Season Five, Episode Twenty
Sweet Surrender
Today was going to be an exciting day, at least Max hoped it was. Callie father was visiting the hospital today, she had met him only a handful of times but that was when Callie was dating guys and not girls.
"Is he here yet?" Max looked at Arizona as they walked to the nurses station.
"If you're talking about Calliopes Dad, then the answer is, I don't know cause I'm not gonna meet him because we just started dating and it's way too soon" Arizona turned to the nurses station and handed Max a chart.
"And Cal's okay with that?" Max asked, sitting down on the empty chair. If she didn't have this baby soon, she was gonna flip.
"Yeah, her idea. The mans here for one day, then he's gone. No muss, no fuss" Arizona smiled, taking out her pen and hand it to Max so she could sign off on a few things.
Max looked up at the opening elevator, both Callie and Mr. Torres walking out of it and then she noticed George walking toward them. Oh shit, she thought.
"Run. Run for your life" Callie whispered very loudly.
"What do you men run for my life?" He stopped and looked at her.
All of a sudden, Mr. Torres grabbed George by the collar and slammed him against the wall, "Oh crap"
"Give me one good reason I shouldn't kill you right now" Mr. Torres told him, his teeth gridding together after every word.
"Please, if you're going to kill him at least do it off hospital property" Max pleaded with the man as she walked closer.
"Dad, Stop it" Callie rolled her eyes at Max before looking at her Dad.
"He committed adultery" Mr. Torres replies back with the same tone as before.
"Who hasn't? I slept with him before we were divorced so technically, George isn't the only one who cheated" Callie told her Dad while pointing at a passing Graham.
"Oh my god, you slept with Graham?!" Max shouted, walking closer to Callie so she could see the look on her face clearer.
Before Graham could scurry off, Mr. Torres let go of George and grabbed Graham instead, "Oh, god"
"Give me one good reason I shouldn't kill you right now"
"Graham Dumont. Grand to meet you" Graham told him, his face was getting redder by the second.
"Okay, throwing George around that's fine but you can't just throw Graham like that. He's skinny and fragile" Max put her hand on Mr. Torres', slightly telling him to let go.
"Yeah and Graham's just a friend. I'm happy now, okay? I'm dating someone now and I'm happy, okay?" Callie pleaded with her Dad once again, looking at Graham he nodded along with her to agree with everything she said.
"Christ" Graham said as soon at he was let go, straightening his coat before walking away from the older man with Max following after, she figured Callie needed privacy to talk to her Dad but that didn't stop Max from silently praying for Arizona and Callie.
Max almost felt bad for Miranda, having to work with Max was a little tiring but add Arizona Robbins into the mix, well that was just exhausting.
"Meeting Callie's Dad was so not on the agenda for today. I mean, he seems like the kind of man who needs a little preparation before meeting his daughters girlfriend" Arizona laughed a little at the thought of Mr. Torres, "But you should've seen the look on his face when I-"
"Okay, can you stop doing that thing?" Miranda said cutting the young doctor off.
"What thing?" Arizona stopped laughing and asked.
"That 'telling me your business' thing. It's my day off, I'm just here to watch you do the fundoplication" Miranda said honestly, which was a little harsh but Max had gotten used to it already.
"You know what? I checked your schedule, you worked a 90-hour week. You should be at home sleeping or playing with your kid" Arizona turned to look at Miranda fully.
"Okay, you can stop doing that thing, too"
"Miranda, that's not what she meant. It's just that Peds can be tough, having a day for yourself and having a break from all this" Max motioned to the sick kids in the rooms around them, "Plus it can be really hard on a family"
"Not mine" Miranda scoffed at the thought making Max squint her eyes at her, "My husband is very supportive, he is... can't wait for me to start my fellowship"
"You didn't tell him, did you?" Max said matching Miranda's expression.
"No"
"Why?" Arizona spoke up and asked.
"Dr. Mallard, it's Jessica. She just had a seizure, she can't breathe" Mr. Smithson stepped out of the room and called out to the doctors.
Max took off her green stethoscope and began making her way to Jessica's room, "She's got Tay-Sachs, we need to get a mask on her"
"Crank it up to 15 liters"
Max looked down at Jessica, stethoscope in hand so she could hear the sound of her lungs, "I'm just gonna put my hand behind your back and help you sit up, okay?" She lifted the little girl slightly, "Good good. You're okay, Sweetie. You're okay, Sweetie. You just need to breathe. Slow, slow" Max watched as Jessica began taking slower breathes, "You're doing amazing, Jessica. Your breathing is getting better"
Max stared at Jessica, the stethoscope stayed on the little girls chest as she tried to slow her breathing, which was getting a lot better then before. "Just keep it nice and slow, Jessica. You're doing good"
They waited a while until Jessica was under control so that the nurse could come in and look at her vitals making Max and the rest of her group to step out and talk.
