Season Six, Episode Eight
Invest in love

Max rushed into the hospital after she was paged to come in, she didn't have time to get Malakai ready to go to daycare or Maeve ready for school so she put the task onto Mark who was still sleeping in bed.

"What do we got?" Max asked Alex as she walked into the room. Grabbing her stethoscope from her pocket and hanging it around her neck.

"Laura Young, 30 weeks pregnant, car accident. Head C.T. showed a subdural. Shepherds coming in, baby's in distress, O.B.'s on its its way" Alex told her, still checking out Laura to figure it all out.

"Oh it hurts, it really hurts" Laura cried out in pain.

"Wait, wait. Hold on, move the want up" Max told him, grabbing the wand and moving it up.

"What?"

"Baby's brain is hemorrhaging, she needs a crash 'C' while Shepherd handles the bleed. Get ready to grab a rail and start running" Max lifted up the side rail as Alex did his side, hooking the fluids to the front of the cart, they began punching her out and moving as fast as they could.

"Oh, no. Hold on, hold on. We need the O.R." Max yelled out at Callie and Hunt as they punched there patient down the hall.

"Well, we need it, too. We're already on our way" Callie replied back, still keeping the same pace.

"There's only one O.R. prepped this time of night and we need it" Max told her as they raced together to the operating room.

"No, we need it"

"Minds got a subdural" Max tried to one up her.

"50 broken bones" Callie shot back.

"Struck in the womb!"

"Oh!" Callie yelled when the door opened in front of them, making them stop, "All right, uh, get another O.R. ready now"

Max nor Alex bothered to look back, they kept running until they reached the O.R. doors. They stopped outside of the room and handed her off to the nurses who were already scrubbed so that Alex and Max could get ready for surgery. They hooked her machine to the cart next to her and grabbed the head machine.

Max walked into the room along with Alex, getting ready to get the baby out of the womb to get her stable. The moment passed by in a blur, they've don't this countless of times and Max could do this in her sleep. As they got the baby out, Alex grabbed a small breathing tube to keep the baby alive.

"What's her status?" Derek asked, walking into the room fully scrubbed.

"Moms heart rate and, uh, B.P. has been fluctuating but she's ready for you" Alex said as he looked over the newborn.

"All right, let's prep her for a craniotomy" Derek said to his staff.

"Apgars only 4. we need to get to the NICU right now" Max looked down at the baby and then back up at Alex who nodded in agreement at her.

Once they made it to the NICU, they hooked the baby up with drains and a breathing machine, "Okay, drain is in a great position"

"Yeah, she's breathing over the vent" Alex told her, taking his stethoscope away from the baby's heart, "Maybe we should consider extubating her?"

"That's good but we should watch for apneic episodes and keep an eyes out for her C.B.C. There's still too much blood draining from her head" Max looked down at the little baby and back up at Alex, "I must've forgot my watch, what time is it?"

"Uh, half past 8"

"I've already been awake for a couple of hours and my day hasn't even started yet. Wished my morning was going a little bit differently but I can't even imagine hers" Max said sadly, looking back down at the baby.

"A stroke before you're even born, rough way to start a life"

"No doubt"

Max stood in the Peds wing with two cups of coffee, one for her and the other for Callie, "Hey, I brought you some coffee. Oh, you already have two?"

"Oh, man. I got one for you two, I don't mind having a coffee in each hand" Max smiled at her friend who was mirroring her.

"Just a heads up, when you see Christina she might be a little mad. I didn't wake her up and then I decided not to page her in here and possibly mad at you two for, well, just being here" Leo walked up to the two, taking one of the Coffees from Callie's hand, "I recommend steering clear and maybe just ignore her"

"Oh, that's your plan? Ignore the scalpel hungry animal?" Callie asked, walking in pace with Leo and Max.

"Yes, I must admit but I just need time to figure out something better" Leo quipped, watching at Cristina walked passed the group with nothing to say. Leo left there side and was replaced by Dr. Hunt, who was needed because he was currently head of trauma.

Max downed the rest of her first coffee and threw it int he trash, turning her body to face the team she had today.

"I know this is the first time on a Peds rotation with me for some of you-"

"Not for others" Arizona said looking directly at Christina.

