JAHZARA'S VOICE TREMBLED with frustration as she let out a sigh. "i could cry right now, my head hurts so much," she whined, pushing her chromebook away from her. she really needed relief from the pounding ache that seemed to radiate from every corner of her skull.
zoey moved closer, a sense of tranquility enveloped her. her eyes wandered aimlessly, fixating on an nothing in the distance.
a dreamy smile played across her lips, as if she had been transported to a blissful reverie. it was as if she had been transported to a realm of pure bliss, where time stood still and worries melted away.
in her mind, thoughts of the lingering kiss she had shared with ddot swirled like vibrant strokes on an artist's canvas. the memory played like a vivid movie, each frame evoking a moment they shared that day.
jahzara, attuned to her friend's musing disposition, noticed the ethereal glow that layed on zoey's face. she could tell that zoey was mentally drifting away, journeying to a whole different world of emotions and thoughts.
curiosity piqued, jahzra lifted her head, her fingers gracefully sweeping through her hair to reveal her mischievous smile. "watchu you think about zozo?" she asked, her tone laced with a hint of jest. ahzara gently squished one of zoey's cheeks, eliciting a giggle from her friend.
"nothing really." she lied through her teeth, but her smile said something else. jahzara nods, staying silent knowing that zoey was gonna start rambling in less than 5 seconds.
"okay so on sunday—ddot called me over right so i was like okay, i'll come over and i was soooo happy jah—i took a whole shower to smell good and all. i smelled like roses, at least i hope so because it took a long time to shower. then—then i walked to his house, jah i was going crazy. i opened the door right? and he looks so like, good? i don't even know. and then after that he hugs me, he hugs me. like no he hugs me, omg he hugged me." zoey smiled, rolling her hands over her face.
jahzara's warm smile stretched across her face as she gazed at the girl with genuine kindness. sensing zoey's deep longing to befriend ddot. how had zoey managed to break down the impenetrable walls that shielded ddot's heart?
after all, ddot was notorious for his guarded nature, rarely letting anyone in or trusting them fully.
recalling the events of the previous summer, it became apparent that ddot's emotional journey had taken a tumultuous turn. just as school had come to an end, he received the news of his beloved grandmother's passing. strangely, the news arrived several days after her actual departure from this world, leaving ddot grappling with a confusing mix of emotions.
the weight of grief settled heavily upon ddot's young shoulders, threatening to consume his every waking moment. overwhelmed and unsure of how to navigate this newfound pain, he made a conscious decision to shut himself off from the world.
throughout the long and sweltering summer days, ddot withdrew from friends and family, thinking that it would be for the best.
the world outside seemed to fade into a blur as he immersed himself in the depths of his sorrow. conversations became mere echoes in the background, and laughter felt distant and foreign.
jahzara, knowing how ddot was from a young age, she recognized that he needed time to grapple with the complex emotions that grief had thrust upon him. it was during this delicate period that jahzara's supportive presence became even more crucial.
now, the only thing that left her confused was how zoey had effortlessly forged a deep connection with him in less than two months. most people would barely scratch the surface of forming a friendship with ddot, at that point was the time he would start saving there numbers in his phone.
jahzara had always been acutely aware of zoey's natural talent for making friends. it seemed as though zoey possessed an innate charm that effortlessly drew people towards her.
however, jahzara had never witnessed zoey's remarkable ability in action until they crossed paths.
the first encounter between jahzara and zoey took place during their childhood years. jahzara, with her distinctive features and unique demeanor, had often been subjected to unkind remarks and teasing from her peers. she was the kid who constantly heard the disheartening phrase, "fix your face." the weight of those words had etched themselves into jahzara's consciousness, making her wary of new connections and hesitant to reveal her true self.
zoey, on the other hand, embodied a stark contrast to jahzara's experiences. she exuded an effortless confidence and radiated a warmth that drew people towards her like moths to a flame.
