Chapter 3: The Truth
"I did not think it was that fun," Seokjin's face reflected his feelings about the game.
"Is it because your mission had something to do with height?" Taehyung made a snarky comment and everybody started laughing.
"No. Shut up. I admit that I am not a fan of heights but like we wanted to do something adventurous and this game... it's not really that interesting or adventurous. Write a poem? Take a photo? These are so boring. My mission must have been the most dangerous and adventurous one." He rolled his eyes. He wasn't wrong and everyone knew that. This was their last summer break and this might even be the last time they get to spend so much time. They all have different dreams and idea of a good life. They might get along very well but their personalities did not collide. And soon their lives would be different too.
"Not being dangerous is not a bad thing you know. We can't put our lives in danger just because this is our last summer break." Jaeyi was one of the few logical ones in the group. She is often referred to as the group's mother. She is the main reason these people are still alive and healthy.
"Okay. Not dangerous but what about fun? Not every fun thing is dangerous and this game is boring." Jungkook and Jimin nodded their head agreeing to Seokjin's rant.
"I have an idea." Yoongi chimed in. Everyone looked at him attentively.
"Why don't we go camping and complete all the missions there?"
"Camping? How does that make it adventurous? I thought you were more brave than that." Jimin mocked.
Yoongi stared at him, grinding his teeth, "Will you fucking let me complete? My family has a house near the lake in that part of the forest where there have been too many animal attacks lately. We used to go there every winter when it was safer. It will be dangerous but we will also be safe inside the house."
Everyone stayed quiet, giving this idea some thoughts.
"I love it." Seokjin was the first one to give his feedback. Following him every started agreeing to this idea.
"So when and how do we go there?" Ah Reum asked.
"We can meet here tomorrow morning and rent a big car. Everyone except Namjoon can take turns driving." Yoongi said.
"Wait a minute...everyone got their driving licence except me?" Namjoon whined.
Everyone laughed and had a lot of fun before having dinner.
"So finally the game will be a little fun right?" Ah Reum looked at Jungkook knowing that he loves anything that gives him an adrenaline rush.
"Yeah. I had been looking forward to playing this game but after the first round, I had started questioning that. I am hoping that the missions get more interesting. Can't wait to do something more daring." Ah Reum could see that Jungkook was texting someone.
"I also want to do something dangerous." Jungkook snorted and looked up.
"You? You are a baby. You have never done anything fun or rebellious in your life and you suddenly want to do something dangerous." Ah Reum was hurt but she couldn't show it. She knew what everyone thought of her. She had missed all their trips because parents wouldn't let her go outside the city. She could never stay out after 8, literally when all the youth of the city get out of their homes. She never snuck out, never talked to a guy except the ones in her group, never did anything that would disappoint her parents but they were never proud of her.
"You are right but I am too old to play by the rules now. I didn't even tell my parents about the camping trip." That was partially a lie. Her parents were out of town so she doesn't have to inform them.
"Wow. That's brave." Sarcasm laced his words and it was hurting Ah Reum. After all how can anyone tolerate being made fun of by their crush.
Ah Reum looked out of her window. It was unusually gloomy. It had rained all night and that made her question whether camping would be safe but she couldn't share her thoughts with the others. They would not be surprised if she cancelled the trip last minute. It wouldn't be the first time.
She was tired of the image they all had of her. She was nothing like that. She wanted to have fun, live her life but her parents made it very hard for her. They understood her to a certain extent but they don't get why she couldn't stand up for herself.
She quickly got ready discarding any fear that she had and called Jungkook to confirm the meeting location.
"Hello?"
"Jungkook we are meeting at the same place we had gathered yesterday right?" Her question met with silence. It was a while before Jungkook answered.
"You are coming?" He sounded surprised but Ah Reum was prepared for it. She knew everyone thought that she wouldn't be there. They probably left without her, she thought.
Before she could answer him, he said, "Yes. The same place."
"Okay. Thanks. See you soon."
"See you."
She cut the call and looked at her in the mirror. She knew she had to prove them wrong.
She was finally there. She was wearing a very casual outfit and was carrying only one bag. She wanted to seem tough but was disappointed when almost everyone had more than one bag.
