Augustine Madden was looking out the window of her mom's car as the family of three passed by the 'welcome to cousin!' sign.
Every year she and her family visited the beach for the perfect summer, and trust me; it was the perfect summer. She could feel the excitement bubbling in her stomach as they drove into the town. Her heart was beating so fast as her mother took the last turn into their home. August smiled to herself as Taylor swift filled her ears and her mom parked outside the house.
It was nine o'clock and no one should have to be awake that early on summer break, but this was the only time August would allow herself to be up before noon this summer. She unlocked her phone, seeing multiple text messages from Susannah and Olivia asking when she would be getting there.
Susanna never had girls, only two sons. So, she liked to think of Isobel - belly - and August as her two daughters. It's not that they minded, truth be told, they loved it. Well, August did. She couldn't speak for Belly, but she loved every bit of attention she got from the woman. She loved her own mother dearly, more than anyone in the world, but Susannah would always have a spot in her heart that no one could ever replace.
Her smile grew brighter as she paused her music, took out her earbuds and practically flug herself out of the car. There was just something different about the air in cousins. She spun around a few times until she became dizzy and had to stop. Diana laughed at her daughter, while Jayden rolled his eyes at his overly dramatic twin sister.
She grabbed her suitcase out of the car, not waiting a second before taking the keys from Diana and struggling to open the door. Cursing underneath her breath as Jayden laughed at her, while taking his and his mom's suitcases from the car. Finally, she threw open the door and kicked off her shoes so her mom didn't yell at her about wearing shoes in the house. She threw her hands above her head and one again spun around. She just loved this house and the people and the homey feeling being back here brought.
"You're so dramatic, doll." Diana said, walking in the house and kissing her daughter on the head.
August smiled brightly, "But it's summer!" She watched as Jayden walked in and signalled to the stairs, which could only mean one thing. They both began to laugh, while Diana shook her head and walked into the kitchen, leaving the two teenagers to laugh suspiciously, "Race you!"
They both took off up the stairs, Jayden tried to trip August, which resulted in him falling down. August continued laughing, but ran up the stairs like she was a dog, which actually wasn't intentional, it just - stopped her from falling completely on her ass.
When the Madden/Conklin/Fisher "family" were eleven, they decided to get the dad's drunk, film them and ask them to build them a treehouse, and because they had it on film they couldn't not do it. The treehouse led from August's room straight into Conrad's, which he protested against, I mean the boy made t-shirts saying "Not my room" and wore them for two day's straight, until he finally gave up and realised that August didn't want it either, but that was the only tree that would work. There was a ladder, type of rope that went from August's room into the tree house and the same thing went to Conrad's side.
When the twins made it to August's room, she practically had to tackle him to get away from the 6 foot teddy bear in the corner of her room.
She sucked in a breath as she opened her bedroom window and held onto the rope/ladder for dear life, "Wait until I'm at least halfway across?"
Jayden sent her a reassuring smile, "Always."
"Okay then." She mumbled mostly to herself. It's almost as if she's done it most nights every summer since she was 11, but it still terrified her beyond words. If this was how she was going to die, she would somehow come back to life just to end her own life again.
She slowly crawled across the rope making sure not to fall and to make sure no one saw her, little did she know her mother was looking at her while shaking her head. She felt the rope move, making her screech. It was fine, she was fine. Only a few more feet and she would be okay.
She made it to the window and opened it once she felt Jayden tap her foot. She slid the window open and dived in as if she was James bond, she even posed with a gun. She then signalled for Jayden to dive in. He did the same thing as her, but closed the window to look like no one was there.
"All clear, boss!" He whispered into his shirt, faking a walkie talkie.
She did the same, "Proceed with caution." August mumbled, making her voice deeper while raising an eyebrow.
They both stood up slowly, in sync. August reached over for the door handle and opened it carefully before walking out, still holding her 'gun'. They made it to the stairs, still unknown. August was still in front of Jayden like she was every single year. She walked down and peaked into each room, using her free hand to call him over.
They ran dramatically into the kitchen pretending to shoot everyone in the room and they all played along as they did every year. Though normally the Conklin's are there before them so they make Steven play along
Susanna ran over to them and wrapped her arms around them. August immediately wrapped her arms around her and tucked her head into the crook of the woman's neck.
Susanna's hugs had always been the best, the woman just radiated comfort. She pulled away, ignoring Jayden and taking August's face in her hands. She squealed, "You're so pretty!"
August blushed slightly, pulling her face away from the older woman and saying, "Thank you."
She sent August one last smile before doing the same to Jayden, but making it more "manly"
She suddenly felt someone lift her from the ground, she looked down only to find a mop of blond hair, "Jer!"
He put her down and smiled at the girl, "What the fuck happened to you?"
She gasped, slapping his head, "Nothing happened to me! What about you, huh? Is your hair lighter? Did you dye it?"
When she saw the boy squint his eyes at her and walk over to Jayden who was getting a bro hug from Conrad, she smiled in victory.
August walked over to the group of guys. They all looked over at her, she made eye contact with the boy with mousy hair. He sent her a nod and an awkward smile. What was she expecting? A hug? He stopped hugging her when she was ten, why would he suddenly start up again? I mean, It's not like that's all she had wanted for the past six, nearly seven years.
When she got closer, he stuck up his hand for a high five like he always did. She scoffed before, giving in and high fiving him. Not noticing the mother's looking at each other with a devious smile.
"You're such a little bitch." She mumbled to herself, praying to God no one heard, but of course he heard he was Conrad after all.
"It's good to see you too, Augustine." He chuckled, making her glare at him. She hated when someone used her full name. It made her feel like she was in trouble.
There was then a honk of a horn, meaning the Conklins had arrived.
some chapters may seem very similar to the originals (like this one) but there will be chapters added and chapters completely rewritten.
