Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Season two episode twelve
Max was getting Maeve ready for school and since it was close to Christmas Maeve insisted on wearing her pink reindeer sweater. She picked up her daughter and walked down the stairs so they both could get some breakfast before heading to school and then the hospital.
"Do you want cereal or yogurt?" Max asked Maeve, holding them both up for show. Maeve scrunched up her face and pointed to the strawberry yogurt.
"Good choice Mae Mae" Max said turning back around to face her cabinets, she grabbed a plastic bowl and poured some yogurt into it. She put the bowl in front of Maeve and gave her a spoon.
Max also pored some yogurt into a bowl for herself, grabbing a spoon then sitting right next to Maeve.
"You know, Mommy's been thinking, maybe we should get a puppy" Max said talking to her daughter, they were living in this big house and it was just the two of them.
Maeve immediately looked at her Mom, "Puppy?" The little girl questioned with doe eyes.
"Is that what you want? A puppy?" Max asked looking at her daughter with a big smile, how could she get so lucky.
The seven year old nodded her head "I think we should get a big one!" She said holding her hands out to show her Mom how big she wanted the dog.
"Well how about if you're super good, which I know you will be, we can go get you a big puppy. Does that sound good to you?" Max asked her daughter, who was staring right back at her with a happy face.
"Yes!" Maeve said clapping her hands, Max couldn't wait to see how Maeve would react when she actually sees the puppy.
Max, Leo and Christina walked into Justin Davidson's room, a ten year old boy who needed a new heart.
"Good Morning, Justin!" Max said cheerfully as she walked closer to the boy, all she got was a frown and a stare. She still continued to give him a big smile before she turned to greet his mother.
"Marion, How are you doing this morning?" She asked looking at the excited Mother.
"I'm doing well, Dr. Mallard. I'm anxious but very excited as you can tell" Marion replied back, of course those feelings would be normal for any parent.
Marion then turned and greeted Leo, "Hi, Dr. Mallard"
Leo gave her a small smile, "I'm here with good news, great news actually..."
The patients Mother began to smile, "You don't mean that..."
"U.N.O.S. Called, we have a heart" Leo said telling Marion amazing news.
Max smiled at her as she began to laugh in shock, it's not everyday that you get to hear that your son is going to have a better heart.
"Now I'll be operating this morning" Leo said to Marion then looking down at Justin.
"You hear that, baby? Santa Claus is bringing you a new heart for Christmas" Marion said leaning down to touch her son.
Justin looked at Leo "Tell that fat-ass to give it to someone else. I don't want it"
Max looked around the room, noticing his Mom's face drop and Christina's smile. She then looked back at Justin who was still looking at Leo with a cold stare.
"I'm sorry, Dr. Mallard. He's tired today" Marion said apologizing for her sons behavior.
Leo sat on the edge of Justin's bed to show that he was ready to listen to whatever reason the boy had. "I'm tired every day, I hate Christmas every day and I'm not having another stupid operation"
The male doctor sighed, "Justin, I know surgery can be scary and I even see it in the most toughest patients but you need this heart. You're scared and we all get that but me, Dr. Mallard and your Mom will be with you every step of the way. You've worn out your last one"
"His last one?" Christina asked confused, she had no clue what they were talking about.
"Justin had a heart transplant as a baby, but his heart hasn't aged as well as he has" Leo told Christina so she could better understand why this is so important.
Max walked closer to Justin's bed putting her hand on the side bars "Do you understand that, Justin? Your heart just can't keep up with you anymore and you need a new one"
"I don't care. I don't want it" Justin replied looking at Max.
She gave him a small smile, "Can you tell me why you don't want this new heart?"
The little boy looked down not giving any of the doctors a reason why he didn't want to heart.
Max walked up to Derek and Addison slamming her charts on the counter, they both looked at her startled and confused.
"Oh good, I have your attention" Max said smiling at her to friends.
"Well it's not like you have us much of a choice" Derek said scrunching his eyebrows.
"Shut up" Max said turning to Addison "I want a puppy"
Now the two Shepherds were even more confused "Maxi, you hate dogs" Addison said laughing a little.
Max groaned, laying her head on the counter "I know! But I'm lonely and there's not much to do with a seven year old and I want a dog okay!"
Addison holds her hands up in mock surrender "Okay, Max is getting a dog"
"I am getting a dog" Max said in an assertive tone.
"Max is getting a dog?" Graham said from behind, Max turned around and saw both him and Callie with confused faces.
"Yes! Why is that so hard to believe?" Max said throwing her hands up in the air.
"Max, you once told me that a Dog tried to rip your hand off just for petting it" Callie said folding her arms to her chest, Max rolled her eyes as she laughed.
"Yeah but, I'm getting a puppy so I can condition it to be nice" Max told her friends with a shrug of her shoulders as if it was going to be the easiest thing in the world.
"That's not how that works Maxi Pad" Graham said giving a little laugh.
"I seriously hate all of you, and when I get my puppy you four do not get to come around" Max said pointing to all four of the humans next to her.
"Hey! I didn't say anything" Derek said lifting his hands up in shock.
"Fine, Derek is the exception" Max said walking away from her friends laughter.
Max was standing next to Izzie and Christina outside of Justin's room writing some new information in his chart about his surgery, the three girls sat in silence until Izzie started to sneak looks at Max.
"What Dr. Stevens" Max snapped setting her pen on the counter, Izzie walked closer to the Doctor.
