YOU GENERALLY CAME ACROSS AS AN APPROACHABLE, friendly person. you always got along with all the groups in school, but never stayed to one. you preferred floating around, hanging out with people as it happened. but out of all the people in school, you really got along with district five. the 'losers', the weirdos. not a lot of kids hung out with them, mostly because of their out-of-school reputation. lets just say that they weren't the best hockey players in the league. but they were good people. a little weird, but good.

they quickly accepted you into their group. you hung out with averman and connie mostly, occasionally running around town with charlie and his followers (although they often pulled disgusting pranks.) you went to their games even though most of the time they lost. until, coach bombay showed up. you watched the practices.

though there was one person in district five- the ducks, that never spoke to you. in fact, he would go out of his way to blatantly avoid you. why? you didn't know.

fulton reed.

one of the newer members of the ducks, fulton was, as expected a bit quiet. it took some time for the team to warm up to him, as he was tall and built like a twelfth grader, but he had serious skills for hockey. you figured he never really had friends because of how intimidating he was, but he actually was quite nice. to everyone else.

previously, he had no real reason to speak with you, as he was just another kid on the streets, or in the hall. but now, as he joined the team as a enforcer/secret weapon, you figured he would at least introduce himself. you were basically an honorary member of the ducks, and hung out every day with them, but he still ignored you. he seemed to immediately stop talking when you walked into the room. he would turn away, avoid you. but the weirdest thing, was charlie and jesse would always laugh.

it hurt. but you tried not to take it too seriously. maybe he was just a shy person?

(a/n pfft)

but one day, you had enough. the team was teaching fulton how to skate by rollerblading around town. luckily, you could come along because you had picked up the skill years prior with your best friend. after complaining about it to connie for ages, she told you to go up to him. so you figured it the best time to do it, as he will be at the back of the pack. all you needed to do was catch him off guard, which would be easier said than done, as he was quite frantically scanning his surroundings for people he could crash into.

you trailed slightly behind everyone with averman, trying to blend in with the crowds behind the socially awkward boy. when you told les your plan, he immediately began laughing but refused to tell you why, leaving you extremely confused. obviously they all knew something that you didn't, and you were determined to find out what it was. maybe fulton reed hated your guts. but then again, why would your best friends be so nice to him then, if he openly hated you?

finally, fulton seperated from coach bombay, and you quickly made your entrance, skating up beside him.

"hey, fulton." you calmly smiled, but obviously you scared the life out of him, as he jumped, almost crashing into the railing of the escalator. wincing at your presence, apparently, he hesitantly turned his head in your direction, nodding his head. still silent. once you were actually in three feet of his space, you noticed how nervous he was. his eyes never once meeting yours, and his cheeks were flushed pink.

"uhm- so, you have been ignoring me for like... a month now. have i done something wrong?" you made sure to ask in a sad tone, so he would feel more obligated to answer you instead of keeping quiet. he cleared his throat, steering to the left to follow the ducks down the halls of the mall they were going through. you copied his actions, keeping your eyes on the path in front of you.

finally, after what felt like a millennium, "no, you haven't. sorry."

his voice actually shocked you. you had heard him speak before. it was always either really deep and intimidating, like when he saved you and the gang from the hawk trio, or full of excitement, like when the ducks officially won their first game. now he sounded tired, or sad. like he was disappointed in himself. you hoped he was, as it wasn't exactly the nicest thing to ignore someone and acknowledge everyone else.

"i don't really care about that anymore, but i am curious why you can't stand me." was your reply. he was silent for a second before he actually looked over at you. then it was your time to be nervous.

now, you hadn't exactly intended to, but in your fury of trying to figure out why fulton never spoke to you, you found yourself watching him more and more. you always got excited when it was his turn to practice his shooting as it was cool, you hung around him even though he didn't speak much, and secretly loved when he would help the ducks out. so, well, you might have sort of started developing feelings for him. figures it was you who fell for someone who never even acknowledged your existence. you should hate him, but you couldn't. despite all of this, you were still hesitant under his gaze.

"i- uh... it's not your fault at all- really. i mean you are a really good person- happy a-and like awesome, so really it's mo-mostly me i guess... uh..." he trailed, being the absolute epitome of awkward.

well that answered almost nothing.

so he thought you were awesome, but avoided you like the plague.

"that doesn't really make sense," you glanced up at him, slowing down slightly. he did the same, until you were standing in an empty hallway in the upper floor of the mall.

fulton was way taller than you. that you noticed when you had to crane your neck up to look at his face. another thing you thought was cute. he ran a hand through his hair, brushing his headband back. obviously he was trying to re-word what he said, and the longer his silence ticked on, the more agitated you got.

"look, if you are trying to tell me you hate me and don't want to talk to me, just say it. it will hurt a lot less than this," you snapped. his eyes instantly found yours, widening frantically as he shook his head, his hands coming up to rest on your arms to stop you from brushing past and walking away.

"no! uh no, actually it's the opposite... of that." you froze at the contact, which made him remove his hands, instead fiddling with the fabric of his longsleeve shirt. if he could look anymore close to having a nervous heart attack. it took a long second for you to understand.

"wait—"

"—yeah, okay? i like you. i understand you don't like me back, i mean i was a total jerk to you just because i was nervous. i don't even deserve to apologize after that." his words were honest, which was a little ego-boosting for you. you paused, trying to wrap your head around it. so the reason he was ignoring you was he was nervous to be around you... and the ducks all knew about it and that's why they were all so amused? connie knew about it? you were sure gonna get her back for that.

makes sense.

"you, are nervous, around me?" you stared at him with wide eyes, trying to decipher if he was being serious, and he was. he showed no sign of lying, or making a joke which was a good sign. he nodded, which made you blink, taking a deep breath.

"wow. okay. fulton likes me," you rambled aloud, rocking back and fourth on your heels. it had never happened before that someone you had a crush on had actually liked you back, so it was a lot to process. now what?

"cool," you finally decided to respond, flashing him a confident smile. it seemed like all the tense air was replaced by casual, calm.

"i like you too, uh, do you maybe wanna skate back to the arena together? i'm sure the others will bug us though." he seemed shocked at your answer for a second, his blush doubling in color before he nodded, nervously smiling. in a burst of confidence, you took his hand. he did not complain, and laced your fingers, starting your trek back.

[half edited]

Well everyone else but you did, reader ;)

I'll be the first one to say this sucks. Lately I've had a hard time writing romance... is that common? I used to write it almost exclusively and never be able to write sad/angst. Now it's the opposite. Maybe I'm just supposed to be forever alone even in my writing. What a tragedy that would be lol

And it's kinda hard cause they're so young in the movies and like, when I was like 11, 12, 13, I was most certainly not confessing my love to someone... maybe through like papers at lunch time with:

i like you, do you like me, circle yes no or maybe

Anyways, thank you for requesting, and I'm soooo sorry it took so long XD

Little miss writers block is in town and she is bunking with me in my room, so that's fun 😬
