THE COLD BREEZE RUFFLED THE SLEEVES OF YOUR SWEATER, nipping at the exposed skin of your hands and face, tinting your skin a light red. You let out a long breath of air, content with breathing in the beautifully fresh, rain-filled air above the cloud cover. below, the town of forks was barely visible, illuminated by sketchy street lamps and occasional house lighting. the sun was setting fast, painting the scene in a gorgeous glow that slowly leaked into a dark blue haze, stars beginning to shine through the clouds.

you smiled as he copied your actions, taking a deep breath. you looked away from the stars towards him, not at all surprised that he was already staring at you. he was perfect, you thought, unconsciously raising your hand to brush his hair back out of his face. he was cold, ice cold like always, but you didn't care. he hummed, closing his eyes for a moment before he rolled over, quickly tackling you in a hug. his cold engulfed you.

"jasper!" you grunted as he basically crushed you, peppering your face with butterfly kisses. you broke out into laughter, trying to shield yourself from him jokingly. his eyes were a warm golden color as he peered down at you, stopping his assault to give you that cheeky smile that you loved so much. sometimes his eyes were different, warmer, darker. your heart surged with emotion and your breath left you, staring up at him with doe eyes.

"i can't help it, when you look at me with all that love," he sighed, breath fanning over your cheek, "i only wish you could feel what i feel for you." he pressed a chaste kiss to your cheek, suddenly looking sad. he frowned, leaning up on his arms to sit up beside you. you followed his action, eyes furrowing in confusion. you turned to sit on your knees, staring up at him with a small doleful gaze. you didn't understand his change in mood.

"i do, every day." it was his turn to look at you with confusion. you grinned, sitting up more as you began to rant, "i do when you pick me up in the morning for school, making sure i have all of my stuff cause i always forget something." he seemed to clue in to your idea and chuckled, his little smirk making your heart flutter.

"i do when you drop me off at my classes or pick me up, even when its wildly out of your way and you're almost late for class," he hummed, "or when you buy me my favorite snacks at school and deliver them with a sweet note." you reached to grab his hand, watching his eyes flick to you with an emotion you couldn't tell, other than suspense.

"i did when you met my family for the first time, and were as respectful and chivalrous as i've ever seen you be, standing there all nervous as my p/g quizzed you to death," you giggled, "i still remember how you almost stuttered when they asked you what your intentions were," remembering how embarrassing it was for you but also how hilarious it was for jasper. how his little southern accent shook at your p/g bizzare and invasive questions.

"i do when you look at me with love, honestly, and i don't think there's many things you could do to change it, because i love you." jasper smiled, a real genuine smile, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles. you didn't know if that's what he needed to hear or not, but his eyes filled with tears. not wanting him to get emotional, you leant forward without even thinking, capturing his lips with your own.

oh yeah, your first kiss together.

probably a thousand different thoughts were going through jasper's mind when you kissed him, but they all stilled. they were replaced with one single thought, you.

he knew it was wrong, that he shouldn't be kissing you, that he should've pulled away immediately so as to not get overwhelmed and risk potentially hurting you, or worse. but he couldn't, because the second your lips were on his, he was done for. so suddenly he was engulfed in your scent surrounding him, making his throat bone dry. he couldn't help leaning into your touch, shivering as your hand rested on the back of his neck. he pulled you closer by the waist, desperately wanting more. his internal battle was unbeknownst to you, as you were just surprised at your own confidence. you couldn't believe you just kissed him.

as your heart beat sped up significantly, jasper paused slightly, feeling an overwhelming urge to bite you. he could suddenly hear the blood flowing through your veins, like it was the only sound in his world. everything else was muffled. he pushed you back until he almost straddled you. his throat ached and his composure was slowly slipping. how come alice hadn't warned him of this! his hands found themselves on your chin, his hold turning slightly aggressive.

fear.

your slight, quivering fingers, and quick jumping heart made him freeze, throwing himself away from you with all the force he had. he flew threw the air, away from you. his throat tightened but slowly stopped burning.

you were scared. scared of him. he was loosing control, he lost control, he almost hurt you. you felt fear, for the first time around him.

he landed with his back against a tree, the old oak groaning as his vampire strength tested its roots. some branches shattered upon sheer impact .you laid frozen, staring at him as he stood against the tree, breathing heavily through his mouth. you weren't sure what to think. how did he...?

