~BOLU~
The sound of girly chatter and giggle filled my ears as I stepped into one of the rooms in Ashley’s mansion. I covered my ears with my hands as I looked around searching for any of my friends, Nina, to be exact.
Scanning quickly round the room and not catching a glimpse of her dark hair or glasses, I figured she was not in this room. Yes, this was the third room on the first floor of this mansion that I’d stepped into, looking for her.
It was already twelve thirty am, the party was over. Some people were still in the large sitting room, chilling or whatever but it was late.
After talking with Ore for a while, thanking him for the hoodie which I promised to return ASAP and exchanging numbers, I decided I wanted to find my friends so that we can know where to sleep.
I sighed for the umpteenth time.
Where was Nina?
I turned around and closed the door.
Somehow, the girls did not even notice I stood there. They were too focused on whatever they were giggling about.
Why did I even think I could find her here sef? Oh, right. I thought I’d find her here because she socializes a lot. Maybe she forgot and followed some new made friends to their room.
But that was weird because Nina Ogbeide never forgot herself. And most of the time, when she socializes, she does not leave me out. She always tried to make me know those she knew too.
Anyway, when I turned, I bumped into someone, forehead to forehead and boy was it freaking painful. That person must be tall to have had a head bump with me.
“Ow…” I mumbled as I caressed the painful spot on my forehead with my fingers.
“Ouch…” I heard a voice say. It was a girl’s voice and what she said came out as a whisper.
“I’m sorry,” we both said at the same time. Looked up at the same time and I saw who the voice belonged to Anita Makinde.
The girl who was crowned the weirdest in our set. Quiet. Very quiet. Ashley and Ayo were quiet but this girl was their boss when it came to quietness. Okay how many times have I used ‘quiet’ now?
Anyway, she was the girl who also talked to herself a whole lot. Talking to one’s self sometimes was normal, I mean, I do it too but hers was just…bizarre. I caught her once, staring into thin air in the corridor, mumbling incoherent words. I got closer to her, had wanted to ask if she was well but it was like she sensed a presence and she stopped talking, smiled and walked away quickly.
Anita was a tall girl, probably around 5’7 or 5’8— not as tall as I was though. That was the reason she bumped directly into my forehead. She had a fair skin and a rough face. She hardly smiled but when she did, it lit up her whole face. I don’t think we’ve ever had a reasonable conversation since I’ve been in this school apart from that time in the corridor, if it’s actually considered reasonable.
Back to the present.
Her eyes widened when she realized it was me, she stood before. “Um…sorry. Bolu,” she said again.
Now it was my turn for my eyes to pop from their sockets. I swear my eyes almost removed. How on earth did she know my name? I thought she did not…
“Yes, I know your name, middle name and your surname too,” she voiced out as if she read my mind. “Boluwaji Arabella Jayeola, isn’t it?’
Still shocked, I opened my mouth, closed it and then opened it again, like a fish. “Uh…hmmm.”
“People who know you are more than those you know,” She said quietly and looked up at me.
I drew my head back. “Okay…um sorry again for hitting you. Didn’t look where I was going.”
She shook her head. “No. It was actually my mistake. I had my head down when I was walking. I’m sorry.”
“It’s cool?”
She nodded slowly as her eyes scanned my outfit, before she said; “Ore’s hoodie looks good on you.”
How did she know that?
Wait, most people probably stalk Ore but how on earth__
“I know it belongs to him,” She cut my thoughts off.
I stared at her, clearly astonished. “Uh…yeah,” I said and moved away from the door of the room then made to walk away.
I had only walked two steps away from her when I heard her voice say;
“And if you’re looking for Nina, she’s no longer here, in this mansion. She left.”
I stopped and turned around. “How’d you know that? Did she…”
She only shrugged and said; “She told me nothing. I just know.”
With that, she turned the handle of the door to the room I just left, leaving me standing in the corridor, dazed and confused as hell out of my mind.
It took me about three minutes to process what just happened before I shook it off my head, shrugged and continued my journey to the other rooms in search of my friends.