"Tay-Sachs is always fatal in children, usually by the age of four or five. She's six" Max looked over at her coworkers and smiled before turning around to look at Mr. Smithson.
"I spoke to my friend who's doing fundraising for Jessica and he told me about this place in Mexico and they do experimental stem cell therapy. In a couple of weeks, we'll have enough money to-" Matt looked at Max with hope.
"Matt, Jessica doesn't have a couple of weeks and it's quite possible that she only has a couple of hours. We've talked about this day, we've talk about it a lot and now it's here and I know it's hard and I know it's going to be impossible but we've done everything that we can and you have done everyone you possibly could for your daughter" Max broke the news to him softly and giving him reassurance.
"No. No. Listen, all we need is a little more time. Look, okay, if you read about these treatments..." Matt told her, extending his hand to give her the papers but they fell on the floor instead, "I don't meant to insult you, I-I know you've done everything. I just need a few more days, okay? I just need a little more time, she's a fighter. You know that she'll fight, I just need to get her there"
"Matt" Max reaches out to make him stop talking, "She's not going to make it to Mexico and I am so sorry but the best thing that you can do for her right now is to be here"
"No!" Matt shouted, slamming the stack of papers that he picked up on the ground, "You don't tell me what's best. You don't tell me. I will find a way, I will get her to Mexico tonight. Shame on you for giving up on her. Shame on you, Dr. Mallard"
Max watched as he walked away, her eyes not leaving until he was completely out off site, "This sucks"
Max hasn't talked to Derek since that day in the hospital, which was a couple of weeks ago. He still hasn't apologized and Max wasn't going to make any moves to correct there fallen friendship, if he couldn't come to her directly and tell her that he was wrong then why would she try and make something out of nothing?
But she was still friends with Meredith so when Izzie told her that she was trying on wedding dresses, she couldn't resist. So here she was standing next to Izzie waiting for Meredith to come out of the bathroom.
"Oh, Mer!" Max gushed as soon as she was insight, then looking over at Izzie when she heard a photo being taken.
"Photos are not secret!" Meredith yelled.
"Isn't there a tiara that goes along with it?" Izzie paid Meredith no mind as she looked around the room.
"Ooo a tiara, that could be fun" Max added, "Oh, here put it on"
"Yeah, so we can put the full effect" Izzie agreed with Max.
"N-no-No tiara. I told you simple, it's, you know, buffalo wings at the reception" Meredith explained.
"You can't have buffalo wings, caterers don't even do buffalo wings" Izzie scoffed at the thought.
"Iz, this is a small wedding. Small. And this is a big dress for a big wedding don't you have a dress in your pile that doesn't make noise when it moves or stand up all by itself?" Meredith looked at Izzie, it wasn't a secret the Meredith wasn't a flashy wedding, dove type of girl.
"You're getting married, it's a miracle. MeredithGrey, child of darkness has found someone. Don't you want to celebrate that? It's your day, Meredith. You can't just piss it away on a stupid slip dress and a cheese tray from the grocery store. That will just make me so sad... and I don't want to be sad because I'm already suffering through cancer and that's sad enough" Izzie leaned herself back against her bed and forcing herself to cry so that Meredith would feel bad.
"Fine. Give me the tiara" Meredith said extending her hand so that she could put on the tiara.
"Good job" Max bumped Izzie softly, giving her a praise.
"I know" Izzie smiled back, "Oh, you look like a princess" She said as she continued to take more photos of Meredith.
Max watched as Meredith stood there waiting for Izzie to be done with the photos but since Max's pager beeped she couldn't wait so see the pictures that Izzie took so they'll just have to look later.
"Sorry guys, Dr. Robbins is paging me" Max said holding up her pager and walking out of the door.
The walk to the break room wasn't a long one, in fact it was actually pretty short considering how big the hospital was but as she stood outside of the door, she could hear Callie ranting in Spanish.
"What happened?" Max rushed in and looked at a freaked out Callie.
"...Home, he wants to drag me home. Como Si fuera una niña perdida, como si yo no pudiera hacer decisiones adultas sober mi vida and who I want to spend it with. I mean... es mi vida!" Callie paced around the room, throwing her hands up as she talked.
"Okay, Cal. Stop that" Max turned Callie around so that they were facing each other, "You're upset and we get that but as much as I wanted to learn Spanish, I couldn't because I failed two Spanish classes in high school"
The two watched as Callie continued talking in Spanish, "Why did you page me" Max turned to look at Arizona.
"You're her best friend and I am at a giant loss right now. Not to mention, Matt Smithson is kind of angry at you so I've got a very sick child-" Arizona said looking at Max with pleading eyes.
"Whatever, go. I got this" Max sighed, pointing to the door she just came in from.
