Raindrops keep falling on my head
Season two episode one

Max walked through the hospital silently, she was absolutely tired, when she heard the voice of someone she was not expecting, she turned her head toward the main lobby and saw the redhead standing with Derek.

"Addi!" Max called out to get her attention, Addison looked over and saw the two girls making there way over.

"Wow, Maxi! How are you?" Addison said, she seemed a little hesitant pulling her into a hug.

"I'm amazing! What about you, what made you make the trip over?" Max asked, pulling away and smiling at Addison then looking over at Derek who looked flushed.

"I'm a- I'm good actually, I came to get Derek back" Addison told the shorter girl pointed at Derek with her thumb.

"Oh well that's great I guess, I have to put Maeve down actually, I'll call you later?" Max told Addison backing away from the former couple.

"Wait, um Maxi" Addison called out to the girl before she left "I'm sorry, I was just wondering, why don't you hate me?"

Max looked at her confused, hate her why? "What do you mean?"

"Addison" Derek said trying to get the redhead to stop talking, Addison and Max looked at him for a moment before going back there conversation.

"Well for sleeping with Mark of course" Addison aid smiling sheepishly, she was kind of confused herself, how could Max forget about that.

"You slept with Mark?"

Max was walking into the hospital with light feet, she was trying to avoid Addison, and well Derek too if she was being honest.

"M2, I heard about She Shepherd" Miranda said walking next to her, Max looked to her side and gave Miranda a look, silently telling her not to talk about it.

Once Miranda left, Max walked to her wing, she was definitely not in the mood for any Addison drama right now.

Max was sitting in the conference room wanting to get a moment of peace before she had to deal with the patients. It only seemed like 5 minutes of silence when her pager went off, she sighed looking at it before getting up from the chair and making her way to her wing.

She was walking up the stairs when she saw Leo, Derek and Addison talking, Max rolled her eyes shaking her head at the sight of Addison.

"I was just checking to see if Dr. Mallard secured the in-" Addison began to say.

"Intern you requested. He did." Meredith said walking up to the three of them. Max decided to make herself known at that moment, Addison was not going to give Meredith hell on her watch.

"I would like to know why you're asking for interns, if you haven't noticed you are in my hospital wing" Max said standing next to Meredith "See check it" She said pointed to her I.D that said she was the Head of Peds.

"Right, well I'm the ob-gyn" Addison said looking at Max.

"Trust me Dr. Montgomery, we don't need you" Max said looking her in the eyes before telling Meredith to follow.

Max and Meredith walked into the patients room with Addison following close behind, once Addison was in the room Max walked over to the chart that was on the table opening it up.

"Define T.T.T.S" Max asked Meredith watching her stand next to the patient.

"Twin-Twin transfusion syndrome, conjoined fetal twins" Meredith replied back fast, she wanted to show Addison that she new what she was doing and that she was good at it.

"Connected by" Addison asked putting on her glasses so she could read the chart as well.

"Blood vessels in the placenta" Meredith said rapidly.

"Meaning?" Max asked looking at Addison, she still couldn't believe that Addison would do something like this, and to her nevertheless.

"One twin gets too much blood, the other too little, endangering the lives of both" Addison said when Meredith hesitated "I'd expect you to know that, Grey" Max rolled her eyes at Addison attitude.

"You told me there wasn't much chance that anything could be done but-" Julie said sitting up from her bed a little.

"T.T.T.S. Is usually impossible to correct, unless you happen to be one of the handful of surgeons in the world who knows how to separate fetal blood vessels, which luckily for you, you have two" Addison said smiling at Max as she said the last part "So we're gonna get you into surgery tomorrow, if you have any questions at all, please ask Dr. Grey. From what I have seen, she is one of the hospitals most popular interns" and she's back.

All three of the girls walk out of the room to give Julie some space "I could've answered Dr. Mallards question if you had given me the chance"

"Chin up Grey. I'm this tough on everyone, not just the women my husband sleeps with" Addison said giving Meredith the patients chart, Max grabs Addison by the arm and pulls her into one of the empty rooms.

"You don't get to do that, you don't get to treat Meredith like she's the one who cheated on her husband with her best friends boyfriend" Max said pointing her finger at Addison.

"Ex boyfriend" Addison commented, Max looked at her surprised but mostly disgusted.

"Fine, how about this. You cheated on my best friend with the person I spent most of my life loving, the person I wanted to start a family with, the person that you watched me fall in love with" Max took a break to catch herself, "The father of my child, so do not give me that ex boyfriend shit because if I would have gotten my way, he would have been my husband" Max was choking up as she talked about Mark, and it was true, if Mark would have followed her to Seattle she would have married that man in an instant.

