Much Too Much
Season two episode ten

Max walks into Dorie Russell's room, a lady who is pregnant with quintuplets, with Izzie Stevens following after.

"Dorie, this is Dr. Stevens" Max said checking on the babies "She'll be working with us on this case" Max looked to her side and saw Addison sneak in.

"Oh, the more the merrier." Dories says looking at Izzy and waving.

Izzie chuckles "Apparently. How far along are you?"

"32 weeks" Dorie says with a small smile.

"And how long is a normal gestation period?" Addison asks Izzie while walking up next to the intern.

"40 weeks, but with twins, 36 weeks is considered full term" Izzie replied back "So with quints, 34 weeks is considered extremely successful"

"Well, just give them some acetaminophen. It's in the medicine cabinet." Tom Russell says on the phone behind the three doctors.

"I plan on going 36 weeks" Dorie says looking at Izzie  "No ones leaving this uterus until I say so" She finished pointing at her stomach.

"The power of positive thinking, huh?" Max said moving the wand on Dorie's stomach to get a better view of the babies.

"Well, that, bed rest and all the medical care you can give me" Dories replied to Max with a smile.

"We're with the doctors now, so I'll talk to you later. Okay bye" Tom says hanging up the phone "Uh, Adams got a fever, which means soon they'll all have a fever. I don't think my moms gonna make it through lunch." He told his wife walking up next to the side of her bed.

"We have 4-year-old boys at home. Adam, Oliver and Graham." Dorie informed Izzie.

"Triplets? You - You already have triplets? Oh I guess when you take those fertility pills, you should read the fine print." Izzie said, the other two doctors looked at her.

"Dr. Stevens" Max and Addison both called out.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I just, I meant it as a-" Izzie said trying to apologize to the two parents.

"It's okay, I'm used to it. I just really wanted a girl" Dories says shrugging it off.

"Yeah, we just didn't bank on 5 girls" Tom said after Dorie talked.

Dorie looked at her husband, "but think of all the clothes and all that pink cuteness"

"Honey, that's your happy place, remember?" Tom replied back to his wife in a joking manner.

Max looked at the two smiling at there little banter, she wished she had that when she was pregnant with Maeve but instead she had a brother who was freaking out and a best friend who wouldn't leave her side. Max walked next to Izzie, taking the chart to write some stuff down.

"Try to refrain from saying everything that pops into your brain, they don't need to hear your crude jokes, not right now" Max told Izzie handing her the chart before walking out.

Max was sneaking up on Graham, he was a anesthesiologists who worked at Seattle Grace Hospital, he went back home to London for a few to visit him mom.

"Rawr" She yelled pushing him a little to intensify the scare.

Graham looked back at Max and smiled "Maxi Pad!" He called out picking her up for a hug.

Max laughed at his nickname "Wow it feels like years Hammy, never leave me alone at this hospital again" She warned pointing her finger up at his face.

"You have Derek and Leo here Max, you were perfectly fine" He said laughing at Max who was trying to seem serious.

"Exactly!" She yelled throwing her hands in the air "I have so much to tell you Hammy" She linked her arm with his and guided him down to the stairs.

Max finished telling Graham all of the juicy gossip that had happened in the last month or two "So Addison cheated on Derek with Mark and didn't tell you, while Derek was here he slept with that intern and didn't tell her that he was married?"

"Right! How is there so much drama in one hospital" Max exclaimed resting her head in her hands.

Graham got up holding his arm out for Max to take "You're right, I am never leaving this place again, I seem to miss out on all the good stuff" Max hit him lightly on the shoulder laughing at his comment.

"I feel like a beached whale" Max heard Dorie say as her and Derek walked into the room.

"Dorie, this is Dr. Shepherd. He's the head of Neurosurgery at this hospital" Max told the pregnant mom smiling at her.

"Hi, Dorie." Derek said holding her file.

"Ooo Dr. Shepherd. I've heard a lot about you" Dorie said grinning at the man.

"All good things I hope" Derek replied back laughing.

