❛ you're so kind, and that's
something i really love about you. ❜
—
mark sat at the back of his ap calculus classroom — his last block of the day — shaking his head as he tried to solve a question that his teacher had challenged him to complete.
being one of the top, and most diligent students in the class, mark could solve a question faster than anyone. this meant he would always be able to finish all his homework in class, and not have to worry about it later.
for some reason today, he just couldn't focus. his mind felt clouded with thoughts that weren't his, and whatever he tried to do, they wouldn't leave his head.
it was her.
he was really worried about her.
finally completing the last part of the sequence, mark dropped his pencil on the desk in satisfaction, gradually getting up to take a quick stretch before handing in his homework on the teacher's desk upfront.
grabbing his backpack off of the ground, and he walked out of the classroom with a sigh of relief.
it was finally wednesday, the halfway point in the school week, and normally he couldn't be happier.
as much as everyone at seoul high loved him, mark really did enjoy time away from the crowds to himself.
he walked along the halls past the library, then the computer lab, and the english lecture hall, towards the bathroom.
just as he was about to walk past the gym, he heard a loud scream — which he knew could only belong to the one and only, kim seyeon.
"oops...! it was an accident." he heard a voice call out nonchalantly, though he couldn't tell who it was through the ruckus in the gym.
worried something bad might have happened to seyeon, mark quickly peaked his head through the double doors rather just in time to see miyong collapse on the gym floor unconscious.
without a moment of hesitation, he ran in, pushed past the students, and bent down to meet the girl sprawled on the ground.
"mark? i'm so glad you're here!" seyeon exclaimed, a look of despair evident on her face as she kneeled down on the ground, trying to shake the unconscious girl awake.
"what happened? why is miyong on the floor? she's unconscious! is she hurt too? who did this? — i'm taking her to the nurses office." mark questioned rapidly, grabbing miyong's wrist and checking her pulse.
coach seulgi ran up to the scene as quickly as she could, as the students cleared a way for her. "oh dear, i think that game got a little too intense. we need to bring her to the nurses office as quickly as possible. seyeon will you be able to take her—"
"i'll take her, coach." mark immediately butted in, already looping the girl's limp arm over his shoulder.
"are you sure mark?" seyeon asked nervously glancing at the unconscious girl, afraid to take her eyes away.
"yeah, she's my girlfriend anyways." he answered firmly, picking miyong up in a way so her head rested gently on his chest.
"shouldn't you be in class?" a voice from behind him suddenly asked. he knew it was her at once.
"you should go back to class, mark. i'm sure seyeon here would be happy to take her there." hyejin sweetly smiled at him. "but you're so kind, and that's something i really love about you. always thinking about others first — others who aren't as important as you are."
mark stared blankly back at the pretty girl he faced. she had her perfect locks tied up in a ponytail clearing the way for her big shiny irises to sparkle. her words made him feel like he would melt on the inside. he was important to her. "c'mon, put her down markie. go back to class."
mark wanted to follow her. he wanted to listen to her. yet something deep down in his heart refused to let miyong down.
and markie? personally he hated the nickname, but anything that came out of hyejin's mouth was something he liked, so he had always gone along with it.
"no it's alright i— i'll take her to the nurses office." he responded, nodding towards coach seulgi. he spared one last glance over to a bitter — yet still pretty — looking hyejin, before exiting the gym with a pale looking girl curled steadily between his arms.
he gazed down at her soft and gentle looking features sighing, wondering how she had gotten herself into a mess like this.
walking to the nurses office, mark couldn't help but stare at her face. miyong had almond-shaped eyes and naturally long lashes to go along with it. she had a slightly upturned nose and small heart shaped lips on her somewhat round shaped face — a pale pink colour dusted her complexion, tying it all together.
she was undeniably pretty, though she herself would never believe it when anyone told her so.
arriving at the nurses office, mark politely greeted the head nurse before gently setting down the girl on the bed at the end of the room.
"mark dear, what happened to her?" nurse bae asked, with a sincere look of concern on her face as her gaze dropped to the girl lying on the bed.
"i'm not sure either," mark grimaced, "she was in her pe class, and i happened to walk by and see her collapse on the gym floor."
nurse bae sighed, "thank you for bringing her here mark, you're a great friend to her."
mark stopped in his tracks. friend? he wasn't just her friend. he was her boyfriend — fake-boyfriend, but that was besides it all.
"actually she's my girlfriend." he suddenly blurted out, unable to hold himself back.
"oh?" nurse bae smiled in curiosity, "congratulations to you two then, i had no idea! i thought you just saw each other as friends."
"yeah... we're also best friends." mark laughed nervously unsure of why he had just blurted out something so unnecessary. "i— can i stay here with her until she wakes up?"
"sure thing, mark. let me just get an ice pack for her head, i can already see a bruise swelling up... poor girl." nurse bae smiled with a twinkle in her eye, as she turned to grab an ice pack.
mark looked towards the unconscious girl once again as a small smile crept onto his face. though she was still unconscious, she looked peaceful and cute in her rest. he gently reached his hand out to caress the girl's forehead, then traced his thumb down her cheek to her chin, slowly letting his arm fall to the side so their hands met.
"here mark, place this on her head will you?" nurse bae returned, handing mark a packet of ice wrapped in a towel.
"will do nurse, thank you." he responded with a grateful smile.
"i'm trusting that you'll take good care of her?" she asked, receiving a profound from mark nod in return. "i'll leave you to it then." she gave him a kind smile before heading back to her office room.
with his hand tightly gripped around hers, he sat down on a chair beside the bed. using his other hand, he stroked his fingers through her hair in silence, slowly drifting off into a sleep himself.
