And Then the Hurricane Hit
Mia paces her room, this was her 10th time calling Clay. Yes, that may have been a bit crazy, but you know what's also crazy? Running away from the cops when you're not guilty! Her door opens and Mia spins around. She looks at her mom and sighs. "Mia, it's time for school. You're gonna be late." She says.
Mia plasters a fake smile on and nods her head. "Okay, thanks mom." She says. Nora closes the door and Mia's smile falls. How could he just leave, after what they talked about yesterday? Did their conversation mean nothing?
Mia grabs her backpack and heads downstairs. She walks out of the house and sighs. She walks over to her car, but stops as soon as she sees Clay standing there.
Mia looks at around and walks over to him. "Mia--"
"Jesus Clay!Mia questions.
Clay inhales. "After What we just talked about yesterday?" Mia shakes her head. "So that whole. 'It's you and me thing'...was that just bullshit?" She questions, a lump forming in her throat.
Clay shakes his head. "Mia, I meant every word I said. Okay? I just...I have to go, they have too much evidence against me." Clay explains.
Mia presses her tongue against the back of her lower teeth. "I'll go with you." She says with tears in her eyes.
Clay shakes his head, but Mia nods hers. "Clay, we can go right now. Together." Mia states. She places her hands on his cheeks. Clay touches her wrists, "Mia..." Clay says quietly, his voice shaking.
Mia exhales softly, she inhales a shaky breath. "Guess there's no changing your mind." Mia bites the inside of her cheek. Clay leans down and kisses her. Mia inhales as she felt the soft yet passionate kiss overtake her. She kisses him back, and grips his shirt near his waist. They separate and place their foreheads against each other's. "This isn't over." Mia sniffles.
"Most definitely not." Clay whispers.
"I love you, Ocean Eyes." Mia whispers.
"I love you, Ocean Eyes 2.0." Clay chuckles. Clay interlocks their fingers, not wanting to let go.
"Clay...it's okay." Mia reassures him in a gentle voice. "I understand..." She gives him a reassuring nod and a sad smile.
Clay inhales, his hand slowly slipping from hers. He grabs his bag and walks away from her house.
==========
Mia gets to school and sees Tyler on the phone. He didn't know Clay wasn't going to be here. She walks over to him. "Okay, but I mean, I was really hoping you and Mia would be here today." Tyler says.
Mia leans against the lockers. "Luckily for you, I am." She says with a smile. Tyler turns to her and smiles softly.
Mia sees his disappointed expression. "There's this assembly." Tyler says into the phone.
Clay puts his thumb down. "Yeah, it's just...I can't, man. Okay?" Clay says.
Tyler sighs, "Yeah, okay." Tyler replies.
"You're gonna be all right, yeah?" Clay questions.
"Yeah. I just...I was really hoping you'd be here." Tyler says. "For the both of us." Tyler looks at Mia.
She bites the inside of her cheek. She didn't say anything to Clay about the assembly, she wanted him to be there. But she just...didn't. "Today of all days." Tyler adds.
"Why me? What do you mean 'of all days'?" Clay questions.
Tyler looks at Mia and she gives him a small smile. "Because I needed a friend." Tyler answers.
A car honks, Clay turns to look at the car. Contemplating on what to do, "Tyler...Listen, I gotta run, but I'll try, okay?" Clay questions. He ends the call and runs for the car.
Tyler looks down at the phone and slips his phone back into his pocket. "It's okay, Ty. We can do this...together." Mia says, her heart beginning to beat against her chest.
The day Mia was being questioned in court, her dad paid off everyone just to make sure no one said anything about his friend. So no one knew her story, except for people she told and people who were there. But not many people were there that night. But she was going to do it today, and no one was gonna stop her.
==========
"The protest I lead, was an attempt to try and draw attention to the rape culture in boys' sports and throughout our school. And yes, I admit that the way I went about it wasn't perfect. I'm sorry for how it all ended up. I really am." Jessica apologizes to the crowd. "But making mistakes is part of being a survivor. At first, you think you're, like...permanently broken. But then...little by little, you start picking up the pieces and you start realizing what you're making is a mirror. And... the more of those pieces that you put together, the more you start to see yourself. But maybe we can start picking up those pieces of that mirror together, and we can finally see the truth. If you think sexual assault doesn't affect your life, you're wrong. There are survivors all around us. People you care about..." As Jessica continues to talk, Mia notices Tyler shift in his seat.
Mia reaches over to grab his hand and squeezes it gently. "Let them know that you're there to listen. It's time for you to know the survivors in your life. To hear their stories and to know that their voice matters." Jessica says. She sets her hands to her side.