"Anyway, Dr. Shepherd wants to talk to you about baby C." Max said looking at Derek to give him the go ahead.

"Lucy" Dorie reminded them.

"Yes, Lucy has a condition called hydrocephalus. It is a buildup of cerebral spinal fluid on the brain" Derek said walking to the side of Dories bed.

"Okay, and that means..." Dorie asked looking at him worried for her baby.

"Excess fluid builds up and it puts pressure on the baby's brain, which could result in brain damage" He told her softly, he didn't want to worry her more then she already was "Here's the good news. We caught it early enough. We can take care of it very quickly"

"How?" Dorie questioned, she began to worry more.

"I'm going to install a shunt to drain the fluid. Barring any complications, you're looking at a full recovery" Derek told the patient.

"So no brain damage?" She asked just to be sure.

"No brain damage" Derek confirmed.

Max looked at the other two people in the room before her eyes landed on Dorie smiling at her.

"Okay, really. Couldn't you have lead with that?" Dorie half joked, looking at Max.

The room filled up with laughter "Good point" Derek said smiling down at her.

Derek walked out of the room with Max following soon after, they stopped at the nurses station to put the file back "So I heard Dr. Grey broke some guys penis"

Derek looked at her and sighed "Yeah that's the word, I've got to go look at him later on today" He didn't seem happy to see the guy his ex girlfriend had sex with.

"They think it's a neuro problem?" She asked him, usually they just give some medicine and send them on there way.

"Look I really don't want to talk about it, or anything that has to do with Meredith" He tells her with a frown, Max gave him a look.

"Why? You're happily married remember" Max said half joking, it's like she had to remind him that he was married.

"Right, happy" He said kind of gloomy.

"You know it's not fair for them" Max asked rhetorically, of course he had to have known, Derek gave her a look, like he didn't know what she was going on about, "You can't have both, you can't tell Addison that you would try and mend your guys' marriage and then go and act like this when I talk about Meredith having a sexual partner. You're leading both of them on and it's really not fair"

"It's really none of your business" Derek replied back to her, he doesn't think what he's doing is wrong.

"If I have to see the sad look on Merediths face or see that Addison is worried that you're just going to leave her at any minute, then it is my business. You don't get to be pissed at Meredith because she's trying to move on, you have a wife that loves you and they both deserve to be happy." Max tells Derek and leaves him to think about what she just said.

She notices Izzie leaning on the wall a few feet away, probably listening to there conversation. Max gave her a small smile before she pressed the elevator button.

Since it was the the weekend, Max didn't have anyone to watch Maeve so the daycare was the only options, And right now she was in the cafeteria getting some food for her and Maeve, a PB&J for her daughter and just a plain turkey sandwich for herself. The elevator doors opened and Max stepped in pressing the floor that had the daycare. About 5 seconds later the elevator stopped and she stepped out walking to the daycare door.

She turned the handle and walked in, looking around to find her daughter sitting at there usual spot but she wasn't sitting alone.

"Addison?" Max called out as she got a little bit closer.

Addison turned and looked at Max giving her a small smile "Sorry, I'll go" Addison stood up from the small table, Max put her hand on her arm.

"It's okay, you can stay" Max told her friend, she put the two trays on the table, she opened the PB&J and gave it to her daughter.

Addison sat back down next to Maeve and started talking to her, Max smiled at the two.

"Addison" Max said, waiting for her friend to look at her "If you need to talk I'm here" She said once she had Addisons attention.