"Anyway, I understand that you guys most likely- especially the new people-, have heard a couple of things around here and I wanted to explain myself as to way I run my Peds unit a little differently around here then what you guys are used too" Max said, looking at the two Mercy west transfers, "This is not general surgery in miniature, these are children, these are somebody's babies. They believe in magic and they play pretend, there is fair dust in their I.V. bags, they hope and they cross their fingers and they make wishes and that is what makes them more resilient than adults. They recover faster, survive worse and they believe. In Peds, we have... miracles and magic. In Peds, anything is possible and today I want you guys to show them that, show them hope"

Max extended her hand for the piece of paper in Christina's hand, who handed it to her after that, she opened the door to her side and had everyone step in.

"Morning, Dr. Mallard"

"It's a wonderful morning, Dr. Wallace" Max smiled down at the new Doctor, "I see that you've already introduced yourself to Mr and Mrs Boyd"

"Yes. Reminds me of Hillary at that age. Such an overachiever" Mrs. Boyd confirmed smiling.

"Dr. Yang, why don't you present?"

"Yeah" Christina said hesitantly, looking around her fellow colleagues, "Excise me, little... doctor boy. Uh, Hillary Boyd, 15 years old, fell off the roof of her house. 52 acute fractures were diagnosed when she was admitted last night and intricate and extremely challenging O.R.I.F. surgery was performed by Dr. Torres and Dr. Hunt this morning before rounds"

"Thank you, Dr. Yang" Hint said from beside Max, who was trying to suppress her eye roll.

"Is she fares well enough today, I'd like to go in tomorrow to repair her subtrochanteric fracture next" Callie told Mr and Mrs Boyd.

"Mmm. Can anyone tell me the proper dosage of ceftriaxone for a pediatric patient?" Max looked around as if she was a teacher in class.

"50 milligrams per kilogram per day" Jackson replied back fast.

"Good! Dr. Wallace can you tell me the proper dosage for this patient if she were 42 kilograms?" Max asked, looking at him expectingly.

Wallace began writing on his paper before looking back up at the Doctors, "2.1 grams per day, if you carry the decimal"

"Carful Dr. Wallace, you might make me out of a job soon" Max nodded her head to the kid, silently letting him know it was time to head back to bed.

"That's it for right now, Mr and Mrs Boyd. If there is anything you need just press the button over there and a nurse will be in to check on you, okay?" Max waiting until they nodded there head before she and the rest of the group walked out.

"Okay, whose presenting?" Max asked once they walked into Wallace's room.

"I am, Dr. Mallard" Wallace said as he crawled into his bed.

"Continue"

"Wallace Anderson, 10 years old -almost 11- been here for 7 months, in and out over the past two years, suffered from short gut syndrome, which means he can't properly absorb nutrition" Wallace presented, doing a fabulous job as he did.

"Correct, Dr. Percy?"

"Uh, 15 intestinal surgeries to date, plus a bowel lengthening procedure which helped for awhile but recently, he's had to go back to being fed through T.P.N." Percy told them, looking at Wallace as he did.

"Yum" Wallace said, shaking his food bag.

"How'd he do this morning?" Mrs. Anderson asked, walking into the room.

"We covered some pretty advanced algebraic conversations" Max smiled at the Anderson's and then down at Wallace.

"Dr. Mallard helps me with my math and science homework by letting me go on rounds" Wallace informs the group.

"We try to keep his life as normal as we can even in the hospital" Mr. Boyd explains.

"But I can skip my homework on Friday, right, since it's my birthday?" Wallace asked his parents.

"Since it's your birthday" Mrs. Anderson agrees.

"What about Dr. Robbins? I heard it was her birthday, too" Wallace looked over at the Blonde who was standing right next to Max.

"I'm afraid I can't skip my homework, Wallace but we can come celebrate with you like we promised" Arizona said, looking at at Max who nodded with her.

"Dr. Mallard" Mr. Anderson spoke before she could leave the room with the rest of the group, "We've requested a meeting later with Chief Webber and representative from the hospital board and we'd like you there, too"

"Of course" Max smiled politely at the Anderson's, "I'll check on you later, Dr. Wallace, okay?" She asked which she received a nod for. When she walked out of the room completely, she let out a sigh. Although she had treated Wallace from the beginning, she didn't know what the meeting was about so that made her nervous.

