CHAPTER NINETEEN:
SCOTT KISSED LYDIA

AFTER ELAINE GOT HOME FROM the night of the school incident, she had found the things her real mother had left behind for her. It was a leather book, containing all sorts of symbols inside along with what Elaine assumed was spells. The female had read the Latin phrases with ease, though she found herself unsure of how exactly she was supposed to process the fact that her birth mother claimed to be a witch. But, Elaine also realized that the dark haired woman had seemed to be holding something back. Something that she was afraid to let Elaine know.

Now, a few days later, Elaine sat on her bed, the leather book opened in her hands as she read over the phrases. She had even attempted the witch craft that came along with it, deciding it was best to take it one step at a time and start with reading the entire book first. Melissa had yelled at both Scott and Elaine when they made it home, and had been extremely weary of everywhere they went after the school incident.

Elaine hadn't talked with Scott or Stiles since the incident. She wasn't full on ignoring them, however, she wasn't really happy with the fact that they had thrown Derek to the wolves. Of course, when she had made this joke in her head, she had laughed at herself. She new that she was overreacting just a tad bit, but if there was one thing Elaine hated other than dark rooms, and water, it would be liars. She just didn't realize that lying was soon to become a big part of her life.

The sun was peaking through the blinds, her alarm clock just now going off. She had woken up at three in the morning with nightmares of the creature that had chased them, and hadn't been able to go back to sleep. So, she had been up reading the leather book her birth mother had given her, although not getting very far seeing as she would get distracted every few minutes. She had listened as her mother went in to wake up Scott, hearing something along the lines of Scott not caring about his mother's break up's.

When a knock came on her door, Elaine was quick to tie the leather book closed, stuffing it under her pillow and offering her mother a small smile as she entered the room. She walked in, taking a seat on the edge of Elaine's bed and looking at her for a moment.

"You okay to go to school today?" Melissa gently asked her.

"I'm perfectly fine, mom." Elaine assured her. "I found out that Deaton's giving me a raise, so I'm the happiest girl alive." Melissa smiled at her daughter's optimism. But she knew that Elaine wasn't one that enjoyed showing her moments of weakness. Her moments of fear. She liked to tell everyone that she was okay, and would make it through the day with a façade constantly covering her face. Elaine removed the covers from her body before getting up and giving her mother a kiss on the cheek. "Don't worry about us today, alright? Go to your already stressful work place, with a little less stress hovering above your shoulders when it comes to Scott and I."

Melissa stood up and giving her child another smile before giving her a kiss on the head. "Call me if you need me whatsoever, alright."

"I won't need you." Elaine assured. "But I promise to call if I do." Melissa nodded her head before turning on her heel and walking out of the room, leaving Elaine alone to get ready for the day ahead of her.

"It's just weird. Everybody's talking about what happened the other night, and nobody knows it was us." Allison spoke as she, Lydia, and Elaine all exited the classroom with one another.

"Thank you for the Protection of Minors." Lydia sarcastically smiled.

"Lydia, El, do you think I made the wrong decision?" Allison asked, talking about the break up she and Scott had had the night of the incident. Well, Elaine wasn't exactly sure if they were really broken up or if it was more so just a break.

"About that jacket with that dress? Absolutely." Lydia nodded her head, making Elaine roll her eyes, though a small quirk of amusement appeared on her lips.

"You know what I mean." Allison said with the roll of her eyes, though a smile covered her face.

"Hello? Scott locked us in a classroom and left us for dead. He's lucky we're not pressing charges, or making him pay our therapy bills." Lydia scoffed.

"Hey, that's my brother you're talking about." Elaine said, lightly slapping her friend. "He did what he thought was right in order to keep us safe."

"Aren't you mad at him too?" Lydia cocked an eyebrow. Elaine opened her mouth before huffing, making the girl smile in success. It was later when Allison and Elaine had went to Mr. Harris' room in order to take their test that they had that day. Elaine watched as her brother entered, walking up to Allison and trying to talk to her only for Mr. Harris to interrupt, and tell him to find his seat which was beside of Elaine, Stiles sitting behind Scott.

"You have forty-five minutes to complete the test. Twenty-five percent of your grade can be earned right now simply by writing your name on the cover of the blue book. However, as happens every year, one of you will inexplicably fail to put your name on the cover, and I'll be left yet again questioning my decision to ever become a teacher. So, let's get the disappointment over with. Begin!" Mr. Harris instructed them.

Elaine sat there, quickly answering the questions with confidence. In between the trauma, she had managed to squeeze in a little studying time with Allison in order to pass the test. However, it seemed that that was about to be wasted upon watching her brother get up and run out. Elaine frowned, watching as Stiles quickly went after him. Elaine, deciding that Stiles would handle this a lot better than she probably would, forced herself to stay placed in her seat in order to finish her test, worry replacing the knowledge she had crammed in. Allison glanced back towards the girl who simply shrugged her shoulders in response before they both reluctantly went back to their tests.