"Finally. Let's not waste anymore time and get in the car. It may not be very comfortable considering we are way too many people but it's a short journey." Suho got inside the car and took the driver seat. Everyone started getting in without saying much. Most were hardly awake.
"How do some of you look so fresh? I just want to go back and fall asleep." Taehyung said resting his head on the seat in front of him.
"Some of us are used to going to sleep early and waking up early to study." Namjoon replied.
"Nerds." Jungkook and Taehyung comment in unison.
I am also very sleepy." Ah Reum added in, fake yawning. Everyone looked at her. She was clearly one of the people who were used to waking up early but today she was trying extra hard to fit in.
The drive soon became quiet. Some fell asleep, some were listening to music and some were lost in the scenery outside. It was a 3 hour drive. The roads grew quieter as they kept getting closer to the location.
"You okay?" Namjoon looked at Ah Reum with concern. He could tell that she wasn't herself today.
If someone in the group really understood Ah Reum, it would be Namjoon. He always defended her, studied with her and sometimes even stayed back to keep her company while the others had fun.
"It's stupid." Ah Reum dismissed him. She did not want to seem silly. There was a high chance that she was overthinking. Maybe they did get her, maybe the occasional jokes were nothing more than jokes.
"Ah Reum you know that we are your friends. If there's anything that bothers you, just come talk to us"
"So that you all can make fun of me?" Ah Reum snapped. She did not know what was wrong with her. Even if she felt left out, she never really had the guts to speak out about it but today nothing could stop her.
Namjoon sighed, "If you think that you know that we talk behind your back, you should also know that there are some people here who will always have your back. They will defend you no matter what."
She knew he was right. If there are people who would make fun of her, there are also others who would stand up for her.
"I am sorry. I just had a conversation about this with Jungkook yesterday and I guess that's still bothering me."
"You know how he is but he doesn't mean anything. If he bothers you, you just need to have an honest conversation with him and he would never do anything to hurt you ever again."
"I know. Next time he says something, I will tell him honestly how that makes me feel."
"Good. Now let's listen to some good music and relax. We are going there to have fun, let's leave behind all our stress and problems." He passed her one earphone and played their playlist.
She finally felt at ease so she closed her eyes and went to sleep.
She was woken up by Namjoon calling her name. She sat up and saw that some had started unloading the bags. She gave Namjoon a lazy smile and got out of the car.
"Woah." Taehyung exclaimed stepping out of the car right after Ah Reum.
"This place is huge."
Yoongi shrugged, "I wouldn't have suggested this if this place wasn't big enough for 12 of us."
"Not just 12 people, this place could easily fit 20 people."
"This is just the exterior. You guys are yet to see the inside." Yoongi said going inside followed by all the people who had already collected their luggage.
"Jungkook!" Jaeyi called out as she saw Jungkook just standing outside quietly.
He looked at her and she gestured to him to come inside.
"Give me a moment." Jungkook kept his bag and went to Ah Reum.
"Can I talk to you?" Jungkook murmured.
Ah Reum looked at Namjoon and he gave her a nod while picking up her bag and leaving them alone.
"Sure. What's up?" She tried to be as casual as possible. She did not want to let him know how her heart flipped every time he talked to her.
"So...umm...I am really sorry."
"Sorry? For what?"
"For the way I talked to you yesterday. I realised that was mean."
Ah Reum chuckled, "You hardly said anything. I know that you were not being mean."
"Ah Reum we both know how it went down yesterday. You don't need to be nice to me. I know that your parents make it hard for you to do anything but that's not your fault. I am glad you joined us today."
She knew that he was being sincere. He wasn't a bad person, he was just about other people's feelings sometimes especially her.
"It's okay Jungkook. I am fine. You don't have to fee-"
"Jaeyi? What are you doing? Come in." Kyunghi yelled out catching Ah Reum's and Jungkook's attention.
Jaeyi stood at the entrance staring at them. When they turned to look at her, she got flustered and quickly muttered sorry, going inside.
Jungkook looked at Ah Reum one more time before following Jaeyi inside.
Ah Reum stood there, taking in the talk that just happened. She was glad that she could clear that up with him but something was still bothering her. She did not know what.
"So finally?" Seokjin said looking at the box that settled on the table in front of them.
"Yup. We can skip the ones that are campus related." Taehyung said shuffling the deck.
