Season Six, Episode Ten
Holidaze

Max was having the best week of her life, it was kind of hard not too. Everyday, the memory of Mark proposing popped into her head and she couldn't help but feel warm inside.

Telling her friends was a huge highlight as well. Callie was the first person she told, she had broke down crying, then insisted on being the maid of honor and then made Max tell the full story of the proposal about 10 times.

Derek was the first person Mark told and well, no one walked away with dry eyes. They had invited over Derek and Meredith for dinner and they had spilled the news over a glass of wine.

Lexie and Graham were next and for Max's sake, neither of them cried but that didn't stop Graham from going on a long 'I'm so proud of you' tangent. Although, Max originally planned on Graham being a bridesman, her and Mark ultimately decided that he would stand up with Mark.

Leo, Monty and Christina came after. It was no surprise that Max's brothers pulled Mark to the side and threatened him. The biggest surprise of that night was Mont and Leo confessing that Mark had asked for his blessing since Max's Dad wasn't there to give it. That made Max cry for about 2 days straight.

Miranda and Max's Mom Piper were last. They all had gotten lunch together, a girls day was what they called it. Max knew that if she told them first, she wouldn't be able to go through the rest of the week without crying uncontrollably. And she was right. Even though Miranda was not one to show emotions she couldn't help herself but let the tears roll down her face. It wasn't until Piper spoke up that everyone truly lost it. Pipers only living daughter is getting married and even though Robert wasn't there to walk his little girl down the isle, everyone knew that he would fight his way to be there in spirit.

Although, it hasn't even been a full month of getting engaged, both Max and Mark knew that they wanted it to be a small wedding and the backyard of their house was the perfect place to do it. They gave themselves 5 months to plan before getting married and Max really wanted to surprise the few that were going to be apart of her wedding.

"When did the bleeding start?" Lexie asked as she held the cotton up the the boys nose as it bled.

"This morning, he's had these before. I just... I've never seen a nosebleed go on like this" Mrs. Jacobsen told Lexie.

"There's blood on Timmy, Mom"

"Mr and Mrs. Jacobson, can we see you over here for a minute?" Max looked over at Derek and then back at the parents to give them a warm smile.

"Go ahead, we'll be fine" Lexie said when they looked back at their son.

"Nicholas has what is called an arteriovenous Malformation" Derek told them, once they came over.

"It's a cluster of tangled blood vessels in his brain, it's what's causing the bleeding" Max informed them more, making sure they understood.

"In order to stop the bleeding, we need to remove it"

"You mean like brain surgery or..." Mr. Jacobsen stutters.

"I'll do everything I can to protect the brain tissue and minimize damage" Derek reassured.

"I'm really sorry and I know it's scary but we have to go in right away" Max tried to reassure them with a smile but of course everything was terrifying when it comes to your child.

Max stood in the ER happily talking to one of the nurses about the ring that Mark had gotten her, "I know, he did really good" She said, smiling down at the ring, playing with it a little.

"Excuse me" Max turned her head and saw a blonde girl, maybe around 18 standing behind her, "I'm looking for Dr. Mark Sloan"

"Oh, well you see the patient who was burned trying to deep fry a turkey? Mark is the one trying to help him but also is the one making him scream" Max smiled at her, pointed to her new fiancé. "You can go ahead and go over there if you want"

"Whose that?" Callie asked, walking up and standing next to Max.

"Who?" Max asked, which made Callie point at the blonde, "I don't know, she might have an appointment with Mark"

"Dr. Sloan?" The girl hesitantly asks.

"Yeah" Mark says, turning his head to look at her and then turning is again to get a really good look at her. This made Max roll her eyes.

"Hi. Um, so this is a little weird but I'm.. my name is Sloan Reilly and uh, my moms name is Samantha Reilly and um... I'm pretty sure your my Dad"

Max dropped everything that was in her hands, making a huge mess but when Callie did the same, Max's mess didn't seem that big.

"Cal..."

