ON A VERY HOT, SUNNY DAY, A BLACK RAVEN WATCHED AS A PRIEST'S WIFE WAILED IN PAIN GIVING BIRTH TO THE SUN ITSELF. malachi titus thorne. the raven became a dark shadow in the sunny baby boy's life, seemingly curious at first but ultimately a sign of deadly curses. the animal with tainted mortals would have been more of a problem, or even noticed more than it was, had malachi not been the savior of his small town in tennessee. an angel, they claimed in a chorus, excited that their prayers had been answered. their angel could somehow predict events before they happened, whether awful or great news and therefore, the very ground he walked on was worshipped.

WHAT THEY WEREN'T AWARE OF WAS THE AFFAIR MALACHI'S BIRTH MOTHER HAD WITH THE ROMAN GOD APOLLO. it would have explained why the boy was so easily compared to the sun, why he basked in a golden glow while tears the same color slid down his cheeks during every prophecy, but it was their secret. it was how malachi survived as long as he had, being treated like he was someone worthy of divinity. it was too bad they didn't realize until it was too late that malachi thorne was no angel, and if he were, he would have been the angel of death.

MALACHI SOON FINDS LUPA, WHO WAS ALWAYS THEIR NEXT PLAN. tears leaving clean tracks on his soot-covered cheeks, his clothing singed while reeking of ash, and covered in burned rashes that may never heal in the years to come, a spear was placed in his hands with a few words. get up. your battle hasn't even started yet, soldier. so malachi did.

MALACHI IS NO ANGEL. he's not even sure he's a great roman soldier. what he does know, however, without a doubt, is that he's been burning from the inside out ever since his first prophetic vision. and it was only a matter of time before he blew up and took the world with him.