My phone beeped in my pocket and I took it out. Clicked it on a saw a message from Ninu on whatsapp. She finally replied.
Savage queen😳👊🔥🙌:
Hey babes! Sorry for just replying now. Our room is on the second floor, has a white door with a gold handle. Simply room 005. First on your right once you mount the second floor. I’m waiting for you oh.
I kept my phone back in my pocket and went up to the second floor. I finally found the room, knocked on it a little and walked in. Ninu was the first person I saw, had her face in her phone. Joy was admiring something on the wall.
Simultaneously, they both turned to look at the door.
“Finally! Took you hundred years,” Ninuola said and walked up to me.
“Bolu!” Joy called and engulfed me in a hug. But it wasn’t a tight one.
So I did not almost die again.
I saw Ninu roll her eyes though and when I gave her a quizzical look, she just shrugged.
“Hey guys,” I said after Joy released me from her hug. Apart from Nina, Joy-Anne also loved hugging people.
“Where’s Nina?” Ninu asked, looking behind me with furrowed brows.
“Yeah, where’s she?” Joy inquired.
“Ehn? I thought she was here,” I said in confusion.
“I thought she was with you. You guys are always together,” Ninu said.
Was Anita right?
Did Nina really leave the party?
And this late at night?
“Maybe she left?” I said. My statement sounded more like a question though.
“Left ke? Nina doesn’t just leave, you know. She would have told us.” Ninu countered.
“Well, it seems strange to me too. Last I know, she was with Ayo and then I left to go inside for the main party. I texted her first before I did you. She did not reply.”
“Well, have you tried calling her?”
I shook my head. “Yup. Her number was switched off.”
“Hmmm.” Ninu thought for a while before she spoke again. Joy just looked between both of us. “Weird. Maybe Ayo would know? Do you have his contact?”
“I can get it from the set’s whatsapp group.”
“I think Nina would be fine, you guys should not worry. In fact, I’ll call Ayo myself, if you want,” Joy offered.
“Uh…no! Bolu is the one for that job. She’s her best friend and not you!” Ninu snapped.
“Okay, I… just wanted to help,” Joy-Anne said, with a hint of irritation but mostly gloom, in her voice.
I wanted to scold Ninu on the fact that she snapped at Joy but…
“Hey, Bolu!” Chidera’s voice squealed my name like she tasted candy, cutting our conversation short.
I turned my attention to her voice, walked away from the door and further into the room. It was then I realized that we had other company.
Ashley, Chidera, The twins— Tessy and Terry and three other girls that were unfamiliar to me, clad in their sleeping outfits and really warm sweaters and all seated on the floor, busy with their phones, looked up at me.
As usual, Ashley’s arm was linked with Chidera’s.
“Hi everyone.” I nodded at the other girls who just mumbled HEYs and HI’s.
Chidera got up from where she sat dragging Ashley with her. She stood before me, smiling real sweet.
“Welcome to Ashley’s beautiful room!” She spread her arms out wide, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
It was then I actually took my time to admire it.
Calling the room ‘magnificent’ was an understatement. It was a very large room, the largest I’d seen so far. The walls were painted a bright shade of orange, almost peach and a king sized bed was in its middle. There was a closet at one corner of the room and it had a door. As in, it was a room on its own. Imagine a small room inside a room? Yup, that’s what it was.
I sighted another door which I presumed was the bathroom and a TV was hung on the wall, opposite the bed. At another corner of the room, a dress up table and mirror occupied it. There was also a reading table, shelves above it and a desktop on top of it. Oh boy, the room was mad!
My room was nothing compared to this.
The room was sophisticated and Ashley looked like a simple girl. She owned all these stuff and didn’t even show it?
“It’s real nice,” I said, directing my statement to Ashley. “Your room, house and all. It is really cool. I love it.”
“Thanks Bolu,” She smiled at me. One that showed she appreciated the fact I noticed and acknowledged her presence.
