CHAPTER THIRTY SIX. QUIDDITCH MATCHES

Today was the first Gryffindor Quidditch match of the season. Excitement filled the air and chatter was ongoing. Evangeline sat with Harry, Hermione, Ginny, and Cleo. The three Quidditch players were dressed in their red and gold jumpers. Cleo and Ginny chatted about the upcoming game whilst Evangeline slathered butter onto her toast.

Harry ate his breakfast whilst Hermione read the newspaper. Ron came into the Great Hall then, clad in his red and gold jumper, a bundle of nerves. He sat down next to Evangeline. In front of him was a plate of toast and eggs. He looked down at it in mild disgust. Evangeline raised her eyebrows at him. "Are you not hungry?" She asked and he shook his head.

"Hm, that's a first," she muttered before taking a bite of her toast. He looked over at Harry and Hermione then.

"I never asked how it went," he said.
"What?" Hermione asked. "Your dinner party," Ron clarified. "Oh, pretty boring actually. Though I think Harry enjoyed dessert," Hermione answered and Evangeline snickered. "Yeah, he definitely did," she added on, taking another bite of her toast.

Harry sent them both looks of annoyance. "Slughorn's having Christmas due, you know? And we're meant to bring someone," Hermione told Ron. The boy furrowed his eyebrows and looked at Evangeline who was taking a sip of her juice. "I assumed that Evangeline had already talked to you about it," Hermione said, sending the girl a look.

"This is the first time I'm hearing of this," Ron replied, looking at Evangeline again and furrowing his eyebrows. "Oh, I forgot all about that," she muttered. Ron rolled his eyes, a small smile coming to his face.

"Ron, would you like to accompany me to Slughorn's Christmas party? It'll be totally boring without you there," she said sweetly. He rolled his eyes again but nodded nonetheless. "Of course I'll go with you," he responded. Evangeline turned to Hermione. "So, who are you bringing?" She asked.

"I asked Aldon if he wanted to go with me," Hermione answered.

Cleo's eyebrows raised as her attention shifted to Hermione, "Like a date?" Hermione bit her lip and nodded. "Well, what did he say?" Ron asked. "He said he'd love to go with me," she replied. Evangeline bounced up and down in excitement. "Finally," she exclaimed. "Oh, shut up," Hermione said with a smile of her own.

Just then, blondie approached the group. She tapped Ron on the shoulder and he turned to her. "Good luck today, Ron," she said before getting more serious. "I know you'll be brilliant," she added. "Uh, thanks," he said and she walked away. Evangeline watched her leave through narrowed eyes before picking up her toast and taking another bite.

"I'm resigning. After today's match, McLaggen can have my spot," Ron said and Evangeline sighed. "Have it your way," Harry said, pushing a cup over to the redhead. "Juice?" Ron picked up the cup.

"Hello, everyone," a voice said from beside Evangeline. She turned to the side to see Luna wearing a large lion hat on her head. Evangeline sent her a smile. "You look dreadful, Ron. Is that why you put something in his cup?" The blonde girl continued.

Evangeline furrowed her eyebrows and looked at Harry. "Is it a tonic?" Luna asked. Harry began putting a vial into his pants pocket. "Liquid luck," Hermione said. Ron looked around the table.

"Don't drink it, Ronald," Evangeline hissed at him. He ignored her words and put the cup to his lips, taking a sip of the juice. He placed the cup down onto the table.

"You could be expelled for that," Hermione said to Harry. "I don't know what you're talking about," he quickly replied. Evangeline looked at Ron as a smile came onto his face. "Come on, Harry. We've got a game to win," the redhead said. He and Harry clasped hands before standing. The two exited the Great Hall with Evangeline staring after them.

"Idiots."

The day's Quidditch match was against Slytherin house, which was why there was so much excitement. The rivalry between Gryffindors and Slytherins was known to all and everyone knew that this game would be good.

Evangeline had never been particularly interested in the sport. It wasn't all that fun to watch. The only time that she would actually go to a game was when Vivian dragged her to them. Speaking of Vivian, the older girl was stood next to Evangeline, clad in green and silver. She was rooting for her house's victory but wanted to hang out with her sister. The two hadn't spent much time with one another lately.

Evangeline shivered in her spot, the freezing winter air biting at her cheeks. She watched as the two teams raced around the pitch, hitting one another and trying to get the Quaffle. Evangeline couldn't help but flinch whenever she saw Ginny or Cleo get slammed into. A Chaser from the Slytherin team was barreling toward Gryffindor's goals. He dodged the team's players left and right and threw the Quaffle to one of the goals.