"My name is Jessica Davis, and I'm a survivor." She announces.
"My name is Casey Ford, and I'm a survivor."
"My name is Janelle Martin, and I'm a survivor."
Jessica looks over at Tyler and nods her head. Tyler looks at Jessica, then he looks at Mia and shakes his head. Mia squeezes his hand once again. "It's okay." She whispers.
"My name is Maggie Kim, and I'm a survivor."
The gym doors close, Mia turns and she gasps quietly as she sees Clay. Tyler looks over and sees him as well and in Mia's hand she feels Tyler relax. She looks at him and nods her head. Mia stands up and feels all eyes on her. "My name is Mia Walker...and I'm a survivor." She exhales.
She looks at Tyler and sees him slowly rise to his feet. "My name is Tyler D-Down...and I'm a survivor." He says. Shock fills the room. Tyler and Mia look over at Clay and he nods his head, proud of them.
Mia looks at Jessica and then send each other small smiles. "My name is Ochoa, and I'm a survivor."
"My name is Sarah Stern, and I'm a survivor."
"My name is Robby Corman..." A voice says next to Tyler. They all look at the other boy and Mis smiles softly, Jessica started something good. And she gave everyone the courage to stand up and admit to being survivors. "And I'm a survivor."
"My name is Tanya Brown. I'm a survivor."
Justin looks around the room. He stands up, "My name is Justin Foley...and I'm a survivor." He announces. Mia slightly opens her mouth in shock.
"My name is Stephanie Rodriguez, and I am a goddamn survivor."
Everyone claps, Jessica takes the microphone and steps out from behind the podium. "To those of you who are still seated, I know a lot of you still have stories, but you're not ready to share them yet. And that's okay. When you're ready, we'll listen. And we will continue to fight to make sure that no one is assaulted, harassed or abused at this school. We will not sit down. We will not be quiet. We will not rest until that happens." Jessica finishes her speech. Principal Bolan claps, and every joins in.
"I'm so proud of you guys!" Jessica hugs Tyler and Mia.
Some pulls Jessica aside to talk. Mia looks at Tyler. "That was really brave, Tyler. I'm serious." Mia says, nodding her head.
"Um...hey it's Tyler, right?" A voice questions.
Tyler and Mia turn to see Robby standing in front of them. "Yeah, hey. Um...nice to meet you, Robby." Tyler greets him.
"Thank you for being the first." Robby says. "I mean...first guy to stand up."
"Yeah. I mean...for sure." Tyler replies.
"You think I could be a part of HO, too? Is that...allowed?" Robby inquires.
"Fuck, yeah!" A voice says behind them. Mia turns and sees Casey walking over to them. "It's more than allowed. Everybody's welcome at HO." Casey says, standing beside Mia. "Fucking everybody!" She looks at Tyler and Mia. "Even if some people were dicks to them in the beginning or still. Some people are sorry." Casey says, embarrassed by her actions.
Mia smiles at her, "Some people are sorry, for punching other people at a funeral." Mia presses her lips together. Casey chuckles, "Let's just say it. I'm sorry, Mia. I shouldn't have acted the way that I did. To the both of you." Casey apologizes.
Mia nods her head. "Same here." she says.
Mia spots Clay and she inhales. "Listen, Casey I got to go." Mia says.
Casey nods her head. Mia quickly walks over to Clay. She wraps her arms around his neck and he touches her lower back. "You made it." She says quietly.
She separates from him. Tyler was standing behind Mia. "Listen, I-I've got to take off, but..." Clay looks between the two. "I am so proud of you guys." He says to them.
"Yeah?" Tyler says with a smile. "Thank you."
Justin quickly walks over to the three talking. "Clay, where the fuck have you been?" Justin questions.
"I have to go." Clay says.
Justin looks at Clay with an incredulous expression. "Are you fucking crazy? You can't run." Justin tells him.
"Justin." Jessica walks over to them. "Was that real just then?"
"Yes. Yeah--"
"Clay Jensen!" A voice calls out. Mia turns her head and her eyes widen as she sees the Sheriff and deputies entering the gym. "Clay Jensen. I have warrant for your arrest for the murder of Bryce Walker." The Sheriff walks over to him. "Turn around. Put your hands behind your back."
Tyler steps forward, "Clay I--"
One of the deputies stop Tyler. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." Clay looks at Mia and she shakes her head. "You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will appointed to you by the court." The Sheriff grabs Clay's shoulder and takes him out of the gym. Mia steps forward, but Ani grabs her arm, stopping her.