Max watched Callie a little longer, she was still pacing back and forth and still speaking Spanish, "Hey! Stop speaking Spanish, cause I've got a very mad Dad on my hands and well, that's not a good thing and plus I do not speak Spanish"
"My Dad is taking me home. He's talking to the chief, and he's making me quit my job and quit my relationship, which he has yet to acknowledge even exist" Callie looked at Max with angry eyes that also held a little sadness.
"Callie, we've talked about this before-"
"You don't understand, there isn't anything he hasn't done for me, okay? Nothing. He's laid for my college, he's paid for med school, I have a huge trust fund because he doesn't want me to worry about anything but being a great doctor. I mean, the man has done nothing but support me his whole life" Callie explained, counting all the major things her father has done.
"Supporting someone and respecting someone aren't the same thing. You can't go threw life knowing that he has this hold on you. A parent should do those things because they want to see there child succeed and have a better life then they did, not because it's a way to manipulate a child into doing what they want in the future. You need to tell him that Cal" Max gave her one final look before walking out of the room and back to Izzie and Meredith.
Max was glad that Alex Karev was on her team, which is crazy to say considering how much they clashed in the beginning but she thought he was pretty cool and sometimes he brought her food.
"Here, this is for you. It's a cheeseburger from Joes, your brother is in surgery so he can't get you food like her normally does during this time" Alex said as soon as Max came into the room, handing her the greasy white bag.
"Have I told you that you're my favorite?" Max smiled as she took the bag.
"Hey!" Max heard the choir of hurt voices in the room.
"What? Once you decide to save children, then we can discuss favorites" Max rolled her eyes, taking a fry out of the bag and eating it.
"Hi" Lexie said popping her head into the room and walking in, "Oh, French fries. God, I love French fries" She looked at Max's bag and grabbed some of the hot fries inside.
"Meredith, let's go" Izzie shouted.
"I feel like this dress is giving me a mammogram. It's squishing my boobs" Meredith called out from inside the bathroom.
"Come on, let's see it" Max called back.
"I'm taking it off"
Max looked immediately at Izzie when she heard her gasping for air, "Iz, you okay?" Alex asked.
"I think she's choking!"
"Izzie? Let's hit her with oxygen, Izzie?" Christina hurries to take her flash light out to check her pupils, "Izzie, speak to me. Can you say something? Izzie?"
"Izzie?" Meredith said, finally coming out of the bathroom.
"I'm not choking" Izzie said beginning to laugh, "I'm joking"
"Okay, you've gotta stop doing that, cause it's not funny" Christina told her, getting a little mad at the blonde.
"It got Meredith out of the bathroom so that we could see her in the dress and it's pretty" Max told the group, popping another fry into her mouth.
"Tell her she has to stop" Christina looked at Meredith, giving her a slight glare.
"Izzie!"
"It's very romantic. It's pretty, right?" Izzie looked at Lexie and asked.
"Pretty" She nodded along.
"And I see you've invited more people to witness my humiliation" Meredith gave Izzie the crazy eyes look.
"No, Derek and Graham still aren't speaking to each other, which makes Mark feel awkward, plus Derek is all mopey because Max hates him and we're heading into a six hour surgery. So unless I can slip this cheeseburger into a sterile area, I'm not gonna make it" Lexie took another French fry and looked at Meredith, "Can you please come and talk to them"
"Fine. Okay. You can go. Christina, will you help her take the dress off?" Izzie huffed out, looking at Christina expectingly.
"I'll be in the scrub room" Lexie said, grabbing a handful of fries before leaving.
"I should probably head out too, now that all the paperwork is done for my patient, there isn't anything left I do so I'm gonna find something to do" Max have the group a nod and then followed Lexie out of the room.
"Nothings going to be okay until you and Derek make up, you know that right?" Lexie glances over at Max.
"I don't know what to tell you, Lex" Max sighed, giving her a shrug.
"Wait, Stop" Lexie grabbed Max's arm to stop her from walking, "You guys have been best friends for years, what is more important then that?"
"This hospital is" Max spit out, "God knows that this hospital couldn't take another law suit, were barely holding on as it is"
"It's just a hospital, it doesn't compare to decades of friendship" Lexie said trying to reason Max's feelings.
"It's not just a hospital, Lex! It's home for me, I feel my father in every creak and crack of this place, every time I turn the corner to see a new group of interns, knowing that my Dad worked his ass off so that people like you can get the teaching and education they deserve to become great doctors" Max looked at Lexie flustered, "this place is the one thing that me and Leo are getting from him and knowing that Derek knows all of this and continued to disregard this place like it's nothing, well, I just can't mend a friendship when respect is only one sided"
Walking away from the intern, she continued to go somewhere she was needed or at least tried too.
Max sat outside of Jessica's room, watching as Miranda held that girl to show her that there was nothing to fear, it was a hard sight to see but it was a pretty powerful as well.