Max walked into the board meeting with a nervous sigh, grabbing the sides of her coat to make sure she looked alright.

"You treated their son, right? Well, you better pray that you didn't go something to piss them off. God knows that this hospital can't afford another misstep, right now" Jennings said as soon as he could.

"Excuse me? I think you need to take a step back and see who you just pissed of right now, Lawrence" Max scoffed at the man, she didn't care who he was and obviously he didn't care who she was but in a battle between the two, a Mallard would always come up top.

"It's a pleasure to see you again, Paul. Bethany, you look lovely" Jennings said when he saw the Anderson step into the room. Max moved herself to sit beside the Chief as the Anderson's sat in front of them.

"We didn't think Wallace would see his 9th birthday, let alone his 10th and now this week, his 11th" Bethany told them, smiling at the miracle her son received.

"Which is why we'd like to offer Seattle Grace Mercy West's Peds program a gift of $25 million" Paul told them, getting to the point.

"25- uh 25 million dollars?" Max stutters, looking at the Anderson's to see if this was some kind of joke.

"Half to go to research to continue searching for a cure for Wallace's condition and half to the hospital itself"

"This is amazing, Mr and Mrs. Anderson. Thank you" Max let out a joyous laugh.

"Your our good luck charm, Max" Bethany smiled happily, "And tell Arizona we said happy birthday"

The group strayed along Max and Marks house, they had gotten together the next day for breakfast to celebrate to donation the Anderson's made.

"I always new Wallace's parents had money but I didn't realize they had that kind of money" Max told them still in shock about the situation.

"That's get libraries named after you kind of money, save babies in Africa and has dinner at the White House regularly type of money" Arizona finished, adding her own shock into it.

Max looked over and Mark and winked, grabbing her drink sitting next to Mark on the couch, "People don't give me that kind of money" Mark said, squeezing Max's leg, "You guys have an unfair advantage, working with children"

"Oatmeal, side of fruit, wheat toasted hold the butter" Callie said as she handed the plate full of food to Graham.

"Thanks, dear"

"You know what? That money is gonna make such a difference for so many patients. It's-It's really amazing" Callie told the group, walking over to Kax and giving her cheek a kiss.

"Maybe I should start doing cleft-palate kids, everyone's a sucker for those" Mark said aloud, making Max slap him slightly in the shoulder.

"25 million dollars is kind of cool, right?" Arizona asked.

"Best birthday gift ever" Lexie spoke, smiling at her friends.

"Birthday gift?" Callie asked looking at her girlfriend.

"Yeah. Cause the moneys a gift. I mean, technically it's for the hospital and not Arizona but since your birthdays on Friday" Lexie further explained.

"How does little Grey know about your birthday and I don't?" Callie turned to her girlfriend, confused.

"Birthdays are just days like any other days. I don't like them, I don't celebrate them. No big deal. 25 million? That's a big deal" Arizona rushed out.

"Crud. I'm gonna be late" Max looked down at her watch, "Maeve, are you ready honey?" She shouted to make sure her daughter heard her, "I'll take Malakai with me today, you mentioned you had something you needed to do this morning?"

Mark fidgeted slightly, "Y-Yeah, that sounds great. I'll uh, see you later?"

Max furrowed her eyebrows and looked around, noticing suppressed smiles around the room, weird, she though.

"Mom, I'm ready" Maeve said coming down the stairs with her breakfast plate, "Thanks Aunt Callie, for breakfast. It was the second best breakfast I've had in awhile, next to mine"

"You're welcome sweetie, glad you at least enjoyed it" Callie chuckled at the little girl.

"I've got to get to school. You guys will probably be here later or something but I guess I can still say goodbye" Maeve looked around the room, the spark left her eyes as she realized something.

"You don't have to hug them if you don't want too, sweetheart. They still love you all the same" Mark told her gently, watching as his friends nodded along.

"Quite frankly, hugs are overrated" Graham spoke up, smirking at the girl making Max look at him with gratitude.

