THE DAY WAS UPON THEM, AND LUNA WAS SCARED TO DEATH. Up until that point, she had tried to put on a brave face, but the truth was that she was terrified. She was ready to give her lief to the cause, but she didn't want to die. What if it didn't work?
Vender was giving Talon some final advice as Luna stood in front of Sunshine, who was fighting off tears. The blonde woman's voice was shaky as she told the girl, "Please be safe, my darling. Follow Vender's advice, and take care of yourself before anyone else."
"Yes, ma'am," Luna replied.
"Oh, Luna," Sunshine muttered, and she pulled the Geyser girl into a hug. Luna was normally not a huge fan of hugs, but at that point, Sunshine was like her family. The woman whispered in her ear, "You always were my favorite Tribute, you know."
Luna smiled as she pulled away, and she frowned when she noticed tears dripping down her escort's face. She cooed, "Don't cry, Sunshine."
"I love you," the Heavenfall woman informed her, trying to wipe away her etars without messing up her makeup. She assured her, "I'll be cheering for you."
"I love you too," Luna chuckled, and the woman kissed her cheek.
She and Talong then swapped places so that she was standing in front of Vender. He grabbed her by the shoulder lightly and turned her away from the other two so that they could ensure that no one else heard anything. He looked in her the eye and muttered, "If anything happens, put yourself first."
"But the plan..." she reminded him. She had been told to protect Katniss and Beetee at all costs. They were the essential ones there, not her. She might be able to hack into the Capitol, but she definitely wasn't as good as Beetee. She also was not able to lead a rebellion, no matter how much she believed in it.
"I know, I know. But I don't care about Katniss or Beetee," he responded, and she had to take a deep breath. She didn't realize how much she was miss him when she got into the arena. He was the closest thing to a parent that she had had in a while. "You're my Tribute. I work for you, I train you, and I can't lose you."
She nodded, letting him know that she understood. "Just get us out of there as soon as you can, and it won't have to come to that."
"I will. Fight like hell, and I swear to God, if you let Talon kick your ass..." he trailed off, glancing over at the boy, who was staring out the window boredly while Sunshine pinched his cheeks.
Luna might have laughed at the thought if it weren't for the situation. "I'd rather run naked through the Capitol."
"That's my girl," he chuckled before pulling her into a hug. She embraced him back tightly, and she had to bury her face in his shirt so that she didn't cry. He kissed her on the top of her head before releasing her and nodding.
They were then led out of their suite and onto a hovercraft. They had all been there before, and they allowed the Peacekeepers to inject them with the trackers. Once they landed, Luna was split up from Talon and led to the room where she would step on her platform.
When she arrived, she was pleased to see a familiar back standing there, ready to see her off. "Olive."
"Luna..." the woman breathed out, turning around when she heard the girl's voice. There were tears streaming down her face, and her entire body was shaking a little bit.
The Geyser girl frowned at her expression because she did not want the last thing she saw before going into the arena to be sad Olive. The great thing about Olive was that she was optimistic and full of light. "Hey, don't cry. I'm the one about to die."
"Don't say that," the Nightheart woman said because that just made her cry harder. She hurried to wipe the tears off of her face. "I'm sorry. I just loved being your stylist so much."
"Can you stop talking like I'm already dead?" Luna joked. She was speaking like she was talking at her funeral, which was not the most inspiring thing to hear.
"I'm sorry," Olive replied, hugging the girl and saying, "Good luck, although I know you don't need it."
Luna nodded, and they pulled away when the timer indicated that she needed to step onto the platform. Once she was on it, glass surrounded her, and she was trapped in the tube. She put her hand on the glass and mouthed, 'I love you.'
'I love you too,' Olive mouthed back, and then, the platform began to ascend.
Luna took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She didn't open them until she felt salty air on her face, and her heart dropped. Each platform was surrounded by water that led up to the cornucopia. In between the platforms was a strip of land, but there would have to be some swimming to reach it.
The reason that the Geyser girl panicked about this was because ever since her injury, she had been unable to swim. They allowed her to have her brace in the arena since she literally could not walk without it, but it weighed her down in water like crazy. And without the leg power to kick with that leg, chances were that she was going to sink real fast.
She looked around at her surroundings, ignoring the voice saying the normal stuff like 'may the odds be ever in your favor.' The strips of land led to the cornucopia, but the other way, they led to a beach that was surrounded by rainforest.
"Luna!" Her head whipped around when she heard Finnick's voice calling her name, and she breathed out a sigh of relief when she realized he was right next to her. He must have put together the fact that she would struggle swimming because he told her, "Stay there. I'll get us supplies and come back for you."
She furrowed her eyebrow and shook her head because there was no way in hell that she was just standing there and waiting. She needed to get off the platform and start fighting, or else she was done for. "What? No."
"See if you can jump to the land and figure out where Peeta is," he instructed, and she sighed, unsure of whether or not she could make that jump but grateful that she had something to do. "I'll get Katniss and Johanna."
"Three, two, one."
The countdown snuck up on Luna because she had tuned it out, and as soon as the shot went off, the Odair man was diving into the water. She cursed, glancing around to see everyone already off their pedestals, no Peeta in sight.
She turned toward the strip of land and decided that if she could just jump far enough to grab onto the rocks, she would be able to pull herself up. She took a deep breath before launching herself as far as she could. She plunged into the salty water, and she only had to swim a foot or so to grab onto the land. However, as soon as she started to pull herself up, someone stepped on her hand.
She cried on in pain as it was squished against the rocks, and she looked up to see the boy from 8 standing above her with a smirk. He was unarmed, but he seemed to have gathered that she would drown if she wasn't holding on.
He lifted his foot up and kicked her under her chin, and she grunted as her head snapped back, her hold on the rock slipping because the pain made her hand weak. He had the high ground and the advantage. She wasn't winning this fight.
But all of a sudden, an arrow sailed through his head, and he fell backwards into the water. She looked around in shock until her eyes landed on Katniss with her bow in her hand. All it took was the Everdeen girl to nod, and Luna knew that this was her doing.
She used the rest of her strength to hoist herself up on the land, and she climbed to her feet. She remembered her mission to find Peeta, and she got close enough to the cornucopia to be able to hop from one strip of land from another.
Finally, as she rounded the circle, she saw the Mellark boy bobbing in the water. Her eyes widened when she realized that he was fighting someone, and she quickened her pace. She finally reached the strip that he was near, and she ran down to him.
Peeta was facing her, and the other boy was facing the other way. So, Luna used her advantage of the element of surprise to sneak up behind them. Once she was close enough, she grabbed the boy's head and slammed it into the rocks.
His eyes went lifeless, and his body went still, floating in the sea water. Peeta looked up at her, terror in his eyes until he realized who it was. She reached her hand down and helped him out just as Mags, Finnick, and Katniss joined them.
"Let's get the hell out of here," she told them, and they all nodded in agreement, finding the quickest past to the jungle and disappearing.
