chapter fifty-three
mysterio's last plot twist

THE PLANE was for once quiet. Instead of the hectic chaos that had been the journey to Italy, the way home to America was spent in an exhausted, but relieved silence. The young teenagers of Midtown School of Science and Technology were dozing off to music in their ears, trying to read their books and watch their movies━wanting more than anything to finally see their family again and to sleep in their own bed under their own roof. Their trip far from home had been something terrifying (and yet in a way, very memorable), but now ... now it was time for it to finally end. Amongst the quiet whispers, the silent naps and a snore here and there, sat a Spider-Man Plush. Hugged close in the centre aisle a few rows down, it was happy to go home, too. It supported some burns here and there that would need to be washed out and maybe some new clothes. On his head, someone had placed a Spider-Man band-aid to cover a slight rip to keep in his stuffing. And now, the toy was enjoying a well-deserved rest, hugged to the chest of Peter Parker, Spider-Man himself.

He was doing a very good job of staying remarkably still in order to not disturb the girl who was comfortable resting her head on his shoulder━fast asleep. Nina Hart seemed, for once, quite peaceful in her slumber. It was a sight to behold that she was resting utterly oblivious to all that transpired somewhere else, sighing in a breath of content without true understanding on the slight weight of sadness in her chest. She was unbeknownst to the way Peter relaxed in the silence, feeling not an ounce of danger. No creak of the chair, no uneven breath ... nothing that sent him on edge ... Spider-Man felt safe, and so did Nina Hart on their flight home. She slumped towards him a little more without realising, hugging his arm tighter when his head fell gently to rest on top of her own. For the first time, Nina Hart was void of dreams━nightmares or otherwise about things she was unsettled and questioning ... for once, she was at peace, and maybe she deserved it.

Peter Parker lazily scrolled through his phone, looking at old photos. He hovered at the recent few he had taken of the two of them while Nina was asleep━pictures that weren't perfect, but he wanted to print off and stick up on his wall anyway ... maybe one he might even frame. He smiled at the sight of the broken necklace sitting on the collar of her tee-shirt, and knew that it had been worth every action figure he pawned to get to this moment right now.

He smiled to himself. For the first time, too, Peter Parker realised that he had everything he wanted in his life right now━sitting with Nina Hart, he felt calm ... he always felt normal

Nina shifted in her position. Peter lifted his head just as she did, glancing down as she peered up at him through tired, hooded eyes that fluttered━not entirely awake just yet. "Hey," he mouthed to her, not wanting to break this gentle silence.

She gave him a small, sweet smile. Peter then shuffled down further in the seat so he could rest his head on her shoulder and Nina's smile brightened for a moment. He huffed out a sigh and closed his eyes, and relaxed the moment her head joined his━and the two teenagers spent the rest of the flight together, comfortable and content in this peaceful happiness that they were sure wouldn't last for much longer. But they were determined to live it for as long as they possibly could.

They slept all the way until they had to put their seatbelts back on to land. Nina took a deep breath, happy to finally be back home. She missed New York, she missed her crazy life, and she missed her parents, her brother━her family.

It was sluggish movement as they all slowly travelled off the plane. Nina was happy when they all met up together again━she, Peter, Ned, MJ ... and Felicia. Nina smiled at her old friend who looked different without her suit. She looked ... she looked like the Felicia she always knew in her off-the-shoulder shirt and high waisted jeans. Dead-straight hair hung around her face, and the Black Cat smiled back.

She offered an open packet of sour worms for Nina to take one. Nina's smile brightened and fished her hand in to grab a few. MJ took some without even asking, but there was a blush to her ears. When she could move seats, she had sat next to Felicia almost the entire flight home.

They had no bags to collect━they were all blown up. And so the group of teens made their way through and out of the terminal in a close-knit huddle. Nina smiled to herself when Peter took her hand and linked their fingers together. She squeezed his palm, shyly glancing at him.

Nina saw the glasses hanging off the collar of his graphic tee and she smirked, swiftly picking them up with her free hand. She slipped them onto her nose. They did not activate, for they were only programmed for Peter's retinal scan, but she grinned at him anyway. "They're cool," she told him.

