the other side
a short what-if scenario

ARTEMIS shifts away from the other boy, his moves hesitant. his friend's hand outstretched in front of him, those hazel eyes that used to sparkle with childlike wonder- he couldn't see it anymore. he couldn't see eva anymore. all he saw behind those hollow brown eyes was a desperate spark of hope, someone who was barely clinging onto the remnants of his sanity. lips pressed, just slightly twitching impatiently, eva was awaiting an answer. yes or no - would he take his hand, accept his offer and stand by his side, or would he leave him just like everyone else in his life? it was this hunger, this eagerness that gleamed in eva's eyes that shook artemis to the core. eva needed someone, someone to be with him. someone for him to trust. he desperately clung onto the memories of them talking with each other, exploring the world side-by-side - would he accompany him through this journey? would he join him? they were friends, right? friends don't leave each other. no, they were so much more than friends - they were family now. arty was like the little brother he never had. surely, surely he'd understand, right? dxmn it, why was he taking so long to decide? the brunette couldn't help but feel his teeth clashing against each other, itching to get an answer. no - he couldn't be impatient. what if arty left him because of that? the idea of such a scene almost made him cackle. arty surely wouldn't leave him. of course not. Right?

arty didn't know what to do. was this the eva he shared his lunches with underneath the willow tree just a week ago? was this the eva that suggested the notion of a goldfish breaking its bones doing cartwheels in the water? everything about him screamed danger. danger danger danger. don't come near - the thoughts pouring out of his head was deafening, deafening to the point that the blonde boy had to shut his eyes, flooded with the husky voices that gnawed in eva's head. there was so much, so much that was going on. he couldn't comprehend, he couldn't understand - the words and phrases just kept jumbling up into one yarn ball of never ending chaos, but all the loose ends tied together concocted a singular question: will he leave me? and arty couldn't help the guilt that weighed upon his shoulders when he saw eva motion him to take his hand, his cool composure melting away like the ice cream they'd bought on that one summer day. his eyes. . . one look at then and arty knew; he knew he couldn't. with that, the blonde outstretched his hand, and for a moment, eva could feel his heart fluttering, hot breath hitching.

he pulled away.
