ONE THING ZOEY didn't play about was her friends. she cherished her friendship like babies, like if she didn't hold on to them they were gonna break. zoey was the type of person that checked up on you during a school break, face you, and even send long text messages.
to her, friendships were like precious gems that she had to keep safe and protected. she would go to great lengths to make sure that her friends felt appreciated and valued, and was always there to lend an ear or offer a shoulder to cry on.
zoey would go out if her way sometimes to make the biggest surprise birthday, and even if the two couldn't see each other face to face for whatever reason she would always be the first one to send a paragon when it hits 12.
she valued her friendships deeply, treating them with the utmost care and attention. she was fiercely protective of her friends, and took great care to make sure they felt appreciated and supported. zoey was the type of person who would check in on you during school breaks, face you, and even send thoughtful text messages.
so when she was called from the loud speaker, the three sitting in silence in the principal's office—zoey felt like their was something she was missing out on.
and it wasn't school related.
"uhm so we were reported that a object of one of the students went missing.. do you have anything to do with it?" the head principal asked zoey causing her heart to drop—she didn't even get to progress anything happening right now.
"wh—what? i don't know what your talking about truly." zoey says in the most convincing voice she could manage. she felt like she knew what they were talking about, but she didn't want to jump to conclusions.
mrs. Jackson, who was sitting next to the head principal, shook her head frantically. "i told you it ain't zoey—why do you even think it's zoey? i don't know how this even came to be a topic. people who lose their stuff here come to report it, not send some anonymous email. like, what the..."
zoey furrowed her brow, trying to make sense of what mrs jackson was saying."what do you mean by that?" she asked, her voice shaking a little. she was confused and scared, and she didn't know what was going on.
and she felt like she didn't even want to know what was going on.
zoey wasn't sure if she could contain herself at the moment, she felt like at any moment she was gonna have a breakdown.
the head principal let out a sigh, interlocking his fingers before looking zoey directly in the eyes. "we had gotten an email, somebody had brung it to my attention that a object had gone missing by their—uh—significant other. and they had said they specifically remembered a girl who went by well.. your name zoey. so we just wanted to ask.."
zoey tried to swallowing the lunp through her throat. she looked around—paranoid and it was obviously showing. "uhm—i don't know what your talking about. why would i have to steal somebody's stuff like that?"
it wasn't something to be bragging about but zoey was way to good at gaslighting. she could make you feel like your wrong even though you were right. she knew that it wasn't a good trait to have, and she wished that she could stop herself from doing it. however, she couldn't help but feel like it was something that was ingrained in her personality.
whenever zoey was in a difficult situation, she would turn to gaslighting as a way to avoid taking responsibility for her actions. whe would twist the truth and make people feel like they were wrong, even when they were right. she could be very convincing, and people would often believe her lies.
zoey knew that she needed to work on herself if she wanted to be a better person, but she knew that wasn't happening anytime soon.
somehow, just like now, she managed to get out of the situation unscathed, but with a lingering sense of paranoia that stayed with her as she walked out the door.
this situation is intense, and she feels trapped. she was anxious and on edge, and she's unsure of what to do. but the thing is that she knew there was no one to blame but herself. only herself.
zoey can't handle stress well, it always got the best of her. as much as she just tries to communicate wit the person, or actually acknowledge the problem unlike other people it was still hard.
zoey let's out a breath as she leans her head against the wall—she couldn't even understand what was happening right now. one thing about zoey was that she didn't think, she just acted. and that's what got her into this mess in the first place.
she hit her lip, she felt like she could've played it off better. she sounded downright guilty at the moment. zoey knew that stealing the chain in the first place was never right thing to do in the first place but can you blame her?
she had made it a firm decision that the first thing she was gonna do when she got home was to open her macbook and find a way to track who had sent the email to the principal.