"Yeah"

"Did she, uh, I-I think I heard"

"Yep"

Max looked around a notice her coworkers that also heard, Lexie and Alex had there eyes completely wide which didn't make Max feel any better.

"Sloan and uh, Sloan? Why don't we go into the meeting room?" Max told them softly, almost resting her hand on Marks shoulder but pulled back before she could touch him.

Once they got into the room, Mark took a seat and Sloan sat on the opposite side of the table while Max stood in the corner about to puke.

They stared at each other for awhile before Sloan spoke up, "Why is that lady yelling at the man in Spanish and what is she holding?"

Both Mark and Max turned there head and saw Callie yelling at Graham holding a DNA kit.

"Don't worry about it" Max told her, bringing her hand up to bite her nails nervously while pacing and she knew Sloans eyes were on her.

"I'll worry about it if I want too. Who even are you other then some nosy creep pacing in the corner?" Sloan glared her little teen eyes at Max.

"That's Max and don't speak to her like that. I don't care where you came from but respect is how we do it around here" Mark finally spoke up, looking at Sloan with an equal glare.

"Hi" Callie said once she walked into the room, "How is everyone?"

Mark responded with a great, Sloan responded with a fine and Max responded with a glare.

"Okay, so have we broached the question of a paternity test? Cause I brought supplies" Callie said, holding up the kit and then setting it on the table.

Although, Max wanted to stay, she couldn't. She had Nicholas Jacobsen's surgery and that was a bigger priority.

"Did you know? Did you know that Mark had sex with some Samantha Reilly girl and now 18 years later Sloan Reilly pops up in my hospital?" Max asked Derek as they began surgery, "She's not even that much younger then Lexie! Can you believe that?"

"You don't remember Samantha Reilly?" Derek asked her, looking up.

"Am I suppose to? There were probably a lot of Samanthas" Max sighed.

"Remember that night when we all went out, I think it was me, you, Edith, Mark and Sunny. We went to that high class party that Edith got us into, it's was like right before you and Mark started dating. I think it was the night that Mark said he liked you for the first time"

"Mark told me that he liked me then slept with some girl?" Max asked him, her voice went lower and she was shocked.

"Uh, well, yeah?" Derek raised his eyebrow, "There could be a gaggle of Sloans, Sloan Jones, Sloan Smith, Sloan Sloan" Derek laughed at that.

"Uncalled for and extremely mean"

"Ah, damn it. Son of a bitch" Derek sigh, "I can't access the feeders"

"So... what does that mean?" Lexie asked.

"It means I can't get it, I can do a temporary fix but once he starts bleeding again, which he will, there won't be anything we can do" Derek told her honestly.

"So we're just gonna send him home to die?" Lexie asked.

"Happy thanksgiving, Jacobsen family" Max said, sighing sadly. If there was one things Max hated most in the word, it was telling parents that there was nothing more they could do.

After the surgery, Max and Derek made it to the Jacobsens room to let them know the news.

"I-I-I don't- I don't understand. You-You said that- that he would die without the surgery and now you're telling us we're supposed to just take him home?" Mr. Jacobsen asks, he was upset and overwhelmed and rightfully so.

"Right. Well, I've stopped the bleeding temporarily but the only way to remove the A.V.M. safely is through the sinus" Derek explained further.

"Well, why don't you do that?" Mrs. Jacobsen asks.

"Because there are no instruments that can maneuver through a nasal cavity this small and get the appropriate angles" Max responded carefully.

"Why not? Who does that? Who invents this things?" Mrs. Jacobsen looks at the doctors tearfully and scared.

Max made it back to the netting room, she was out of breathe from running and she really needed to sit down. After awhile in the quiet room, Callie looked over at Mark.

"Mark, now might be a good place for your to say something... out loud"

"Dude, are you, like, high or something?" Sloan asks,  trying to mock the situation.

"Sloan" Derek says, walking into the room.

"Yeah"

"Yes"

"Oh god" Max says aloud.

