( sixteen )
After being on the ground for so long and having no contact to The Ark or her parents, Harley left the tent with a smile. Raven had set up a screening radio, so she could talk to her mom and dad almost face to face. She went on about Earth and how beautiful it was, and how she couldn't wait for them to get here. She told them about the people she was with, like Octavia and Clarke. She told them about who she missed, like Murphy. And then she told them about who they lost, like Wells and Roma. Harley was glad they listened, but she knew it was someone else's turn to talk to their parents.
So Harley joined Jasper and Monty, who were working with organizing the nuts section of their food supplies. Winter was nearing, which meant soon they'd need to lock themselves in the dropship and try not to die of hypothermia. The threat of the grounders still laid over them, and it was up to Bellamy and Clarke to figure out what to do.
Harley looked up, her hand deep in a bin of nuts as Jasper gazed over to the dropship. She sighed to herself when following his eyes, remembering of the grounder inside, that had been brutally tortured days ago to save Finn's life when he possibly couldn't understand English. "What do you think they're gonna do with the grounder?" Jasper asked, turning his head back to Monty and Harley.
Without looking away, Harley watched as Bellamy exited the dropship door. He didn't have any blood stained on him, unlike last time she remembered, so she hoped he was still alive in there, as long as he was chained up. "I'd rather not think about it," she heard Monty answer.
Looking back to them, Harley shrugged slowly. "I'd prefer they keep him alive, but.." She trailed off, referring to Bellamy, as she pulled her arm out and separated the nuts into the corrective bins. She unrolled her sleeves, that had been pulled up to her elbows, to finish what was left.
"I mean, it's been days since Bellamy captured him," Jasper added. "How long until his friends come looking?" Harley took a brief glance towards the woods, only able to see trees from the wall that was built around them. She knew the grounder's could be watching them right now, looking for the prisoner they were holding onto, but she wasn't too frightened.
The tense silence between the three was broken by Monty's light-hearted tone. "Cheer up!" He encouraged. "In that time, we'll all be dead from hypothermia."
Harley let out a short laugh at the joke, that could be true, as Monty ate one of the nuts before making a gesture to Jasper. His best friend opened his mouth, and Monty tossed one in, making the shot. Jasper grinned and chewed on the nut, before they each lifted their hands and slapped it, which Harley could only assume was a secret handshake they had.
After a moment, Harley lifted one of the nuts and examined it. She had yet to eat one, but was pretty hungry, not having much to eat from all day. "Are you sure these are good to eat?" She asked. It was a bit of an off color, and she assumed it was grown to adjust to the radiation.
"I was raised on Farm Station, I caught on to what's good or not," Monty explained, eating another. "Besides, a lot of other's have been eating them." He gestured behind him to the other teenager's hard at work, some of which having a packet of nuts they were happily eating. "I don't see anyone falling over and choking."
Water and tiny nibbles of food was only doing so much for Harley's stomach, and she knew that she could eat while she worked, as long as it was safe. The two boys watched, waiting for a reaction, as Harley slowly put the nut she held into her mouth and munched. When an amazing, pleasing, flavor burst in Harley's mouth she quickly nodded her head and grinned. "Mm, yes!" She exclaimed, reaching for another. "If they kill me, I think I'll go happy."

After that, Harley really didn't remember much. She remembered hardly finishing the organizing of rations, all while eating more of the nuts Monty and Jasper introduced her to. That was really where the issue started for her, but she wasn't aware of that, not now. Harley was leaning back, into a seat they had pulled out of the dropship, her head tilted with her eyes shut, making the sun beat down on her skin.
Harley felt like she was floating. The sun didn't bother her, even though she knew she was becoming all warm and sweaty. Her body felt lifted, like she wasn't there, but somewhere else, such as space once more. She is always a happy girl, no matter what the circumstances were, but at the moment, Harley was the lightest she's ever been. She was more than happy, her head was spinning with bliss. She knew she was supposed to be working, preparing for winter, but all she wanted to do was laugh and talk.
Finally, Harley opened her eyes. She slumped forward, her wide eyes darting to look from each of her friends. Some were laughing uncontrollably, others were talking to others or themselves, and even a few were crying. Harley frowned, seeing the tears. She didn't like seeing other people sad. She knew deep in her heart she wanted to help them, to comfort them, for whatever was making them sad.
"I'm coming," Harley whispered as she rose to her feet. The light feeling spread to her head as she did so, making her stumble when she walked forward. "I want to help."
After a few steps, Harley didn't make it very far. The tip of her boot caught into a bent root sticking out of the ground and she fell forward with a yelp. Harley could feel herself hit the ground, but it didn't hurt, like it should have. She laid flat on her chest, feeling no pain, despite the scratching on her palms dotting with blood.
"Yo! Are you alright?"
At the sound of the question, Harley looked up. It didn't sound familiar, it sounded as if it was coming from behind her. "Hello?" She whispered, blue eyes flickering around to find the source of the voice despite finding no one in front of her.