when fate brought jahzara and zoey together, jahzara's skepticism held a hint of curiosity. she approached their initial interaction with trepidation, unsure of what to expect from this seemingly magnetic individual. yet, to her surprise, zoey greeted her with a genuine smile that reached her eyes, erasing any doubts or insecurities that jahzara carried.
as they spent more time together, jahzara witnessed the magic of zoey's friendship-making prowess firsthand. it was as if zoey possessed an intuitive understanding of human nature, effortlessly navigating the complex terrain of emotions and forging connections that transcended the superficial.
jahzara couldn't help but marvel at zoey's ability to accept her for who she truly was. in zoey's presence, jahzara felt safe, free from judgment, and encouraged to embrace her uniqueness.
it was a transformative experience that shattered jahzara's preconceived notions about friendship and taught her the power of genuine connections.
in a world where forming lasting bonds often took months, if not years, to cultivate, zoey had defied the norm. her unwavering authenticity and unwavering ability to create deep connections had left jahzara in awe. she knew that zoey's friendship was a rare gift, one that she cherished and hoped to reciprocate with equal fervor.
most people now barely now barely have good intentions when it comes to friends—but zoey? she was a total sweetheart.
even zoey had met people from her childhood that had made fun of her—bullied her as a kid, and was now trying to befriend her. of course zoey didn't let them know she remembered them, but it was a ick that stuck out to her,
and when it comes to zoey she barely has any icks.
jahzara smiled at zoey, her eyes filled with warmth and understanding, as she listened to zoey's excited ramblings about the boy who everyone claimed had no heart. she knew that zoey's determination to befriend ddot came from a genuine place of care and compassion. zoey's unwavering resilience shone through, refusing to give up on befriending the boy despite his seemingly emotionless facade.
in the middle of zoey's passionate rant, the school bell rang, abruptly interrupting their conversation.
zoey's face fell, disappointment evident in her expression. "but this is my only class with youuuu," she sighed, frustration lacing her words. "this school is so unfair." she slowly gathered her things, a sense of resignation settling in.
jahzara nodded fully understanding zoey's frustration. "word cause why they playin with us?" she sympathized.
the two walk out the class together, sharing a small hug before they part ways, the missed opportunity hung in the air.
as zoey hurried to the bathroom, her head was down, fixated on her phone. until she inadvertently collided with someone, causing her phone to slip from her grasp. panic surged through her as she watched it tumble towards the hard floor.
before she could react, a hand bedecked with glistening rings darted in and snatched it up, saving it from impending doom.
zoey slowly raised her head to meet the gaze of the person who had come to her rescue. it was caleb. the sight of him sent a jolt through her, leaving her unsure of how to react.
caleb couldn't help but chuckle at the situation, breaking the tension that had momentarily enveloped them. his voice carried a touch of amusement as he remarked, "nah lil lady that's you? ain't even recognize you wit braids. they cute tho."
zoey's eyes narrowed slightly as she studied caleb's face, searching for any trace of insincerity. the glimmer of mischief in his eyes seemed genuine, but she couldn't shake the nagging doubt that lingered within her.
suppressing the unease that threatened to consume her, zoey managed a half-hearted smile and replied, "thank you, it didn't even take long for them either." she laughs softly at the end awkwardly.
caleb's smile widened, revealing a row of perfectly white teeth. "well, it suits you," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of sincerity. "but hollon imma catch you later. see you zo" calbe walks off quickly,
zoey nods, deciding to forget whatever just happened and continues to make her way to the bathroom. as she walked zoey started to feel bad, she really hadn't helped caleb around the school even though she was supposed to.
their encounter left her both feeling a mix of emotions. but she makes a ultimate decision to brush it off, nothing could really ruin her day today.
finally, zoey managed to find the bathroom. she opened the bathroom door seeing that there was already a girl standing there, running her hand through her ginger straight hair.
