"Dean, what did he tell you?"
"He said that he...wanted me to watch out for you..." Dean manages to get out. "...take care of you."
Athena glances up, "But, dad always said that."
"No, this time was different," Dean states. "He said that I had to...save you."
"Save me from what?" Sam asks.
"He just said that I had to save you and nothing else mattered and that if I couldn't, I'd..." Dean's voice gets caught in his throat.
"You'd what, Dean?"
Dean hesitates for a moment. He didn't know if he could even say the words.
"I'd have to kill you."
For a moment, Athena thought that she heard wrong. Kill Sam? She even squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, thinking this was all some sick nightmare. Maybe they were still back at the clinic and her mind was playing tricks on her. She then opens her eyes and she was still outside on the side of the road with her brothers. Dean's body starts to shake as he repeats the words. "He said that I might have to kill you, Sammy."
Athena lets out a sharp breath. It was true.
"Kill me?" Sam's eyes begin to well with tears. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"I don't know."
The feeling of shock quickly turns into rage. "I mean, he must have had some reason for saying it, right?" Sam asks. "Did he know the Demon's plans for me? Am I supposed to go dark side or something?!"
Dean throws up a hand, not having a clue.
"What else did he say, Dean?!"
"Nothing, that's it, I swear," Dean answers.
Sam scoffs, "How could you not have told me this?!"
"Because it was dad, and he begged me not to," Dean says.
Athena scratches the side of her neck and looks at the ground.
"Who cares?! Take some responsibility for yourself, Dean!" Sam points at his brother. "You had no right to keep this from me!"
"You think I wanted this? Huh?" Dean scoffs. "I wish to God he'd never opened his mouth! Then I wouldn't have to walk around with this screaming in my head all day!"
Athena looks between both her brothers. Sam looks away from Dean, his anger growing with every second the truth settled into him. She looks down at her shoes, wanting this argument to be over. But she knew it wasn't going to be over anytime soon.
Dean looks at his little sister and his guilt for her increases. It would just be easier to get this out of the way.
"Athena, your mom didn't abandon you."
Athena stops digging the tip of her shoe into the dirt. She lifts her gaze up and stares at Dean with a confused expression.
Sam's heart drops into his stomach and he turns back to his siblings. "Dean, what are you doing?"
Athena then looks at Sam. "What...?" she looks at Dean. "What are you talking about?"
"Dad, he told me." Dean exhales. "And I told Sam."
Athena opens her mouth, but she closes it. She had no idea what to say. Athena blinks and scratches her wrist. "I don't understand. H-How long have you known? Since the hospital? Is that when dad told you?"
Dean glances away from Athena and her good eye widens. "Longer?" She takes a step back.
"Since dad first took you in."
Athena felt like she was being punched in the gut. A small breath of disbelief escapes her lips, then her chest begins to tighten in a painful manner. Her good eye wells with tears. "I don't understand--you guys said..." she trails off her sentence, thinking back to her past conversations with them. The small details in their movements, their fingers twitching, the quick guilty glances at each other. This entire time.
"This whole time you made me feel like an idiot..." Athena shakes her head and she wipes her tears.
"No, Athena. We were just trying to protect you--"
"Bullshit!"
Sam and Dean flinch at the angry girl.
"You were just trying to protect him." Athena seethes. "Well, he's dead now, and guess what? You have to deal with this anger--not him." she shakes her head. "I never bothered to try and read you guys, because I thought you would tell me the truth. I trusted you!" She tangles her hands into her hair.
Athena pulls her brows together, "What happened to her?" she drops her hands to her side.
Sam and Dean look at each other and that pisses Athena off even more. They would always look at each other and it would not only make Athena feel left out, but it would make her feel like she wasn't important enough to be in the conversation.
"Stop it! Stop looking at each other and leaving me out of everything! Like I'm some incompetent child! Tell me what happened to my mom!" her voice begins to shake.
Sam and Dean look back at the betrayed girl. Sam's eyes soften, "Your mom called him one night and he just left the motel without a word." The middle Winchester starts. Athena quickly looks at Sam, waiting anxiously for the story about her mom. This entire time Athena thought her mother didn't want her. But now she knows that wasn't true.
"He went to go see you and your mom and...a demon was possessing her."