Derek's lets out a little chuckle, "Mark, I need you on something. Max, I might need you too"

"I'll be there in a minute, I, uh, I just need to talk to Callie for a second" Max nods her head to the two men and then looks at Callie, "Can I see you in the hallway?"

"Sure. Sloan, we'll be right back"

Once the step into the hallway, Max starts speaking rapidly, "A child, Callie? A whole ass human who is claiming to be the daughter of my newly made fiancé? Are you kidding me? I think this might be a joke. Is the room hot or is it just me cause I think I might pass out and well that's no fun. He has a kid, Cal. How am I supposed to tell Maeve or my Mom or Month or.. oh god, Callie how am I supposed to tell Leo?"

"Max, Max!" Callie yells, holding her shoulders to make her stay, "You're not going to faint so shut up and it'll be fine, you're M&M you can get through anything. Take things one step at a time, you don't even know if she really is his daughter"

"Did you- did you just come up with a "ship" name that also is the name of a freaking candy?" Max flung her hands in the air, "Oh god, I think I'm going to have a panic attack"

"What's going on with her?" Miranda asks as she walks by.

"There's a girl here claiming to be Marks daughter that no one knew about and now Max is either going to pass out or have a panic attack" Callie explained.

"Oh get up" Miranda snaps looking at Max who was crouched down, "Are you kidding me? It's Mark Sloan, after the countless of stories you've told me are you seriously that stupid to not at least wonder if he has a child out there? You're not that stupid, Max. Get over it and face it head on, it's not like he'd chose her over you"

Max snapped her head right up, "You think he'd chose her over me? Callie do you think he'd leave me? I mean, I didn't sell my house after he bought us  that one so I guess I could move back into that house-"

"I swear to god, Maxine" Miranda whisper-yells, "That man ain't leaving you. Stand up, take a deep breathe and go talk to him"

Max, Callie and Maeve stood in the kitchen with aprons on, trying to make a thanksgiving feast. Arizona, Lexie and Graham sat on the island chairs and watched them cook.

"You need 3 cups of chicken broth, not 2! Did you read the book?" Maeve rolled her eyes and grabbed the measuring cup and chicken broth from Callie.

"You know, ever since you turned 11, you've very bossy" Callie joked.

"Oppose to any other time? I know what I'm doing" Maeve sassed back, not even bothering to look up.

"Oh, crap. Graham, can you go pick up Malakai? I've got stuff on my hands" Max asked, when she heard her son cry.

Mark walked in just in time, "Hey Bubba, Malakai is crying and Graham looks a little scared to hold him. Can you go get hi-" Max stopped her sentence when she say Sloan trolling behind.

"Who are you?" Maeve asked, pointing at the girl with a whisk.

"I'm Sloan"

"Mark, can I talk to you like right now?" Max dropped the knife and takes off her apron. Walking down the hall into the formal living room. "What are you thinking?"

"What are you talking about, Max?" Mark furrowed his eyebrows.

"Why do you think it's a good idea to bring some random girl into the house with out kids? You don't know her, Mark! I know the results came back positive but she could still be a con artist trying to steal our money" Max yelled, flinging her hands around.

"Shes not a con artist, shes my daughter, Max! I can't just ignore that" Mark replied.

"I understand that! But I don't know her well enough to just have her sit in our house and talk to our children and I can't believe you would even think that this would be okay" Max sighed, "If you want to get to know her, fine I don't care but don't expect Maeve to want to and I won't let you force her"

"You're supposed to be her step-mom" Mark yelled.

"I'm not supposed to be anything to a girl I hardly know and don't expect me too. I feel like I'm a pretty understanding person, you know? But this... this is just irresponsible" Max pointed to the direction of the kitchen, "And by the way, I remember who Samantha Reilly is. That night you told me you liked me but ended up naked with her in a random bed? Yeah right, Mark"

Max began to walk away but Mark grabbed her wrist, "She has nowhere to go, I'm just trying to be a good father"

When she turned around, she could tell how hard this was for him, "You are already the best Dad, to Maeve and Malakai. She's 18 years old, she grew up without a father, what makes you think she wants one right now?" She watched his expression falter, "Fine, she can stay here but she'll be staying in the private house in the back, I don't want her here in the main house until I know her better"

Mark thanked her by kissing her, "Maeve's food smells delicious"

The two walked back to the kitchen, everyone was trying to keep themselves busy. "Who wants wine?" Callie said once she noticed that they were back.