"Okay I will pick first." Yoona chimed and picked up the card on the top. Everyone is staring at her, anticipating a reaction which may give away the mission. But nothing except confusion laced her face.
"What is this? Why is it blank?"
Suho huffed, "It's just a blank card. Every card game has one or two." He picked up the next card and kept it aside. Picked up another card and tossed it away. Frustrated he threw the whole deck , turning all the cards upside down. To everyone's surprise, they were all blank.
"What the fuck is this?" Yoongi was annoyed.
"We played with this deck yesterday and it was fine. Whoever is trying to play a prank, you won. Now let's play the game." Everyone stayed silent waiting for the culprit to come clean but not a word was spoken.
"Suho?"
"What?" He said, clearly hurt because of the accusation.
"You took the card with yourself yesterday. Who else should we look at first?"
"I seriously don't know what is happening with the cards. I took it home, kept it on the table and brought it here in the same condition." Suddenly everyone's phones start buzzing. Hundreds of notifications flowing in. The buzzing was so loud and frequent that it felt like the ears would start bleeding.
"What is happening?" Jungkook was the first one to pick up his phone and check it.
"My phone's screen isn't switching on but the noise is not stopping."
"Same." They all said together and suddenly it all stopped. The noise had finally stopped but the screens had still not started working.
"What-" Before Taehyung could say much, the screens lit up and a danger sigh appeared.
"Are our phones hacked? Is it the Wi-Fi or something?" Jaeyi questioned. Before Yoongi could defend his Wi-Fi, a voice came from the phone.
"Hello players. Welcome to the universe of The Imposter. This game is designed for people looking for a pump of adrenaline. It is a fun game but it could be even more fun when rules are followed and some important information is remembered. First, you are being watched. Yes you heard that right. Nothing in your life is a coincidence once you touch this game. Everything that has happened to you since you were introduced to this game was planned by us. Second, do not try to leave the area under supervision. The area under supervision is usually an area of 20 metre radius. It's not a lot so be careful. Even mistakes have consequences here. Third, I will explain how to play this game. Until now the imposter might not have been an important part of your game but from now on the imposter is important. We will be selecting an imposter. The imposter has a simple job: to kill. This game goes on for 11 days. That's an odd number but the number of days is decided on how many players are there apart from the imposter. If the imposter manages to kill all the players, the imposter wins a huge prize but if they get caught, then they will be punished. To make the game more interesting, we also have missions. Everyone including the imposter will get missions to complete. If at least 5 people successfully complete their missions one each day and the players manage to identify the imposter, they win. It might seem like the imposter is at a huge advantage so to make it fair, the imposter has only one hour each day to kill. Any kills outside that time frame will not be added to the number of kills. When that hour happens, the players will be notified with a head start of 15 minutes. Use that head start to hide but remember not to go too far. As for the missions, they can be given at any time with a deadline. Finish the missions within the deadline or you will be disqualified even if you are the imposter. That's all. From now on we will be communicating through the phone and watching on you through cameras. Have fun!" As the voice faded away, the silence in the room became louder. Was their phone hacked? Is this a joke? All kinds of questions fill their minds.
"Why didn't you tell us about the camera?" Suho finally broke the loud silence. He looked betrayed. Fear visible on his face.
"I did not know about it." Yoongi yelled feeling accused.
"This is a place in the middle of the forest. It might be here for safety reasons." Suho was angry. He didn't want to die in the middle of a forest. No one wanted to but he was the only one who could speak up. He got up from his place and launched himself at Yoongi. He held the collar of his hoodie and picked him up from his seat.
"Safety? These safety measures are the reason this weird thing just happened." Yoongi was confused as well but he was amongst the more practical ones in the group. Fear wasn't a solution. It would only make things worse.
"Do you seriously believe anything that voice just said? It could be a sick prank. Try to think about it. Everything about whatever that voice just said sounds silly. We are being watched inside this place but what about the 20 metre thing? How will they supervise that? That doesn't seem weird to you? Also even if they choose the imposter why would someone amongst us kill us? And if not killing us, might get the imposter killed, who will kill the imposter? One of us, right? But would we do it?" What he said made perfect sense to Suho and everybody else. How can any of this be real? This has to be a sick prank right? But they will only get to know that once the game starts.