Peter chuckled and snatched them back. "They're big on you," he teased and slipped them back onto his shirt.

"Maybe they'll shrink to fit you," admitted MJ.

"You'll grow into them," corrected Felicia.

Peter glanced at them each in turn. He was almost surprised by Felicia's compliment. His brows furrowed, and then he managed a small smile, "Thanks."

Felicia shrugged. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips, too.

"Are you thinking of coming back?" Nina asked her friend carefully. "I mean ... back to school?"

Cia pursed her lips. Then, she sighed, "Things have changed. A lot has changed." Nina nodded. She hung her head, admittedly a little disappointed. Felicia then nudged her arm. "But, hey," she smiled, "I have a new phone so ... whenever you need me ... call, text━I'll be there."

"So ... if I need someone for a hot chocolate movie night...?"

Felicia grinned, "I wouldn't miss it for the world."

     Nina beamed.

They walked along for a little while until they made it to the front of the airport. There, a whole group of families were waiting with happy smiles and welcome back! signs. Their classmates broke away and ran straight for them and Nina chuckled, light-hearted to see so many reunions.

Another thought hit Peter as they slowly came to a stop. He turned to Nina, squeezing her hand. "Hey, you wanna hang out tomorrow?"

Her heart fluttered and she immediately grinned, nodding. "Yeah," said Nina happily. She blushed and nodded again, meeting his giddy smile, too. "Yeah. I'd like that."

"I'll━uh━" Peter rocked on his feet, glancing around before dropping his voice into a whisper to say, "━swing by at like ... twelve?"

Nina's grin broadened. "I'll keep my window open."

"Ew," muttered MJ. "You guys are so cheesy."

Peter stared at her, slightly exasperated. Then, he decided to let it go and said something else that was starting to bother him. He pursed his lips. "Are ... are you sure no one else has figured it out?"

"Sure," Michelle offered. "It's not like anybody really pays any attention to you."

He went back to his exasperated look. "Seriously?"

Nina quickly mumbled in support, "I pay attention to you."

Peter turned to her. He blinked, then smiled. "Aww. Thanks, that's cute."

MJ rolled her eyes, "Ugh. I'm done with you two already."

She marched off past them towards where her mother was waiting. They watched her go. Nina awkwardly raised a hand to wave, "Uh ... goodbye? See you soon?"

Felicia pursed her lips, a little anxious standing here with no one to go home to. She scratched at her cheek and took a deep breath, "Well! I suppose I'll just ... go ... somewhere."

Nina watched her carefully for a moment. She was swinging her and Peter's arm absent-mindedly as she thought. Then, she found herself deciding. "I haven't shown you my brother yet, have I?"

Cia's eyes widened. She stared at Nina, shocked. "You have a brother?"

"Younger brother," she shrugged with a little smile. "His name's Ian. He's cute. I think he'll like you. That's if ... that's if━" she started to grow anxious, herself, "━if you wanna stay over for dinner tonight. Only if you want to and have nowhere to go, I mean━"

"Yeah," Felicia cut her off almost immediately. She nodded, breath hitched. "Yes. Yes, I'll come."

Nina's heart warmed. Things were brittle━she and Felicia had a long way to go to rebuild all that they had lost in their friendship. But ... if her and Peter were anything to go off, Nina supposed that there was always room for second chances to create a bond far stronger than it had ever been before. Nina used to be sure on a lot of things, and after the Blip, she lost a lot of that━everybody lost that. But that was something she knew she could be sure of.

"Great," she decided, very happy. "Let's go find my parents, then━they'll be happy to see you."

     Felicia smiled.

Nina turned to Peter once again. They shared a deep breath together and it came out in a few nervous chuckles. Nina let go of his hand, "I guess I'll ... I'll see you tomorrow, Tiger?"

He flushed pink. He nodded, "Yeah. Tomorrow. Twelve. I won't be late."

     Nina blushed, too. "Good."

     Peter grinned. "Good."

She shuffled her feet and quickly leaned in to peck him on the lips before she'd lose the courage. "Talk to you later," she said to him.

"Bye," Peter said sweetly as she left him. Nina gestured for Felicia to follow and he wanted her run to find her parents who were near the back of the crowd.