"Ooh, I do" Sloan perks up.

"Yeah, absolutely not" Max shakes her head and hands the minor a soda.

"Right, Maeve can I actually have you set up the table? You do it the best" Mark gives his daughter a smile.

"Is this just a way to make me leave the room? You could've just said that, Dad" Maeve takes the apron she had on and sets it on the counter before making her way to the dining room.

"Dad?" Sloan asks looking at Mark.

"That's Maeve, she's my daughter" Mark turns his head over to Lexie who was now holding Malakai, "And this little guy is Malakai" He says, grabbing the baby from Lexie and holding him up.

"Kids? You-you have children?" Sloan stutters.

"Maeve just turned 11 a couple of days ago and Malakai is only a couple of months old" Max nods her head, she could tell that this was all getting to her, "Actually, Sloan. Why don't I show you around the house?"

Sloan gave her a small nod and Mark gave her a loving look, "Alright, so just doesn't his hall is the front room. It's kind of a big space for what we use it for so we don't have a clear idea on how to decorate it and this over here is the bathroom, just in case you need a little breather. I know it can be hard"

"You're telling me" Sloan said, "What's up with Maeve? She just seems a little... off"

"Sloan, I understand that you're curious which is normal and I don't mind curiosity but next time, why don't you think about how you're wording it and how it may come off?" Max shook her head and headed on tot he next room. "This is the living room, this room is the spare and upstairs is just where me, Mark, Maeve and Malakai sleep"

"Where am I sleeping? Mark said I could stay here?" Sloan looks around the house, she was impressed and for some reason it unsettled Max.

"You'll be sleeping in the private house in the back. Let me show you" Max opened the patio doors and walked out of the house, leading Sloan on the pathway to the second house, "It's a basically a seconds house on the land, it's got a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom"

"I can't stay in that house?" Sloan ask, pointing to the house they just came out of.

"Sloan, I'm not trying to hurt your feelings, really. It's just, as a Mom and as someone who doesn't know you very well, I can't let you stay in the house that my kids sleep in. It's not that I think your a bad person, I just- I'm overprotective and I love my kids" Max said carefully, she didn't want the girl to feel bad or feel anyway other then understanding, "I'm open to getting to know you Sloan and once the time comes, I'll be more then happy to set up a room in the main house for you to live in"

"Yeah, whatever" Sloan rolled her eyes and walked toward the main house, leaving Max stunned. Somehow, she knew that this wasn't going to end good.

Christmas Eve came faster then anyone had hoped. Sloan was still a brat and Max was still trying to come around but Maeve, she was blatantly letting her know that she didn't like her.

Meredith, Derek, Mark and Max stood together, watching the tv as it showed the procedure that Nicholas Jacobsen will have.

"And this does through the nose to the base of the skull and then I drill the bone off" Mark showed Meredith.

"Well, what happens one you drill the holes?" Meredith turns to Derek and asks.

"We put the miniature staple clips on the vessels"

"With what instruments?" Meredith asks.

"We don't have it. Not yet" Derek tells her honestly.

"But we will" Max and Mark answer at the same time.

"We're, uh, still trying to figure out how to build it but we're on it" Mark tells Meredith fast, fearing that she would think that it was a mean to an end.

Max turned around when she felt someone behind her, Miranda sneaked beside Meredith and Derek.

"Uh... I would like an in invitation to your home for Christmas dinner. I know it's very late for me for me to be asking for such an invitation given that it is, in fact, Christmas Day. However, I have a very worried father and if I don't look like I have some sort of life, he'll never leave. I have a bowel infraction to repair and then after that, I'll be free to come to your home" Miranda shifts her glances between Mark and Max, she seemed nervous to even be asking if she could come over for dinner.

