Always Waiting for the Next Bad News

Mia wakes up hearing Justin and Clay arguing. She inhales and opens her eyes, "Wow...so do you guys yell like this all the time...or is this specifically for me?" She questions as she runs a hand through her hair.

They both look at the blonde girl and Clay sighs. "Sorry." They both apologize.

Mia looks between the boys. "So...you guys are having a fight, enjoy it...I'm going to the bathroom." She sends them the two-finger salute and heads to the bathroom.

Mia gets dressed and runs a hand through her hair, trying to make it presentable. She brushes her teeth and walks out of the bathroom, she grabs her bag.

"I'll wait for you guys in the car." Mia smiles, she kisses Clay on the lips and quickly sneaks to Clay's car and waits for them.

Mia looks down at her phone, looking at all of her mom's text messages. "What the fuck is her problem? She wanted me gone..." She whispers, setting her phone down.

Mia turns to the side as she sees Clay get in the driver's seat and Justin gets in the back. "Hey--what's...up?" She asks hesitantly.

"I've officially been announced as a person of interest." Clay sighs.

Mia's eyes widen, "What? But, I don't...that makes no sense!" Mia exclaims, barely able to comprehend anything.

"If that's how you feel, guess how I feel?" Clay huffs.

Mia bites the inside of her cheek, this was her mother's doing. She felt it in her fucking bones. Mia rubs her thumb and index finger together with anxiety.

The three roommates get to Monet's. Mia was explaining to her boss why she hasn't been there, Justin was grabbing them all coffees, and Clay was scrolling through his phone with worry.

"Thank you, thank you so much." She hugs her manager and walks away.

She smiles at Justin, "Keeping my job." She whispers.

Justin raises his brows, "That's good, did you tell her the truth?" He asks.

Mia nods her head, "Yeah...I was nervous at first, but...I got it done and she understood." Mia purses her lips.

"I'm proud of you, Em," Justin says. He hands her a cup of coffee. Mia smiles and looks down at her coffee. "Eh, I mean...I'm not that proud of telling my boss that I haven't been coming to work, because I began drinking again..." Mia rambles on.

"Mia..." Justin stops talking as he sees a man harassing Clay. "The fuck?" He growls.

Mia turns to where he was looking and she knits her brows together. "Hey!" She calls out.

She walks over to the man. He looks over at her, "Mia Walker, how does it feel to have your boyfriend being named a person of interest for your brother's murder?" He asks.

Mia chuckles, she leans forward and is inches away from his face. "Get. The fuck. Out." She growls.

"Just enjoying a cup of coffee." He shrugs his shoulders.

"All right, then we'll get the fuck out." Justin states. "If you come in here again, I'll see to it that your coffee is pissed in."

Mia sends the guy an angry glare before following them. "Thanks for the save, guys," Clay says.

"Yeah. What a dick." Justin says.

==========

Mia looks up at him, "Here with you...every step of the way." She says with a nod.

Clay inhales shakily. He holds her hand and she squeezes it. "Thank you..." He whispers as they walk through the halls, ignoring the stares. Mia lets go of Clay's hand as he opens his locker.

"Well, it makes sense, I mean...I found some Oxy in his room, as well. So..." Mia inhales and purses her lips. Clay looks at her. "But...I never did it...that was much harder to get than alcohol." Mia says.

Clay nods his head and looks back into the locker. "Did you...find a sponsor yet?" He asks quietly, peeking at her from his locker.

Mia shrugs her shoulders, "Tried to...no one wants the sister of Bryce Walker as someone they need to watch over." Mia leans her head against the locker.

"It's just, last night...do you really think that you're...bad for me?" He asks hesitantly.

Mia sighs, "I really do, Clay." Mia answers.

Clay scoffs, "Mia, that's not true..." He says quietly. He turns to the side and sees a guy staring at him. The guy looks away and Clay looks back in his locker, obviously angry.

Mia opens her mouth to say something, but someone interrupts her. "Ignore the chatter," Ani says.

Mia turns to her then looks down at her shoes, trying not to shoot her anger at her. "It's pretty loud." Clay states.

"Well, don't talk back," Ani says.