Addison looked at her with sorry eyes "Maxi, I-"

Max cut her off "Don't please, just don't" she said holding her hand up to stop the web from talking, Max walked out of the room, stopping to get a moment to collect me herself before turning to Meredith "Order an ultrasound please"

Meredith nodded her head, she heard every word that was exchanged but she wasn't going to bring it up of course.

Max walked into the chiefs room, she had heard that he had to have surgery but with having a six year old daughter and being a surgeon, her time wasn't easy to manage.

"Richard, how are you?" Max asked the older man, whom she considered her friend.

"Dr. Mallard, I'm doing well, thank you. I'm trying to get under the radar so the staff doesn't see me like this" Richard told the girl.

"Right well you'll never believe what I just found out" Max said sitting on the edge of his bed, preparing him for the news.

"Addison cheated on Derek with Mark" Richard said surprising the young girl.

"Wait! How did you know that!" Max exclaimed looking at the Chief with big eyes.

"Word travels fast around here" Richard replied smiling at the girl, Max got up from his bed wanting to see Joe, the man her owns the bar across the street, next.

She opened the door "I'm on your side kid, just remember that" She heard Richard say, she smiled at him then walked out of the room.

She made it to Joe, sitting down on the chair next to him "Hi buddy, how are you feeling?"

Joe looked at her and smiled, throughout the whole hospital staff that comes to his bar, Max was definitely one of his favorites. "I'm doing well actually, better then expected"

"That's good, please don't hesitate to give me a page if you need anything" Max said smiling at her friend, she looked up and saw Alex Karev, one of the other interns here at Seattle Grace and smiled at him before getting up from the chair so he could sit.

Addison, Meredith and Max were standing in Julie's room giving her an ultrasound "See? Bilateral pleural effusion with evidence of sub-Q edema." Meredith said pointing at the picture on the screen.

"In English, please?" Julie said looking at both Addison and Max.

"We've detected what looks like beginning heart failure in the twins. Don't be alarmed." Addison said softly looking at the patient.

"Are my babies gonna be okay?" She asked watching Addison as she did so.

"We are going to go ahead and take you into surgery now." Max told the mother to be smiling at her so she knows that they are going to try there best.

"We're not gonna wait. Book the O.R. Move!" Addison said looking at Meredith as she said the last part.

All three of the Doctors scrubbed in on Julie's surgery, Max and Addison were almost done helping the twins, the operation was running smoothly.

"How you doing there Grey?" Addison asked looking at Meredith for a second.

"Good" Meredith replied looking back at Addison "I'm good"

They were back in Julie's room after she woke up "See? Just a small scar" Max told the lady moving the stick around her stomach to try and find a better sound of the babies.

"And my babies?" She wondered.

"Your babies are doing very well" Addison replied back to her, grinning "and Dr. Grey will be back to check on you a little bit later"

"Actually, I'd prefer it if Dr. Grey were taken off the case" Julie said looking at Meredith who was standing next to the wall.

"Why? Did something happen?" Max wondered, Meredith was a great intern.

"Just reminds me of someone I don't like very much, someone my husband likes a lot, particularly in lingerie. You understand" Julie replied back, looking at Addison.

"No, No, I don't understand" Addison said walking closer to the patient.

"Well, she's sleeping with your husband, right?" Julie asked the doctor, Max looked at Addison wondering what she was going to say.

"Ms. Phillips, I lack Dr. Grey's class and patience, so let me set the record straight. My husband didn't cheat on me, I cheated on him with her child's father, who also happens to be my best friend" Addison said pointing at Max with her thumb "so the wronged women here - Dr. Grey, so I think you owe her one hell of an apology" Addison finished and walked out of the room with Max following after her.

Max turned to get alway from Addison "Maxi" she heard the women call out, Max sighed and turned around.

"Look I know you're mad at me but please I am begging for you to forgive me. I didn't realize that my actions would hurt you this bad" Addison said attempting to apologize.

"Right, you didn't realize. While I was waiting for Mark to be with me and our child, you were having sex with him in yours and Derek's bed." Max scoffed at the lame apology.

"I get it okay, I do but I'm really trying here" Addison said with the most sincere voice she could muster.

Max looked at her for the first time and noticed how sorry she really was "I know Addi, it's just going to take time. Give me time" Addison nodded her head then walked off.

Max started to walk around the hospital to clear her mind, it wasn't helping much but at least she was alone.

"Dr. Mallard!" She turned around to see Meredith jogging to catch up to her. Well so much for being alone.