Athena's heart drops into her stomach and her jaw goes slack.
"The demon was going to take you and see if you had any use to it." Sam states.
Athena pinches her brows together, thinking. "Dad thought I could help him kill the Demon that killed your mom." She slightly shakes her head. "Do you think that those things tie in together?"
"I'm sorry, dad said what?"
Athena looks at her brothers and notices their shocked and perplexed expressions. She raises her brows, "You guys didn't know?"
Dean looks at the ground and Sam shakes his head. Athena lets out a small breath, "Huh, guess there was one thing I knew that you guys didn't."
Athena swallows the lump in her throat. "What happened next?" She looks at Sam. "Did dad expel the demon out of her?"
That's when Sam and Dean hesitate. That's when they don't want to tell the story anymore. And Athena noticed that. She shifts and looks between them. "What is it?"
Sam inhales a shaky breath. He couldn't say anymore. Dean felt his big brother instincts kick in and he took over. He slightly opens his mouth. "The demon was expelled from your mothers body, but not before dad, he..." Dean stops for a moment. And tears form in Athena's good eye.
"He stabbed your mom."
Athena's entire body tenses up. Dean glances away from Athena's shaken expression before continuing. "Athena your mom..."
Dean didn't have to finish what he was saying. Because she knew. Just from the guilt-ridden expressions and the way he trailed off his sentence. Sam and Dean were in so much pain telling her this. No wonder they never revealed the truth to her. Athena feels like she's going to be sick.
"My mom's dead?" Athena pulls at the collar of her shirt. She feels like she's burning up. "Dad didn't...he just killed her and took me?"
"He thought that the demon was still in her—"
"He knew how to expel a demon—he knew!" Athena snaps, tears burn in her eyes. She shakes her head. She felt like there was too much in her head. She couldn't register it all.
"How could he do that? He told me that she never wanted me when he took me from her!" Athena softly cries. "He left her to die!" She sits on the ground with her back against the wooden fence. Athena tangles her hands into her curly hair and tries to process the gut wrenching information.
Athena always had some part of her hope that her mother was still alive. She wanted to find her when she got older, but now she couldn't. All her hoping was for nothing. There's no point in having faith anymore.
Dean shakes his head, "I'm really sorry, Athena."
Dean swallows and looks at his two younger siblings. The guilt begins to overwhelm him as the truth drowns both of them. "I'm sorry for telling you both all of this now."
Athena scoffs and rubs her brow bones. "Honestly...you should've told us earlier..." she softly murmurs. She tilts her head to the sky. Did her mom make it into Heaven? Was my mom good? Athena hoped so.
"I need some ibuprofen."
"Let's just go back to the Motel, lay low for a little bit and think?" Dean softly suggests. "It would be safer."
"That way I can make sure that—"
"What?" Sam squints his eyes. "That I don't turn evil?"
"That I don't turn into some kind of killer?" Sam scoffs.
"I never said that—"
"Jeez, you're not careful, you will have to waste me one day, Dean."
"I never said that!" Dean snaps.
"I think I'm gonna be sick." Athena places her head between her knees, still trying to process everything.
"Damn it, guys, this whole this is spinning out of control." Dean starts. "All right, you're immune to some weirdo demon virus, and I don't even know what the hell anymore."
"And now I figure out that dad had some special plans for Athena, I mean—what the fuck?!"
Athena frowns, "What the fuck, indeed..."
"You two are pissed at me and I get it. That's fine, I deserve it."
Sam turns back to Dean with the same look of anger in his eyes.
"But we lay low until we figure out our next move, okay?"
Sam scoffs, "Forget it."
Dean's eyes soften, "Sam, please, man." He nudges Sam to look back at him. "Please."
"Just give me some time." Dean begs. "Give me some time to think, okay? I'm begging you here. Please. Please."
☆
"I can't believe, you actually thought he was gonna stay."
Dean lets out a huff and redials Sam's phone number. Athena keeps her eyes on her math book and shakes her head. "I mean, after what you told him yesterday—"
"Thena, I know, okay? I just..." Dean trails off his sentence and sits on the bed with defeat. He places his hands in his head and stays silent. Athena presses her lips together, "You just...what?"
