"are you seriously just gonna ignore me?"

"what? no, i just focus better when i'm not doing two things at once."

"so you can't multitask?"

after humming the same blink-182 song, skipping over verses because i have short term memory, for the 50th time in 5 minutes, i finally turned the sink off, drying my hands with a paper towel.

"that's a really bad habit, y'know."

"what is?" i ask, raising a brow at her.

"you can't multitask? are you serious, greg?" she scoffs.

"i can totally multitask!" i exclaimed, "didn't you hear me humming a while ago? besides, washing dishes is hard."

the 'she', you may be wondering about, is nene. my friend. we've known each other since the 5th grade, she's a nice girl once you get to know her really.

"you have the memory of a fish," she sneered "like, dory, from finding nemo or whatever."

"i thought it was finding dory."

"i'm pretty sure that's the sequel, dingus."

i ball up my paper towel and toss it in the trash can.

"yeah, but dory's in both movies right?—"

"never mind that," she interjected, "are you going to the dance friday?"

"we have a dance friday?"

"yeah, you idiot, there are posters for it all over school. the mardi gras one?" she scoffed.

"oh, no. last time we had a dance i hid in the bathrooms and cried."

"yeah, that was in 6th grade." she scorned.

i paused,

"my point still stands."

she rolled her eyes, "god, you're pathetic. anyways, i heard there was a new transfer student coming to our school. two, actually."

"really?" i asked, raising my eyebrows. "who?"

nene glared at me like i had forgotten my own name, "i don't know? that's why i said 'new students', you oughta think i would've told you who if i knew who."

"oh." i paused, "when are they coming?"

"like, tomorrow. monday."

i raise my eyebrows again, and nod.

"can't wait to meet them." i grin.

"you mean admire them from a distance? we both know damn well your ass is not gonna approach two totally, unknown strangers."

"oh," i sighed "yeah..."

"whatever. wanna make a tt together?"

my eyes widen slightly, "a titty?"

"no, stupid, a tiktok. y'know, tee-tee."

"ohh, no, no. i don't do tiktok. last thing i need is my sister bullying me for being a stiff and awkward dancer." i snorted.

"doesn't she already do that?"

"whatever." i rolled my eyes and shunned her, "still, i'm not doing a tiktok with you. what if people from our school find it?"

she shrugged, "fair enough."

there was a moment of silence

"wanna go on a walk?" i asked, raising my eyebrows.

"what am i, a dog?"

"that doesn't answer my question. do you?"

"fine." she huffed.

we got on our coats, and headed out the front door.

we traversed the sidewalk, a few twigs and leaves crunching under our feet.

"i love that sound." i smiled, stepping on a fallen leaf.

"it's whatever." nene shrugged.

"hey, look at that," she pointed to the house a few homes down from mine. "looks like someone moved in there."

i furrow my brows and turned my attention to where she was pointing.

for a couple of months, the house that was a few doors down had been left vacant, but the for sale sign was gone now. someone must've moved in, like nene said.

"what if a cute boy's moved in?" she giggled.

"yeah, what if." i said, trying to peer through the house's windows.

not too shortly after, someone had stepped outside the front door.

a boy (probably) our age, tall and lanky, pale skin and blonde hair, wearing an 'army' shirt.

"oh, wow, he's.." nene trailed off, looking somewhat disgusted, it was hard to tell.
"interesting!" she said with a fake smile. "he looks like, the grasshopper from james and the giant peach.."

my jaw hung open for a bit as i watched him retrieve a box from a movers truck.
"no he doesn't! besides, if anything that's a compliment, the grasshopper is hot." i crossed my arms and frowned.

"you cannot be serious right now." she said, looking at me with an equally shocked expression.

we looked back at the house, and the boy was gone.

"i'm surprised he didn't get crushed by the box."

"nene!" i chuckled out of pure shock, "that's so mean!"

"i know." she smirked.

"let's just.. go back to my house.."

we arrived back at my house, flopping down on the couch. i set up my amazon echo, getting my spotify ready.

"let's listen to lana del ray." nene said.

"no, let's listen to, uh, radiohead."

"no, wait, how about melanie martinez." she said, raising her brows.

"weezer."

"taylor swift."

"björk!"

"megan thee stallion!"

i paused,

"tv girl."

she sighed, "fine, we can listen to tv girl. you and your stupid depressed music."

"don't you literally listen to mitski?"

she rolled her eyes, "don't even."

i smiled a bit, and the sound of tv girl's 'who really cares' filled the air. relaxing and somber.