"how did you... how...?" you blinked rapidly, watching as he looked away from you with about as much guilt as you needed to know that something else was going on. his first step sent your mind whirling. your heart was racing, recovering from both making out with jasper but also watching him move quicker than flash. you allowed him to approach, yet he seemed hesitant.

"y/n. i have some explaining to do." as he neared, you looked into his eyes, those of which were fluctuating rapidly between gold and a dark obsidian. at first, your heart jumped, but it didn't surprise you as much as he thought it would, as you thought it would. there were signs, weird things, things that no normal person would have. ice cold skin, freezing to the touch.

never eating, ever. you had not once seen jasper or his family eat anything, even on your trip to their house, they prepared food for you, but didn't eat themselves.

his eyes, always changing color. abnormal in the first place for not being contacts.

"what explaining? what's going on, jasper?" you looked up at him, feeling exhausted all of a sudden.

"my family and i, we aren't... normal, per se." he sat beside you, his eyes finally landing on a solid dark gold, meaning whatever struggle he had before was rectified. even with his stunt, his presence was comforting.

"normal?" you couldn't even form a reasonable question, your words barely above a whisper, finding all your words gone. after a long beat of silence that had your mind stilling, you looked up at him, watching his emotions shift as he tried to form an answer.

"we aren't human."

fear is a normal emotion, you tried to convince yourself. fear can educate you, change your opinions, force options you never had before. fear is normal, and rational when the humor of the words died out from under you. fear would be the obvious response to his words, you figured. fear would be logical, the self-sufficient way.

but it was jasper, sitting in front of you. jasper, who drove you home when it was barely even dark to make sure you were safe. jasper, who guided you through the hallways when you were anxious. jasper, who protected you from his sister's rude comments, who made you feel assured and safe. jasper who always made you feel oddly protected, like no harm could come to you.

sweet jasper who had nothing but admiration for you, a silly love-sick puppy when it came to anything that you needed. who doted on you anytime. who liked history and calculus, and was smarter than anyone you knew, was always your partner in trivia because he was so good. jasper who wore the softest dress shirts that you had no problem stealing. jasper who tolerated alice and your rants when you two spoke.

you knew him. or, you thought so.

"we're vampires. i'm a vampire." adrenaline died in you, and you felt eerily calm. part of you felt like you knew that. part of you felt like you denied the inevitable, ignored the signs, tested the barriers that he didn't know you knew. you figured that it was your survival instinct fighting your love for him. your love won, of course, but for what?

"what are you doing here, jasper?" he seemed shocked by your response, but a small smile crossed his face.

"why family and i travel around a lot. see, the funny thing is we don't age-"

"no! what are you doing here, jasper?" you looked up at him, tears in your eyes. he winced at your appearance, his hand automatically going to wipe your tears away, but he hesitated as you moved backwards. you waited for his response. his composure crumbled at the sight of your sobs.

"i am sitting beside the girl i love," he tried, weakly. you broke down further.

"are you going to kill me?" you forced yourself to ask, sadness turning into a burning rage. your fight or flight was kicking in, and you desperately wanted to fight. how dare he!?

"no! never! never, ever, darlin'." suddenly he was close, so close that your breath hitched and your heart forgot it job, skipping a beat. the same feeling that always encompasses you when he is near, hit you full force. jasper hale, the man of your dreams. the boy who has your heart.

"i would never hurt you. i'm sorry that i got too carried away. i'll tell you everything, anything you want to know, it's yours. anything. if you promise not to leave, promise not to be scared," he comforted, almost begging as he raised a gentle hand to comb through your hair. despite not wanting to, you relaxed. giving him a look of acceptance, he backed away slightly, tearing his eyes from yours to gaze at the trees around you. the lights of forks were slowly turning off, the darkness reaching its peak. the only light around was from the moon above.

"my family, we are all actually adopted, just like the rumors at school," he started, a small smile tugging up at the corner of his lips, one which you copied without realizing.