"Okay, bye" Maeve lifted up her arm to give them a small wave before heading to the rack to get her backpack.

"Thanks you guys, I know she can be a little..."

"Don't worry about it, like Mark said we all love her just the same" Callie told her, swatting her off like it wasn't a big deal.

Max bent down and grabbed Malakai who was in his playpen and setting him down in the car seat by the couch, "I'll see you later?" She looked down at Mark.

"Definitely" He said, a glint in his eyes.

Max walked into Wallace's room to check on him, "Is he still sleeping?" She whispered to Mrs. Anderson.

"No" Wallace answered.

"He had a bad night" Mrs. Anderson tells her, sitting up from her position.

"I can still go on rounds, I feel better just give me a second" Wallace's assured her but the look on Mrs. Anderson's face told a different story.

"Actually, how about you stay and rest for the morning and then I can come get you for evening rounds instead" Max opted before he could get out of bed.

"Okay"

"He listens to you more than he does to me" Mrs. Anderson told her, smiling slightly.

"Well yeah. She's a doctor, mom and you're just... well a mom" Wallace explained.

"Oh, okay. Well how about you close your eyes and you let me do what moms do, okay?" Once Wallace close his eyes, Mrs. Anderson brought her hands above his body, "Bad dream, Bad dream go away. Good dreams, good dreams here to stay. Bad dreams, bad dreams go way, good dreams, good dreams here to stay"

When Percy walked into the room, it made Bethany stop, "You have to do it three times for it to work"

"Oops. One more"

Percy handed Max the charts and stepped to the side so they weren't disturbing the Anderson's.

"I want you to repeat his chemistries and get an abdominal series. He's had some bad nights before but I just want to double check and make sure we're not missing anything" Max told Percy, seeing him nod before leaving the room, she turned back to face the Anderson's.

Just as she was about to talk, her pager went off 9-1-1 it read, "Sorry, I've got to step out real quick. I'll be back to check on him in a few, okay?"

Max ran out of the room and headed to the NICU, Laura Young's baby was not doing good.

"How's she doing, Karev?"

"She's dradying down and she lost access, I'll start a C-pap" Alex answered her quick.

"Dr. Mallard"

"Sorry, Percy. Not right now"

I think you're gonna want to see this, it's the x-rays on Wallace Anderson" Percy told her, holding the films by his side.

"Fine, show me"

"See? He has dilated loops of bowel" Percy said pointing.

"Flip it" Max told him, "flip. God damn it. He has another bowel obstruction and he's not compensating. Okay-"

"I've got this, go" Alex told her, taking over the baby.

"If you need anything, Karev. Page Arizona, okay?" Max shouted before running out of the room.

Max stood in front of Mr and Mrs. Anderson, letting them know what she found.

"Are you saying you can't do more surgery on him or you won't?" Paul asked her, trying to wrap his head around the situation.

"It's not a battle between if I can, it's a battle with if whether or not I should. In my opinion, Wallace isn't strong enough to handle another operation" Max told them, she knew the operation wasn't a good idea

"But with the surgery, how long would he have then?"

"I'm not confident enough that he'll even make it off the table" Max told them honestly.

"But if he did, how long?" Paul asked again.

"Paul, Bethany. I strongly advice-"

"How long?" Paul interrupted her and asks again.

"Around two months. I'm sorry but the moment that we've been fighting so hard for the last two years, it's here" Max watched as Bethany broke down in a son, "I would prepare yourself and I would prepare Wallace on what's going to happen"

"You think I've been pouring all this money into research so that you could find a cure for some other kid?" Paul asks aggressively.

"Mr. Anderson-"

"No. You have to do this surgery" Paul told her.

"Mr. Anderson, I just-"

"You buy our son two more months, you buy him more time so that we can buy him a cure" Paul looked between the chief and her, letting them both know that he was serious.

"I'm sorry"

Max walked away from them, she needed to get into the right head space but Richard had to follow her instead.

"Max. Those aren't people who hear the word no, if they want surgery on their son, they'll get surgery for their son whether or no you're the one to do it. You've been with this boy since day one and I believe you can do this successfully. Don't walk away now unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can't"

"The surgery is a really bad idea, Richard" Max sighed into her hands.