"Bailey. What makes you think that you weren't invited?" Mark asks after a moment of silence. Of course she was welcome

"It's our fault. We just assumed that you already knew that you were welcomed into our home, we didn't realize that it could've created a 'am I or aren't I' situation" Max places a hand on Marks forearm, silently telling him to stop laughing, "Of course you and your father are welcome, Miranda. The more the merrier"

"Thank you" Miranda sighed happily.

"The chief just cut off the funding for the equipment" Arizona walks into the room, looking frazzled.

"What?" Mark and Max said together and then Derek followed after.

"We're way over budget and Nicholas is running out of time"

The group walked together to where the Chief was, Derek had came up with a solid plan that they all hoped to work. Max silently walked with, she was uncertain on how this was going to play out considering the new circumstances.

"We want out bonuses to go towards finishing the prototype for Nicholas Jacobsen" Derek said, standing in between Max and Arizona.

"Sorry, you can't do that" Richard looked at Derek but the travels down to Max.

"No, but it'll be like a donation" Arizona said, trying to argue in there favor.

"They're out bonuses" Mark speaks up, squinting at the man.

Richard looks at Max, she could tell he was having a hard time with this, "There aren't going to be any bonuses this year" She told them.

"Merry Christmas" Arizona murmurs.

"I'll pay for it, just tell me the numbers and I'll write the check" Max spoke up after a few moments of silence. The Jacobsen's can't lose there son because the hospital is running out of money.

"I'll split it with you" Derek looks over at Max.

"Me too" Arizona joins.

"Thank you" Max smiled greatly at them. The three of them turn there attention to Mark, who was staying silent.

"I have a teenager. What if she wants to go to college?" Mark try's but fails to not come off as cheap.

"Have you met her?" Arizona quips making Max and Derek laugh.

Max shrugs her shoulders, "I started a college and other expenses fund for her when I opened one for Malakai"

"What? When did you do that?" Mark looks at her confused.

"When I opened one for Malakai?" Max told him again but slower, "I was already there and I felt that if Sloan really wanted to go to college then she shouldn't have to worry about it being covered or if she didn't want to go, that's fine. She'll get the money when she turns 23, just like Maeve and Malakai"

"Fine, I'm in" Mark looks down at his soon to be life with adoration.

"Thank you. I'll get back to you with numbers" The Chief tells them, holding back Derek for a little.

The rest of the began walking down the hall. Max felt a hand grab her wrist stopping her from moving, "Mark?" She asks questioningly.

"I, uh, I just wanted to thank you for what you're doing for Sloan" Mark tells her lowly, looking into her eyes so she knows he serious.

"What? Of course, Mark. I may not be keen on the idea of her but I'm in love with you and she's your daughter therefore, she's mine too. Besides, there isn't anything I would do for my family" Max smiled up at him, taking the nape of his neck with her hand and pulling him down to meet her lips. "I love you"

"I can't wait to marry you"

The day finished like a blur and Max's house was filled with the people she loved. Richard and Arizona were on the couch singing Baby it's cold outside, while Owen played the guitar, Max couldn't help but notice the hopeless glances him and Teddy, the new Cardio fellow were giving each other.

Maeve and Sloan were arguing over something and Max was sure that Maeve was the one who started the fight, "Your kids are fighting" Max leaned into Marks side and watched as their kids argued.

"Our kids" Mark whispered lovingly.

"How is Malakai the only quite Sloan in this house?" Max asks, looking over at Derek who was holding him.

"He's used to the crazy"

"Thank god for that" Max whispers.

"You two over here thinking about another one?" Leo asks, looking at them with a playful grin.

"Not one that comes out of my vagina" Max replied back fast, making his grin turn into a frown.

"Either way, the Sloans and Mallards have a big heart to open up to anyone" Leo tells them before spotting his wife in the corner and walking towards her.

Max walks into her kitchen as Meredith follows behind, she offered to help with the plates and Max couldn't refuse. When you're feeding this many people, help was definitely needed.

