( thirty-one )

The helpless girl, Mel's, cries for help didn't go unnoticed to Harley or Sterling. She kept herself knelt down, peering over the edge while grasping rocks as to be careful she didn't slide down and either die or end up in the same position. She was so focused on helping the poor girl that she didn't care to overhear Bellamy and Finn's quiet arguing from not too far. All Harley could assume was that they would stay, and do the right thing before finishing the mission they were on to rescue their friends.

"Hey, Mel!" Harley exclaimed from the top. Her voice was gentle, calm, as she attempted to keep her composed. If she flailed around too much, she'd fall to her death. "Sterling is getting rope right now, okay? We're going to help you. You'll be just fine." Harley made a promise, hoping it was one she could keep.

"I can't!" Mel cried out. "Please!"

Harley looked over her shoulder, seeing Sterling striding over with a rope tied around his waist, a long line that ended being tied to a tree stump. She shifted over, allowing him room, before hearing Bellamy call out another demand. "We're moving out!"

Shocked, Harley scooted back before pulling herself to her feet. "Bellamy, no!" She exclaimed wretchedly. She couldn't believe he's made a choice so quickly, to leave a vulnerable girl that needed their help. It shouldn't take long, Harley thought as she stared at their leader with desperate, teary blue eyes.

Bellamy looked apologetic and guilty, but the expression was soon dropped as him and Finn realized Sterling was already sliding down the edge, clutching the rope. "Wait! Sterling!" Finn shouted out, rushing to the edge himself, but was too late. Sterling was already carefully making his way down, whether Bellamy had liked it or not.

Hopeful, Harley peered over the edge again. Sterling was being as careful as possible making his way to Mel, and she breathed a quiet sigh of relief. Once this was done, they'd find the rest of them and bring them all home and the ones they couldn't save would be sent to their home as well.

"Well," Murphy spoke up, his tone making Bellamy grow irritated. "It looks like we're taking that break after all, huh?" He can call it that, Harley thought to herself. But to her it was more than a quick rest. While they couldn't have done anything to save her friends back in the raging war, she had confidence that they could at least save this one girl.

"I'm almost there!" Sterling called up after a minute. Harley could see from where she was knelt that he was closer to Mel, and she clasped her hands together, grateful. "Once I have her, pull us up!"

"I'd say he's heard one too many of your motivational speeches," Murphy commented, informing Bellamy with a slight mocking grin.

Sighing, Bellamy kept his eyes on Sterling and Mel. "Shut up, Murphy."

Clover voiced her own opinion, just as annoyed as Bellamy. "I don't think he does." Murphy scowled at that, but Harley didn't pay them any attention as of now.

Ignoring them, Harley watched as Sterling made his way closer to Mel. What nobody noticed was the way the thin rope wavered a bit from the weight of the boy. She could see him reaching his hand, assuring her that it was okay and to grab his hand. Suddenly, the rock that kept Mel upwards gave way as Sterling put his own foot on it. Harley gasped in surprise, wincing, but saw that they were both okay for the moment.

"I got you, okay?!" Sterling's statement was much louder, frightened from nearly falling. "Give me your hand!" He reached out, his hand brushing Mel's and clasping it in his own.

All of a sudden, there was some type of whipping sound. Before Harley could process what it was, she saw the rope that was tied to the stump flying by their feet at the same time she heard Sterling scream. Horrified, she tipped forward, desperately hoping she could grab it. "No!" Harley shouted, her voice broken, as she nearly slipped down the edge.

"Harley!" At the sound of her name, Harley felt Clover's fingers gripping her arm and yanking her back before she fell too. In despair, she hadn't even processed that she almost tumbled forward as well, instead letting tears stream down her cheeks as she witnessed Sterling fall to his death, hitting the bottom.

Letting out a soft cry, Harley's head fell forward and her eyes squeezed shut. "Come on," Clover urged her softly, gently tugging her arm and helping her rise to her feet. Harley opened her eyes again, rubbing the tears away with the back of her hand. This wasn't fair. Sterling was trying to help Mel, and do the right thing.

"Mel, hold on!" Bellamy demanded, leaning forward cautiously. "Focus on me. You can do this," he encouraged her, which only made her protest. "You can. You're strong!"

"I'm not strong!" Mel cried back. "Stubborn, maybe!"

"So be stubborn a little longer," Bellamy demanded. "I'm not gonna let you die, you hear me? Okay?"

Surprised by Bellamy's change of heart, Harley lifted her head, thankful but was hurt that he could have realized what was right before Sterling's death. "Bellamy, we're out of rope," Clover said after taking her hand off Harley's arm. "What are we going to use?"

Thinking it over, Bellamy leaned back, unsure. "We'll make a new one," he declared.

There was a look of frustration and anger crossing Finn's face as he glared at Bellamy. "If anything happens to our friends when we could - "

"We don't know if we could save our friends!" Bellamy interrupted him, hollering. "For all we know, they may be dead already." There was a slight pause as Harley considered it, for a moment. "We've all thought it. But what we do know is we could save this one girl."

Agreeing, Monroe said her input. "Sterling was one of us," she stated boldly. "She was his friend. I'm in."

"We all are," Clover declared, holding her hands up with a gesture. "But how?"

"We make new rope from the wreckage," Bellamy explained. Harley straightened up, ready to take off and grab anything they'd need. "Go find wires, seatbelts, anything." Murphy nodded back, motioning for Monroe, Harley and Clover to follow him to the trail.

Harley hadn't cared if this wasn't what Finn wanted. She could hear him say he hoped Bellamy was right about this, but in her heart, she without a doubt knew he was.

