Chapter 20
The crackling fire cast long shadows on the snow around them, its orange glow a stark contrast to the cold, dark night. The flames danced and flickered, throwing sparks into the crisp air as the group of dragonets settled down on the frost-covered ground. They were an odd mix of personalities, each one striking in their own way, but in that moment, they shared something simple: warmth.
Tsunami was the first to break the silence, her voice bold and a little too loud. "We should head to the Kingdom of the Sea," she said, staring into the fire with a fierce glint in her eyes. "My parents are there, and I haven't seen them in forever. They're gonna be so surprisedβthough I'm pretty sure they've figured out by now that I'm not dead." Her expression flickered between determination and something softer, like she missed them more than she was letting on.
Frost watched her, the soft glow of the fire reflecting in her frosty scales. Tsunami's energy was infectious, the kind that made you want to keep up or risk being left behind. It reminded her of the roaring storms she used to watch from afar, storms that could sweep away everything in their path. But the SeaWing was still a bit of a puzzle to her. Lost princess, huh? The idea was strange, though not entirely unexpected.
Glory, always the more thoughtful one, raised her head from where she sat. She wasn't as fiery as Tsunami, but she had a sharpness to her that came from seeing things more clearly than most. "Lost princess or not, we're heading there because we need a plan," she said, her voice even and calm. "The world's not exactly safe right now, and we can't keep running forever."
Frost took a slow breath, her icy exhale mingling with the warmth of the fire. She hadn't planned on sticking with anyone for too long. She was used to being on her own, drifting from place to place like the cold wind in the mountains. But there was something about these dragonets. They were a bit reckless, sure, and far too trusting. But they didn't judge her for who she wasβor for what she'd been. In their own strange way, they seemed to accept her.
"I'm not sure how much help I'll be," Frost said slowly, breaking her silence. "But... I don't have anywhere else to go, so I might as well stick with you for now." She shrugged, the faintest hint of a smirk playing on her lips, though it was hard to tell in the flickering firelight. "If you'll have me."
Clay smiled warmly, his big, kind eyes studying her as he leaned forward. "Of course you're welcome," he said with a friendly grin. "We could use another wing, especially if we're going up against whoever Blaze is working with." He seemed to know how to put people at ease, and for a moment, Frost could almost forget the lingering tension in her chest.
Starflight, sitting a little apart from the rest, seemed lost in thought. His dark eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at Frost. "You sure you want to go back to the Kingdom of the Sea?" he asked, his voice quieter than the others. "That's quite the trip, and it sounds like it's a bit... complicated for Tsunami." He glanced at the SeaWing princess, who didn't seem to mind the implication.
Frost tilted her head, considering his words. She didn't know what had happened to Tsunami's family, but there was something in the air that suggested it was a bigger deal than anyone was saying. But what did she care? She wasn't in a rush to go anywhere in particular, and if she was honest, she was a little curious about this lost princess business.
"I'm fine with it," Frost replied coolly, though there was a glimmer of something new in her eyes. Maybe it was curiosity, maybe it was something elseβsomething she hadn't allowed herself to feel in a long time. "I'm here for the ride. Besides, I could use a good adventure."
Sunny, who had been quietly watching the interaction, finally spoke up, her voice gentle and hopeful. "I think it'll be good to stick together," she said, glancing at each of them. "We might be a little... unusual. But there's strength in numbers, right?" She gave Frost a shy smile. "It's nice to have someone who understands what it's like to be on the outside."
Frost glanced at each of them, feeling something stir inside her that she hadn't expected. It was strange, how quickly she had gone from being a solitary, cold figure to someone part of somethingβhowever odd that something was.
Tsunami grinned, her sharp teeth gleaming in the firelight. "Alright then," she said, slapping her tail on the ground. "We've got a destination. And if anyone can survive a trek through the Sea Kingdom, it's us."
Frost stared into the fire, its warmth seeping into her chilled bones, and for the first time in a long while, she allowed herself to hope that maybe, just maybe, the journey ahead wouldn't be so bad. After all, there were worse things than following a group of dragonets on a wild adventure, right?
And with that, the group settled in for the night, the fire flickering brightly against the darkened sky, and the scent of salt and sea winds carried on the breeze. The road ahead was uncertain, but for once, Frost felt like she was no longer flying solo.