Dean looks at her with a deadpanned expression. Athena slightly opens her mouth, "Well, you didn't finish your sentence, so I didn't know if—"
"It was for dramatic effect."
Athena purses her lips and glances at the ceiling. "Oh. Well, just say that next time." She looks back at her notebook.
Dean pulls his brows together. "Why aren't you freaking out?"
Athena softly hums, "Oh. Because Sam told me he was leaving."
Dean stops for a moment, thinking he didn't hear her correctly. "I'm sorry?"
"Sam told me he was leaving."
"And you let him?!"
Athena inhales a deep breath and continues writing, while not answering. Dean frowns and closes his eyes. He inhales a deep breath, realizing he raised his voice. He exhales a soft breath, "And you let him?" His voice was now soft.
Athena smiles softly and she spins around to her brother in the office chair with her hands folded. "Yes. He told me he had to find out what you meant by dad saying you had to snuff him out."
"Stop playing GTA!" Dean points at her. Athena rolls her eyes. "He said he would be back."
"You're Damn right he's gonna be back. Because we're going to get him." Dean stands up. "Come on."
"But—"
"No, buts. Let's go."
Athena whines and follows after Dean to the car.
...
"Ellen!"
The woman laughs over the phone, "Hey, pumpkin. How you doing?"
Athena side eyes Dean, "Good, just trying to keep Dean from bursting into tears."
"What? I'm not gonna cry!"
"He's totally gonna cry." She whispers.
"Athena—"
"And that's okay!" Athena turns to Dean with her hand out. "Everyone needs a good cry every now and then."
Dean lets out a deep sigh, "Put the phone on speaker, please."
Athena smirks and clicks the speaker button.
"Hey, Ellen, have you heard from Sam?" Dean asks.
"I have...but he made me promise not to tell you where he is." Ellen says.
"Come on, Ellen, please. Something bad could be going on here, and I swore I'd look after that kid." Dean explains.
"Now, Dean, they say you can't protect your loved ones forever." Ellen says in an advisory tone.
Athena wags her finger at Dean while Ellen speaks. Ellen huffs, "Well, I say screw that. What else is family for?"
Athena smiles.
"He's in Lafayette, Indiana."
"Thank you, Ellen!" Athena waves at the phone even though Ellen couldn't see her.
"I'm glad I could help, darling." Ellen says. "Take care."
Athena ends the phone call and sputters her lips. "Do you realize that we are always in Indiana?" She looks at Dean.
Dean raises his brows in agreeance. "Yeah, I mean, some people don't even know Indiana is a state."
Athena quickly looks at Dean. "That's not true."
"It is too true." Dean nods.
Athena squints her eye at Dean and slowly looks away from him, unconvinced.
The sun has now risen and the two siblings went to the first Motel in the phone book. And bingo, that's where Sam was.
"Oh, thank god you're okay." Dean exhales.
Athena squints her good eye and as soon as Sam walks away, a woman comes into view.
"Oh, you're better than okay." A smile forms on Dean's lips. "Sam, you sly dog."
Athena frowns, "Calling someone a dog isn't nice."
"I didn't mean it like that." Dean says.
"Well, then, how did you mean it?" Athena asks.
Dean tilts his head up, thinking. "It's a saying for when someone is being cool but also mischievous."
Athena slightly opens her mouth. "Ohhhh...nice." She then looks at the window and pulls her brows together. "But what does that have to do with Sam and that girl?"
Dean's jaw clenches. He didn't want to explain that to his little sister. "Uh....I...I don't know...?" He then looks back at the window as well.
Silence fills the car and Dean thinks for a moment. He turns to Athena and sees her flipping through a comic book.
"So..."
"So...?" Athena looks at him.
"Why didn't you go with Sam?" Dean asks. "You had every right to after what I told you."
Athena looks up from her comic book. "I know."
Dean stays silent and Athena sighs.
"You do realize that you both kept that secret, right?" Athena questions. "Either way, I'd be disappointed with both of you. Doesn't matter who I stayed with."
Athena shrugs, "It was just easier staying with you. Because...who knows if Sam would actually come back."
Dean pulls his brows together and he looks at Athena. He knew that she was thinking about when Sam left for college. Athena forgave Sam for that and realized that he needed to leave. But, she also knew that all of them staying together wasn't a for sure thing. There was a point in their lives when they would go their separate ways, it was only a matter of time...