The first person she hugged were not her parents though. Instead, she held out her arms and squealed loudly to catch her younger brother's attention. He matched her excitement and ran straight to her, and Nina swooped him up into her arms and spun him around━he laughed, and Peter smiled brightly, happy for her.

"You guys are so cute," came another voice as the last of their small group finally made their way over.

Peter glanced back and he grinned to see Ned and Betty stop in front of him. He blushed to think that he and Nina were cute. "Thanks." Then, an idea hit him. "Uh━actually ..." he glanced briefly back at where his girlfriend introduced Felicia to her parents again, "... I was thinking we should all━I don't know ... like ... go on a double date or something."

Ned and Betty's faces dropped. They shared an equal grimace with each other and Peter frowned, confused. At the same time, they let out, "Oh ... we broke up."

Peter blinked. He stared, incredulous at how they held hands, "N━No ..." he tried to sound disappointed. "What? What?" He crossed his arms (he definitely did not see this coming ... sarcasm). "Why?"

Ned sighed. He gave him a wise smile. "Men and women grow apart," he said. Betty slowly nodded, agreeing, "but the journey they share together will always be a part of them."

His ex-girlfriend gave him a loving look. She cupped his cheek and Peter made a face, very━very━confused. "You are so wise," she told Ned.

    He nodded, "Thank you."

Betty tapped his cheek fondly once more before letting go. She then left with a whimsical sigh. Ned watched her go with a doting smile.

After a small while, Peter whistled lowly, "Okay..."

Ned met his gaze. He shrugged, "It's love, dude."

"But you guys just broke up."

"I will always love her━" Ned placed a hand on his heart. Then, slowly, he placed it then on Peter's chest. "One day, you will understand. With Nina."

Peter's frown deepened. "Uh ... yeah, I don't plan on breaking up with her any time soon."

Ned just tapped his chest, all knowing.

     "You're weird, dude."

"My Lola says my special intuition is magic, so I'd be careful what you call weird."

Peter hitched his breath, and was at loss of words all except: "Dude━"

     Ned shrugged yet again.

    "That's so cool."

    "It's in the family."

"Can you do magic like Doctor Strange?"

"I don't know ... maybe I should like try to levitate my lego set?"

     "That would be so cool..."

     "Dude━!"

     "Dude...!"

And the two best friends walked the rest of the way together, just like they started it all━laughing and discussing all the things they could do to try and experiment the possibility of magic in Ned's family (and laughing at how the more ridiculous each suggestion became).

Everything was finally back to normal.

*ೃ༄

"I KEPT MY identity pretty guarded this past couple years. I faced a lot of deception. And I'm tired of the lies. So, it's time for the truth to be out there..."

Peter had his best interrogation eye on the two sitting on the couch in front of him. He shifted his glance onto each in turn, arms crossed and his suit-on━Spider-Man was not in the mood for games for he will finally get the truth out of these two thugs. The truth they had been trying to keep from him all Summer.

He narrowed his eyes onto Aunt May and Happy. "Are you dating?"

They shared a hitched breath. An exchanged glance. A purse of their lips. They quivered under his interrogation and had no choice but to admit the truth:

    "Yes━"

    "━Not really."

That was not the answer Peter expected. And it seemed like it wasn't the one either May or Happy were expecting either. They stopped and spun to each other, surprised.

     Happy looked horrified, "What?"

May went to say something. She back-tracked. She brushed some of her hair off her face and tried to think of the best possible way to explain, "Well━"

    "━I think━"

    "━Summer fling, Happy..."

Peter watched the two of them with a dreadful feeling as if he had just opened a can of worms that really weren't prepared to be open. He stammered, all of the sudden regretting sitting down to have this conversation in the first place.

"Yes," Happy was saying to his Aunt May, "that evolves and grows like any other━"

Aunt May shrugged at her nephew, "━I still don't know where it's going to go━"

"━Open to wherever it might lead━"

    "━Anywhere━"

   "━To share it with people━"

"━On or off. We'll always be friends, no matter what."