"How would you know, Ani?" Mia questions. Her blue eyes pierced through Ani's eyes. "You've never been the center attention of this shitty school's magnifying glass. It sucks." Mia adds.

"It doesn't matter what you say, it matters how you seem," Ani advises looking from Clay to Mia. "And you seem angry."

"Everyone is angry." Mia snaps.

"Guilty people get angry." Clay adds. "Maybe people who are falsely accused get more angry." Clay states.

"But you're still not sure which one he is..." Mia mumbles.

Ani squints her eyes, "Okay, so who brought you into this conversation?" Ani questions, tired of Mia's background chatter.

"I've been in this conversation since you kissed my boyfriend!" Mia walks towards her. Clay gently grabs her arm and Mia looks back at him. She inhales and slowly exhales, 'This isn't about you.' her inner self thinks.

Mia looks back at Ani as Clay closes his locker. They both begin to walk away, but Clay stops and turns back to Ani. "Oh, and your precious Bryce was doing Oxy," Clay informs her.

Ani squints her eyes, "What makes you think that?" She scoffs.

Mia rolls her eyes, 'She thinks she knows everything about him.'

"Because Justin stole some from his room after the funeral." Clay answers.

Ani looks at him with amusement, she crosses her arms. "Is that what Justin told you? And you believed him?" Ani questions him.

"I believe it of Bryce." Clay states.

Ani's gaze shifts to the angry blonde. "Really?" Ani questions.

Mia tilts her head, "Really." Mia mocks in a high pitched tone. Mia and Clay walk away from the curly-haired girl.

Mia laughs quietly as she enters the room with Clay. The blonde touches the back of Clay's neck and kisses him. Clay closes the door and she presses her back against the door. Clay starts to kiss her neck, she tilts her head to the side and closes her eyes. She slowly opens her eyes and furrows her brows as she sees Justin and Zach throwing grapes. "Huh." She says.

Clay separates from her, "Wh-what...?" He questions. He turns his head to what she was looking at and he furrows his brows as well. "What the hell?" He questions.

The couple walks over to the boys. Justin and Zach look at the couple. "Are you throwing grapes...all over my bed?" Clay questions.

"Well, it's the international semi-finals for the Olympic-qualifying Grape Throwing Competition." Zach explains with a smile on his face.

Mia smiles as well, "What are you even doing here?" Clay questions.

Mia walks over to the bed and grabs some of the grapes. "Are these good?" She questions. Justin nods his head as Zach speaks. Mia eats some of the grapes and smiles. "I'm not leaving until Justin agrees to do football this year." Zach explains.

"He thinks it'd be good for me." Justin says.

Mia nods her head, "It would...wouldn't it?" Mia shrugs as she eats more of the grapes. "These are...really good!" She smiles.

Clay nods his head, "Yeah...it would." Clay agrees.

Zach smiles and he turns to Justin. "They agree with me. Holy shit, Clay and Mia actually agree with me!" Zach laughs.

Zach tries to throw another grape and Clay hits it. "Hey, stop fucking throwing grapes at my bed, okay?" He questions.

Zach and Justin stare at Clay then at Mia. Her eyes widen, "Hey! No--"

Zach and Justin start to throw grapes at the couple. "Hey, that's not funny! Go outside and play!" Clay shouts. Justin throws a fistful of grapes at Clay. "Justin! What the fuck?" Clay questions.

Zach and Justin run out of the room. Clay looks at the door, "You're cleaning this up!" He shouts at them. "Uh-uh!" Zach shouts.

"Nope!" Justin shouts.

Clay sighs and turns back to his bed. He looks at Mia still eating the grapes. "Seriously?" He questions. Mia shrugs her shoulders, she holds a grape out towards him. "Grape?"

Mia walks into the cafeteria with everyone's eyes on Clay. They were looking at him, but they weren't even around him. She exhales and walks over to him. She sits across from him. "Hey..." Mia says with a smile.

Clay smiles softly, "Hey." He says.

"Fuck all of them." She says simply with a shrug. Clay smiles at the girl. "Thank you," Clay says. Mia reaches out and touches his hand.
