( seventeen )

Back in The Ark, there was their own celebration for Unity Day. On Earth, some of the delinquents had crowded around the small screen to watch Chancellor Jaha give his speech. It was a day they celebrated when The Ark really came together, twelve station formed by the many. There was originally supposed to be thirteen, but when one refused to team up with the rest, it was was blown out of the sky to prove a point. Peace came out of the violence, and for that, The Ark celebrated the day they came to be.

Harley stood in between Clover and a shy girl named Fox, her hands crossed over her chest as she listened with a smile on her face. "My friends, this is a historic Unity Day," Jaha announced. The screen glitched a bit, but his voice was still loud and clear. "Every year, we mark the moment our ancestors of the twelve stations joined to form The Ark, but this is the last time we do so while aboard her. Next year, on the ground." He paused, allowing the people around him to began clapping.

"Right," Miller scoffed, picking his hand out of his pocket. "After we did all the work!" He motioned to himself and the others, making them nod in agreement. "Someone shut him up."

"You shut up, Miller," Raven retorted, leaning forward to peer at him. "No one's forcing you to watch."

Miller seemed annoyed, but he still stayed quiet, making Harley tune back into Jaha after the small argument. "For ninety-seven years, we have eked out an existence, hoping that someday our descendants would return to Earth.."

Harley tilted her head as he continued his speech, listening closely. She had a smile on her face, thankful that soon they wouldn't be alone. Certain delinquents had been chosen to be gunners, and due to her inability to hold a knife of all things, Bellamy decided she definitely wasn't one of them. She didn't protest, knowing that there was no chance she'd be able to shoot someone else, regardless if it was a grounder. The threat of them was still around, considering the grounder has been gone. She was scared, sure, but she believed there was always the chance of peace. Maybe soon they wouldn't need the guns.

Suddenly, a loud shouting close by in the distance caught Harley's attention and brought her back to Earth. She wasn't frightened, as the voice was easily recognizable. It was Jasper, holding a large container above his head. "Whoo! Yeah!" He cheered. "Monty strikes again!" He stumbled down a slope, making his way towards the group. "Call this batch Unity Juice! Who's thirsty?!"

Excited, the delinquents began crowding around him in a circle with steel cups outstretched in their hands. Jasper began pouring Monty's moonshine into each one, making sure not to miss anyone. Clover grinned, and Harley knew she was one of the gunners off duty for now. She grabbed her canteen, ready for her own. "Are you coming?" She asked Harley, unscrewing the top.

Shyly, Harley tucked her hair behind her ears. "I don't really drink," she answered timidly. "But, go have fun!" She insisted. She knew the delinquents wanted to celebrate, knowing that soon the first dropship with the guards would be here soon and stop the party. After being on guard for so long, they seemed ready to loosen up for one last night before the adults came.

As Clover wandered off in Jasper's direction, Harley watched with a smile. She could still hear Jaha talking, but ignored it as someone moving caught her attention. The figure was a flash, but she could see them before they disappeared out of one of the tunnels they built to move around quicker. It was Octavia, sneaking out, while everyone was busy. Harley stumbled forward, craning her neck, but the girl was definitely gone.

"Did you see that?" A voice said from beside Harley. She turned her head, seeing Finn, was staring in the same direction as her. "Was that Octavia?"

"Yeah," Harley answered with a short nod, confused. "Should we tell Bellamy?" She remembered the last time Octavia vanished, and how he marched out the whole camp to find his sister to bring her back safe.

"Probably not," Finn said, quiet. "I'll go after her at nightfall, follow her tracks. This time she left willingly."

Realizing Finn had a point, Harley agreed. "Can I come with you?" She asked, hopeful. "I want to make sure she's okay." Finn looked hesitant, ready to turn her down. Harley gave him her sad, puppy eyes. "I won't be a bother!" She promised. "I'll be quiet." Even though it was nearly impossible to keep Harley quiet, unless she was completely stunned by something, she tried to swear this time so he'd bring her along.

Finally, Finn caved. "Sure, yeah," he accepted after a moment's hesitation. "Meet me by the gate tonight. Don't tell Bellamy," he reminded her. "Don't let him ruin everyone's fun."

━━━━━━━━

True to her word, Harley stayed as quiet as she could as Finn led her through the woods, tracking Octavia's trail. Eventually, he stopped, signalling her to come to a halt when the pair came to an opening. Harley watched, frozen, as two people came out of the hole. Her eyes widened when seeing one of them was Octavia, who did look okay, but being accompanied by the grounder they had caught.

"Is that - ?!" Before Harley could finish her sentence, the grounder whirled around, pulling a knife out and pointing it threateningly in their direction, while shielding Octavia. Harley swallowed down a screech of fear, grabbing Finn's jacket as he pointed forward his own knife and nearly falling over from stumbling back from the surprise.

"Harley?! Finn?!" Octavia exclaimed in surprise, grabbing the grounder's arm to stop him before he could attack. "Lincoln, wait, wait! They're my friends!" At her words, the grounder - Lincoln - quickly calmed down, lowering his knife.

