CHAPTER EIGHTEEN. CHRISTMAS JOY

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

A week had gone by and Christmas was fast approaching, only a few days away. Evangeline and Vivian had just gotten done with ice skating in London, both girls tired. Tilky had prepared a nice lunch for them, the girls thanking her immensely.

The Luther family were all out of the house. Gemma had gone to visit Draco and the Malfoy family, something that made Evangeline roll her eyes. That girl was practically obsessed with the Malfoy boy. Barry had gone for a walk and neither sister knew where the Luther parents had gone.

Evangeline enjoyed the fact that it was just her and her sister there. She was in no mood to deal with her relatives. Evangeline had briefly sat at the piano, playing a couple of songs before lunch was prepared per Vivian's request. Vivian loved hearing her sister play the piano. When Tilky had made lunch for them, they went to the table to eat.

The two sisters conversed until they finished their lunch, remaining seated at the table. Tilky brought the girls cookies and Vivian smiled. "Thank you, Tilky," she said. "You're welcome Miss Vivian," Tilky responded, turning to walk away when Evangeline stopped her.

"Hey Tilky." The house elf turned around. "Yes Miss Evangeline?" She asked. "Have any letters been delivered?" She asked. "Oh, yes Miss Evangeline. I'll bring it right to you," Tilky replied before quickly scurrying off to retrieve the letter. "You expecting a letter from your boyfriend?" Vivian questioned with a smirk. "My boyfriend? I don't have a boyfriend doofus," Evangeline replied.

"Sure you do. He has red hair and blue eyes. A cute smile and a last name that's almost an animal. Hangs out with a really smart witch and a certain Chosen One," Vivian said. Evangeline's heart began to beat faster in her chest and her eyes narrowed, "He's not my boyfriend." She then scowled, not liking the feeling that she was experiencing. Vivian shrugged, "Not yet, but it's bound to happen eventually." Evangeline rolled her eyes, "No, it's not."

"Oh just admit it, you fancy him. You fancy Ronald Weasley!" Vivian exclaimed. Evangeline flinched at the loudness of her voice. "I do not fancy Ronald. Why would you even think that?" She asked. "Ever since the whole D.A. thing, you've been spending a lot of time with him," Vivian said. "I've been spending time with a lot of people, not just him," Evangeline pointed out. "Yeah but you're spending a lot more time with him. You're tutoring him," Vivian said.

Evangeline scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Because he needs help with Astronomy," she defended. Vivian rolled her eyes, "You don't really believe that, do you?" Evangeline scowled, "He literally asked me what gravity was, Vivian. Gravity!" Vivian chuckled, "That's funny." She then got serious again. "Hermione told me that you were super happy when he told you that you were pretty," she said. Evangeline rolled her eyes again, "Because I was flattered by his compliment."

"Draco Malfoy called you pretty, you weren't flattered then," Vivian said pointedly. "Because he was only saying it so that I would agree to go to the Yule Ball with him," Evangeline retorted. Vivian sighed in annoyance, "Fine. Maybe you don't fancy him. But he sure as hell fancies you." Evangeline felt her face heat up, a blush beginning to spread on her cheeks at the mere thought of the Weasley boy fancying her. She hid her face in her hands and before she could reply, Tilky was scurrying back to the girls, an envelope in her hand.

"Here you are, Miss Evangeline," she said, holding it out for her. Evangeline took the envelope from Tilky's hand. "Thanks," she said. The front of the envelope was blank and Evangeline turned it over in her hands, noticing that the once white envelope had a slightly yellow color to it. She opened it and pulled the letter out of it, seeing that it too had a change in color. Evangeline's eyebrows furrowed as she looked at it.

The letter's handwriting was unfamiliar but at the same time, Evangeline felt as though she had seen it before. "Tilky, who's this letter from?" She asked. Tilky didn't respond, only looked at Evangeline through wide eyes and Evangeline looked down at the letter again. She looked at Vivian who raised an eyebrow before reading the letter.

Moony,

I'm afraid that our time has run out. They're coming for us. They're breaking through the barrier now as I write this. I thought that Nathaniel and I would've had more time but they found out that we came back home. You know what you have to do now. Take the girls someplace safe. Protect them, just as you promised. I know that they'll try to take them away. You can't let them. I'm sorry. I wish that there was another way. I've hidden the will someplace that I know you can find it. They can't get to it there. Don't forget

The letter ended there. Evangeline stared at it with wide eyes, unsure of what to do. Of what it all meant. It wasn't finished. Something must have happened when it was being written. They must have gotten in. Evangeline turned back to the house elf who was staring up at her. "What is this? Who wrote this?" She asked her. Vivian stood up, "Angi, what's wrong?" Evangeline flung the letter in her direction, her eyes still on the house elf.

"Who wrote this?" She repeated. "Your mother Miss Evangeline. She wrote it the night she died," Tilky answered. Vivian looked up, having finished reading the letter. "Who was this for? Who's Moony?" She asked. Tilky took a few steps back, shaking her head. "I don't know Miss Vivian. I don't know," she said. Evangeline looked down, her mind racing back to when she was stunned by the Stupefy charm. The memory, mumbling about a letter.