Elaine stood there with Lydia, glancing down the hall where she saw Scott and Stiles talking with one another. Apparently, Scott had been having a panic attack when he left the test earlier, but Stiles had been sure to assure Elaine that he was alright. Lydia looked at her friend before frowning slightly.

"El, are you alright?"

Elaine softly sighed. "Yeah, I just feel like I've been the worst sister recently. And I just wish I knew how to be better at being his sibling."

"You're saying that like he doesn't see you as his sister at all."

"Well, I'm angry at him for practically no reason. We've been fighting a lot recently. And the whole me being adopted thing is making me think thatβ€•οΈŽ"

"Don't think it. Whatever it is, don't." Lydia cut her friend off. "I'm not the one for giving you sibling advice, because quite frankly, I don't really care. However, you and Scott are the closest pair of siblings I've ever met. I don't know why you can't seem to get it through your head that he doesn't care about whether or not you're adopted."

Elaine offered her friend the smallest of smiles. "Thanks, Lyds."

"Oh look, that's him now." Lydia spoke, making Elaine turn her head just as Scott walked up to them.

"Hey, El." He simply said before turning to Lydia. "Hey Lydia, can we talk for a second?"

Lydia glanced towards Elaine before turning back towards Scott. "Of course." That's when the two walked off, leaving Elaine to stand there with a small frown. She turned and started walking down the hall, stopping in front of Stiles.

"What is Scott wanting to talk with Lydia about?" Elaine curiously asked.

"Well, apparently he can smell emotions." He told the girl, making her raise an eyebrow. "So, I wanted to see if Lydia felt anything towards me."

"Like what?" Elaine asked, feeling a pit form in her stomach. She didn't know why. She should've expected this from the boy, seeing as he had liked Lydia since the third grade. Was she feeling Jealous? Was she actually feeling jealous over Lydia? She couldn't be, right? It's not like Lydia would ever reciprocate those feelings, right? She swallowed before holding up a hand. "You know what, I don't even wanna know. However, I do want to know if you and Scott are upset with me being upset with you."

"Why would you think that?" Stiles frowned. She shrugged her shoulders.

"A feeling, I guess."

"A very wrong feeling." Stiles told her. "We could never be mad at you, Laney. Never."

"Really?" She questioned.

"Really." He assured her. He then smiled. "You won't believe it, but I got put on to play first line."

"Oh my god! Stiles, that's amazing!" Elaine smiled widely, laughing in excitement for him.

"I know!" He smiled. "And Scott and Jackson are now co-captains."

"Oh my god, congratulations to you both!" Elaine cheered. The girl would be lying if she said she wasn't truly happy for both of them. They both deserved it. As Elaine continue to claim her excitement for them, Stiles watched her. And he found himself watching her wide smile, and the happy glow that danced within her eyes at the news. What he also found himself doing, was smiling widely in response at her happiness. And he found butterflies begin to form in his stomach. However, Elaine was quick to snap him from his trance. "Hey, practice is about to start, you better get going."

"Uh, yeah." He nodded. "Are youβ€•οΈŽare you coming?"

"Did you want me to?" Elaine cocked an eyebrow, though a smile was on her face as she watched the boy open and close his mouth before she chuckled light heartedly. "Of course I'm coming, I wouldn't miss it for the world." Stiles smiled at this and quickly wrapped an arm around her shoulders before they made their way onto the lacrosse field.

Elaine sat there beside Lydia on the bleachers, the two females watching the lacrosse practice that took place. She watched as it was her brother's turn, watching Stiles say a few words to him before the boy ran forward only to be knocked down by two others. Scott stood up, and just as Stiles was about to go, Scott took his lacrosse stick to Stiles' chest in order to stop him from going further before turning around taking his turn again. Elaine frowned slightly at this but simply brushed it off.

Elaine watched Coach blow the whistle before Scott started forward, knocking the two defenders down before running up to the goal and hitting Danny with his lacrosse stick before scoring the ball. Elaine quickly jumped down from the bleachers and ran over towards the group that was now crouched down beside Danny. Elaine quickly kneeled down on the other side of the boy, her volunteering as a nurse seeming to kick in.

"Danny, look at me." Elaine spoke, noticing the blood that was falling from Danny's nose. The paramedic came over, making the boy look into a flash light. She glanced over towards Stiles who was talking with Scott before glancing back down at the boy.

"Is he okay?" Lydia questioned.

"He's fine." Elaine assured the group, taking a cloth from the paramedic in order to wipe the blood away from the boy's face, holding it to his nose.

"It looks like he just has a bloody nose." Jackson trailed off as he looked at Lydia, who furrowed her eyebrows.

"What?"

"Your lipstick." He simply stated.

Lydia pulled out a mirror before opening it and scoffing. "Oh! I wonder how that happened?"

"Yeah, I wonder." Jackson muttered. Elaine nodded towards Danny, offering him a small smile before standing up and making her way over towards Stiles who was looking at Scott with narrowed eyes.

"Stiles? What is it?" Elaine frowned.

"I think Scott kissed Lydia." Stiles answered and Elaine's breath hitched in her throat.