"It's hard" Addison began "I know the way he looks at her, and I know that he wants to be with her but I just can't seem to let him go just yet"

"I understand, but when does it get too much? I waited for Mark for months, wanted him to love me again, but once I had Maeve I couldn't continue waiting around for him, I had to put us first and if that meant getting over him then that's what I had to do" Max grabbed Addison's hand for comfort "and I know you don't have a kid but what I'm saying is that you need to think about what this is doing to you, you shouldn't have to watch the man you love, love someone else"

Addison gave her a small smile as she wiped her tears "I know but it's going to take me awhile to fully grasp the situation, give me a few months and I'll have my head on straight" Max nodded her head, she understood where she was coming from, sometimes it takes longer to let go of something you've known for so long "And I'm sorry, about Mark, I'm a major bitch and I swear that if I could take it back I would"

Max gave her a tight lipped smile "It's not okay but I'm going to be okay"

Max was eating the last bite of her sandwich when she checked the time, 4:28, she had to go check on her patient. She threw away the wrappers from the food and grabbed the trays "Do you want to walk down with me? I'm going to go check on Dorie"

"I would love too" Addison replied as she got up from the small chair.

Max walked over to Maeve and gave her a kiss "I love you sweetheart"

"I love you too mommy" Maeve replied back before giving her Mom a small kiss on the cheek.

Addison and Max walked into the patients room "This is Dr. Shepherd, she's going to help me today" Max told the mother just Incase she didn't hear it the first time Max introduced her, she then started walking to the ultrasound monitor.

"Oh another Shepherd, people must hate you guys" Dorie said looking at Addison.

"You have no idea" Addison and Max both said back.

"Okay Dorie, I'm going to check on the babies" Max told the Mom just so she was prepared.

Max gave her something to ease the pain and put the wand on Dories stomach moving it around to look at all 5 of the babies, she squints her eyes at the screen "Dr. Shepherd can you page Dr. Stevens for me"

Addison nodded her head and grabbed her pager.

It took Izzie almost 5 minutes to get to the room "Where have you been?" Max asked the blonde who was fixing her hair.

"I, um, I- the nurse was here" Izzie stutters looking at the nurse next to her.

"I've loaded her up with magnesium. Start monitoring her toxicity" Max said looking back and forth from Izzie and the monitor.

"Oh, it's too soon, they can't come yet." Dorie said heavily.

"Mom says Graham started puking" Tom told his wife as he walked into the room "What is it? What's going on"

"Dorie's having contractions. The babies vital signs are stable, but your placentas laying low. We're going to have to keep a close eye on that. We want to keep them in there as long as possible" Addison said from beside Max.

"How are we keeping them in there if she's having contractions?" Tom asked the two doctors.

"It's alright hon, they can stop them. You're going to trendelenberg me, right?" Dorie asked looking at Max.

"Yes I am. You've done your reading Dorie" Max replied back going her am impressed look.

"They did it with the triplets. Gravity, remember Tom? It worked fine then, it'll be fine now." Dorie said her breathing getting heavier.

"Hang in there, Tom. There's no time for second thoughts now." Max said lightly trying to put the man at ease.

"We didn't think we'd survive the first week with the boys, and we did, we'll be the same with the girls. We're ready" Dorie said looking at her husband, she was trying to reassure him.

Izzie tugged Dories gown so that it was cover her belly "Well, that's all we can do for now. Dr. Stevens are you on call tonight?" Max asked the intern as she was writing stuff down in the chart.

"Um, No" Izzie replied.

"Well you are now" Max said grabbing the chart and walking out of the room.

Max walked next to her brother giving him a slight tap on the shoulder so he knew she was there, Leo looked down at his sister and smiled "How's your patient?"

"She's actually doing better then I would've assumed, there were some complications with one of the babies but other then that she's perfect" Max told him smiling at the thought of the babies.

"That's great! Remember to page me of you need anything" Leo said folding his arms and putting them on his chest.

"Yeah I will" Max promised "Wait, there was actually something I wanted to ask you, a favor really"

Leo gestured for her to continue "Could you watch Mae tonight, I might have to stay a little longer then planned just in case something goes wrong, I'll repay you, anything you want" Max said clasping her heads together like she was begging.