"But is it impossible?  In your hands, is it impossible?"

"Fine"

"Fine?" He repeated.

"I'll do it, I can try"

Max tapped softly on Wallace's door, it was surgery time and Max felt like she needed to take him there herself.

"Hey there, Wallace. You ready to go? I was gonna take you to the O.R. myself" Max told him, trying to smile but it was coming off way to forced.

"I've been here awhile now, Dr. Mallard and I've seen kids go home and go away. Like Evan, the kid from down the hall with asthma last month, he died the day before he was supposed to be discharged"

"You are not Evan" Max told him.

"And Chloe, the heart girl? She was hear for three weeks before she died"

"No one says you're going to die" She tried to reassure him.

"I've been here for seven months, I've been here the longest of anyone on the floor by double"

"Wallace-"

"They say it's like going to sleep and maybe it is but what if I go to sleep and I have nightmares?" Max couldn't help but stay silent, she didn't know what to say. She knew this surgery was a bad idea and she knew there wasn't anything she could say that would help.

Max stood beside an unconscious Wallace, she was in the middle of his surgery and she was stressed.

"More traction, please. Damn it, the mesenterys really friable" Max said letting out a sigh, "Percy, a little help on the suction. This is not a good idea. This surgery was not a good idea"

"Could we get a washcloth for Dr. Mallard, please?" Percy announced.

"I'm fine, it's fine"

"Just take a moment" Percy told her. Max looked up at him, turning her head so that the nurse could dab the washcloth on her forehead.

"Thank you, Percy. Pick ups, please"

Max stayed at the party held for Arizona for a little while after Wallace's surgery, but she didn't want to leave the hospital and make it seem like everything was okay, when it wasn't. She didn't want to leave because she didn't want to jinx's them situation and make it turn bad because she thought she was out of the woods.

And maybe only 30 minutes later her pager went off.

"Start and EPI drip now. More irrigation, just keep it coming. Give me a Babcock clamp. Damn it, I need for light" Max told her staff, trying to get Wallace's bleed under control.

"Pressures dropping to 68/40, pulse is racing" Percy informed her as he grabbed the light and put it where she needed it.

"Oh come on, Wallace"

"What the hell happened to the Anderson boy?" Richard asked, storming into the O.R.

"He's in septic shock, his body was too unstable to handle the surgery which is exactly what I said earlier today"

"Well, maybe I can help" Richard told her.

"Absolutely not! You can't because as long as you are here, I can feel your desperate need to please Jennings and bring this hospital millions of dollars. You can't be in here, Richard. You need to leave my O.R." Max yelled at him but she didn't have time to feel bad because Wallace was the only person who needed her.

"I need more suction!"

After the surgery, Max let out a shaky sigh and she continued to do so until she was met with Jennings and the Chief.

"How'd it go?" Richard stood up and asked.

"Damn it" Jennings said after Max shook her head no.

"I'll let them know you did everything you could" Richard told her as she passed by him not uttering a single word.

"Wait, Dr. Mallard. Don't we have to tell the parents, let them know he didn't make it?" Percy asked, stopping Max from leaving.

"No"

"What do you mean, no?" Percy asked her confusingly.

"I mean no. I will not be speaking to Wallace's parents, actually I won't be standing anywhere near them. Lawrence and the Chief are going to take care of it because as far as they are considered and as far as the Anderson's considered, I just killed their son and if they were to ask me what happened, I would answer honestly, that I had killed there son. I am responsible and hell maybe they should sue. I am a liability, I am risking there chances to receive 25 million dollars and that's not in the best interest of this hospital" Max closed her eyes briefly, "Am I close, Lawrence?"

"Yeah I think we're on the same page"

"We are furthest from the same page, not even in the same book"

After awhile of contemplating, Max decided that she needed to see the Anderson's and they need to see her.

"Max" Bethany said once she saw her standing in the doorway.

"Dr. Mallard, this is a very sensitive time" Jennings looked up at her wish a hard face.

"Leave me be" Max's voice tensed up, glaring at him to let him know she wasn't going anywhere.

"Excuse me?"

"I'm not going anyway, unless the Anderson's want me to leave" Max looked over at Bethany and she shook her head no, telling her that she didn't want her to leave.