"Did you know her name?" Athena asks. "My mom?"
Dean sucks in a breath, "No, I'm sorry, Athena."
Athena bites the inside of her cheek. She then shrugs a shoulder. "Kind of suspected it..." she gnaws on her lower lip. Dean's eyes soften, "If you...ever need help finding things out about her. I've got your back, all right?"
It wasn't much. But it still made a small smile form on Athena's lips. It was an appreciative smile. "Thanks, Dean."
Dean presses his lips into a smile and places a hand on top of Athena's head. The sound of gunshots firing off near the area, echoes outside of the car. Athena flinches and a scream of shock comes from her lips. Dean's heart jumps into his throat but he shields Athena with his body. "Stay down!"
Dean notices that the bullets weren't coming anywhere near him and Athena. He lifts his head up and looks around. His eyes land on the motel room Sam was in and his face drops. "Shit, shit, shit!"
"Dean, what's—"
"Stay here, Athena. Do not move." Dean's voice was firm.
Athena lifts her head and watches Dean leave the car. He runs away from the motel and towards another building across from it. The youngest Winchester looks over at the motel Sam was in and she notices the windows were shattered. "Oh, shit!"
The bullets soon stop and Athena gnaws on her lower lip. Should I stay or should I go?
Athena then giggles, "That's a good song." She shakes her head. "Focus."
Athena quickly gets out of the car and sprints over to the motel room. She uses both fists and knocks on the door. The faster she knocks, the faster that person would come to the door.
She was right.
The door swings open and Sam looks at the little girl. "Athena?!" He looks around. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Athena holds her hands out, "Oh, you know, just wanted to take a walk. Saw you through the window and decided to shoot at you." She then throws her arms in the air. "Dean and I tracked you down—of course!"
Sam purses his lips, "That was really good sarcasm."
Athena then smiles, "Why, thank you."
"Sam, who is it?"
Athena looks at the woman and holds hand up. "Hello!"
"H-Hi." Ava shakily speaks. "Do you know where the shooter went?"
Athena raises her brows, "Oh, no. That's why I'm here." She then looks at Sam. "Dean went to find the shooter but he's not back yet."
Sam's eyes blow wide, "Wait, what?! Where did he go?"
Athena points at the building across the tall building a few blocks away from them. Athena, Ava, and Sam quickly made their way over to the top of the building; only to see no one.
"Wait, I don't understand." Ava speaks. "Shouldn't we be talking to the cops?"
Athena then laughs, "Cops. Help. That's funny."
Ava blinks at the young girl.
"Trust us, they wouldn't do us much good." Sam supports what Athena was saying. He crouches down and picks up one of the shell casings off the roof of the building. "These are .223 Caliber—subsonic rounds."
"The guy must have a suppressor on the rifle."
Ava exchanges a look with Athena and the now 12 year old shrugs. The woman throws her arms up, "Dude, who are you?"
Sam slightly opens his mouth. "Uh, I just—I just watch a lot of T.J. Hooker."
Sam digs into his pocket and pulls his phone out.
"Who are you calling?"
"My brother. Seeing if he'll answer." Sam places the phone against his ear.
Dean soon picks up the phone. He and Sam talk for about two minutes before he hangs up. Sam looks at his phone and Athena tilts her head. "What's wrong? Where's Dean?"
Sam looks at his sister. "Dean's in trouble." He says.
Ava pulls her brows together, "What?"
"Someone's got a gun on him." Sam states.
Athena's jaw goes slack, "Funkytown?"
Sam nods his head. Ava deadpans and Sam slightly opens his mouth. "Well, he thought of it. It's kind of a long story."
Athena grabs the notepad from Sam's hand. "This is the address he's at?"
"Yeah."
"You know, it's probably a trap, right?" Athena raises her brows.
Sam softly huffs, "When is it not a trap?"
☆
"I don't think I should leave."
Athena frowns, "I think you should."
"Be nice." Sam voices.
Athena raises her brows, "But I am!" Sam looks at the girl with a raised brow. She sags her shoulders and looks at Ava. "We don't want you in harm's way, Miss Ava. So, it's best if you just leave."