The seat belt strap Harley had a tight grip on dug into her blisters and rubbed around her wrist. She gritted her teeth, attempting to bare it for now, as they carefully lowered Bellamy down. He was the one with the guts that offered to do this, and risk his life to save Mel, as Sterling had done. But this time, Harley and the others were ready and they weren't going to make the same mistake.

"All right, ease it out slowly," Bellamy requested, backing up and edging his way off of the cliff while gripping his end of the belt. Murphy was in the front of the short line they had, so he was the only one who could see, although they were all lowering Bellamy down with watchful eyes. "Just hang on, I'm almost there!"

"Easy does it now." Harley could hear Clover mumble under her breath. She knew none of them wanted a repeat of Sterling's death, but at least they were working together now.

Harley could faintly hear Bellamy assuring Mel it would be okay and that he had her. She didn't blame Mel for being so hesitant to accept the help, after what just happened, but she eventually caved and was on the end of the rope as well. Harley let out a small noise at the new weight, making her hands grip the belt tighter before it slipped. Her boots dug into the ground, skidding as she tried to hold her stand with her upper arms flexing. Bellamy was heavy enough, but there was five people holding the rope with Mel now.

"I got her!" Bellamy shouted up from below, informing them that Mel was safely with him. "Pull us up!"

Peering over the edge, Harley could hear the grin on Murphy's face as he made a snide comment while pulling the belt back. "Don't you worry Bellamy, I won't drop you."

Annoyed, Finn tugged the rope. "Just pull, Murphy!" He exclaimed.

Harley jerked the rope back, trying to keep her hold steady and firm. The feeling of the belt rubbing against her skin was beginning to ache and burn, but she refused to let go. It was much more difficult to pull than it was to let Bellamy slide down, especially with Mel on the end now, but she ignored the pain in her muscles and tugged harder.

Suddenly, the buckle on the seat belt in between Murphy and Finn had broke and split into two. Harley shouted in surprise, falling back and landing on Monroe. The rope in her hand was useless, she realized, as she looked up and saw Murphy was desperately gripped both split ends of the rope, trying to keep Bellamy and Mel up.

"A little help!" Murphy shouted, his voice strained. Finn was the first there, grabbing Murphy's end and assuming his tugging. Harley scrambled to her feet, pushing herself off of Monroe and rushing over. She knelt down next to Murphy, grimacing as she grabbed the belt again and pulling as hard as she could.

Before Monroe and Clover could join the three, there was a sudden snapping sound, making Harley's head whip to the right. There was an arrow sticking out of the ground, only centimeters from her leg. Her breath hitched in her throat as she realized the trouble they were in when more and more appeared, flying over Harley's head and sticking into the ground.

Grounders.

Harley was immediately frightened, nearly freezing in place, but snapped out of it and kept tugging. "Cover!" Finn shouted as they kept pulling, using one hand to pick a gun up from his side and tossing it to Monroe. Clover had already pulled her handgun out and was shooting away at the trees, searching for any moving target, making Monroe open fire.

"How many are there?!" Bellamy shouted out from below.

"We can't see them!" Finn called back. "Aim for the trees!"

There was another whipping sound, this time sharper, as if something was flying through the air. Harley glanced to her side, searching for the source of it, and seeing Finn roll over and releasing the rope just in time to narrowly miss a spear that landed in his place. From the loss of hands, Harley clambered desperately at the rope they made, scared to death it was going to slip out of her and Murphy's hands.

Finn came back quickly, moving around the spear and grasping his side of the rope again. Harley was pulling as hard as she could, but they were hardly making any progress. She could hear Monroe shout in pain, which added to her distress and fear. Harley's hands and arms were begging for a break, and she could feel her lungs tighten from the breath she was holding by how hard she was trying to tug the rope back all while avoiding any arrows.

"We're gonna need to cut her loose," Murphy eventually said in a short mumble. Startled, Harley glanced towards him, shaking her head back and forth quickly with wide eyes. It wasn't an option, she thought. "Bellamy, you got to cut her loose!"

"No! We can't!" Harley shouted over him, desperate and near tears again. The weight of Bellamy and Mel were tugging the three forward, and Harley scraped her boots into the ground, urgently attempting to pull and back up at the same time.

"Cut her loose!" Murphy demanded in a critical, loud call, over Harley's pressing protests.

If Harley thought the two dangling down the cliff and grounders attacking them were their only problems, she was wrong. She suddenly heard a loud, echoing noise coming from behind them. She nearly froze upon recognizing it as a warning horn. The same one they heard before the acid fog, the same one Lincoln blew to make them hide and save their lives. It meant they were exposed to it, with the pair still hanging over the edge and not any closer to being pulled up.

"Monroe, Clover, get back on the rope!" Finn exclaimed in a command. The two rushed over, seeing that the arrows were no longer coming towards them. Harley was practically on her back now, and Clover joined her side putting her hand in front of hers and joining the other four in hauling the belt again.

With the five of them, it was much easier to pull than only three. Harley backed up, making the rope twist around her arm so she could have a better grip, as they heaved the rope back. She made it a quick process, putting one hand in front of the other repeatedly, until they could see both Bellamy and Mel's heads poking over the brim.

As they crawled up, Harley sighed in relief and released the rope, laying her head back and panting. She slowly sat up, forcing herself, and seeing Bellamy and Murphy exchange a look and a curt nod as Mel thanked them. She gave the girl a small smile, unwrapping the belt around her arm with a short wince when feeling the pain like sharp needles in her skin from pulling so hard. There was no time to be concerned about it.

"We have to take cover from the fog," Finn breathed out, fast. Harley knew he was right and grimaced as she turned around, trying to stand, before she heard a voice a few feet away.

"Bellamy!"

Glancing up at how familiar it was, Harley forgot about the burning pain. Her eyes widened in surprise and her heartbeat skipped a beat when seeing who it was, before she whispered out one name.

        "Octavia?"