Now that Harley could see Lincoln, he looked less threatening. She remembered the tattoos when Bellamy was torturing him, and all the blood. He looked cleaner now, but the hostile look made her feel uneasy still. Finn, however, turned the knife over. The same one that he was stabbed with, by the exact grounder they were in front of. "I think you lost this."

Harley was very hesitant when Lincoln told them it was safer to talk in his cave, but Octavia seemed to trust him. She walked inside on unsteady legs, glancing around. "So, what the hell are you two doing here?" Octavia demanded.

"I could ask you the same thing," Finn shot back when Lincoln stopped to look at him.

"Finn," Harley stopped him with a small voice before he could start a fight.

Finn sighed, but cooled down more. "I could also ask how long you've known he speaks English.." Octavia looked at her feet. "But I won't." He looked behind him, and picked up a wooden horn, the same one that got him stabbed. "You blew this when your people were hunting us." Lincoln nodded, agreeing.

Harley, surprised, remembered when they were searching for Octavia and being hunted by grounders that took off when they heard the acid fog signal. She had no idea it was him. "Really?" She asked before smiling. "You saved our lives." Lincoln was unsure of how to respond to that, but Harley was slapping Finn on his arm lightly. "He saved our lives!" She repeated, grateful. The feeling of fear faded and was replaced with the excitement of being right. "I knew there were good grounders!"

"I stabbed you," Lincoln argued, staring down at Finn.

"You were scared," Harley said, assuring him, even though she was unsure of how a well-built frightening grounder was scared. "We were intruders." She didn't doubt Finn, or even Bellamy, would have reacted the same if they were in that position.

Nodding, Finn agreed. "And we tortured you," he added. "If we can get along, then maybe there's hope. Learn from history instead of repeating it, right?"

"How's that gonna happen?" Octavia asked, disagreeing with Finn's idea.

"For starters, no more killing," Finn offered.

After a moment, Lincoln shook his head to Harley's disappointment. "I don't have the power to call a truce," he explained.

"Then bring me someone who does," Finn demanded, frustrated. Harley was proud he had such a good plan, but Lincoln scoffed at the request. "Look, the rest of our people are coming down here," he made clear. "The first ship lands in two days." Lincoln looked surprised, but let him continue when Octavia confirmed it was true. "And because of the attacks, they're sending mostly soldiers, the people that enforce our laws. The Ark is about survival at any cost, and they'll kill people who fall out of line," he stated. "When those people get down here, if they feel threatened, they will start a war, and I don't want that."

"You don't either, do you?" Harley asked. Lincoln didn't have to answer, she could see that he didn't, and knew from his actions. "But if they see that we're at peace, we can stay that way." She didn't realize she sounded like she was begging, trying to get Lincoln to understand, but knowing he couldn't if he didn't grow up in The Ark.

But Lincoln did understand, when he agreed with a nod of his head. "Alright," he spoke. "You bring your leader, I'll bring mine," he offered.

"What, Bellamy?" Octavia asked. "He'd never go for this." Knowing him, Harley knew it was true. He was always encouraging the delinquents to be warriors, fight against trained grounder's at all costs, even when they weren't threatened. She didn't want that. She wanted peace.

"No," Lincoln answered immediately. "Not your brother." Harley didn't blame him for sounding revolted towards him.

Catching on, Finn spoke with realization.

"Clarke."

"I think it's nice to be able to trust grounders. Don't you?"

Harley broke the silence from where her and Octavia were left by Lincoln and Finn the next morning who took off to find their leader. They were on a rickety bridge, that was somehow stable despite the nuclear bombs it endured years ago. She felt like she needed to know more about Lincoln, and possibly the other grounders.

Octavia stopped from where she was pacing. "I do," she responded sincerely. Harley believed her, knowing that Octavia's heart was in the right place. She nodded, showing she understood.

The pair were stopped when Finn and Clarke finally emerged out of the woods and arrived onto their side of the bridge. Clarke paused to look around, before her eyes landed on Octavia and she caught on. "So that's how you set this up," she stated. "You helped him escape, didn't you?"

Thinking of her and Harley's short discussion, Octavia glared at Clarke. "I trust him."

At a sound coming from the other side, Harley turned around. "Guys, someone's coming," she whispered. Soon, the wood's trees moved, and Lincoln came rushing out. Noticing him, Octavia took off in his direction, meeting him in the middle, and embracing him. Harley smiled at the sight, tilting her head, but completely missing how Clarke looked over the edge of the railing.

Frightened, Clarke looked ready to back out, but Finn grabbed her hand to silently reassure her that it would be fine. Soon, Harley heard another odd sound she couldn't make out before they came into her line of view. It was three grounders, all on the back of an animal that made her eyes widen in excitement. "Are those horses?!" She whispered loudly, ignoring the scary woman in the middle. She's never seen an animal like them, not in anything but pictures. "They are! They're so cute.."

Seeing that they had weapons, Finn pulled Clarke forward to meet with Lincoln, Harley rushing after him. "Hey, we said no weapons!" He exclaimed.

