CHAPTER THREE
and I remember that fight,
two-thirty A.M.

REAL LIFE
IF THERE WAS one thing that Luna didn't expect to wake up to, it was shouting voices.
Luna's eyes fluttered open, blinking blearily through the darkness of her room. Her eyebrows knit in confusion as she pushed herself up onto her elbow from how she had been laying on her stomach. In her practically still-sleeping state, she tried to focus on the source of the shouting voices. It wasn't long after that she realized the voices were coming from her living room, and belonged to two very familiar people.
Foolish and Mary Jane.
That shocked Luna out of some of her sleepiness. Foolish and Mary Jane had arguments, sure, but they never turned into screaming matches — not like this. Their argument echoed throughout the entire house, and there was no doubt in Luna's mind that the neighbors could hear them, too.
She reached over onto her nightstand and tapped on her phone screen to see the time. Luna winced slightly from the bright screen before her eyes adjusted. The time read two-thirty A.M. How they hadn't gotten a noise complaint yet, Luna didn't know. She also didn't know how long this argument had been going on, but considering that she was unhappy to have been woken up, Luna knew that others would come rolling in and tell them to be quiet sooner or later.
As much as she didn't want to step in between them right now, Luna wanted to stop this fight before things got too heated. She pushed herself out of her bed, instantly shivering from the lack of warmth from her covers. Luna crossed her arms across her chest in effort to keep some warmth and opened her door, stumbling down the dark stairs slightly. She blinked a couple of times from the living room light, her eyes adjusting again, before she saw the scene in front of her.
Foolish and Mary Jane were standing in the kitchen, facing each other with rigid statures. Mary Jane had her hands on her hips, her head tilted up to look at him. Luna couldn't see her face, but she was sure that fire in her eyes was blazing brighter than ever. Foolish, who Luna could see, had no twinkle in his eyes like he normally did. His jaw was clenched slightly and his hair seemed ruffled, probably from him running his hands through it. Foolish was wearing his pair of worn-out jeans and Mary Jane was in a short skirt — Luna vaguely recalled Mary Jane going over to Foolish's once he ended stream to talk like Luna suggested. They must've gone out somewhere and come back to Luna's house where everything exploded.
"Uh—" Luna began, absentmindedly clutching onto the fabric of her t-shirt with her hand.
"You told me to leave you alone!" Foolish yelled, not hearing her.
"I didn't actually mean it!" Mary Jane argued.
"Guys?" Luna tried again.
"All you keep doing is sending me mixed signals!" Foolish continued, clearly exasperated. "Just tell me what you want, straight up."
Mary Jane scoffed. "Oh, that is so rich coming from you. How am I supposed to tell you anything when you've been so distant?"
"You've been making me distant!"
"Hey!" Luna shouted.
That definitely caught their attention. Both Foolish and Mary Jane looked at her, almost in slight shock, like they hadn't expected her to catch them in the middle of an argument. Luna suddenly felt very awkward, but at least they stopped yelling.
"Go back to bed, Luna," Mary Jane told her, her voice quieting. "It's late."
"You're right, it is," Luna agreed. "You should also be sleeping too instead of going at each other's throats."
Foolish's eyes immediately softened at her. "It's okay, Lunes. Just go back to sleep."
"It's kind of hard to do that when you're yelling at two in the morning. Maybe it's good that I'm the one giving you a noise complaint rather than our neighbors." Luna glanced in between them for a moment. "Guys, what is going on?"
"It's nothing," Foolish replied.
Mary Jane slowly turned back to him. "Nothing? This is nothing to you?"
"Oh my God, Mary Jane, I didn't mean it like that—"
"Okay," Luna interjected again, holding up her hand. "Just step back for a moment and take a deep breath."
Mary Jane shook her head. "I can't deal with this right now." She walked up to the door. "I'm leaving."
Luna watched her grab her car keys out of the bowl by the door and moved closer to Mary Jane. "MJ, where — it's the middle of the night. You can't just leave."
"It's fine. I'll text you when I get wherever I'm going."
"Get? MJ—"
"Luna," Mary Jane voiced, looking back at her for a moment. "Please."
Mary Jane's eyes were big, and were getting a little glassy towards the bottom. Luna immediately frowned. In all of their years of friendship, Luna was sure she had never seen Mary Jane this upset. Whenever Mary Jane got sad, she usually locked herself in her room and dealt with it until she was ready to talk. But now, she wanted to leave the house entirely, which wasn't like her. Luna didn't really like the idea of her going out alone, but the brokenness in her voice made it hard for her to say no.
"Text me, and text Karl, too, just to be safe," Luna insisted. "MJ, please be careful."
Mary Jane gave her a nod. And without a single glance at Foolish, she opened the door and walked away.
