𝐗. "𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥ä𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫!"
THE YOUNG WOMAN LOOK terrified. Juliana's heart went out to her as she watched her closely. There was no way that she was older then herself or Will. As they approach her, she stays still, as there's nowhere to run.
-"Il ny rien ici. Nous n'avons rien pour vous. S'il vous plaît." She begs, hoping whoever these two were would understand her.
And they did understand, Will places his rifle down, and holds his hands up. His face is calm during the whole process.
-"Anglais. Not German. Friend... We're friends."
He speaks for the both of them. The woman calms a little, her eyes darting back and forth between the two.
"This place, this town. Ecoust?" Will asks, using various hand movements to help her understand visually.
-"C'est Ecoust?" Juliana inquires, thankful that she took French in school and remembered some of it.
-"Oui."
Suddenly, Juliana feels a sharp pain in her lower abdomen. She gasps at the unexpected cramp, and places her hands over the painful area. The young French women notices this, and immediately walks over to her.
-"Vous avez besoin d'aide?" Pointing to Juliana's lower stomach. Will sends them confused looks, and grows concerned. The nurse nods, and the French women gently grabs her arm and leads her behind a wooden folding screen.
She the turns and rummages through the top draw of a dresser. After closing it, she hands the nurse some white cloth while saying, "Pour le sang. Blood." She pronounces the English word slowly. Touched, Juliana then places her own hand on her heart, to indicate to herself.
-"I'm Juliana, vous?"
The young woman watches her, confused etched on her face. Juliana doesn't give up, but does it again until she understands.
-"Lauri," she replies, with a small smile on her face. They nod, and Lauri leaves to let Juliana take care of herself. She could hear the conversation between them, and tried to hurry along the process she was going through. When finished, as a token of her appreciation, she reaches into her bag and pulls out the small cherry blossom branch that Will gave her. She looks at it one last time before placing it down on a small table beside her. It didn't look perfect, and had lost most of its petals, but it was still beautiful nevertheless.
She walks out from behind the folding screen and sees Lauri examining Will's head. He sat in a chair as she did this, and she watches her leans forward towards him. Will looks relaxed for a change, and that was a good thing.
Because she often acted without thinking, and she felt a quick ting of jealousy course through her. She immediately snapped out of it, and scolded herself for acting in such a manner. Lauri was helping them, and Juliana felt horrible. Besides, Will wasn't even her's, he was a free man, and could do whatever the heck he wanted.
Everyone's attention is then drawn to the sound of a cry. Lauri immediately leaves Will's side and walks over to a dresser. In the bottom drawer is a makeshift crib, and she pulls a small baby out of it.
-"Ma petite." Lauri looks lovingly at the child. The baby is small, and easily very, very young.
-"A girl?" Juliana asks while stepping forward. Lauri nods, and Juliana smiles fondly at the baby, who is starting to wake, and begins to cry. Lauri soothes her, while sitting down on an old mattress that sat next to the dresser. Juliana sits across from her and goes into her bag. Will joins them, and kneels down bedside the group.
They make small talk in broken English and French about the child. The baby was most likely found in the streets, and she didn't have a name. The small one begins to cry louder, and Lauri holds her closely to her chest.
-"I have food. Here. I have these. You can have them - here, take them all, for you and the child. Here." Will says as he takes his pack off, he pulls out all of his food and places it in front of Lauri on the mattresses. Juliana does the same, and Lauri looks at them with hopelessness.
-"Of course," Juliana whispers after some thought. "Milk."
She goes to grab her canteen, but Will bets her to it. He opens his container and hands it to Lauri. She smells it, a smile forms on her tired face.
-"Merci." She beans in gratitude, appreciation etched in her face. Juliana smiles back and places her hand on the girls shoulder, and gives it a squeeze.
The baby is still fussing, and Will moves closer, gently talking to the child from Lauri's arms.
The new face makes the baby curious, and she latches her eyes onto him.
-"Bonjour." He says softly, making Juliana and Lauri smile. He repeats himself again, calming the baby down.
-"Avez-vous des enfants? Children - you?" Lauri inquires. He doesn't answer, but continues to watch the baby, speaking softly to it.
Lauri then turns to Juliana, and points to her own abdomen. "Tu ferais mieux?" She asks her. The nurse nods and responds. She dd feel much better.
-"Oui merci."
Lauri smiles softly. Both then turn back to Will, whose rocking the baby gently. He then begins to recite a familiar poem.
"They went to sea in a Sieve, they did, In a Sieve they went to sea: In spite of all their friends could say, On a winter's morn, on a stormy day, In a Sieve they went to sea.
Far and few, far and few, Are the lands where the Jumblies live; Their heads are green, and their hands are blue, And they went to sea in a Sieve."
They sit still for moment in the firelight.
Suddenly, the distant church bell tolls, the noise filling the quiet cellar. Juliana and Will lock eyes as they count they count. They exchange worried glances after they count six.
The wary travelers immediately stand, and he hands the baby to Lauri, who watches them in confusion. She begs them to stay, finally feeling safe at last. In haste, the two Brits collect their things, and hurry up a flight of steps to the front door.