"Well, what about you guys?" Ava questions.
"Harm's way doesn't really bother me." Sam says.
"It bothers me!" Athena holds a hand up. "I'm just used to it."
"No, but you are walking right into my vision." Ava says. "I mean, this is how you die."
"It doesn't matter."
"Well, hold on a second." Athena holds her pointer finger up. "It does matter. We don't need you dying, but we also have to go save our brother." She looks at Ava. "So, we're going."
"Maybe I can help." Ava says.
"You've done all you can." Sam replies. "Just—just go back to your fiancé."
"Are you sure?" Ava asks. She looks at Sam, then the 11 year old.
They walk Ava to her car. Athena rolls her good eye and looks at Sam. Was she really that determined to help? If Athena was her, she would've been gone already.
"Yes, I'm sure. Go home, Ava." Sam opens the car door for her. "You'll be safe there."
"Well, just...promise me you'll call, then." Ava looks at Sam. "When you get your brother, just to let me know that everything's all right."
Sam smirks softly, "I promise."
"Make sure it's not a pinky promise right, Sammy?" Athena nudges Sam's leg. He sighs and looks at the girl, "Dude—"
"I'm kidding—I swear, I'm over it." Athena holds up a hand and crosses her heart. "I love you."
Sam's deadpanned expression changes to a smiling one. "I love you too." He pulls her into a side hug. "And I'll call you when we find out brother."
Ava nods her head and waves her hand before driving down the street. Athena sighs, "So, obviously we're walking into a trap. But the question is...how do we maneuver around said trap?"
Sam purses his lips and thinks by tilting his head side to side. "Well, this person has to be some kind of skilled fighter, right?"
"And he tracked you down to blow your head off." Athena folds her arms with a crease between her brows. "So, he knows who you are. And you most likely pissed him off in the past."
Sam thinks about Athena's words. "So, if we already know we're walking into a trap..."
"The place they have Dean is going to be booby trapped." Athena finishes.
Sam nods head, "When we get there, I want you to—"
"Stay in the car. I know." Athena presses her lips together.
"Actually I was gonna say, I need you to get Dean while I distract this mystery sniper."
Athena raises her brows, "Oh. Okay." She then smiles. "I can do that." She salutes her brother.
"I won't let you down."
Sam's gaze softens and he pulls Athena into his side. "You could never let me down, Thena."
Athena hugs him back with a small smile.
"Now..." Sam separates from the hug and looks at his sister. "Let's go save our brother's ass."
☆
"How's a guy like Sam become a monster?"
Gordon shrugs, "It beats me, but he will—"
"No, you don't know that!" Dean snaps.
Gordon looks over at Dean and clicks his tongue. "I'm surprised at you, Dean."
Dean rolls his head over to Gordon and sends him the most deadliest glare ever. Even though the glare was deadly, there was still a desperation to it.
"Getting all emotional." Gordon huffs. "I had heard you were more of a professional than this."
Dean scoffs.
"Look, let's say you're cruising around in that car if yours, and, uh, you had Little Hitler riding shotgun, right?"
Dean rolls his eyes at the analogy. No way he was comparing his little brother to Hitler—No fucking way.
"Back when he was just some goofy, crappy artist." Gordon continues. "But you knew what he was gonna turn into someday. You'd take him out." He snaps his fingers. "No questions, am I right?"
"That's not Sam." Dean growls.
"Yes, it is. You just can't see it yet." Gordon says. "Dean, it's his destiny."
Dean couldn't believe. He didn't want to believe it. His little siblings were perfect in his eyes, innocent even. And now you're telling him that one them is gonna turn out to be a monster?
No, he wouldn't let that happen.
"Look, I'm sympathetic." Gordon says. "He's your brother. You love the guy. This has got to hurt like hell for you."
Gordon grabs the bandana from his bag and stands up from the chair. "But here's the thing..." he stands behind Dean's chair. He then ties the bandana into Dean's mouth. "...it would have wrecked him, but your dad, if it really came down to it, he would have had the stones to do the right thing here."
"So, you're telling me you're not the man he is?" Gordon asks.
Dean looks at Gordon, his eyes distant. The problem was, is that he was like John. He didn't want to be. He wanted to be better. Dean didn't want it to be too late for him. God, I hope it's not too late for me.