Peter could feel embarrassment crawl up his throat. This was not how he planned this conversation to go. Spider-Man was not a couple therapist ... at least, he doesn't think ...? "I━I'm gonna go━" he snatched his mask off the table, wanting to get out of here as soon as possible, "━because I've got a date..." they weren't listening. They hadn't stopped their ongoing separate explanations on what was happening between them, and Peter really didn't want to be here when they realised they had two completely different mindsets on this relationship. "Uh ..." Peter grinned awkwardly. "Bye━"

Aunt May and Happy were still rambling as Peter tugged his mask on and leapt out his open window. He jumped up onto the railing of the fire escape and launched off━Spider-Man cheered a delightful cry as he somersaulted down into the streets below. The streets of his favourite neighbourhood━his home.

His web attached to a nearby building and he exclaimed, thrilled as he tucked his legs up and swooped low nearby people walking the streets and back up again.

"YEAH!" one of them cried. "IT'S SPIDER-MAN!"

The fresh afternoon sun beamed down through the apartment complexes and shops of Queens. He swung through them all, cheerful as he made the trip to an apartment he knew all too well. He ran across buildings and spun around over-hanging lampposts. He cheered as he darted through the narrow scaffolds of water tanks on top of buildings and did tricks for his fans that had stopped to watch him dive past.

They complimented his new suit and an old man shook his walking stick angrily after him. Just the average day, and he loved it.

Spider-Man swiped his phone into his hand as he leapt off into an arc from another web. Quickly, he replied to Nina's message that asked how much longer he'd be.

ON MY WbBY NOW! 🥰 He sent.

He swooped over the roofs of cars slowed in heavy traffic and twisted to avoid a wayward pigeon. He switched apps and held his phone up high with a laugh as he managed to take a great picture for Spider-Man's instagram mid-swing over a speeding train.

A notification from Nina ❤️❤️❤️ dropped down onto his screen as he took a sharp right. Don't text and swing! It said. He opened up his messages and tried to think of something to reply with━

Spider-Man glanced up and let out a strangled cry as he narrowly missed slamming head-first into a fire escape. He jumped off the side and somersaulted over it, quickly webbing his phone back to his hand before it hit the ground. That was close, but he won't tell her that.

"I really need to add Karen back into this suit," he muttered to himself as he took the next turn. "That way, she can text for me."

When he saw that Nina was trying to call him instead, he grinned behind his mask and answered as he passed an apartment window and shot a peace sign at a family having lunch. "You're Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Cop."

"Seriously?" she laughed on the other end. "I thought crime fighting was a young spider's game."

Keeping the gruff voice as he ran up the side of her apartment building to get to the opposite end, Spider-Man said: "Spider-Cop says he's retired, but he can never give the mantle up. He will always be Spider-Cop, forever and ever and━" he coughed and she giggled.

"Don't text and swing!" she then reminded him.

"I wasn't!" lied Spider-Man. "Anyway, just around the corner, babe."

He landed on the roof and ran across it. He jumped off the other end and turned mid-air. He bounced off the fire escape all the way down until he saw her open window and swung forward. He landed onto the fire escape just as Nina Hart turned around. She ended the phone call and grinned at him from the end of her bed.

Spider-Man poked his head through the window and grinned, "Hello there Nina Hart. Ready to be swept off your feet?"

Nina Hart rolled her eyes and chucked her phone into her purse and zipped it up. "You're a dork even with that mask on, Tiger."

His lenses narrowed slightly, acting confused as she made her way to her window. "But I'm serious, I am sweeping you off your feet. How else are we gonna swing around?"

She grinned. She shoved him lightly so he'd step aside and she climbed out of her window. She closed it behind her, looking really cute in jeans and a pastel orange long-sleeve tee. She had a band-aid already showing in the rip of her jeans just from skating this morning. Her sneakers had Spider-Man doodles on them with red pen.

Spider-Man cracked a grin under his mask, "My biggest fan━" he teased her and Nina rolled her eyes, blushing.

"All right," she pulled him towards her by his arm, excited. "Where are we gonna go?"

"You're gonna love it," Peter showed her a thumbs-up. "I'll be the best spider-boyfriend ever. So, you ready?"

Nina grinned and accepted the arm he held out to wrap around her waist. She wrapped her own around his neck, then hesitated. "Wait━" she gave him a sweet, pointed look. "You gotta promise me no tricks."