“Of course, it had to come out nice! I was the one who told her to change the décor of her room from that boring and dull yellow theme. Imagine wasting a whole spec like this room with that color! Hian! Don’t mind her oh, she can’t even do anything for herself! Imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t called Ninu and Goke to plan her party. It would have been a disaster!” Chidera yapped, giggling at her words expecting praises or what?
None of what she said was funny in any way. She just casted her best friend openly in front of everyone and she didn’t even take a hint from the looks she received from all of us.
I saw Ashley’s face become stoic; she mumbled incoherent words.
“I like your hoodie.” Chidera quickly switched topics. “Looks real good on you. Funny though, It’s like I’ve seen it somewhere before.” She walked closer to me and touched it.
That’s when I remembered I was still wearing his hoodie and he was her boyfriend.
Oh God, if you’re listening, please don’t let her recognize this hoodie.
I’m not ready for any drama tonight.
“Chi, did you drink this night? Like, take any alcohol?” Ninu asked, getting Chidera’s attention immediately and she forgot about the hoodie.
Thanks for the diversion, Ninuola.
“Only two or three cups. Why?”
That explains a lot…
“Oh, no wonder you sound really high right now,” Ninu replied and that earned laughs from all of us in the room.
She looked at everyone and shrugged, probably wondering what was funny. “Oh! I’ve not called Ore, My Boo!” She cooed and dragged Ashley to a part of the large room, saying; “Ash, where’s my phone?”
I shook my head at how unstable her character was.
Ore is really trying oh.
Joy, Ninu and I walked to a spot in the room and spread our sleeping bags on the floor.
The bed could take almost all of us in the room if we planned on being squeezed like sardines but I wanted to remain normal in shape and size so I dismissed the idea.
I changed into my night wear and still put the hoodie on. The air was freezing even though all the windows were locked. I searched my backpack for my blanket, was about to tuck myself into my sleeping bag when the door opened and two people walked in — Tami and Keesha. Remember them? I bet you do.
I finally remembered who they were. My former classmates at THI. Tamilore Albert and Keesha Destiny-Afam. They were wannabe queen bees. Believed they ruled our set at that time because they thought they were rich and attractive. To be fair though, they were RICH and VERY ATTRACTIVE.
Tami was slender but had mad curves and a clear as crystal skin. Keesha also had curves but she was not slender, she was more on the chubby side. They were besties and their fathers owned large businesses in Ibadan and other states in Nigeria. But when it came to facial beauty, let’s just say make-up did it for them. Case closed.
Back at THI, I only spoke to them because we had been grouped together for a project. Fact? Other members of the group and I, ended up doing the project ourselves but they got their marks anyway. Funny enough, they were not among those people who bullied me because of my height.
They made so much noise as they entered and I cringed at how loud they were being right now. Joy-Anne looked at them, hissed and tucked herself in the sleeping bag, falling asleep immediately.
“That boy was hot, did you see the way I flirted with him?” Tami chirped happily.
“That was nothing compared to the way I made out with that guy from UI, it was…” Keesha bragged.
Oh…so it wasn’t only Ore they planned on hooking up with tonight?
I blocked out their conversation. Didn’t want to hear any more of the crap they were saying. Did these girls have filter at all? Did they know other people were in the room? Did they even understand the meaning of all the things they just said? I shivered in disgust before I heard;
“Won de.” From Ninu’s mouth which made me chuckle.
I wanted to go to sleep when I heard a beep on my phone. I picked it up, half expecting a message from Nina. I was slightly disappointed when I saw it was from Ore, my new friend but I saved his name as something he wouldn’t wanna know.
COCKY GOAT🙄: Waji mama!😉
ME: Ha-ha. Very funny🙄🙄🙄 Told you not to call me that.
COCKY GOAT🙄: Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. 😁😎
ME: 🙄🙄
COCKY GOAT🙄: You’re not asleep?
ME: Duh! And you, aren’t you meant to be chatting with your girlfriend?
COCKY GOAT🙄: I am.