"zoey." a voice called causing her to snap her head back in paranoia. zoey looked around her self before she felt a pair of arms pull her by the wrist. "zoey. ma, it's just me." ddot let's out a soft laugh when he sees the panic in zoey's eyes.
zoey tried to smile it off but it was obvious it was a fake one planted on her face. ddot hugged her before he said anything—like a full on hug. and she wasn't the one to initiate it for the first time.
ddot's hug was a full-on embrace that lasted a few moments. ddot wrapped his hands around her, and she felt enveloped by his warmth. she wasn't used to being hugged so tightly by him, but it made her feel better. after a few moments, ddot pulled away and looked at her. Zoey felt a bit better after the hug.
ddot cups her cheeks, "zoey—i know i be mean ta ya ass half of the time but deadass—i loved the shit you jus pulled right there fo me. me. i appreciate you deadass zo." he stutters though his speech, and zoey at this point—she couldn't not smile now.
it was so rare for ddot to say something nice to her, but when he did it made her feel like she was on top of the world.
"i like you." zoey blurts out randomly which caused ddot to drop his hands from her face, scrunching his eyebrows together. zoey shakes her head frantically, grabbing his hands back and interlocking them.
she looked away when she felt her neck heating up. "no—i mean like i like you as a friend you know. like i like all my friends it's not like yours special or anything. not that your not special but like in this context like—you are special right but not like i'm your not when j said that because you are special."
ddot could only bite his smile away, she had said a whole bunch of nothing but she still man aged to make ddot feel better then he was a couple minutes ago.
ddor let out a sigh, his heart racing as he brushed zoey's hair out of her face. he could feel the warmth of her skin against his, and it made him feel happy. he placed his forehead against hers and closed his eyes, savoring the moment. zoey smiled at him, and he felt his heart skip a beat.
"this not corny for you dot?" she teased, her voice soft and playful.
ddot kisses his teeth—pulling away and switching their positions so that Zoey's head was leaning against the wall. He looked her straight in the eyes, his own eyes filled with emotion. "zoey," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
ddot looked her straight in the eyes. "zoey."
"yeah?"
"i like you too," he said, his voice filled with sincerity.
zoey felt her heart swell with emotion as she looked into ddot's eyes. she felt like she had complete her job in someway—she had taken his chain away from him in the hopes that he would like her, and now he did.
ddor reached out and took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. now she felt guilty, she had finally gotten what she wanted but ddot didn't.
he didn't have the chain he wanted.
zoey looked away immediately because she felt like if she looked ddot in the eye he would figure something out—even though it wasn't even possible for him to be able to do that.
ddot could obviously tell there was something weighing on zoey's mind she looked at him, her eyes filled with regret. he let out a sigh—this would be the first time that he was comforting a girl again and it wasn't against his will.
"zoey.. mama wassup." ddot looked at her, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. at this point the only thing zoey wanted to do right now was cry in his arms and apologize for taking his chain away, but she didn't.
and that was one—if not the worst mistake she could have made.
zoey l took a big breath before closing her eyes. "i was called in the office because they said.. they might know who might've token your chain."
zoey didn't even wanna open her eyes to see ddot's face because the only thing that was coming out of her mouth right now were straight lies. she didn't know why she was lying, she just felt like if she gave him a little hope it would burn off some hatred he had.
ddot furrows his eyebrows, "fuck you mean by that? they think you stole ma shit? that's why they called you in?"
zoey bit her lip softly before nodding, it wasn't a lie but it wasn't the truth.
ddot rolled his eyes, "this school steady be pissin me off cause why they think you took my shit. so mother plucking aggy bro.. that shit dead just pissed me off cause why they always doin so much."
zoey felt bad cause that was the first time she's heard ddot defend her like that—she smiled because she's know that now ddot and her were real friends. despite their differences and the things that ddot was going through right now, he still defended ended her name.
she knew she made the right choice with defending him with caleb. well it didn't really matter because either way she was gonna defend him.
zoey didn't care at this point because this moment felt like full bliss, ddot was talking to her like he was now comfortable with eyed and it made her heart melt so bad—she wanted to melt too.
at this point she wasn't even listening to anything that ddot was saying because she knew that ddot was officially her friend. like that was her friend, not nobody else's.
as much as zoey would like to think that stealing a chain and becoming friends with the person she had wanted to for so long was gonna work just like that, it didn't, and she was gonna have to face the consequences for that.
wether she liked it or not.