"It just doesn't feel real, any of it. It just... it just doesn't feel real" Bethany told her I bet and over again, looking around the room at the stuff that was left behind.

"Bethany, would you like to see your son?" Max asked her softly, watching as he head nodded slowly.

Max guided the Anderson's downstairs so that they could see their son with Jennings and Richard following closely behind.

They all stayed quite to let the Anderson's have the moment and peace that they needed, "Bad dreams, bad dreams go away. Good dreams good dreams here to stay" Mrs. Anderson began sobbing making her stop what she was doing and saying.

Max looked up at them and over to Bethany, "Good dreams, good dreams here to stay. Bad dreams, bad dreams go away. Good dreams, good dreams here to stay. Bad dreams, bad dreams go away. Good dreams, Good dreams here to stay. You have to do it three times for it-"

"For it to work, I know" Paul told her, tears in his eyes as he fought back the need to cry while his wife was sobbing, "She is the reason... we will still be giving Seattle Grace Mercy West $25 million, not because of you or your ass kissing, it's because of- it's because of her" At that moment, Paul let himself cry. Sob because of the beautiful child he just lost.

Mark picked her up from the hospital when she was done, he knew that she shouldn't be driving in this state and she knew it as well. He had already picked up Malakai and taken him to Max's moms house so that Mark could spend this time alone with Max.

She didn't say anything during the whole car ride, she didn't bother to look up from her hands or ask to get food after a long day of work. It wasn't until the car stopped and Mark opened the car door that she finally snapped out of the little space she was in but again, all she wanted to do was curl up to the man she loved and sleep the day off, maybe that's why she didn't notice where she was.

"Max" Mark called out for her as she silently kept walking toward the house, the sudden sound of her voice made her look up and inspect her surroundings.

"Where are we?" Max asked as she stared up at the big white house in front of her.

"What do you think?" Mark asked her, a huge smile was plastered on his face and he loved the look of shock on hers.

"Of what? Why are we standing in front of some person house, did we have plans that I forgot?" Max began to panic, "Mark, I am so sorry"

"Max" Mark placed his hands on each of her shoulder, letting his touch bring her comfort, "Why don't we go inside"

He guided Max up into the house, when he opened the door the first thing they saw was an open room with stairs to the side.

"Are we breaking in?" Max whispered. Mark let out a chuckle, not saying a word as he guided her into the empty living room.

"6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a basement for Maeve's contraptions, a play room for Malakai and an amazing backyard for Aslan" Mark looked down at his girl, her eyes filling up with tears and he let his own tears fall.

"You bought a house?" Max stammered, looking into his eyes and feeling the love consume her.

"I bought us a house, we needed more space and when the time was right we would have enough bedrooms for more kids and more space for all the dogs Maeve is trying to rescue" Mark let out a shaky chuckle.

"You bought us a house" Max repeated.

"I have spent years knowing that you were the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, I knew the moment I laid eyes on you because I immediately loved you before I even knew who you were and I was yours from then on, I was yours. I spent years kicking myself for letting you go, I knew I should have followed and told you that I was sorry and that I loved you. Throughout the years, I realized that we were meant to be together, like our souls are intertwined and our hearts are made of one and the simple thought of you consumes me. You awaken the strength I have and you make me feel loved, you make me feel needed, worthy to you and our kids and there isn't a moment in life where you aren't curved in me. I am a better person, a better father, a better lover because of you. I love you so much that I wake up excited to see your face, to talk to you, to hold you and I know I could do it for the rest of my life" His eyes never left hers no matter how blurry his vision got due to the tears. He watched as she sobbed, how the happiness in her eyes shined with love and he watched as her eyes traveled down as he got on one knee.

"I find knew ways to be awed by you everyday and I wish nothing more to keep those days forever, Maxine Mallard will you marry me?" He opened the black velvet box and showed her the beautiful ring placed inside, he couldn't wait to slide the ring on her finger so as soon as she said yes, he didn't waste anytime.

"I am lucky to be loved by you" Mark whispered into her ear as he pulled her into a hug, her body was shaking with her uncontrollable sobs.

"I am lucky to be loved by you"