"I'm nosy okay, I like to get into everyone's business-"
"Just ask me, Dr. Stevens" Max said sighing, she was sure that the interns question was going to push some boundaries.
"You're scary and it's surprising because you're the head of Peds and your kind of nice from what I can tell but I'm really not a good judge of character, you're hot but your single with a kid. Oh and you and your brother are like polar opposites" Izzie said spit firing her nosy questions.
Max was fully looking at Izzie now, kind of impressed on how much she was wondering, "I'm scary because for someone reason that's the only way for a women to get respect, especially when they know she has a daughter, and Pediatrics is hardcore, I get to save little humans lives and I get to see the looks on the parents face when I tell them that their baby is going to be okay, and sometimes I have to sit with them after I tell them that there was nothing more I could do so I think I'm pretty freaking great. I don't like being mean, not when I don't have too, I find it truly disgusting when I see women tearing other women down just to get on top. I was in a relationship for seven years but he decided that I wasn't worth following and of course once I found out I was pregnant with his child I mailed him a letter, which I did not get a response to may I add, so I've just been focusing on my job and my daughter. And as for me and Leo, he is not my clone, he is his own person so of course there would be differences." Max said finally stopping her list on answers, "Would you like to go on a date to figure me out or was that good enough?"
Izzie looked at the older doctor in shock, wondering how she could talk so fast "uh- I'm a good"
Max was about to say something is but they heard Justin's monitor beeping, Christina and Max ran into the room, Christina moved Marion out of the way while Max moved the pastor.
"Code blue!" Christina yelled after she pressed the the button.
Max laid Justin's bed down so she could do better compressions, she ripped open his gown just in case she had to use the paddles. "He's in V-FIB!" She yelled as the nurse brought over the paddles and gave them to Christina.
"Charge the paddles to 100" Christina said loudly so the nurse could hear, the nurse put some gel on the paddles and Christina put them on Justin's chest.
"Charge" They heard the nurse call out.
"Clear" Christina flaked back once she was in the right spot.
Everyone looked at the monitor to see if there was any change, then they looked back at Justin once they heard him cough.
Christina sighs as Max looks proud that the intern knew what she was doing.
Christina followed after Max and Leo after they left the room, "Can you get him back on the donor's list? I mean, if it's a bad heart-"
"It's not a bad heart" Leo told Christina.
"Well, can you get him back on the list?"
Christina asked still following the two doctors.
"He's waited two years for this heart, Dr Yang. He has to fight for it like he actually wants it. We can't make him decide to live, he has to make the decision for himself" Max replied, she's been with Justin since he first came to Seattle Grace Hospital so she knew some what of how he felt.
"Okay, medically speaking, is there anything else we haven't talked about?" Christina asked still pressing Leo about it.
"The way you're feeling right now, how you feel like there is nothing else we can do, is why I have to believe in something bigger then me, I have to put faith in something that can be hard to see sometimes but at least I'm trying" Leo said as he stopped to look at his girlfriend.
Max looked at the two scrunching her eyebrows in confusion, she felt like she was intruding in a private matter so she walked quietly back down the stairs and out the door, taking the elevator wasn't so bad.
Max asked Derek to come over and watch Maeve while she went and picked up the puppy, Max decided to get her now since Maeve was always good and she didn't have to prove anything.
She walked into her White House holding the puppy, she put a nice Red bow on her collar for a little exaggeration. "Mae Mae! I've got a little surprise!" Max yells out, she heard little running footsteps coming toward so she bent down to be on Maeve's level.
"Puppy!" She screamed in happiness as she ran over and gave the little thing a hug.
Max and Derek laughed at the little girl "What do want to name her?" Derek asked bending down to pet the puppy.
"Aslan!" Maeve said still hugging the dog, Max smiled at the name, the two of them went and saw Narnia in the theaters and Maeve was obsessed.
"What an amazing name!" Max said picking up her daughter so the puppy could breathe, "Tomorrow we have to get some dog toys and probably a dog bed, would you like to pick them out?"
Maeve shook her head yes still looking at the new member of the family.
"Do you want to ask Uncle Derek to come with us?" Max asked Maeve, she knew that Derek could never say no to his god daughter so it was fun to ask.
Maeve got up and walked over to Derek, sitting on his lap "I think you should come"
Derek looked down at her and smiled "Of course! I would love to come!"
Derek and Max got up from the floor leaving Maeve with Aslan, they walked to the living room so they could sit down but it was also the perfect spot because they could still see Maeve. Max yawned and looked at her watch, 9:37, she groaned as she put her head on the back of the couch.
"It's getting late Shep, if you want to stay here you know where the guest room is but if you want to go home, you also know where that is" Max said putting her hand on his knee and patting it.
"I think I'll stay here for tonight, make sure everything's okay with the new dog" Derek said coming up with an excuse to stay here.
"Right, well I love you and goodnight" She replied back walking over to pick up Maeve so she could also go to bed "Oh and will you put Aslan in her kennel, I don't want to leave her out and have her chew on something"
Derek nodded his head tiredly "I love you too Max, and I love you Maeve!" He called out waving the two girl goodbye.
"I love you too Shep" Maeve said which made the two adults smile at the nickname she used.
Max tucked Maeve into her bed and kissed her goodnight before shutting of the light, she walked into her room so she could do her night routine, once she was done she changed into her Christmas pajamas and climbed into bed trying to get a good nights sleep.