"Beautiful family you have out there, Max" Mr. Grey walks in with a glass and tells her politely.

"Thank you, Mr. Grey. I hope Maeve hasn't been too overbearing, I understand that I can be to much for the people who don't know her" Max gives him a warm smile, she loved it when people spoke highly of her family, she knew they were an amazing bunch and she was glad that people see it too.

"Nonsense, that little girl is going places" Mr. Grey lifts his drink up for a cheers of his own.

"I appreciate that. I give thanks to the people around us, like Meredith or even Lexie. My daughter to very fond of powerful women and you sir, have two. You should be proud of your family as well" Max couldn't help but let in a little unnoticeable jab but the way his face falls and Merediths rises, she knew that it was in fact noticeable.

"He's drinking... isn't he?" Thatcher leans against the island as asks, "Richard. He's off the wagon"

Max musters up the most polite smile she can give, "Mr. Grey, I do hope that you enjoy your time in my home" She avoids the question altogether and grabs the plate of green beans and walks out of the kitchen.

Right after Max finished setting the table, everyone who was working late, walked into the house. As everyone took there seats, Max couldn't help but glance at the people she was sharing the day with. She was lucky.

"The house looks beautiful, Max" Lexie compliments with a smile.

"Thank you, Lexie" Max tells her happily.

"Callie?" Derek looks over at Arizona and asks.

"Working"

"Oh, that's too bad" Derek frowns. It was too bad, everyone would have been happy to see Callie at this dinner table.

"Here, you want some stuffing?" Teddy looks over at Owen and asks.

"Thanks" He smiles back at her.

"Oh, how'd Kelsey do?" Teddy looks over at Miranda and asks.

"She did good"

"Whose Kelsey?" Derek wondered.

"A girl with no heart. I had to do a laparoscopic bowel repair while the poor thing was awake on the table" Miranda looks around the room full of doctors.

"Miranda, mind your manners. Even if surgery is your whole life, it doesn't mean you have to talk about bowels at the dinner table" Her father, Mr. Bailey tells her.

Max narrows her eyes at the man, setting down her napkin to get ready to defend her friend until she felt Mark place his hand on hers telling her not to say anything.

"My child is healthy" Miranda speaks up after a moment of silence.

"Excuse me?"

"He may not be with me tonight but he is healthy-"

"I didn't say he-" Mr. Bailey tries to interrupt but Miranda kept going.

"And he's well-loved, he's a well-loved boy and he's a happy boy and staying in an unhappy marriage-"

"Now is not the time or place-"

"Staying in an unhappy marriage, a marriage that I've outgrown, a marriage full of ultimatums and numbness and resentment-"

"Miranda-"

"That is not the kind of life I want to model for my child. That is not what I want him to believe married love is. Look, I know what possible. I know what's out there for me because you taught me well. You and mom showed me what true love looks like so I chose not to settle and I'm happier for it, even if I'm alone at Christmas. My child is healthy and I'm happy" Miranda looks down at the table, everyone was averting there eyes, except for Maeve.

"And you know part of my happiness is the fact that I got to repair a women's bowel and save her life today and that's gods work. Which makes this appropriate Christmas dinner conversation"

"Right" Max says a little too loud while everyone gave quote 'yeahs'

"I'm happy and my child is healthy and that's enough for me today, Dad. That's enough" Miranda finishes.

"Amen" Max whispered silently.

"Green beans anyone?" Arizona asks, lifting the plate.

"Ooo, yes"

The night went on smoothly, the love, the happiness and the gratefulness was shown throughout each and everyone. It was a night full of thanks and being appreciative of what they have and praying for what they don't.

New Year's Eve came as fast as Christmas did. The night was a slow one for the Mallard-Sloans, Max was in the kitchen with Sloan and Maeve cooking breakfast and talking about the morning.

"Some kid told me today that nobody likes a no it all. I was confused because I don't care if anyone likes me in the first place" Maeve says aloud, startling the two.