"I knew about this letter. That someone needed to get it. How did I know?" She asked aloud. She looked at Vivian, whose eyes were wide and confused. "Maybe mum or dad mentioned something about writing a letter before they died. I don't know what's going. This is too much," Vivian said, running her hands through her hair.

The roar of the fireplace brought the girls' attention to it. A green flame appeared before disappearing, Gemma standing in its place. The blonde walked out and into the living room, eyes scanning it. They landed on the Caspian girls and her eyebrows furrowed. "You two look like you've seen a ghost."

The next letter that Evangeline received from Ron came with two packages. It was the night before Christmas and Evangeline was getting ready to go to bed when she heard a bang on her window.

She accepted the letter and the packages, feeding the owl a treat and watching it leave. She took a seat on her bed and opened up the envelope, pulling out the letter.

Dear Evangeline,

Ginny says hi and Fred and George are ignoring your words completely. So, my mum saw me reading your letter and confiscated it when Ginny told her that it was from you. She read it and learned that things were cold over there and thought that you meant it literally. I don't know, maybe you did. So she decided to knit you some things to keep you warm. She made some things for Vivian too. Sorry if this is weird. I hope you guys like them. Hopefully this makes your Christmas a little better.

P.S. I packed some treats that she made too. So that you can see how delicious they are. Enjoy!

-Ron Weasley

Evangeline stared at the letter in awe, a large smile forming on her face. She turned to the package and picked it up, opening it carefully. The first thing she saw were two pairs of mittens. One pair was maroon, the other green. Next we're two multicolored scarves. Evangeline smiled at the sight of it. The last two things were jumpers.

The first one was blue and had a large orange letter 'V' stitched into the chest. The other one was purple and had a golden letter 'E' on its chest. Evangeline clutched the jumper tightly in her hands, pulling it to her nose and smelling it. A laugh escaped her lips and tears sprung to her eyes, though she didn't let them fall. She opened the second package that had a container of different treats. They all looked really good.

The smile never left her face. The kind gesture warmed her heart greatly and also made her think of her own mother. And though her mother never made her jumpers, it was such a motherly thing to do that Evangeline couldn't help but think of her own. She sprung out of bed and ran to Vivian's room, making a note to herself to send Ron and Mrs. Weasley a thank you letter.

Christmas day was usually an unexciting and uneventful day for the Caspian sisters. So when Evangeline woke up the next morning, she hadn't expected anything special. But upon entering the kitchen that morning and seeing the angry faces of Archibald and Matilda Luther, she knew that she was in for something.

"Sit down," Matilda demanded, her tone harsh. Evangeline didn't argue with her and sat down at the breakfast table. "It has come to our attention that you have befriended Harry Potter and his friends. Is this true?" Mr. Luther said, getting straight to the point. Evangeline gulped, wringing her hands together underneath the table. Stupid Barry.

"I wouldn't call us friends—" Archibald's hand slammed down on the table, successfully cutting Evangeline off and making her jump. "I am in no mood for your games, Evangeline. Now answer the question," he snarled. Evangeline's mouth twitched in anger. "Yes. I'm friends with him," she said. Matilda took to dramatics, throwing her hands in the air. "Oh, Merlin, Evangeline! What on Earth were you thinking?" She exclaimed.

"When did this happen?" Archibald asked. Evangeline shrugged, "A few weeks ago." It was a lie, but he didn't need to know that this had been going on for much longer. His jaw locked in anger and he stood from the table, walking away from her. "You are a fool. Hanging out with Potter and those blood traitor Weasleys. And a mudblood—" Evangeline cut him off, standing from her seat and glaring coldly at him.

"Don't you dare call her that," she sneered. "Watch your tone, little girl," he growled back. "No! I will not watch my tone nor will I sit here and allow you to disrespect my friends! I am so sick and tired of you people and the way that you treat Vivian and I. You think that you have some kind of control over us and our lives. Well, guess what? You don't." Evangeline was seething, her chest heaving in anger.

Archibald and Matilda stared at her in shock, but Evangeline Caspian was not finished. "I know why you're upset that I'm friends with them, because of Voldemort. Well I don't care about him or being one of his followers or any of that. I refuse to become like you. I can hang out with whoever I damn well please. And there is nothing that you can do about it. For too long, I've allowed you to dictate my life and my feelings. But not anymore. I'm done." She glared at them both some more before turning around and walking back to the stairs.

"You're going to get them and yourself killed! I hope you know that!" Matilda called after her and Evangeline whipped around to face her. "And you're going to get your kids killed. I hope you know that," she snapped, turning around and walking up the stairs.

As she made her way to her room, she couldn't stop the sickening feeling that had begun to settle in the pit of her stomach. Matilda's words began echoing in her head.

You're going to get them and yourself killed! Evangeline hoped that she was wrong.