Luna watched the door shut, the sound echoing throughout the entire house. After the yelling, the quiet was shocking, and almost seemed out of place. Luna let out a frustrated sigh, running her hand across her face. Not only was she woken up in the middle of the night, but she had to try and mediate an argument, and now she was on standby to hear from her best friend who ran off at two-thirty in the morning to be alone.
"I'm sorry," a quiet, vulnerable voice stated.
The sound was enough to break her heart. Luna turned around to see Foolish still standing in her kitchen. His hair was falling around his face, almost like a shield, but she could see his eyes glistening. Even though he stood at six-one with the form of an actual fucking football player because he was one, he seemed like he was trying to make himself smaller. This side of Foolish was so in contrast to his usual happy and chaotic self that it made Luna's mind spin a little.
"Don't be, it's fine, really," Luna said, walking towards him a bit. "Are you okay?"
He sniffled a bit, averting his gaze to the ground. "Um . . . I don't know."
"That's fine, you don't have to — oh."
Luna was cut off by Foolish suddenly bending down and practically collapsing into her embrace. His arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her in close, burying his head into the crook of her neck. Luna froze for a second from the sudden contact before relaxing into it. She put her arms around her neck and rose up onto her toes.
Not that she wasn't used to affection from Foolish. He was usually affectionate with Mary Jane because they were dating and pretty much accepted affection from anyone who gave it to him, especially Karl. Luna tried to back away from that because of Mary Jane, but she had never gotten a Foolish hug like this. It just told her that all he really needed was comfort.
"Noah," Luna voiced softly. He froze for a second against her — Luna never really used his real name, not unless she wanted him to really listen. "You know it's okay to cry, right?"
Foolish shook his head against her neck, his hair tickling her skin. "I'm not crying."
"Never said that you were, just that it's okay to." Luna paused for a moment. "Do you want to talk about it?"
He moved closer to her, if that was even possible. "It's dumb. Miscommunication. Shit like that."
"Well, communication is key in a relationship," Luna voiced. "Maybe next time, let's try to do that without screaming your head off at two in the morning?"
That earned a small laugh out of Foolish. Because, after all, Luna was the one who could make him laugh when he knew he was about to cry. Luna felt a soft smile make its way onto her face from the mere sound of it.
Luna glanced at the clock — it was almost three, now. "Why don't you go home and try to get some sleep?"
"I don't want to go," Foolish protested, his voice slightly muffled. "Not when Mary Jane is still out there. I mean, I know we just fought, but . . . I need to know if she's okay."
"I'll stay up and wait for her. You can crash in my room until she comes back, okay? And then you can talk some things over in the morning."
Foolish's voice got quiet again, almost . . . shy. "Lunes?"
"Yeah?" Luna responded.
"Will you sing to me until I fall asleep?"
Her smile slightly widened. "Of course."
Luna ran her hand up and down his back a couple times before pulling herself away from him. She led him towards her room upstairs, which was still set up for sleeping — which just meant her star projector was on, painting her ceiling in shades of blue. Foolish took off his shoes and climbed underneath her covers, pulling them on over him. Luna walked over to the corner of her room and grabbed her guitar off the stand, right next to her keyboard. She settled herself down on her bed next to Foolish and placed her guitar on her lap.
She strummed on her guitar for a moment, finding the right chords. "I never said it, but I know that I can't picture anything past twenty-five, not like I care to know the timing, not like I'm looking for that silence . . ."
Her voice was quiet, along with the strumming of her guitar, almost like a lullaby. She continued to play her own song, called Camden, that she had released on her EP about a year ago. Luna only stopped when she looked over and saw Foolish was truly asleep when she was near the very end of the song. She reached over and grabbed her phone, hoping to see a message from Mary Jane, but was met with a message from Karl instead.

REAL LIFE
LUNA SHUT OFF her phone, the bright light extinguishing through the darkness of her room. What she had said to Karl was true — there was no way that she was going back to bed. She glanced over, her eyes locking on Foolish's sleeping figure for a moment. After what she had seen in the kitchen, he looked incredibly peaceful.
She gingerly got up from her bed so she wouldn't wake him, still holding her guitar, and grabbed her song book and pen from her nightstand. Luna quietly walked across her room and went to her door. She opened it, trying not to make any noise, and squeezed herself through it. Luna shut the door behind her, went back downstairs, and moved out into the living room.
Luna sat on the couch, placing her phone face-up on the coffee table so she could see if her screen lit up. She put her guitar next to her on the couch and tucked her knees up to her chest. Luna flipped to a new page in her song book and placed the book on her knees. She clicked her pen and placed it on the paper, an idea already forming in her head.
Her pen moved across the page, writing And part of me wants to walk away until you really listen . . .