Harley felt two gentle, warm hands on each of her side. "Help me out here, turn over so I can look at you." Harley started giggling under her breath, but complied, allowing the other to turn her over and lay flat on her back. She laughed louder as she finally caught a glimpse at who was trying to help her.
The sun rays bounced over the golden curls underneath a black hat of the girl that was leaning over Harley. She had a soft look on her round face, and wide doey blue eyes that were full of worry. Harley blinked a few times, trying to let her vision adjust. "Hi," she whispered as the girl studied her. "You're pretty. Like an angel."
A faint blush creeped up the girl's neck at the compliment from a dazed Harley. "Not so bad yourself," she replied. "But usually people refer to me as Clover." She softly traced her hand down Harley's arms, checking the palm of her hands that were scratched up from her fall to see if it wasn't too bad.
"Clover," Harley repeated the name, sounding fond. "That means you're lucky. You can be my four leaf clover. My good luck charm!" She was speaking loudly, in between small fits of laughter, making Clover look at her strangely.
"Alright, so it looks like you're on something," Clover mumbled, helping Harley sit up. "As far as I'm concerned, Earth doesn't have any special plants. What have you done today? Are you hallucinating, is it the heat?"
"Mm, no," Harley hummed, leaning her head on Clover's shoulder. "I - I had nuts. It's funny, cause I don't like nuts. You know? Boy's nuts." Clover sputtered at the innuendo, unsure of how to respond. "I like you though. You're pretty."
"Okay, okay." Clover wrapped her arm around Harley's neck, pressing her palm to the hazy girl's cheek. She gently guided her up until she was on her feet, keeping her arms woven around Harley. "You're gonna take a seat, probably nap.." Clover escorted Harley back to the seats, steering her downwards. "I'm gonna go find out what's happening to all of you."
Jutting out her lower lip, Harley gripped onto Clover's arms before she could leave. "Are you gonna leave?" She whispered, her eyes lidded, showing how tired she was suddenly.
"No, I'll be back really quick," Clover promised, an amused smile on her face. "You take a rest, don't move from this spot. Can you do that for me?"
Wanting to make Clover happy, Harley nodded quickly and let her go. "I'll wait," she said softly to herself, while leaning back into the seat to make herself comfortable. "I can wait."
━━━━━━━━
Slowly, Harley came back to reality as did everyone else. She stopped hallucinating and acting giddy by nightfall, making her remember where and who she was. Raven and Finn made sure to burn whatever nuts were left over, but the ache in Harley's head told her she wouldn't have eaten anymore even if she wanted to. The other delinquents were in the same state, looking as lost as she was.
A sudden heavy warmth draping over Harley's shoulder startled her. She jumped, turning her head, and realizing it was a cloth being held by a familiar blonde girl with a tender smile. The same one Harley had made a fool of herself in front of while high. "Hey," Clover greeted, plopping down on the flat top beside her. "How're you feeling?"
"Warmer, now," Harley responded, quiet, and pulling the cloth tighter around her shoulders. "Thanks for the blanket."
"I thought you might be cold, or tired still," Clover said, shrugging one shoulder. "From all that bad flirting telling me how pretty I was." Harley winced at the bluntness coming from the other, despite the teasing smile.
"I, uh, was pretty high?" Harley stammered, rubbing her forehead, slightly embarrassed and feeling small. She wanted to apologize, but Clover hadn't seemed like she minded.
Humming, Clover nodded. "So, you don't still think I'm pretty?"
Before Harley could answer in another stutter, that she did indeed think Clover is very pretty, the two bonding was interrupted by Miller shouting. Her head turned, gazing forward to see him rushing out of the dropship. "He's gone!" He shouted. "The grounder is gone!"
Worried chatter spread throughout the delinquents as panic settled in the pit of Harley's chest, making her eyes widen. She stood up, holding the blanket. "What are we going to do?!" She exclaimed, alarmed and dreading what would happen, while staring back at a wordless Clover.
Before Clover could assure her an empty hope, the delinquents were stopped by Bellamy's sudden shout. "Let the grounder's come!" At the sound, Clover wrapped her arm around a worried Harley and directed her to where the delinquents were crowding around where their two leaders were entering the camp. "We've been afraid of them for far too long, and why?" He continued, asking. "Because of their knives and spears. I don't know about you, but I'm tired of being afraid!"
Harley watched as suddenly the pair had tossed the two full sacks they were carrying over their shoulders to the front of them. Shocked, Harley got a good look at what they were when the fire illuminated off of them. Long, black, guns. She took a small step back, Clover drawing her hand from Harley's shoulders to her lower back, making sure she was okay. Harley wasn't sure she was. Maybe she was a bit frightened by them, but she hadn't believed in the use of guns. They could start a war.
"These are weapons, okay?" Clarke warmed them. "They are not toys and we have to be prepared to give them up to the guards when the dropships come, but until then, they're gonna help keep us safe."
"And there are plenty more when these came from," Bellamy added with a wide smile. "Tomorrow we start training, and if the grounders come, we're gonna be ready to fight."
Shaking her head, Harley leaned back into Clover's touch. "I don't know about this," she said in a small mumble, making sure no one could hear her. "This can't be good."