...
Dean hears one explosion, it shakes the entire shack and he flinches. A scream comes from Dean's mouth, despite his mouth being covered.
"Hold on. Not yet..." Gordon whispers. "Let's wait and see."
Dean freezes and he waits. Please, God, no—
Another explosion that was bigger than before goes off. Dean lets out breathless gasps, as if he was the one that was hurt. He couldn't breathe. Tears burn in his eyes and his brain starts to feel fuzzy. Gordon looks at the distraught brother restrained to the chair. "Sorry, Dean." He walks to the back of the shack.
Dean rocks his chair back and forth, trying to break free so he could kill Gordon with his own hands. He wanted to hear Gordon beg for his life to end quickly. Dean wanted Gordon to wish he had died with his sister. The eldest brother's gut twists. What am I gonna tell Athena?
Dean was so deep in his grieving thoughts, he didn't even hear the front door creak open. Athena looks around the shack and sees Gordon in the back, where Sam was. She crouches down and sneaks over to Dean. Athena slips her hand into her pocket and grabs her knife. She flips it open and looks at Dean. Athena tilts her head and blinks when she sees Dean gasping for air. The girl then looks back at the smoking area in the back and her good eye softens. Dean had to go through two explosions thinking that Sam was in them.
Athena places a hand over Dean's arm. His eyes fly open and he focuses on his little sisters comforting smile. Dean pulls his brows together. He tries to speak through his bandana, but it just came out as muffled talk. Athena places a finger over her mouth.
Then Dean notices the voices behind him. He was so busy in his own thoughts, he didn't notice his brother's voice in the background. Athena pulls the bandana off of Dean's mouth and he inhales a shaky breath. "Thena, you're here."
Athena nods her head.
"You're okay?"
Athena raises her brows and hums softly with a nod.
"I heard explosions—"
"That was apart of the plan." Athena raises her brows, a mischievous smile on her lips. "Sam's alive and well..." she then winces when she sees Sam walking over to them. "Okay, well . He's not well, but he's alive!" Athena cuts Dean loose. He presses a hand against the back of Athena's head and pulls her into a warm and shaky hug. Athena smiles softly and pats Dean's back. "I'm okay, Dean—swear."
Dean stands up and hugs Sam. He pulls out of the hug and looks across Sam's bloodied face. Dean's grief and relief switches back to rage. "Son of a bitch..." he turns around and goes to make his way over to where Gordon is.
"Dean, no."
Dean stops and looks at Sam, "I let him live once. I'm not making the same mistake twice."
"Trust us." Athena says. "Gordon's taken care of."
Dean looks between the two and nods his head. Sam lets out an exhausted breath. "Now, can we go please?"
"God yes."
The three siblings walk out of the house. Athena's stomach grumbles, "I want ramen."
Dean frowns, "I could go for some ramen."
"Sam?"
The middle Winchester huffs, "Well—"
A gunshot rings off behind them. The two brothers reach for the youngest Winchester. Athena screams, she slaps her hands over her ears, her brain practically shaking. Even though, she's been around gunshots her entire life, it still wasn't something she was used to. Sam grabs her left arm and Dean grabs her right. They pick her up and sprint through the woods, while Gordon continues to shoot off bullets towards them.
"You call this taken care of?!" Dean shouts.
They both lift Athena and lay her behind the log and lay beside her. Sam and Dean peak over the log at Gordon, while Athena squeezes her eyes shut with her hands still over her ears. She murmurs softly, her entire body feeling overstimulated from the situation.there was so much going on—too much. In her head and in the woods. God, she just wanted it all to stop.
Then the sound of sirens is heard in the distance. Those sirens become louder and the gunshots stop.
"Put your weapons down!"
Athena opens her eyes and takes her hands off her ears. She peaks over the log and watches as Gordon places his hands behind his head and falls to his knees. The cops handcuff Gordon and loo through his car, revealing all his hunter weapons. They push him into the back of the squad car. Dean laughs, "And who came up with this idea?"
"We both did." Sam pulls Athena into his side. Athena gives Sam and Dean a thumbs up with a smile. Even though she was silent, she was still listening to them. She just needed a second to recuperate from all the static going on in her head. The brothers knew that.
And they were patient.