Just then, I looked at Chidera on Ashley’s bed, she was beaming and blushing. I smiled and shook my head.
ME: And you’re still chatting with me?
COCKY GOAT🙄: Yup. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.
ME: Awww
COCKY GOAT🙄: Pele. Correction: I just wanted to make sure you didn’t freeze to death so that my hoodie won’t suffer.
ME: 🙄🙄 Should have known your sense can never return. Boys are stupid.
COCKY GOAT🙄: Yup. A well-known fact and we are proud of it. Makes you girls fall for us all the more.
ME: Mtcheeww. Yen, yen.
COCKY GOAT🙄: 😎😎 I posted your pic.
ME: Be lying there o!
COCKY GOAT🙄: I’m serious. I can send you a screenshot now, sef. Hold on.
“Omo! Babe!” Ninu yelled. “Ore posted your picture, abi is it not you on his status?” She whispered the last part and showed me the picture on his status.
It wasn’t a lie. The picture he took of me was there with the caption ‘mama’. I frowned at the stupid caption.
“So you were with Ore this night, huh?” Ninu wiggled her brows.
I frowned at her and hissed. “It’s not what you think. Gossip oshi.”
She giggled, faced her phone and said; “Wait till we go back to school again on Monday, you’d have blown, I swear.”
I rolled my eyes. “Blown ko, Blom-blom ni.”
Ninu shook her head whilst smiling as her concentration returned to her phone.
My phone dinged and I looked at it.
He sent two pictures and they downloaded immediately. The original and the screenshot.
ME: ‘Mama’? Really?
COCKY GOAT🙄: 😁😁It’s the best I could come up with on short notice.
ME: You’re pathetic! Can everybody see your status?
COCKY GOAT🙄: Nah. Only a selected amount of people can which include all our classmates at RBA and maybe some people from schools like OBMS, ASHS, ISI, Oak Ville High, THI, Castron High, Crescent High, some UNIBADAN babes, UNIPORT hotties…
ME: What? You must be freaking high! So only a selected amount of people are all these people?
COCKY GOAT🙄: 😂😂😂😂 Yes. But why the fuss? My photography skills are dope and you look so good in the picture. I’m expecting some people to ask for your number sef.
ME: You know what, zeem official or whatever. Goan sleep! Now! GOODNIGHT! OR MORNING! WHATEVER!
I didn’t wait for him to reply before I turned off my data and closed whatsapp.
Ore Jumai is a goat.
I prayed to God again that Chidera and the girls in our room did not see it. Before they will goan mark me like werewolf.
I yawned feeling sleepy and almost closed my eyes when I heard the girls’ voice in a conversation that sparked my interest. My eyes flew open and my ears perked up.
“Which is more important, beauty or brains?” Tessy spoke up.
It actually got me thinking. Which is more important?
“Hmmm,” I heard Ninu mutter and I knew she was listening even as she kept typing away on her phone.
I looked beside me and heard Joy’s soft snores, reminding me she was sound asleep.
Chidera had sprawled herself on the bed, sleeping like she was drugged and Ashley sat quietly on her bed, her legs drawn to herself as she listened in on the conversation.
“Beauty is more important,” Keesha answered and I wondered if she was really correct. Maybe she had a rational explanation?
“Why’d you say so?” A girl, who, among the three other girls, wasn’t sleeping, asked.
“Because Jola, who cares if you have brains when you have the best kind of body, natural or artificial? When you have the perfect curves, hot lips, soft and moist all the time, fair or dark skin that is well taken care of and hair that one could kill for, I could say you have it all. Irresistible. Fashionable. Accepted. Wanted by all— men and women. Chic. Freaking accomplished. I rest my case.”
“Seconded,” Tami nodded in agreement and I looked, really looked at the two girls.
Are they for freaking real? Rational explanation indeed.
“And besides, when you have cash combined with that beauty, you have the world wrapped around your fingers.” She rubbed her thumb and index fingers together. “Who the fudge gives a hoot about brains when all you have to do is flaunt your beauty to get what you want?”