Juliana looks back just before they leave, and sees Lauri staring hopelessly at them.
-"Je suis désolé." She apologizes before closing the door behind her, and follows Will closely. They run through the deserted streets, trying to make up for lost time.
As they hurry about in the shadows, a door flies open ahead of him then, and the street begins to flood with warm light, followed by a German soldier. He's drunk, and begins to vomit in the streets. He moans loudly, drawing attention to himself.
Protectively, Will shields Juliana as they step back into hiding. They hold their breath as they think of a way to get out of here. Both turn and walk quietly in a different direction, until they're met by a younger German. He's easily in his late teens, his blond hair a wild mess, and blue eyes bloodshot. His face is grimy and he locks eyes with Juliana. They stay still, neither of wanting to hurt the other. Will puts himself between them, and the German locks eyes with him, the same thought goes through the two men's head as they stare.
The boy opens his mouth to scream, but
Will closes the distance between them, and pushes the boy hard against a pillar.
Will holds him there, his hand clamped over the young soldiers mouth. They lock eyes, the German's filled with fear. Will then holds his finger to his lips, and the boy nods.
Will removes his hand from the boys mouth. He sucks in air, and shouts
-"Engländer!"
Juliana's lets out a sad and wary sigh. She was foolish to think for one second, that someone so innocent looking, could actually bring death to them all.
Will reacts quickly, shoving his palm into the boy's mouth, gagging him as they both fall onto the hard ground. The boys bites down on Will's hand, the same one that's still wrapped in the bandage.
Will gasps our in pain, still keeping his hand in the boys mouth. The German pulls out a knife, and the two wrestle as Will tries to knock it out of his hand. After succeeding, he wraps his hands around the boys neck.
The younger of the two starts to kick and push. And although he was the enemy, Juliana couldn't help but slightly feel sorry for him. He was so young.
Will then grabs the boys neck. They struggle for a bit, drawing slight attention to themselves.
-"Turn away Jules." Will instructs as he begins to choke the German. Juliana does as told, and a single tear escapes her eye as she tries to block out the cries of the struggling teen.
When what had to be done, was done, Will grabs Juliana's hand and pulls her away. She lets go and they run fast through the streets. Their steps pounding on the pavement as they went. The Germans then begin to open fire on them, and they chase the two.
Dawn was happening as they ran, meaning that they were running out of time. Will ran, with Juliana right behind him. He didn't stop once, or speak to explain. He just keep going, until he came to a bridge.
"Jump!" He yells over his shoulder before disappearing into the water, and that is exactly what Juliana did.
The water felt icy and cold on her skin as she tried to swim with the current. She wanted to call out for Will, but knew that it was best not to. She feared for their lives as they did their best to swim around the jagged rocks that stood up in the water. While holding her breath, down they went with a waterfall and into calmer waters.
They laid there, floating along the river on their backs. Will held onto a log, his eyes growing heavy as they drifted along. Juliana turns and floats on her back trying her best to keep herself awake.
-"Will? Will? Will wake up!" She yells to him, trying to keep them both alive. He remains unstirred, but eventually opens his eyes after hearing Juliana's voice, and apologizes for scaring her.
They float in silence, watching the white cherry blossom petals fall from the trees around them.
Memories of Tom enter their minds, making them sad. Juliana then reflects on her own journey. God had been good to her and Will, for there were many near death experiences.
As they came to the end of the river, they were blocked by a fallen tree and several dead bodies. The smell was fowl, it made them want to throw up.
-"I'll go first," Will says bravely before climbing over the bodies. The nurse nods in response and she holds her breath, as to not breathe in the awful stench.
The water was cold, but the air felt even colder. They shivered as they made their way out, feeling sick and depressed. Once on dry land, Will races further inland and throws himself on the ground, and begins to cry. His sobs racking through his lean body.
Juliana's eyes begin to fill with tears as she tries to stay strong. She knew what he wept for, and she placed a cold hand on his shoulder.
While doing so, she felt strange. Her hands felt numb, and when she looked down at them, they were blue.
She utters out a cry of surprise, filled with anxiety, causing Will to turn to her. She steps back and grabs her hands, scarred when she can't feel them.
-"M-my hands! I-I can't feel them!" She whispers while trembling. With growing concern, Will comes towards her, his eyebrows shooting up at the sight of her blue hands.
-"It must have been the water," he suggests while stepping towards the frightened girl. She begins to cry and tries desperately to move them. She shakes too much to focus.
-"I can't feel them!" She sobs, her whole body shaking like a leaf. Will grabs her face gently, and tells her to hold on. He's blurred due to her tears, but she trusts him. He then grabs her hands, and starts to rub them. This way, he could get the blood circulation going.
After a few attempts, the numbness went away, and she was able to feel Will's cold hands. She clutches into them, and they both sink to the ground, tried and worn out.
Now was the time for tears and to not be strong. So the young lady breaks into tears. Tears that had been bottled up from her previous troubles.
Will remains silent and still. He watches her, his heart aching with hers. She leans against a tree, the feeling somewhat comforting.