with a mix of relief and anticipation, she cautiously pushed open the door only to find a girl standing in front of the bathroom mirror.
her slender fingers delicately glided through her lustrous ginger locks, each strand seemingly dancing to its own rhythm. as she meticulously rearranged her hair, it was evident that she carried with her an air of poise and self-awareness, her movements imbued with a quiet confidence.
zoey, observing her from a distance, couldn't help but be captivated by her beauty.
the black glasses perched ever so gracefully on her face, accentuating her features and lending an intriguing allure. the clarity of her complexion was remarkable, as if she possessed an ethereal glow that illuminated the room.
the girl's presence exuded a sense of tranquility, yet there was a subtle hint of melancholy in her eyes, as if she carried the weight of recent turmoil. it was as if she had experienced the depths of sorrow and emerged stronger, her resilience etched into her very being.
there was a something she knew.
zoey, for once, didn't say anything, she only moved to the other part of the mirror and start washing her hands, something she did after class sometimes since the class materials might have anything in it.
zoey took her braids out of the low ponytail it was, beginning to style it back up as she heard the girl speak up. "hi." the girl smiled slowly.
zoey startled for a second before she turned her attention to the girl next to her, "oh... um, hi." she smiles back.
as their eyes met, zoey couldn't help but feel a sense of unease wash over her. it was as if the girl knew something, something that had been hidden from the rest of the world.
"i'm naomi. you're zoey, right?" naomi's voice carried a hint of curiosity as she tilted her head slightly. zoey, caught off guard by the unexpected encounter, nodded hesitantly.
naomi's lips formed a knowing smile, and her tongue clicked against the roof of her mouth before she spoke again. "so, you're Zoey Bennet, the same girl who stole Darrian's precious ole chain, aren't you?"
zoey's heart skipped a beat, and her breath caught in her throat as she heard those words. the world around her seemed to momentarily freeze as a wave of panic rushed through her veins. in that instant, she realized her carefully guarded secret had been exposed.
zoey had believed, with a naive sense of assurance, that nobody in the school knew about her involvement. however, the words that spilled from Naomi's lips shattered that illusion like fragile glass.
fear and guilt washed over zoey in relentless waves, threatening to drown her in a sea of emotions.
how did naomi find out? what did she want from her? who even is she?
she struggled to maintain her composure, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched onto the strap of her bag for support.
zoey's mind raced for a solution. in that fleeting moment, the first option that popped into her mind was to lie and gaslight. it was a desperate and instinctual response, a feeble attempt to protect herself from the impending consequences.
"i don't know what you're talking about," she managed to say, her voice surprisingly calm, though the quiver in her tone betrayed her true feelings. she hoped against hope that Naomi would believe her fabricated denial, that the web of deceit she was weaving would hold strong.
but deep down, zoey knew that her lie was transparent. the brief flicker of uncertainty in naomi's eyes was enough to reveal that the truth was already known. the weight of her deception bore down heavily on her conscience, intensifying her fear and guilt.
a sense of regret washed over her, regret for ever getting involved in the secret she now desperately tried to protect.
as the seconds ticked by, silence hung heavy in the air, the unspoken tension between zoey and naomi. the outcome of their encounter remained uncertain, and zoey could only hope that her feeble attempt at deception would buy her some time, some semblance of control over the chaos unfolding around her.
naomi, relishing in the power she held over zoey, maintained a cool and collected demeanor. her eyes gleamed with a mix of amusement and something darker, hinting at a hidden agenda. she leaned in closer, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper.