Spider-Man shook his head, "No tricks, I promise."

She arched a brow. "See, you promised that last time and━"

"I promise for real, this time!" he laughed and pulled her closer. He crossed two fingers against her waist that she didn't see. "Come on, we'll be late."

Nina eyed him for one second longer before deciding to believe him. She hugged him close and Spider-Man stepped onto the edge of her fire escape. Clinging on extra tight, Nina prepared herself for the drop her stomach will make when they leapt off.

Peter then turned himself backwards and decided to just fall off.

Nina squealed into his ear and he laughed. He attached a web seconds from where they'd hit the ground and she clawed onto him, wrapping her legs tight around his waist and hiding her head into his shoulder. "PETER!" she scolded as they swooped back up high. He only laughed even more.

She screamed when they dropped back down at high-speed, taking the turn sharp towards Brooklyn and then to the bridge so they could cross to the main island. Her hair flew into her face and she shook her head, crying out screams of: "NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! I'm just not gonna watch━I'm not gonna look because you promised━" she peaked an eye open, "━OH MY GOD THERE'S A TRUCK━!"

They dipped in between the truck and the car driving beside it. She screamed yet again, purposefully very loudly just because she knew Peter was very much enjoying this. Nina pressed her forehead against the cheek of his mask, eyes clenched and holding on for her very life as Spider-Man took her on her own high-speed chase through Queens and into Brooklyn.

"SLOW!" she begged as her stomach lurched at sudden spin. "SLOW! SLOW! NO━!" He tucked her head in as he somersaulted and couldn't stop cackling when her scream turned strangled as she cried out: "WHAT DID I EVER DO TO YOU━?!"

Nina usually loved swinging with Peter. She really did. But those times were when he took her on slow swings through New York. Not when he sped through dangerously like he normally would on a daily basis! And she knew the very reason he did it was just to play with her.

"I'm gonna stop looking!" she was still saying as they zipped back and forth over the Brooklyn Bridge. "I'm gonna stop looking━" she glanced over his shoulder and regretted it instantly as the bridge blurred around her, "━Why did I do that━?!" she squealed as they dived straight into Manhattan, smacking Peter when he cheered.

"You're okay!" Spider-Man chuckled as they turned left. "It's fine━!"

"Don't talk to me!" she snapped. "I'm concentrating on not throwing up!"

"Hey, get ready, get ready, get ready━"

The both of them swooped in a spiral upwards over City Hall. They arched over the very top and Peter let go, holding onto Nina just by her wrist━

She has never screamed louder in her life.

*ೃ༄

WHEN THEY FINALLY landed, Nina still did not let go. Even as Spider-Man's feet landed on the side walk, she just held on tighter, locking her legs and arms and not moving her head away from his shoulder. Her hair was a birds nest over his face. Peter's arm dropped and he stood there for a moment, waiting for her to do something. He heard her heavy breaths and was fighting a chuckle.

     "You okay?" Spider-Man asked her.

"No," Nina answered shortly and hugged him tighter.

He did chuckle this time. "You ... you can let go, now."

     "No."

Peter pushed her hair off his face. "Come on, it was fun!"

Nina shook her head and gave him a quick violent squeeze that for him, felt more like a teddy bear trying to suffocate him━harmless and very cute. "That was not fun! That was scary!"

"I wasn't gonna let you fall," he chuckled a promise. Peter then said, "Will you forgive me if I buy you a hot chocolate?"

He felt Nina freeze in his arm. She considered his proposition with a purse of her lips. Then she finally let go, stepping down with slight wobbly legs onto the sidewalk. She huffed and flicked her hair off her face, grumbling out a, "Fine━But━" she held up a finger under his lenses, "━we are walking there, okay?" Spider-Man nodded. "Walking. Walking━" she held it there a second longer before dropping her arm.

"I can't believe you did that," she was still grumbling as she fixed her hair, shirt and double checked she still had her purse, "again."