“Really?” Jola asked again with a skeptical tone in her voice. “So you’re saying school ain’t important?”
“Look boo,” Keesha said to Jola, while picking at her nails. “School na scam! Especially here in Nigeria. I’m only going to school to learn how to speak English and because my parents coerced me to.”
“Like yeah,” Tami agreed. “I agree with Kiki. If I had my way, I’d skip school every darn time. Life is short, you know. No time for stupid stuffs like calculus or trig and what not.”
They high-fived themselves.
‘Idiots’ I wanted to scream at them but held my mouth.
No drama tonight.
“And you both just showed how much of goat DNA runs in your blood,” Ninu spat without filter as she tucked her phone into her sweater’s pocket. Crossed her arms, scoffed and stood up, walking to the middle of the room. “Let me ask you a question, b!”
Normally, ‘b’ meant ‘babe’ but judging from the way Ninu said it with so much scorn and venom, it could have meant the ‘b-word’. If you know, you know.
“Keesha right?” She inquired.
Keesha and Tami looked the least pleased after Ninu insulted their bloodline. But Keesha nodded in affirmation anyway.
“Okay Keesha. From your previous yammer, I presume you wanna be a model or a public figure someday ain’t it?”
Keesha was clearly offended but nodded nonetheless.
“Good, I also presume you have role models? Who are they?”
“Keve Davidson, Sophia Williams, Shade Onam…who are you and what right do you have to speak to me or ask me all these questions?”
“Right,” Ninu said, ignoring her questions. “Those are top famous Nigerian teen models and you think they got to where they are because of the shit that just came out of your mouth? No, my dear. Let me tell a little about Shade Onam a.k.a Shades of Green. Super model. Golden girl at world famous secondary school in Lagos, Castron High. Chocolate dark clear skin. Gifted with perfect curves and a very rare green eye color. Very successful in her career, I tell you…”
“I know that__”
“And you may be shocked if I told you that babe knows physics like mad. A whole freaking teen model knows physics. Has time to actually sit down and read her books while managing her career. I’ve watched a lot of her interviews and she speaks with intelligence. She has insight, has a mind of her own, do you know where you’ll be in the next ten years? Do you?”
The physics part shook me.
Shade Onam knew physics?
If you didn’t know who Shade Onam was, you probably were not in Nigeria or lived under a rock. She was the most adored teenager in the whole of Africa. Had millions of followers on instagram and twitter. Most girls and boys in my school gush over her, stalk on her IG like crazy. Following her every trend and stuffs…
The fact that she knew physics still shook me.
“I__”
Ninu cut her off again. “Sophia Williams. A tall slim— very slim— and dark-skinned chica, chocolate-deep brown eyes, lips so pink you’d think it was not real, long, flawless legs that I’d never ever seen until her. Her wild beauty could not be mistaken for any other person. Her whole being screamed ‘elegance, grace, style, class and more…’ yet as a student of Crescent high in Lagos, she doesn’t slack in her studies. Always one to top her classmates, represent her school in competitions and has the ability to organize things real quick, that’s what a fast thinker does and she is one. Another fact is, she is really good at sports.”
Okay, I did not know so much about Sophia but I knew she was a popular model. Joba was always shouting her name anyhow each time his friends came over. They would argue and argue about who was finer between she and one American model like this…don’t know and don’t give a hoot about the American’s name.
“I__”
Ninu cut her off the third time.
Aunty Kiki better shut up and close your mouth. You resemble gbounger fish when it’s open down like that.
She chuckled. “Or is it Keve Davidson you want me to get started with? That girl had represented her school, Oak Ville High in Lagos, long before she became a model. You would agree with me that her brown skin is flawless and her long, fluffy hair is one amazing thing about her. She doesn’t slack! She ain’t narrow minded and that’s why she is a successful teen in Nigeria today.”
Keve Davidson was one of the fastest rising teen stars in Nigeria, she might not have reached the level of Shade or Sophia but man, she has really blown.
