"COME ON," richie whispered, extending his hand out with a serious look, leaning up into your window like the total troublemaker he was. you scowled at him, heaving a leg onto the ledge of your window, your eyes trying desperately to get a good look at the ground below, but it was a little too dark out to see that good.

"i know how to get out of my window idiot." you hissed at him, swinging the other leg over to sit on the window sill, glaring down at the boy below you, making out his figure with help of the moonlight. you gripped the window with a racing heart, trying to be quiet as you slowly lowered yourself down the side of your house, excitement building in your chest. richie just waited patiently, but with a small smirk on his face.

"you know, you look mighty fine from this angle." he commented, licking his lips teasingly. you immediately stopped, your teeth clenching in annoyance. in a spur of the moment type of thing, you kicked your foot at him. you didn't comment, but your cheeks were heating up quickly as you twisted around and lowered yourself to the ground.

when you were at your arms length you dropped down, hissing quietly at the shock of hitting the ground, and you tumbled into his side unfortunately. he chuckled, helping you up as you rubbed your knees in pain. looking up at him, you were surprised by the close proximity and promptly shuffled away, rolling your eyes as he looked you up and down.

"you're such a perv," you began, beginning to walk away from him in the direction of the park, your hands on your exposed arms, trying to warm up a little. "and you don't even try to hide it."  he swiftly followed you, throwing his hand around your shoulder like it was nothing and pulled you closer to his side. normally you would've shoved him away and cringed in absolute disgust, but he was really warm, and it was cold. so you sucked up your ego and let him guide you to the park. the walk was pretty silent, saying he didn't even comment on you letting him put his arm around you, and instead stared ahead of you like it was nothing.

that set off some warning bells in your head, and you looked up at him with a calm expression, seeing his frown. he was lost in thought, but was still heading the right way, having memorized it long before with your constant adventures. you were best friends. you went everywhere together. but he seemed sad, and you were confused. of course, everyone was sad sometimes, and the loud, obnoxious boy who never shut up with inappropriate jokes would often let his emotions show around you. he trusted you, and it meant a lot, because he didn't really trust a lot of people.

"rich, tell me what's wrong." you murmured, brushing his hair away from his face when his arm slipped off your shoulder. by then you had reached the small park, and gently grasped his hand to lead him to the swing set. he followed without missing a beat, a sigh leaving his lips. he knew exactly what was wrong, of course, but you didn't. and he wasn't planning on telling you, but when you looked up at him with the most gentle and patient eyes, he knew he was done for.

he couldn't ignore it anymore. it tortured him to watch you look at other boys, and flirt with them (albeit casual and accidental most times, but still saddening). he hated not being able to hug you or kiss you, or tell you how much you mattered to him, and it was too much to ignore. but trust me, he tried to get over you, but every day you always wore that bright smile that made you look even more beautiful, even if you weren't feeling happy. it grew to be something he looked forward to every day, and he found himself sad when you didn't show up for school. richie didn't care if you were sick or not, he would bike to your house after classes to check on you and hang out. he couldn't ignore that you were one of his reasons to be happy, and he didn't ever want to lose you.

so there he sat, on a child's swing with his emotions on full display, the love of his life sitting next to him wondering why he was so glum. and he was too tired to ignore it any further.

"richie?" you asked softly, kicking your feet to swing back and forth as you waited for his response. he would talk when he wanted to, and even if he never did, you would sit in silence with him, knowing your presence might provide some sort of comfort for his inner turmoil. but the brunette boy looked up slowly, clearing his throat.

"y/n, i have something to tell you. and you might not like it- i mean, hell- im not even sure i want to say it right now, but i need to... fuck this is hard." he rambled on and on, and finally you broke his spill of words by placing a hand on his shoulder, pulling him into a side hug. he wrapped his arms around your waist and hugged you tight. it was quite awkward since you were both on swings, but he really needed it, and you could tell.

"richie it's okay, what's wrong darling?" he smiled slightly despite the situation, digging his nose into your shoulder while you waited. you had a habit of calling him darling in serious moments, 'cause you felt bad for him. he was one of the unfortunate souls that were unable to really express bad emotions and often kept them bottled up until they explode. and rash decisions were made when that happened, so you tried not to be too emotionally invested in his explanation, knowing it could be off the top of his head.

"oh shit, here it goes." you heard him mumble as he pulled away from you and took a deep breath. he looked at you with wide brown eyes, but they quickly closed as he began spewing out his reasoning; "look, y/n... i've liked you since- like.... like well- a long time and i totally get it if you don't return the feelings i mean, look at me! i'm an emotionally unstable wreck that is so annoying and literally am unable to tell my best friend that i love her."

he slammed his mouth shut, tensing right up as you froze, staring at him with wide eyes, a quite shocked expression, really. your long-time best friend, the boy you would do anything for, fight any bully, or willingly walk into a creepy haunted mansion that held a killer clown for (that was a different story). he meant everything to you. he was always there for you, and never complained, even when you ranted about things he didn't understand, or you came crying to when a stupid boy broke your heart. he always gave you that tight hug and assured you everything would be okay in the long run because he was always by your side. you loved him like you had never loved anyone else, and it only took six years and a small rant to make you realize.

you scrambled to your feet and grabbed his hand, tugging him off the swing set onto the playground. he avoided eye contact, trying to sink away into a black hole. richie had never expressed his feelings like that. he hated it! he felt so vulnerable. but yet, when you were both standing face to face in the middle of the faded blue playground, the starts shining down at the  moons peak, you cupped his cheek gently which made him look up in question. he was expecting a rejection, but instead your lips were swiftly pressed to his, and everything that he was trying to avoid came crashing down like a meteor. all of a sudden he was aware of the chilly wind surrounding you two, and he heard the whistle as it flew, carrying leaves along on an endless journey. he was aware of your body close, and your hand in his, and the other loosely around his neck. it sent shivers down his spine, and his eyes closed, hesitantly returning the kiss.

it was an odd feeling. even though he had desperately wanted to kiss you so many times before,, and thought about how it would play out, it didn't register in the moment. nothing did. and he didn't have any time to fix it, because you were already pulling away from him. he missed the warmth, staring down at your shivering form with shocked eyes. he just kissed you- well, you kissed him. definitely not how he imagined it, all all.

without a second thought, he pulled you close and repeated your actions, this time with a tad bit of eagerness. it was short, but it told everything words could not. you felt the love radiating off of him, all his previous sadness disappearing. you pulled back, pecking his cheek as you laid your head on his chest, shivering. his head rested on your shoulder as you cuddled into him, a bright smile on your pink face. nothing needed to be said, and neither of you wanted to say anything either. it was understood; 'this changes everything, but not a lot because it was always meant to be.'

the moment was just how it was supposed to be, even if it wasn't intended.