"Yes, Dr. Grey" Max said professionally.

"I just wanted to say thank you, you didn't have to stick up for me but I just- thank you" Meredith told the surgeon.

"I know I didn't have too, I wanted too, you don't have any grounding here and I wasn't going to watch Addison tear you down for the mistake she made years ago, and she messed with my happiness too so anytime I get to yell at her, will be my pleasure." Max said stopping to look at Meredith.

"Right Im sorry, thank you again" Max watched as Meredith walked away, suddenly she became filled with emotions.

She put her hand on her mouth to muffle the sob that was coming, not wanting to embarrass herself in front of her colleagues, she ran to the nearest on-call room and she cried dropping to the floor not having the strength to stand anymore, she felt a hand on her shoulder, she looked up and saw Miranda looking down at her with sad eyes.

"What happened?" She asked the sad girl, sitting down so she could be closer to her friend.

"I just, I don't know what I'm doing anymore" Max said looking at Miranda's face as she cried.

"And that's okay, it's okay for humans to have those moments in life where everything just seems so hard and that you feel like you're stuck not knowing who you are anymore" Miranda said soothingly, running her fingers through the crying girls hair.

"It was her. Mark decided not to be with me because of her" Max said pointing at the door, in her mind she was pointing at Addison.

"Maybe that's true but that doesn't mean you continue to let her make you feel any less worthy, you've got a family here, you have me, and I'm going to be damned if I let you continue to think that he didn't want you. You're Maxine Mallard, one of the best Pediatric surgeons in the world, you don't need to let a man defy your worth, you've got a little girl at some nice elementary that looks at you with all the love in the world, You are an amazing person Max. You don't want to let that little girl down do you?" Miranda said trying to give Max a little pep talk.

"Yeah, you're right, I've got Maeve to focus on" Max said wiping her tears and standing up, shaking her body to ride herself from the emotions, she smiled at Miranda "I am so glad I met you Miranda Bailey"

Miranda smiles at her opening the door "I find you very annoying, but you're the closest thing I have to a best friend" Max laughed at that and walked out of the room with Miranda.

Max was standing in her kitchen making
cheeseburgers and French fries for her and her daughter, she already got Maeve cleaned up so she could eat dinner and Maeve was now sitting quietly on her chair.

Max took the burgers off the stove and put each on a hamburger bun, putting little ketchup on Maeve's sliced hamburger and just cheese on her own. She put the warm fries on a plate in the middle and set Maeve's food in front of her.

She was about to take a bite out of her cheeseburger when she heard the doorbell ring, she got up to see who it was, and of course it was Derek. Max sighed opening the door "What do you want Derek?"

Damn, she used his real name this time. "I just wanted to check and see if you were okay" Derek said leaning again the door way.

"You didn't care about my well being when you chose not to tell me about Mark and Addison" Max said walking away from the front door to finish eating. She heard the door shut and foot steps following after her.

"Look, I'm sorry, I didn't mean for this to happen. I wanted to protect you" Derek said trying to get Max to see his point of view.

Max whipped around pulling Derek's arm into the next room to Maeve couldn't hear. "Protect me? Where was that protecting when I was crying over Mark because he didn't show up after I sent him that letter? Where was it when I realized that he didn't love me anymore and that he wanted nothing to do with Maeve? Oh right you were busy keeping me from the one thing that I needed to hear to have closure" Max said whisper-yelling at him, she was mad and she felt that she had the right to be. If she would have known that Mark was under someone else it would have been a helluva lot easier to get over him.

"You're right! I know you are but how could I look at my best friends face and tell her the one thing that could also ruin her, I really was trying to protect you and I'm sorry that it felt like I betrayed you" Derek said softly, he didn't want to fight with her, after all she was the only person he had left.

"I know and I want to forgive you but right now I need some time to process and I promise when I do, you'll be the first person I find" Max told him, she was tired of fighting, she had been fighting all day and she was drained.

"Love you like a sister" Derek told Max before walking out, he knew that if he used there old saying on her that it would be easier for her to forgive him.

She looked at him and smiled "I love you too Shep"

Max walked back to the dining room sitting on her chair that was next to Maeve, who looked like she was about to pass out right then and there "Are you tired baby?"

Maeve looked up at her mom and nodded her head and running her eyes, Max picked up her daughter and carried her up the stairs to her room. She laid Maeve down in her bed covering her up with the blanket.

"Night my little girl, mommy love you" Max said bending down to kiss her daughters forehead. She stood up and turned the light off watching the only thing she was ever sure off drift off to sleep.
