"Zoya, you're gonna have to take it easy." Roz tried to keep her in her bed.
"Get off, get off." Zoya tried to fight her off, yanking IV's out of her arms and pulling at the tube under her nose. "Get off of me! I can't breath!"
"They're gonna try to sedate you again, please, please calm down." Roz begged her, keeping her held as Zoya cried out, her back against the bed as she couldn't fight. She was always so much stronger then Roz ever was, her muscles tougher. But now she was weak and could barely move in the slightest.
"Let me go." Zoya cried, holding Roz's arms. "I need to see him."
"You don't want to see him right now, sweetie." Roz tried to comfort her.
"I need to!" Zoya cried out, going to try and fight again. "Katniss! Katniss, where are you! Katn-"
The girl walked in, her neck brace on with swollen eyes. Zoya froze, staring at her with terrified eyes. Roz let her go, brushing some of her thinning hair off her head. "It's not safe to see Peeta yet, Z."
Zoya sat up slowly, hadn't taken her eyes off Katniss. There was no way, it was impossible. Peeta wasn't a violent person, let alone to Katniss. He loved her, he protect her. Now she could barley speak and looked worse then she did. "Peeta did that?"
"H-" Katniss tried to speak, but her voice was ragged and loosening.
"No, no." Roz rubbed her arms as she sat down. "Don't talk. It'll make it worse."
Zoya looked to Roz finally. "I need to see him. He needs to know I'm okay. I need to know he's okay."
"He's not himself right now. At the Capitol, they used tracker jacker venom on him to change his memories. The ones with Katniss are completely different, we don't know if they changed for you too." Roz broke the news to her gently, but it wasn't soft enough to not see the pain and break within Zoyas eyes. "You need to recover."
"I'm okay." Zoya promised. "I have to do this."
"Zoya, you're not okay." Roz spoke in distress, panic setting in. "We have spent the last eight weeks worried about you. I've been hold up thinking you were dead, that i'd never see you again. I'll be damned if you risk your life willingly and that's how I loose you!"
Zoya was silent, inhaling as she looked down. Katniss reached over, grabbing her hand. Zoya met her eye, seeing the nod she gave her. She couldn't talk, but it was enough. Zoya squeezed her hand tightly. She looked to Roz. "Is he at least recovering okay?"
"He's starting to gain weight back, he's eating and healing." Roz nodded at her. "I've been checking on him every day for you. It'll take some time, but he won't be stuck like this forever."
Zoya swallowed. "They kept us separate, you know? At the Capitol. Most days i'd wonder if he was alive, what they were doing to him. I never knew, but tracker jacker venom? This isn't fair. He doesn't deserve any of this!"
"Shhh, shh." Roz shhed her to avoid the doctors swarming in. "Zoya, honey, we know. You don't have to defend him to us. We know Peeta, that's not him right now. You have to trust me when I say you can't risk it right now. In your state."
"Roz." Zoya gave her a pleading look as she grabbed her hands. "Please. I haven't seen him in eight weeks, only heard all the pain he witnessed. You have to let me do this. I can't heal if I don't see that he's alive."
Roz inhaled, looking to Katniss.
"Keep it light, don't push him too much." Heavensbee spoke to Zoya as they stood outside of the glass. She got to see him, his thin frame and sunken in features. She wouldn't have recognized who he was if it hadn't been for them telling her. "We don't know his response to you yet. After what happened in the games, the Capitol could have easily wanted him to turn on you the same way."
It was a painful thought, but Zoya had to keep it together for the time being. "I'm ready."
Katniss met Zoyas eye with a nod, the girl from five walking toward the door, pulling her IV with her. The buzzing noise filled up her ears, indicating the door had unlocked. Zoya pushed it open quickly, using all her strength not to charge at him immediately. But, she made a promise to Roz. She wouldn't push her luck yet.
Peeta looked to the door, like she had, it took him a second to recognize her. He stared at her, her own eyes wide back at his. Just a short, painful moment. He smiled. "Zoya."
"Peeta." she sighed in relief, this time saying the hell with what Roz said. She pulled her IV out again, running to his bed. She was weak, stumbling onto it with a little yelp. Her arms went around him tightly, he couldn't hug her back from the restrains. Zoya squeezed her eyes shut, holding onto him like she'd loose him. But, after what happened, apart of her thought she would. "How are you feeling? I'm so sorry, they wouldn't let me come see you sooner."
"They said you were dead." Peeta yanked against the restrains to try and hug her back. "They all said you were dead."
"I'm not, i'm okay." she pulled back, cupping his face as she leaned her head into his. "We're out of the Capitol."
"Where are we?" he asked her, yanking his hands again as Zoya grabbed his hands to have some for of contact.
"District Thirteen." she shook her head. "It's real. I don't know how. They said soldiers came and rescued us. I didn't know if you were alive."
"I saw you die." Peeta shook his head quickly his eyes shut. "You're not real. I know you're not real. I saw you die in the Games."
"Peeta, no, no." she cupped his face so he'd look at her again. "I'm alive, i'm here. At the Capitol, they messed with your memories. I'm okay, I didn't die. I was there with you."
He leaned on her, trying to clearly find some reassurance. How was he supposed to know she was alive when he could remember her dying in the arena. "I can't-"
"You have to trust me." Zoya spoke again, moving her hand so his fingers laid on the pulse in her wrist. "Tracker jacket venom can change everything. I didn't die, I made it out with you."
Made it out? They didn't make it out, they just escaped the arena.
Peeta scanned her eyes, Zoya looked painfully hesitant. "Do you remember everything else? Is something else wrong with me me your head?"
Peeta was silent a second, his eyes scanning her face. A small smile. "I remember."
Zoya sighed in relief, leaning in to kiss him on the forehead. "Before long they'll get you out of these, okay? It'll just be a little bit for the doctors to make sure you're okay."
"My family hasn't come to see me?" Peeta looked up as her in questioning. Zoya didn't say anything, his eyes trialed off. "There was an attack on twelve. My family?"
Zoyas eyes watered as she held his face. "I'm sorry, love. They said the bakery didn't make it."
Peeta looked away as tears fell down his face, Zoya whipped them away with her thumb. He stared off, sadness going to anger. Zoyas heart picked up in worry, the sudden change of emotion not normal. "Peeta?"
"Because of Katniss." he stated.
"No, no, that's what I was saying when I said the Capitol-" Zoya tried to explain to him again.
"She send you in here?" Peeta asked forcefully.
"No, I wanted to see you." she promised, her eyes filling up again and holding his face.
"She's a liar, Zoya." he stared at her with venom in his eyes. "She knows you're here now. You can't trust you. You can't."
"I wanted to come, I promise." she tried, he thrashed against her hold. "I promise, Peeta. I'm not- I wanted to see you. I wanted to."
"You can't trust her!" Peeta yelled at her, the way he moved making her remove her hands off him quickly. Doctors rushed in, grabbing ahold of Zoya.
"No, no, it's okay." she tried to get out of their hold, but they were strong and there were too many. "Let me go! It's okay!"
"She's a monster, Zoya! She's a mutt the capitol created to destroy us!" Peeta shouted as Zoya was dragged away. "Zoya! Zoya, come back!"
"Peeta!" Zoya shouted.
