your book sunshine." the man who's tag read 'ray' spoke, leaving the book on the ground. 'alice's adventures in wonderland'.
"thank you ray." she smiled politely as she waited for him to close the door. once he did, she let out a sigh of relief. 'that was close.'
she pulled out subject one's journal again, re-reading the same paragraph. she had so many questions like, who are they, were they really able to escape, and where are they now? the more kate's mind wondered, the more questions and doubts kept stirring in her mind but this journal gave her something she's never known before, hope.
'i can see the outside world. i can finally be free from this.' kate thinks to herself. 'but what if it's a trap?' she questions
'i think this a risk i'm willing to take.'
