There are Number of Problems with Clay Jensen
"Justin and I talked Clay down, then they both left." Mia finishes explaining.
"And if you hadn't been there to talk him down?" The Officer asks.
Mia inhales, "Clay wouldn't have hurt Bryce...Justin and I were more worried about the fact that he would've hurt himself." Mia answers.
"So, your brother's life wasn't a top priority for you?" He asks.
"I never said that we knew Clay wasn't going to hurt Bryce--"
"Right, so is that why he came to your house a few weeks later and threatened to kill him?" The Officer cuts her off. Mia shakes her head, "I...I don't know what happened that night, I wasn't there..." Mia says.
"Was Clay Jensen going to hurt you and your brother?" The Officer asks again.
Mia covers her face in frustration, "Clay would never hurt anyone." Mia burns her eyes into the Officers.
"Really? Because this..." The Officer points at the video of Clay aiming the gun at Bryce.
"And your face, are saying something completely different."
Mia's jaw tightens. "Have you ever...threatened your brother's life?" He asks.
Mia throws her hands up and they fall onto the table. "Of course, he's my brother. What siblings don't threaten each other?" Mia questions.
The Officer doesn't reply and Mia rolls her eyes. "I can't believe you're still on this...you really think Clay and I 'Bonnie and Clyded' it up?" Mia asks. The Officer stays quiet and her eyes widen. "You think Clay and I 'Bonnie and Clyded' it up..." She says quietly.
"Mia--"
"You're insane! What motive could I have?! What motive could Clay have?!" Mia shouts.
"The fact that Bryce raped your best friend; the girl you loved, he got away with it! And you never got justice for John!" He says back to her.
Mia's face goes slack, and it feels like she's been punched in the stomach. "H-H-How did you, know that...no one knows that except certain--"
"Your father paid off the whole station, every Officer individually." The Officer explains.
Mia licks her lips, "And you guys took the money?" Mia asks.
"I'm sorry, there was nothing we could do." He states.
"You could've...you could've...done more! Not take the money!" Mia shouts back at him.
The Officer sighs, "I'm sorry, Mia. But this isn't why we're here today. We need to talk about--"
"Listen to me, listen to me!" Mia scoots her chair forward and she burns her eyes into his. "Clay...he didn't do this, believe me!" She says.
"He would never hurt Bryce, he wouldn't--"
"How do you know?" He asks.
Mia rolls her lips into her mouth. "Because, he loves me...and he hated Bryce, but he knows that would hurt me," Mia says quietly.
"You think he really cares about you?" The Officer asks.
Mia looks down at her phone with the map on it as she walks through the grass in her converse. Her mouth twitches, She sees the caller I.D. pop up and she answers. "Clay? I got the coordinates, but..." Mia looks around at the empty grass area.
"Well...it should be right there," Clay says. "You look beautiful by the way, never seen you wear shorts before..." Clay says quietly.
Mia pulls her face back and smiles. She continues to look around, she stops quickly as she spots something behind the bushes. "Uh--what the...hell?" She asks with a laugh mixing in.
She keeps the phone over on her ear as she walks behind the bushes. She sees a picnic set up on the grass, with burger, fries, and cups of soda.
The blonde girl smiles softly, "Clay...what is this?" Mia asks with a chuckle. Clay raises his hands and presses his lips together.
"Do you remember when you first came back to school after you...overdosed?" Clay asks cautiously.
Mia nods her head and inhales, "How could I forget?" She chuckles nervously.
"Well, you told me. If I ever wanted to make it up to you...I could buy you--"
"Burgers and fries." They both say at the same time. Mia laughs and walks over to him. Both of them sit down on the blanket. "And also...I think that we could totally count this as our first date." He says.
Mia looks up at him with a small smile. "What are you talking about?" She asks.
"Last time, when we were at Monet's I really screwed up and shut down us being on a date...and I feel so shitty about that," Clay says to her.
Mia's small smile grows. "I'm sorry." He says in a soft tone.
Mia kisses his knuckles. "You don't have to apologize, silly..." Mia says. "Besides, I'm just glad that we're finally here...together..."
Clay smiles, Mia looks down at his lips and kisses him. Clay kisses her back. They separate and Mia presses her forehead against his. "I think our fries are getting cold..." Clay whispers.
Mia snickers and looks down at the food. "Okay, okay..." Mia nods her head. They both grab their food, eat, laugh, and throw food at each other.
Mia hears the door open and she sees Clay's mom. "Uh--Mrs. Jensen?" She asks.
"We're done here!" Lainie shouts.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Jensen, but Mrs. Walker gave us consent to do this--"
"But did Mia?" She asks, she looks at Mia.
"Mrs--"
"Unless you're making an arrest for any of these kids, then you can't keep them here and interrogate them!" Lainie raises her voice.
Lainie looks at Mia, once again. Mia understood, she quickly gets up and walks out of the room. She sees Clay and Justin standing there. "Uh--thank you, Mrs. Jensen...you really didn't have to do this..." Mia says.
Lainie turns to Mia, "Are you okay?" She asks her. Mia stops walking and looks down at her shoes. "I...I'm okay...y'know..." Mia says.
Her phone rings and Mia quickly answers it. "H-Hello--"
"Mia?" The angry voice questions.
Mia closes her eyes. "Oh...mom...hey, what's--"
"You're at the police station?! What the hell?" Nora questions.
"Yeah..." Mia looks at Justin, Clay, and Lainie with a nervous look.
"You were there, the day Clay Jensen pulled a gun on Bryce? And you never told me?!" Nora shouts.
"Yeah, I was there of course I was...but...mom nothing happened--" The phone call ends and Mia bites the inside of her cheek. She sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose, the stress building.
"Mia?" Clay questions.
Mia looks at him, "Uh--well...I've got to go, my mom just heard about me being here and...why I'm here..." She says as she exhales.
She puts her phone in her pocket and chuckles. "Thank you, Mrs. Jensen, really," Mia says.
Lainie nods her head and pulls her into a hug. Mia smiles softly, how could she be so open to her after everything her brother did? Mia hugs her back. She hugs Justin, "Good luck." Justin kisses the top of her head.
Mia nods her head, she sniffles and looks at Clay. "You'll call me if you need anything?" Clay asks.
Mia nods her head, "I would...if I wasn't mad at you." She states.
Clay opens his mouth, "Mia, I'm sorry about looking through your mom's things. It's just...they're coming after me, hence...all of this." Clay says.
Mia inhales and nods her head, "I get it...and yes, I will call you." She says with a small smile.
"Kiss, just...kiss," Justin says groaning, becoming impatient with the couple.
Mia's smile grew, she wanted to, but...Clay's mom was right there. "Do you need me to look away?" Lainie asks.
"Mom..." He says, immediately shutting her down.
Mia kisses Clay on the cheek and quickly walks away.
