IF THERE WAS ONE THING THAT SHE DID NOT EXPECT, it was to stumble across a giant bear, wait no, wolf (?) in her backyard. well, technically it wasn't really a backyard as much as the great outdoors beyond her property line, yet, it was close enough. she stayed still, watching as the beast turned its massive head to make eye contact with her, its ears perking up to attention.

this giant wolf was, well, oddly human like in facial expression, especially the eyes. it had long, shaggy fur, an undercoat of white and a top coat of light red and browns. to top it off, it had speckles of grey and black along its back.

she did not know what went through its mind, but it recoiled almost as though someone had slapped it across the head.

"SETH!"

"SHIT! SHIT! WHAT DO I DO!"

she stood there for a moment, unsure of how to proceed with the encounter, but after a few silent and still seconds, she stepped forward. whatever battle of thoughts the wolf had been in stopped, and it reacted to her approach like a scared cat, fur raising in suspicion and a quiet, fearful grumble passing through no doubt giant teeth. besides the warning, she felt no fear enter her heart, just a strange curiosity.

there had been rumors of large bears in this forest, her new neighbors had been kind enough to inform her of such, cautioning her not to go too far into the treeline, but she never thought that those rumors would come to fruition. giant, murderous bears? totally.

this wolf did not seem hostile though, and if it were any dangerous predator, it would've ended her before she even stepped upon it.

"DON'T GROWL AT HER!"

"WELL, WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO??? WHY ISN'T SHE RUNNING AWAY?"

"hello." her words were not what the wolf was expecting, that she could tell. it hummed a simple response, ears flicking around endlessly, tail twitching at every noise in the woods, noises she could not hear. she stepped forwards again, intent on making sure she wasn't going crazy.

the wolf made another noise, but before she could take a third step forward, the sound of a branch breaking made her head swivel around. were there more?

"sam, approach her slowly, don't scare her, geez."

"don't sass me, jared."

sure enough, through the thicket of a fern bush, the shadow of another wolf appeared, inching through the underbrush towards them. if she thought this wolf was giant, the other one was gigantic, standing tall with jet black fur and lips curling back to reveal a set of pearly whites that could definitely finish her off in a second or less. she gulped. this wolf was not like the other one. the first wolf was tiny, jumpy and curious. this wolf was demanding, cautious and dangerous.

"hey, there." she found herself mumbling, slightly intimidated.

"great. just your appearance has her scared. we should have let seth deal with this."

"hey, it's not my fault!"

"just wait till she sees you, jake, she's going to cry and run away."

"because of his face?"

"shut it, leah!"

she watched, bewildered, as multiple wolves emerged from the trees, creeping into the small clearing with different reactions entirely. she stepped forwards again, towards the smaller wolf, waiting to see the reactions of the others. none but one wolf moved, a sleeker but equally sized one with icy silver fur and matching grey and black speckles. this wolf stepped forward with a threatening growl, but it was quickly silenced by the intimidating one.

the rest watched curiously as she stepped within reach of the wolf. she felt tiny as she gazed up at it, searching its brown eyes for any sign of fear. finding none, she reached forward and placed a hand on its nose.

"awww, baby seth!"

"being pet like a dog, how embarrassing!"

it leant into her pet, allowing her to scratch behind its ears and under its chin.

"huh, you're just like a giant puppy."

if only she knew how true that statement would turn out to be.

THE WOLVES LOOKED BETWEEN themselves absentmindedly, watching a flustered seth fall prey to the scratch behind the ear.

"well, what do we do with her now?" jacob looked to sam, followed by most of the pack.

"anyone imprint?" he seemed to settle on, looking around at the younger wolves first, who all shook their heads. their existence wasn't supposed to be shared with humans, especially those who weren't in the tribe.

"great."

"i say we take her with us!" jared spoke up, the idea immediately getting shut down by embry and quill, who scoffed loudly in their heads.

"and what, feed her to the council? or wait, if we don't we're gonna be the dinner. if billy hears about this he's gonna freak." quill looked over at seth, rolling his eyes at the puppy who laid on his belly, eyes closed and letting out relaxed hums. jacob imagined his dad yelling and everyone collectively flinched.

"yeah, no. not gonna happen." leah growled, obviously annoyed that her brother had fallen for such a basic trap.

"okay, what if we just leave her be," paul spoke up, sitting down and curling his tail around his paws, "let her believe it was all just a dream?"

"with the state seth is in, i doubt she'll just 'forget' about us." jared sat, ears pinned back.

"but, i doubt she's going to run and tell anybody. she's new to the area, that's for sure." embry pointed out, and thoughts of agreement surged within the pack mind.

"yeah, and we don't want her to get attacked by a bloodsucker." quill commented.

"it is settled then. we'll look after her."

SHE SAT AT THE TREELINE, patiently awaiting the wolves on patrol to find her. it had become somewhat of a routine for her, and as time went on the pack got more and more comfortable with her presence. she was even able to pet the silver wolf who seemed to have it out for her at the start, who now loved her pets more than anything.

she had began to learn their personalities, and gave them all names that she never spoke aloud, but it helped her recognize who was who. especially the tinier wolves, who had similar coat colors.

sure enough, heavy footfalls echoed through the trees, creeping towards her location. two wolves entered the clearing, shaking off the rain from their coats. it had stopped raining minutes before she left the house, but it was still damp out, and so when the big russet brown wolf bounded over to her, she flinched. water sprayed all over her sweater and she burst out laughing at the giant puppy who rolled over in front of her.

to jacob, he also found it hilarious, and laughed as well as he could in his wolf form. embry padded up beside him, being much gentler with his approach, sitting just before the girl with a grin. the two let pleased hums out as she pet under their chins.

"how's it going today? any deer? other wolves?" she pondered, knowing they could not answer her. both wolves laid down, the grey and white one expectantly. she scratched behind his ears. although they couldn't answer, jacob liked thinking of his answers, and embry seemed to try and act them out (in a totally inconspicuous way - he was sure).

she didn't know that the only danger they had to worry about was vampires, and since victoria was taken care of, they were okay. though, they still worried for her and the other citizens hiking, so they would patrol as much as they needed (especially with the pesky cullens). they tried to find her every day and make sure no harm had come to her, but she made it easy by meeting up at the meadow every time.

"well, i have to be heading home!" she got up, making embry whine as his pets stopped.

"aw man."

"i swear, you act like you imprinted on her."

"she gives the best pets!"

"sorry!" she chuckled, waving goodbye one last time before making her way back on the path she had worn in. little did she know, the two tracked her from a distance until she got safely home before continuing their patrol. they howled as a way to say:

𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐲𝐚!