Peter just grinned behind the mark, resting a hand on her shoulder and squeezing it. He glanced upwards to the afternoon sky and around the square━the news was being played on the large monitors, covering the ongoing relief for the residents of Westview that were still receiving grants from the Stark Foundation for earlier this year. Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, was leading the relief. Some people saw Spider-Man standing on the side walk and pointed, whispering to themselves and taking pictures. Peter quickly stepped closer to Nina to make sure they didn't manage to grab a picture of her. He flattened some of her hair.

She was checking her phone for a brief moment. Peter didn't see the way her face dropped as she saw something on Instagram. "Uh ... Pete...?" she whispered━her voice was filled with dread.

Before he could check to see what she had seen, too busy frowning at the growing crowd━more and more were taking out their cameras━the news on the monitors suddenly jumped to them all. Peter's lenses narrowed into a frown.

"We interrupt this broadcast with some breaking news," the monitors all flashed the same thing━the announcers voice echoing in Peter's ears from every angle. Forgetting Nina's horrified look on her face, he leapt up onto the lamppost, continuing to frown as he read the Breaking News Headline, realising it was about the attack in London. "We come to you with revelations about last week's attack in London. An anonymous source provided this video. It shows Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio, moments before his death."

Spider-Man was on edge━he could feel it on the his arms and on the back of his neck. Something wasn't right. He glanced back down at Nina who stared up at him, the grip she had around her phone trembling. Peter was growing worried. All around them, people had started to stop━each and every one of them turned to gaze at the Breaking News. "A warning, you may find this video disturbing."

Peter felt bile when he saw Mysterio's face stare back at him on multiple screens. He was back on the Tower Bridge━it seemed moments before Peter had shot him ... or at the same time. He did not know. He was frantically speaking to the camera, "I managed to send the Elemental back through the dimensional rift but I don't think I'm gonna make it off this bridge alive. Spider-Man attacked me for some reason. He has an army of weaponised drones, Stark technology."

Peter sat back on the lamppost, his heart beginning to pound as he listened to Mysterio's lies right in front of him━surrounded by hundreds of people below. His breath hitched. He quickly glanced down at Nina who was amongst the crowd. He started to become very aware of how many people were around her.

"He's saying he's the only one who's gonna be the new Iron Man, no one else." The video shifted. Glitchy and bad quality, it showed the bottom half of Peter's suit standing over Mysterio's body. He heard E.D.I.T.H.'s voice: "Are you sure you want to commence the drone attack? There will be significant casualties."

Peter's stomach began to drop. That didn't happen. He never heard her say any of that.

And then next━his voice━was even worse: "Do it!" he cried. "Execute them all."

Peter shook his head, not sure what was happening as gunshots rained in the distance from the footage━footage he knew for certain never happened.  There were screams, there were explosions━he had no clue what was happening. Below, people were starting to murmured. They had pulled out their phones to record what was going on.

The video ended and the presenter returned. He pursed his lips, looking very sombre and grave. "This shocking video was released earlier today on the controversial news website TheDailyBugle.net."

Spider-Man slumped in frightened fury when he saw the infamous J. Jonah Jameson take the stage from his web show news station. A man who had never liked him as a superhero━who never had a good word to say. On his web show, in the Daily Bugle newspaper magazine or on his frustrating podcast: The Facts with J. Jonah Jameson. "There you have it, folks," he said and Peter would often wonder whether he had to speak so loud and gruff to get his words past his bushy moustache, "conclusive proof that Spider-Man was responsible for the brutal murder of Mysterio, an inter dimensional warrior who gave his life to protect our planet and who will no doubt go down in history as the greatest superhero of all time!"

"What?" breathed Spider-Man, so shocked he could not say anything else━he could not do anything except sit there and stare as his whole word started to fall apart at the seams.

"But that's not all, folks. Here's the real blockbuster. Brace yourselves, you might wanna sit down for this one."

A new video played back on the screen. Peter narrowed his eyes at Mysterio who turned to the camera, holding it with shaky hands. "Spider-Man's realSpider-Man's real name is━" The video cut out to black. Peter held his breath, his shoulders started to become tense. Everyone held their breath in the streets.

It glitched back into view. Mysterio leaned in close to his camera: "Spider-Man's name is

     "Peter Parker!"

Peter's hands flew to his head. "What the FU━?!"