"we are fast, agile, strong, and can do things that no other can. we are top predators, designed to blend in to human life."

"most of us were turned by carlisle, my adoptive dad, at different points in time, and for different reasons," he hesitated, "i wasn't turned by him, i was turned by someone else." his eyes turned downcast, a look that you had seen before sometimes, typically when he would zone out. you connected the pieces now, knowing he was thinking about his life.

"i was 19 when i became a vampire. it was 1863, mid way into the american civil war. i was the youngest major in the texas cavalry." he smirked, looking up suddenly. you rolled your eyes, remembering all the help he gave you in history, especially the civil war. he had lived through it. now you knew where he had gotten his accent from, then. despite the hounding questions you had appearing more than being answered, you gave him some time to explain.

"i was turned by a vampire named maria. she used me in order to built an army, the likes of which were the worst you'd ever seen," just like before, his smile disappeared, and you found yourself reaching out to take his hand. he rubbed his thumb over your knuckles, intertwining your hands.

"newborns, they were called; newly created vampires with heightened strength and senses, fueled by the blood that still flowed through their veins. they were scary, intense, dangerous, and had a thirst for blood. maria needed my help controlling them, and so i was in charge of managing their progress, leading battles against other rising territories." you could almost picture it, the way he was explaining it. pictures of newborn vampires flew through your brain, bloodsucking monsters with dead eyes and sharp fangs. you looked up at jasper instead.

"i had the toughest job. if one of them wasn't making progress, or didn't fall into line with maria's teachings, i had the job of disposing of them." tears welled up in your eyes, watching the way he shuddered and closed his eyes. you hugged your jacket closer to yourself.

"it wasn't an easy life, but i had the chance to leave, so i did. i travelled for a while, never truly finding a place to live, never finding anyone i fit in with," his eyes brightened, "well, until i met alice. she found me, and together we found carlisle and the rest of the family." he finished, gaging your reaction.

"what is being a vampire like?" you asked out of plain curiosity.

he seemed surprised at your question, but smiled nonetheless, "boring. you're frozen at the year you were turned, and years and years go by in a blur. it leaves you with much time to learn new things, languages, instruments, history. but it takes a lot out of you. we can't live anywhere for long, people get suspicious that you don't age. i'm destined to repeat highschool forever." he groaned and you winced.

"you cannot sleep, eat, breathe, and the overall, most important thing in your life. you have a constant, irresistible craving for human blood." he could tell that that wasn't what you wanted to hear, as you tensed up, so he quickly recovered.

"my family and i like to call ourselves vegetarians. we don't drink human blood, just animals." you felt a breath leave you that you didn't know you held. it seemed to be the question that was lingering over your head for minutes.

"maybe you should start with that next time," you choked, making jasper laugh. he brought you closer, leaning his head against your shoulder, looking over the scene below him.

"i told you i would never hurt you," he breathed, "there's a good part, a part that every vampire longs for their entire life. to find one's mate. a soul mate, in human terms. someone who is your perfect match, someone who holds you together." your heart sped up, butterflies exploding in your stomach as he leant down to press a chaste kiss to your cheek, rubbing his nose with yours.

"someone who you would kill for, lay down your own life to protect theirs. you would choose this person over anyone else in your life. someone with the upmost importance." he grinned, his fingers pulling your chin to face him. his heavy eyes made your breath catch for the thousandth time.

"oh yeah? have you found that person?"

"yeah, i have," he huffed, "and i have waited far to long to do this," he leant down and kissed you, a slow, passionate kiss full of love, all the care in the world, and for the first time in a while, you felt calm. well and truly calm. he pulled back, to give you a cheeky smile, "and i will never stop doing that until the day i die."

"𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞."

[authors note]

Damn that was a long chapter. Took me a while and I'm DEFINITELY going to go back and edit a lot later, but i wanted to get this out.

Peep the realistic reaction to the vampire reveal??? I never liked how accepting bella was even though edward was literally telling her he wanted to murder her????

so i made jaspy very reassuring, and i think i had a good balance of the oc's inherent 'mate love' and fear of the unknown.
