Liana crept through the camp, glancing up at the bright moon. She wondered for the hundredth time if this was going to work- and what Demitri would do if they got caught. Don't think about that, Liana.
She met up with the others in the Foreseer's tent, surprised about the turnout. Charlie and Travis even brought a couple Light Shifters to help with hiding their backup from sight.
"Is everyone ready?" she asked.
They all nodded, but she shared their fears.
Quietly, obscured from sight by the Light Shifters, they traveled to the field near Blackhawk Bay. Everyone was tense, and Liana's stomach filled with jitters. She clenched her fists so tight that her knuckles turned pale.
Snapping branches made everyone jump as they turned around, trying to see who was behind them. Travis held a glowing orb of light above his head so everyone could see.
Demitri, dragging a pale- faced Echo, was trudging through the forest, muttering to his guards. "Found this one trying to sneak out. My guess is the witch's doing. Going to rescue Jerik and that boy."
Liana flinched at the nickname. "They know," she whispered.
"Plan?" Kian asked behind her.
"Split up. Half of us distract, the other half sneak away with the Light Shifters to the meeting. Maybe this can still work." Liana bit her lip. "Echoes, come with me to distract. Everyone else go with Iris."
The group split, and Liana led her party through the woods, her nerves on fire. "Make bird calls. They'll think we scared them away."
The Echoes nodded, their voices contorting into shrill shrieks. Soon enough, they heard voices.
"They're over here! Come on!"
Everyone bolted, trying to stay ahead of the guards and Demitri. A couple echoes swerved away, trying to throw Demitri off. For a second, Liana thought they could get away.
But then guards emerged from the trees in front of them, bringing everyone to a screeching halt.
They were trapped.