With currently one point three million followers, it hadn’t been long since she came to limelight as it was roughly one year and six months ago that I first saw her face on GLOW magazine and since then…her popularity became something else.
One more thing about her was she was good friends with Nigeria’s teen biracial musician, model and sweetheart, Jason Babafemi, popularly known as ‘Jay’. Maybe her friendship with another star made her popularity grow so fast too?
Ninuola exhaled.
“I just modeled for the NAI brand.” Keesha, Tami and the other girls looked at her, astounded, their mouths hung agape. I held back my laughter. “Yes, I did. E choke? E shock you? You can check out IG for more details. Yes, you’re in the same room with a rising teen star,” she bragged.
“It’s true!” Terry, one of the twins said, raising her phone in the air and showing it to the faces of everyone. “Her followers have currently increased to 20k!”
20k? Just in one night? Was it not 10k just now?
Father, when?
If my 650 followers increase to 1000, I will throw a thanksgiving party in church.
Ninu smiled proudly. “Thank you Terry.”
“Anytime,” Terry replied.
“That means I can use myself as an example, a very good one at that. I’m a science student at RBA and the current social prefect of that school who with the help of her fellow partner, made this party work out so well and come out so amazing.” She bragged on.
Ninu was never one to brag but I think she was doing this for a reason and she had the right to brag anyway, she had solid evidence of everything she said and would say.
“Safe to say I’m one of the most outstanding students in my school. Had all distinctions in my GCE results.”
I literally choked on air when she mentioned GCE result and all heads turned towards me. I looked at them, smiled awkwardly and mouthed; “I’m fine.” Their heads turned back and I calmed myself down.
“So, Kiki and… whoever the fudge you are,” She pointed her fingers to Tami who had the glare that could murder on her face but Ninu did not care as she continued her speech. “I’d like to let you both know that beauty and brains work hand in hand. You can’t talk about one without talking about the other. Once you have brains, your beauty shows by itself, you don’t even have to flaunt it. And all the beautiful people I know have brains, academically and otherwise. I also hate the stupid stereotype about beauty. Beauty is not just all about face and body or whatever. That is just being plain attractive. True beauty comes from within, your attitude, character, confidence and of course…brains is what makes beauty complete so before you utter more words of foolishness from that crap on your unattractive caked and baked face you call a mouth, think ahead, think about the effect it will have, organize your facts very well…” She sighed. “I rest my case.”
Nobody said anything as we all just stared wide eyed at Ninuola Adams who in turn, wiped her mouth and sashayed to her sleeping bag just by my other side.
God, Ninu had confidence, mad confidence that I hoped would fall on me someday.
The whole room was quiet until I heard shuffling. Keesha and Tami packed their stuffs and left the room.
But before they did, they glared at Ninu, called her the b-word (she ignored them) and they slammed the door behind them.
So much anger vented on the poor, innocent door.
I released the laugh I’d been holding in me for long, quietly though. Didn’t want anyone to think I was some unserious person.
The girls became mute as they all turned to their sleeping bags.
Mad oh! Ninu’s words really shook them. It shook me too, though. I didn’t stop thinking about that part where she said Shade Onam was a boss in Physics! How did Ninu even know that?!
I started examining myself. Granted, I had the height that most people wanted and I loved it; a lot of people have said I’m beautiful— which I’m not quite sure of — but when it came to having the brain part… hmmm.
“Omo, see as you savage people’s nine months. That was razz gan!” I said as I hyped Ninu.
She smiled at me before turning off her phone and slipping into her sleeping bag, making it look like a cocoon. “No hyping Bolu,” She yawned. “Go to sleep. It’s three in the morning.”
My eyes bulged.
They have been bulging a lot these days.
“Three in the morning?” I looked at my phone for confirmation. She was right. It was three in the morning. I caught a glimpse of Ashley still in the same position as I slipped into my cocoon still holding my phone.
I remembered I was supposed to do something with it but couldn’t remember what I actually had to do with it. I was supposed to call…
That was when I slept off.
Yooooooo!!!!!!!
