❛ she knows that you can't

"next! number 37!" the announcer reported, signaling for the next contenders who were trying out for the school musical to come into the audition room.
miyong sat against the wall, waiting patiently for her turn while reading through her lines. there would only be a few more auditions until it was her turn.
though she was confident in herself and her abilities, she couldn't help but feel nervous - as anyone does before trying out for something.
"hey mi, you okay?"
miyong looked up to meet the kind eyes of a brown-haired boy - the one and only xiao dejun.
miyong smiled at him, making space for him beside her, then motioning for him to sit down. "yeah, little nervous as i always am, but i think i'm ready. you?"
xiaojun gulped sitting down beside miyong, clearly more nervous than the girl, "i don't think i'm gonna do great... the only time i've ever gotten a role in a play is when i was the third-tree-to-the-left in my fifth grade elementary school play."
"relaxxx," miyong said patting him on the shoulder, "you're a natural born actor who just needs... a little push to shine to your full potential."
the boy shared a weak smile with the girl and nodded, "thanks mi."
"anytime dejun, now go practice your lines again and lets rock this audition together, okay?"
"you know it."
the boy left and went to practice his lines in the next room over, while miyong sat in silence, meditating and slowly calming down any nerves than were still present.
after repeating her lines over and over again, miyong began to sing the tune of the song she was planning to audition with, which of course was none other than the most iconic song in "the little mermaid", "part of your world."
look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
wouldn't you think i'm the girl,
the girl who has everything?
everything? yeah, i wish, miyong thought to herself.
her mind trailed back to mark, as it always did.
she hated the fact that it did.
she hated the fact that she would only ever be his best friend.
she hated the fact that had no idea, yet he cared so much for her.
and above all, she hated the fact that she helplessly liked him - she liked him so much that her insides hurt just thinking about him.
and it hurt bad.
miyong's thoughts were rudely interrupted when a pair on black leather boots clicked against the vinyl-tiled floor agressively and stopped at her feet.
slowly looking up from her book of lines and lyrics, miyong's eyes met a sharp pair of dark ones. the girl before miyong had on a white pleated skirt and a tight fitting spaghetti-strap tanktop. her hair was done up in a perfect knot on the back of her head. her skin was flawless as always, and her eyes looked like they were sparkling with all the stars in the universe. she was without a doubt flawless in apperance.
her face on the other hand, bore an ugly scowl, despite her seemingly perfect complexion. with her arms crossed over her chest, she gazed down at miyong with a look on her face that was filled with nothing but hatred.
the girl slowly crouched down infront of miyong, the ugly scowl morphing into a forced smile, sending shivers down miyong's spine.
it was seong hyejin.
there was no one miyong was more terrified of these days than the school's it-girl herself.
hyejin's siren-like eyes looked miyong up and down, before settling on miyong's doe-like ones. "listen here miyeon... miyoung... mi- whatever, it's not like i should care about the name of a nobody like you anyways." hyejin whispered ever-so sweetly, so the only person in the room that could hear was miyong. "i can hear your squeaky little voice from the room next door, and it's hurting my ears. is it even 'part of your world' that you're singing? auditioning for ariel, i see. well, guess what? so am i." hyejin narrowed her eyes further, "you think that ms. shon has given you the roles in the past years because you're talented?" she let out a mocking laugh, "no. it's because she pities you. she knows that you can't do anything else right..."
"... you can't even keep your family together."
miyong's heart dropped at hyejin's words.
she's right, can't do anything right.
i can't keep up with perfect grades.
i can't play a game of dodgeball without fainting.
i can't even tell my best friend that i like him.
and most of all i can't even keep my family together.
miyong didn't like talking about her family, as it was barely anything like all the perfect familes she saw around her. she loved her family, yet sometimes she wished there could be more.
she took a deep breath before turning her gaze towards hyejin, "thanks for your input on my life which shouldn't concern you," miyong smiled at her, as the scowl slowly reappeared on hyejin's face, "who knew you could be so obsessed with a nobody like me?" miyong smirked slightly, standing up from where she was, she looked at hyejin directly at eye-level.
"next! number 40!"
"that's my call," miyong said to hyejin, "best of luck."
she gave a hyejin a witty wink, before leaving the angry girl alone in the room to go perform her long-awaited audition.

"hey, how'd your audition go?" renjun asked miyong the next day as the pair walked to their history class together.
miyong smiled, "i thought it went pretty good, i hope the results reflect that." she laughed as they walked to their usual table to sit down.
out of the corner of her eye, miyong spotted a girl with soft brown hair in a light green sweater entering the classroom.
"chaemin!" miyong called out to the gentle girl, who immediately turned around hearing her name. the girl smiled as she saw miyong, quickly skipping over to the table the duo was seated at.
"hi mi, what's up?" lee chaemin smiled before glancing over at renjun, who was already looking away in a different direction, knowing exactly what miyong was about to do.
lee chaemin, the new transfer student, was the very girl that renjun had supposedly taken a liking to since a few months ago. miyong had befriended her not long ago, her personality quickly growing on her.
"renjun say hi." miyong nudged the boy, whispering under her breath.
"oh... hi. i'm renjun," the boy kindly smiled, recieving a smile back from chaemin.
"wanna sit with us today?" miyong asked pulling out a chair, "here, you can sit in-between renjun and i."
"sure," chaemin happily agreed, clueless to miyong's underlying plan.
"so, chae" renjun and i were actually going to go get dinner tonight, did you want to join us? i'd love it if you did." miyong innocently asked.
"what we ar-" renjun began, before earning a kick in the shin from miyong.
"of course we are silly! don't-tell-me-you-for-got, hmm?" miyong said pausing between the syllables hoping that he would get a clue.
"i would ne-never." he replied uncertainly.
"what do you say, chae?" miyong asked, her eyes glossing over, giving the puppy-dog look.
chaemin tapped her finger to her chin, "i think i'm free tonight... so... i'm in!"
miyong cheered, tugging on renjun's sleeve, as if telling him that she had him covered.
"oh boy..." renjun sighed.
this was gonna be an interesting night for sure.