Ron was quick, though, and blocked the goal before the Quaffle could go in. Evangeline clapped along with the rest of the Gryffindor crowd, though she was still annoyed that he had drank that stupid potion.

Throughout the game, he had continued to block every shot, the Quaffle never once going in. Evangeline shook her head as she clapped. He was doing amazing, or more so, the potion was. She didn't understand why he had drank it. He didn't need it. She rolled her eyes as he cheered.

The Gryffindor Chasers were scoring like crazy. Evangeline felt that they had a win in the bag. As Ron blocked another shot, the Gryffindor crowd began chanting. "Weasley! Weasley! Weasley!" They had repeated over and over. Evangeline smiled slightly, clapping again. He might have cheated, but she couldn't help but feel proud of him.

After the match, Evangeline went looking for Ron. The Gryffindor team had won and everyone was thrilled. There would be a celebratory party in the common room in just ten minutes time. She was wandering down the hallway when she spotted him, sitting alone on a bench.

"Hey, I've been looking for you. Come on, the party'll be starting soon," she said once she was stood in front of him. He stood up and looked at her. "I've actually been meaning to talk to you," he said. Evangeline furrowed her eyebrows. He sounded weird, different. "Okay? What do you want to talk about?" She asked. Ron let out a sigh, "Us."

Evangeline grew confused. "What about us?" She asked. "I've been doing a lot of thinking and I think we should break up," he replied. Evangeline's mouth opened in shock and she stared at him in silence. He didn't look at her, almost as if he were in a rush to get somewhere else. "What?" She finally asked. He sighed, "I just don't have feelings for you anymore."

"What do you mean by 'I don't have feelings for you anymore'?" She said, mocking his voice. "When did this happen?" He shrugged his shoulders.

"You're joking. Please tell me you're joking," she said. "I'm not. Sorry," he said. He didn't sound sorry in the slightest. "Just this morning you were agreeing to go with me to Slughorn's Christmas party and now you're breaking up with me? Where is this coming from?" She said.

"My heart," he replied. She almost laughed. "Your heart?" She asked and he sighed. "I can't continue to be with you when my heart belongs to another," he said. "What the bloody hell are you talking about?" Evangeline almost yelled. Ron just looked at her. "Ronald Bilius Weasley you answer me this instant," she snapped. "I'm in love with Lavender Brown," he said dreamily.

Evangeline blinked and tilted her head to the side in confusion. "Who the bloody hell is Lavender Brown?" She asked.

"The love of my life," he almost yelled. "Sorry, Evangeline," he turned and began walking away. "I hope we can still be friends." Ron walked away, leaving Evangeline standing alone, mouth agape as her brain tried to process what had happened. "What the fuck? What the actual fuck?" She muttered.

Hermione walked down the corridor then, a smile on her face. The smile instantly dropped when she saw the look on Evangeline's face. "Evie, are you all right?" She asked and Evangeline shook her head. "I think Ronald just broke up with me," she whispered. Hermione was taken aback, confusion and shock taking over her body. "What? What do you mean you think he broke up with you? What happened?" She asked, quickly rushing to her side.

Evangeline was shaking her head. "I don't know. He said he didn't have feelings for me anymore and that he was in love with someone named Lavender Brown and he broke up with me," she explained. Hermione's face scrunched up. "Lavender? Since when did Ron know that Lavender even existed?" She asked. Evangeline shrugged helplessly. Tears were beginning to form in her eyes.

Hermione was quizzical. "This doesn't make any sense. Something is not adding up. I mean, there's no way that Ron—" Hermione cut herself off when she saw that Evangeline was crying. "Oh, Evie." Hermione was quick to pull her friend into an embrace holding her whilst Evangeline tried stop the tears from falling. Her attempts failed and the tears were quickly cascading down her cheeks.

"I-I don't know what happened. It was just so random. A-and the way he was talking about this Lavender chick. It just didn't make any sense. It was like he had been feeling this way for a while and was just pretending," she sobbed, squeezing her eyes shut. Hermione rubbed her back, tears beginning to form in her own eyes. She pulled away from the hug and held Evangeline at arms length.

"Come on, let's go back to our room," she suggested. Evangeline nodded and allowed Hermione to lead her toward the Gryffindor common room.

I bet you weren't expecting that now were you? Oh my gosh this was so fun to write. I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. Stay tuned for the next one. Also, a lot of people thought this was a Harry fic and that's my fault (even though I clarified in the extended summary chapter that this was a Ron fic). I put 'Harry Potter' in the title while meaning the 'Harry Potter' movie franchise/series, not his specific character. Sorry about that. Anyway, as always,