Max looks at Sloan with wide eyes, "Well, uh, that's a good way to think. Not everyone's gonna like you and if you walk through life trying to appease everyone, life won't be worth much"

"My life is going to be more worth it then those stupid kids" Mage grumbles, "What about you Sloan?"

"What about me?" Sloan asks, taken aback by the sudden question.

"Is your life going to be worth it? Like Mom and Dads?"

Max shoots Sloan an apologetic look, "Maeve, I'm not sure if that question is a nice one"

"Why not?"

"Because maybe the life you think is worth living isn't the same one Sloan thinks is worth living. Everyone has different dreams and goals, isn't that nice?"

"I like being the only person like me. It's fun being smart" Maeve states with a shrug, "I guess, you don't have to be like me Sloan"

"Thanks, Maeve" Sloan chuckles softly.

"What's cooking? It smells great in here" Mark walks into the kitchen with a smile, walking over to Max and giving her a quick kiss.

"Sloan found this recipe for waffles, I've never seen it made like this so we figured why not try it" Max tells him simply, holding up the mix.

"I'm pregnant" Sloan blurts out, making the room go quite. Max and Mark state at the girl, they couldn't say anything, they didn't know what to say.

"You had sex?" Maeve asks, pointing the spoon at her.

"Uh, Maeve, honey. Why don't you go wash up for dinner?" Max places her hand on her back, pushing her slightly out of the room.

Max turned her attention to Sloan, she looked nervous, "When did you find this out?"

"Before I got to Seattle. It's why I dropped out of school and why my Mom kicked me out. Look, I know you guys don't owe me anything but I know you guys wonder when I'll leave and I-I" Sloans sobs became louder, making it hard to finish her sentence.

"Oh, honey" Max walks over to the girl sitting in the chair and brings her into a hug.

"I don't have anywhere else to go" Sloan cries out.

"You can stay here for as long as you want, we can schedule your doctors visits and we'll help you out with any expenses" Max squeezes the girl a little lighter as Sloans arm wrapped around her.

"It's okay" Mark speaks up soothingly, walking over and wrapping his arms around the two of them.

They didn't know how this was going to turn out but they were going to do everything they could for Sloan and her baby.

The later that day was an off day for Max, she was feeling a little out of it after the conversation with Sloan last night which also made it a long night. They discussed treatment and routines and explored her options. Sloan wasn't sure what she wanted to do and that was okay. Still, the memory of last night was still playing in Max's head, even as she talked to the Jacobsen's.

"He's in hypovolemic shock, he's lost too much blood and I didn't want to have to do this but we're gonna have to put a tube down his throat to help him breathe" Max bends in front of Nicholas with her stethoscope, listening to his breathing sounds.

"Nicholas"

"We need to tube him right now" Max looks up at her nurse.

"Don't tube him. Bag him till we get to the O.R." Derek walks into the room in a hurry.

"The O.R.?" Mrs. Jacobsen looks at him and asks.

"We finished the instruments"

"We did?" Max looks at him, hopeful.

"Yeah, we're gonna operate. I just need you to sign a consent form" Derek says, handing them a clipboard with the form on it.

"Nice entrance, very hero like of you" Max smiles at him.

"I like to make an entrance" Derek smirks at the parents and grabs the clipboard from them.

Max, Mark and Derek stand in the operating room with Nicholas on the table. Max was standing at his head like Derek and Mark were on either side. They had the nose clamp already in place and the new instrument was working smoothly. Lexie and Meredith stood in front of the monitor to watch for anything the other kissed and Graham was in the corner watching Nicholas anesthesia.

"How's it going? Is the instrument holding up fine?" Max asks Derek, not willing to look at anywhere other then Nicholas.

"It could bend a little more gently" Derek quips.

"Don't get all critical. Thing cost me a fortune" Mark looks up at his friend and jokes.

"I could use one more day to practice. Inserting the clip applier" Derek informs his team.

"Why don't you try torquing it a little to get a different angle" Mark tells them, "There you go"