"now zoey," naomi said, her tone laced with a tinge of menace. "we both know you lyin sweetheart, but i guess we could work something out, couldn't we? a little favor in exchange for my silence."
zoey's mind raced, contemplating the consequences of refusing naomi's proposition. the thought of being exposed, humiliated, and potentially facing severe repercussions sent shivers down her spine. she knew she had to tread carefully.
but something in her told her to just keep saying no. so that's what she did. zoey shook her head. "i still don't know what your talking about."
naomi's eyebrows raised, "oh, really? you expect me to believe that? zoey, guess who sent that email to the principal boo." she cross her arms.
in that moment, time seemed to stand still as the weight of the unspoken truth hung heavy in the air. the girl's gaze held a mix of curiosity and knowing, her eyes seemingly peering into the depths of zoey's soul. was she a silent observer, a witness to the clandestine act that had transpired? or she was more than a mere spectator, holding secrets that could unravel the web of deception surrounding the missing chain.
"i... i swear, i didn't take it. i have no idea what happened to ddot's chain." zoey stammers quietly, shaking her head as she looked down.
naomi leaned in closer, "well, zoey, i suggest you start telling the truth. because if you think you can get away with this, you're fucking wrong boo."
zoey scoffs, "why would i lie about this anyway? plus i don't even know you. you could be the one who had the chain and tried to blame it on me."
naomi's heart sinks as she recognizes the all-too-familiar signs of gaslighting. she takes a deep breath, trying to keep her composure as she searches for the right words. "zoey, i was right fucking next to you when you put that shit in your wallet. don't play with me."
zoey's tone shifts, her voice laced with feigned innocence. "why are you even accusing of that being me? there's a bunch of girls with curly hair and braces."
zoey knew she sounded stupid and dumb, her storyline wasn't even matching up but one thing she always did when she was stuck was lie, even if naomi didn't like her already—just the gaslighting will make her feel uneasy.
naomi's frustration grows, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and confusion. "i don't get what your trying to fucking do zoey but you sound stupid as hell. i physically saw you take the chain."
zoey maintains her innocent act, her voice steady and unwavering. "i swear on everything. i would never do that to ddot—he's like my best friend, i don't know who would ever even think to steal something like that,"
naomi's heart sinks further as she realizes that zoey is not willing to admit her wrongdoing. she takes a step back, feeling a mix of disappointment and confusion. the realization was that this wouldn't go as she planned it to go.
"so you didn't take the chain? it was somebody else?" naomi asks as she slowly leans back from the girl.
tears welled up in zoey's eyes as she reluctantly nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "i would never do that? why aren't you even thinking of that?" the lie flew out of zoey's mouth so smooth, you couldn't even tell she was lying now.
naomi let out a sigh. "i really just wanted to help him, he had been stressing about that chain and i remember how much he loved his grandmother so when i saw a girl that looked like you, i just thought it was you.
"me too, but it wasn't me," zoey's voice dripped with a chilling mixture of satisfaction and malice. her words lingered in the air, leaving an unsettling feeling in the room.
the dim light cast eerie shadows on her face as she spoke. "the last thing i would ever want to do is steal his chain when it obviously meant something to him," zoey drawled slowly, her tone laced with a sadistic glee. a smile formed on her lips, but it was a smile that held no warmth or genuine happiness. it was a smile that sent shivers down one's spine.
slowly shaking her head, naomi took a step back, only to find herself pressed against the cold, unforgiving wall. her heart raced, pounding against her chest, matching the rhythm of her racing thoughts.
"nah, you're fucking crazy gang. you're... a psycho," she stammered, her voice trembling with a mix of disbelief and terror. she pointed a shaky finger at zoey, as if trying to ward off the crazy that emanated from her.
zoey's smile widened, revealing a row of perfectly aligned teeth. zoey's eyes gleamed with a malevolence that sent a shudder down naomi's spine.
as naomi hastily retreated through the bathroom door, a sense of foreboding lingered in the air. the sound of her footsteps echoed down the empty hallway, each step a desperate attempt to escape the clutches of the malevolent presence she had encountered.
left alone in the bathroom, zoey turned her attention to the mirror. her reflection stared back at her, distorted by the flickering lights above. her eyes glinted with a twisted determination, promising a reign of terror to come.
"i didn't do anything wrong."