"Do you mind if I sit?" Derek asked, pointing to the chair next to her. Max looked up at her and then back at Jessica, shaking her head softly.
She felt him move the chair out so that he could get in comfortably, she also felt him stare at her.
"What do you want, Derek" Max asked him but continued to stare at the child.
"I came to apologize" He told her honestly, which made Max scoff, "I am really sorry, Maxi"
"Don't call me that, Derek"
"Oh, come on, Max" He chuckled a little as he leaned back into his seat.
Max snapped her head to him when she head the sound leave his mouth, "Why do you think this is funny? Will it be funny when I get the letter in the mail saying that I have to close this place down because we are going broke from all those pretty lawsuits or because nobody wants to come here to see two doctors fight? I have spent a lifetime covering up your poorly made decisions and I am tired of it"
"You haven't done anything for me" Derek breathed out.
"Look at this place, Derek. You wouldn't be standing here if I wouldn't have helped you all through high school, every big exam or the ACTs or even when I spent all goddamn night with you to study for your intern exam. Do not give me that shit because we both know damn well that you are here because of me, I have broke my back so many times so that we could succeed together but you pay no mind to me or my considerations" Max turned her chair so that the other doctors couldn't hear the argument that was going on between the two, "I was a way better friend to you then you were to me and all I asked was for you not to make things harder so that I could keep this place"
Derek looked down and sighed, "Look, I know and I'm sorry that I'm an ass. I know what I did was wrong and I know that this place is the only thing you'll have and I truly am sorry"
"Why did you do it, I pleaded with you and you continued to do it" Max closed her eyes for a brief second, fighting with Derek was a lot harder then she thought it was.
"I don't know. I'm a neurosurgeon with a god-complex, I think that I'm always right" Derek said, listing his excuses.
"That isn't a good reason to be a bad friend and I feel like I'm explaining this to you and you're not even listening"
"I am, Max. I am. I grew up with your family and I know your feelings and how this hospital means everything to you and Leo but I can't take back what I did that day, I wish I could. You're my Best Friend, Maxi. I can't lose you, I'll try my best not be an ass" Derek apologized again, this time he was actually looked at Max.
Max shook her head with a sigh, "I can't be so willing to forgive you... at least not right now"
"But you'll tell me when you do?"
"You'll be the first person I tell" Max told him giving him a tired smile. Watching him get up from his chair and walk away from her, kind of made her emotional. Once upon a time, she would've done everything for him but know she wasn't sure how far she would go.
Max sat alone in a barely lit room. Moments ago, she was holding Callie as she cried for a father that would understand but know she was alone and her tears still haven't stopped.
"Is there anything else you need before I go?" Miranda walked into the room and asked.
Max wiped the tears off of her cheeks, "No" She said, shaking her head as she did, "You want to sit awhile?"
"No, I do not want to sit. I've been sitting and lying down all day..." Miranda stopped and let a shaky breathe out.
"Miranda-"
"Holding a child. If I wanted to spend the day holding a child, I would have stayed home to hold my own child. I didn't do a single medical thing today, I didn't even put a band-aid on a patient. I'm-I'm just tired. I... I'm done" Miranda let out another sigh, she was frustrated but not because of the reason she thinks.
"Are you going to tell Tucker?" Max asked her softly.
"What would I tell him?" Miranda asked her with a shaky voice.
"That it's more then just cutting, Peds is more than just cutting and what you did today was heroic and you know that" Max kept her eyes trained on her friends, Miranda was a magnificent human and doctor.
"Okay. Maybe I'll tell him that" Miranda nodded her head at Max before walking out of the room.
Max looked around the room, she wanted to go home. She didn't want to stay in this dark room by herself, so she got up and made her way to the lockers to grabbed the clothes that she came in with.
She spotted Mark waiting for her in the lobby, she watched as he extended his hand for her to grab, which she gladly did.
"Hi" She breathed out.
"How was your day?" Mark looked down and kissed her head.
"Uh, well. Not very good but that's okay" She told him honestly.
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked, looking down at her with a concerned face.
"Not really, I just want to go home" She said pulling his arm so that she could get to the car faster.
"I love you" Mark told her before she got into the car.
"I love you" Max replied back, giving him a smile before getting into the passenger side.
"Derek invites me to drink a couple of beers with him and Graham, I figured I'd ask you first since we are mad at him" Mark told her, not taking an eye off her.
"It's fine, Mark. Just because I'm mad at him doesn't mean you have to be" She said with a slight laugh, it was cute though, how he considered her feeling.
"We're a team, Maxi. We are mad at people together" He explained, giving her his signature grin.
She watched as Mark walked in front of the car to get to the drivers side, opening the door and starting the car. He looked over at her and leaned in to give her a small peck on the lips before driving away from the hospital and too the house. She really needed a day off.