Leo laughed "Of course, you don't owe be anything, I love that kid and it's not like she's the worst thing ever, only a little"

Max gasped hitting her brother on the shoulder "I've done an amazing job for being a single parent, she's an angel"

Leo put his hands in mock surrender "I know I know, I'm just kidding"

"Seriously though, thank you, I would've gotten someone else to do it but Miranda is spending time with Tucker and Derek is helping me with the babies" Max said thanking him for saying yes "And I need her to be in bed by 8, if she doesn't get a good nights rest she'll be cranky in the morning, her blanky is already in her bag so you don't need to worry about that"

"Max, I know how to take care of my seven year old niece, I've done it before" Leo said assuring that they would be perfectly fine.

"Right, I'm sorry it's just she's my little girl, I want to make sure she's going to be alright" Max explained, since it was only the two of them, Max felt the need to be the best parent ever since Maeve only had one.

"I get it, and I promise she will be perfectly fine"

Max opened her mouth to respond to Leo but her pager went off, she took it off her pants and looked at it, 911, "Shit" She swore under breathe "I've got to go but thank you again!" She ran down the hallway and up the stairs to get to Dories room.

Max ran into the the patients room hearing Dorie groan from the pain "There's fetal distress" Izzie said holding the papers that had the babies vitals on, Max looked to her side and saw Addison run in too, good they could use all the help they could get.

"My contractions are really hurting and I think my water broke!" Dorie panted, she could barely talk with how bad the pain was.

Max lifted up the blanket to check out Dorie's stomach, she looked down and saw a pool of blood "Her placenta's tearing" Izzie stared looking at Max in worry.

"Okay, Dorie, we can not wait any longer, the babies have to come out now" Addison said running out of the room to book the O.R.

"It's okay. We're going to take really good care of you. Just keep breathing" Izzie said reassuring the patient.

Addison came back a kit to hold the blood, "Okay Dorie I'm going to try and stop the bleeding until we can get you into surgery"

"My babies, I can't have them now" Dorie said breathless.

Max walked up the Dorie taking her hand "I know this is scary but we have to do this now, they won't last much longer without the help they need, when you get out of surgery your babies will still be there and we will do everything we can to make sure of it"

"Uh, Dorie, the O.R is prepped and ready to go. Where's Tom?" Addison asked taking off the bloody gloves.

"He's at home with the boys" Dorie said, her panting getting heavier.

"No I called Tom. He's on his way" Izzie told Dorie.

"Izzie got ahead and page everyone on Dorie's team. The list is posted at the nurses station" Max said looking at the fetal monitor.

"No! No!" Dorie said grabbing onto Izzie's arm.

"Dorie, Dorie, you're fine. You're going to be fine!" Addison said in hopes to reassure the patient and to calm her down.

"Nothing about this is fine!" Dorie told the doctors "It's to early! They're too hurt!"

"Dorie-" Addison began to say but Izzie took control.

"You've carries your girls this far. Now it's out turn. You have to trust us to bring them into the world"

"Tom's on his way?" Dorie asked Izzie.

"Tom's on his way" Izzie said back confirming.

Max and Addison looked at each other with a surprised face, then looking back at Izzie giving her a  small 'I'm proud of you' smile.

The team was rolling Dorie to the O.R "Everyone answered there page except Dr. Karev" Izzie said informing Addison and Max.

"Where is he? We need everyone!" Max said holding Dories chart to make sure everything was going correctly.

"Uh I don't know. He was on call last night. He might be asleep" Izzie responded as soon as Max finished.

"Go find him!" Addison said pushing Dorie down the hall.

"Good job guys!" Max said once all five of the babies were out "Now let's go try as save these babies"

Every doctor in the room scurried out to find where they were needed. Max walked into the scrub too and took off her mask and gloves "We did good in there" Addison said standing next to Max.

Max gave her a big smile "We did, and now we got to give them the best chance at surviving"

Addison nodded her head and threw her gloves in the trash, Max began to walk out "Oh and Addison" She said getting her attention "I wouldn't have asked for a better person on my side" She told her once Addison looked up.

"Me neither Maxi, Me neither"

Okay!

If you were in the same situation as Meredith and Addison how would you react?

I'm excited for Mark to show up, can't wait to see how he reacts to Maeve and how Max reacts to Mark reacting to Maeve.