"I was told there wouldn't be," Lincoln replied honestly by the own surprised look on his face.

Shaking her head, Clarke released Finn's hand. "It's too late now." She stepped forward, Finn ready to follow, but Lincoln suddenly stopped him, informing the pair that she would go alone. "I'll be fine," Clarke promised Finn, despite his protests. "It's time to do better."

Upon seeing Clarke walk forward, the lady bravely slid off her horse and met her. Harley couldn't hear them from where she was, and bit her bottom lip in worry. No matter what Clarke seemed to be saying with a friendly figure, the other still had her eyes narrowed in their leader's direction threateningly.

"Is she as friendly as you?" Harley said softly to Lincoln, hopeful that this could work, as the two leader's spoke.

"I.. No," Lincoln answered with a shake of his head, truthfully.

Believing him, Harley pressed her lips together in worry before keeping her head up. "I'm sure it's going to be fine."

All of a sudden, someone shouting below the bridge had changed everything. "Clarke, run!" Harley barely had time to see who it was, before there was gunfire. Confused and scared, she backed up quickly, Lincoln and Octavia following as Finn raced forward to save Clarke.

Arrows flew through the air, aiming for them. Scared, Harley ran until she was out of range, her hand gripping the railing and looking over the edge. She could finally see the cause of it. Jasper, Bellamy, and Raven just below, shooting towards the grounders before taking off. "Oh no," she breathed out, grimacing.

"Run!" Lincoln was encouraging Octavia, despite the arrow sticking out of his shoulder when Harley turned back around. "Don't stop till you get behind your walls, go! Take her!"

"Octavia, come on!" Harley urged, motioning with her hand. Clarke gripped Octavia despite her protesting, pulling her with the other two. Harley felt sick as she ran with her group into the woods, knowing their safe place was behind the walls.

━━━━━━━━

When the group eventually got back to camp, including the three shooters, it was night once more. They were panting, tired from running nearly all day in fear of the grounders. They stopped at the gate by Bellamy's words directed towards Finn; "You got anything to say?"

"Yeah, I told you no guns!" Finn shouted, towards Clarke.

"You asked him to bring guns when the agreement was no weapons at all?" Harley asked, clutching her aching chest, disappointed even though the grounder's brought weapons of their own.

"And I told you that we couldn't trust the grounders," Clarke shot back. "I was right." It doesn't matter who was right, it just mattered where they were now, Harley realized.

"Why didn't you tell me what you were up to?" Raven asked Finn, hurt.

Upset and not in the mood, Finn rolled his eyes. "I tried, but you were busy making bullets for your gun."

"You're lucky she brought that!" Bellamy argued, cutting in. "They came to kill you guys!" Not believing it, Harley shook her head.

"You don't know that!" Finn shouted back, fuming. "Jasper fired the first shot!"

"Guys," Harley weakly spoke up. "There's no need to argue-"

Just as angry, Octavia shot a dark scowl at Jasper before interrupting Harley. "You ruined everything," she snapped, storming off. Harley knew this wasn't an argument she could no longer be apart of. She followed Octavia into the camp, knowing it was a low blow to blame Jasper when he thought he was doing the right thing.

"Octavia," Harley called out gently, making the girl stop from where she leaned against the gate, enraged. "It's going to be fine. We can set up another meeting somehow, maybe Lincoln can - "

"Don't you get it?!" Octavia fumed, cutting her off. "They started a war!" She furiously pointed to the group they left behind. "We are at war, Harley! Can you stop thinking that this is okay for one minute?!"

At Octavia's irritated shouting in her direction, Harley frowned, her lower lip trembling as she took a step back. "I just wanted to help," she murmured, hurt. She heard a familiar voice calling her name and slowly turned her head when seeing Clover approach them, a gun in hand.

"Harley, are you okay? You've been gone since yesterday," Clover asked the second she was close enough, holding the weapon in one hand and putting her free hand on Harley's shoulder, seeing she was upset. Harley shook her head, torn between the hurt of being yelled at by her friend and the fact that they were in the middle of the war. Angry, Clover looked in Octavia's direction. "Did you yell at her?!"

Before Octavia could respond, there was a loud noise that caught the three girl's attention. It sounded like an explosion. Harley forced herself to look away and turn around, looking towards the source of the sound, in the sky. There was a bright beam of light, falling to Earth, but quickly. Harley was slightly happy for a second, before she noticed that it was turning orange, and it wasn't good.

"Is it.." Harley breathed out, watching with a bad feeling. She knew it was from The Ark, and it wasn't good. She watched in horror as it finally landed somewhere far, with a loud 'boom' and a cloud of smoke pouring from the spot.

Knowing that the guards were on the dropship, as Jaha said they'd be on the first one, Harley remembered her father that was one of them. "No," she cried quietly in despair. The tears from being shouted at by Octavia for the war they were in finally sprung from her eyes and she backed up, falling into Clover's embrace and allowing herself to cry, believing her only family to be dead.
